The spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chain is a paradigmatic quantum integrable model. Although it can be solved exactly via Bethe ansatz techniques, there are still open issues regarding the spectrum at root of unity values of the anisotropy. We construct Baxter's Q operator at arbitrary anisotropy from a two-parameter transfer matrix associated to a complex-spin auxiliary space. A decomposition of this transfer matrix provides a simple proof of the transfer matrix fusion and Wronskian relations. At root of unity a truncation allows us to construct the Q operator explicitly in terms of finite-dimensional matrices. From its decomposition we derive truncated fusion and Wronskian relations as well as an interpolation-type formula that has been conjectured previously. We elucidate the Fabricius-McCoy (FM) strings and exponential degeneracies in the spectrum of the six-vertex transfer matrix at root of unity. Using a semicyclic auxiliary representation we give a conjecture for creation and annihilation operators of FM strings for all roots of unity. We connect our findings with the 'string-charge duality' in the thermodynamic limit, leading to a conjecture for the imaginary part of the FM string centres with potential applications to out-of-equilibrium physics.
We construct the fusion operators in the generalized $τ^{(2)}$-model using the fused $L$-operators, and verify the fusion relations with the truncation identity. The algebraic Bethe ansatz discussion is conducted on two special classes of $τ^{(2)}$ which include the superintegrable chiral Potts model. We then perform the parallel discussion on the XXZ spin chain at roots of unity, and demonstrate that the $sl_2$-loop-algebra symmetry exists for the root-of-unity XXZ spin chain with a higher spin, where the evaluation parameters for the symmetry algebra are identified by the explicit Fabricius-…
We demonstrate that the transfer matrix of the inhomogeneous $N$-state chiral Potts model with two vertical superintegrable rapidities serves as the $Q$-operator of XXZ chain model for a cyclic representation of $U_{\sf q}(sl_2)$ with $N$th root-of-unity ${\sf q}$ and representation-parameter for odd $N$. The symmetry problem of XXZ chain with a general cyclic $U_{\sf q}(sl_2)$-representation is mapped onto the problem of studying $Q$-operator of some special one-parameter family of generalized $τ^{(2)}$-models. In particular, the spin-$\frac{N-1}{2}$ XXZ chain model with ${\sf q}^N=1$ and the…
The generalized open XXZ model at $q$ root of unity is considered. We review how associated models, such as the $q$ harmonic oscillator, and the lattice sine-Gordon and Liouville models are obtained. Explicit expressions of the local Hamiltonian of the spin ${1 \over 2}$ XXZ spin chain coupled to dynamical degrees of freedom at the one end of the chain are provided. Furthermore, the boundary non-local charges are given for the lattice sine Gordon model and the $q$ harmonic oscillator with open boundaries. We then identify the spectrum and the corresponding Bethe states, of the XXZ and the q ha…
We provide two methods of producing the $Q$-operator of XXZ spin chain of higher spin, one for $N$th root-of-unity $q$ with odd $N$ and another for a general $q$, as the generalization of those known in the six-vertex model. In the root-of-unity case, we discuss the functional relations involving the constructed $Q$-operator for the symmetry study of the theory. The $Q$-operator of XXZ chain of higher spin for a generic $q$ is constructed by extending Baxter's argument in spin-1/2 case for the six-vertex $Q$-operator.
We demonstrate for the six vertex and XXZ model parameterized by $Δ=-(q+q^{-1})/2\neq \pm 1$ that when q^{2N}=1 for integer $N\geq 2$ the Bethe's ansatz equations determine only the eigenvectors which are the highest weights of the infinite dimensional sl_2 loop algebra symmetry group of the model. Therefore in this case the Bethe's ansatz equations are incomplete and further conditions need to be imposed in order to completely specify the wave function. We discuss how the evaluation parameters of the finite dimensional representations of the sl_2 loop algebra can be used to complete this spec…
For generic values of q, all the eigenvectors of the transfer matrix of the U_q sl(2)-invariant open spin-1/2 XXZ chain with finite length N can be constructed using the algebraic Bethe ansatz (ABA) formalism of Sklyanin. However, when q is a root of unity (q=exp(i pi/p) with integer p>1), the Bethe equations acquire continuous solutions, and the transfer matrix develops Jordan cells. Hence, there appear eigenvectors of two new types: eigenvectors corresponding to continuous solutions (exact complete p-strings), and generalized eigenvectors. We propose general ABA constructions for these two n…
The symmetries of the twisted XXZ spin-chain (alias the twisted six-vertex model) at roots of unity are investigated. It is shown that when the twist parameter is chosen to depend on the total spin an infinite-dimensional non-abelian symmetry algebra can be explicitly constructed for all spin sectors. This symmetry algebra is identified to be the upper or lower Borel subalgebra of the sl_2 loop algebra. The proof uses only the intertwining property of the six-vertex monodromy matrix and the familiar relations of the six-vertex Yang-Baxter algebra.
We consider the sl(2)_q-invariant open spin-1/2 XXZ quantum spin chain of finite length N. For the case that q is a root of unity, we propose a formula for the number of admissible solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations in terms of dimensions of irreducible representations of the Temperley-Lieb algebra; and a formula for the degeneracies of the transfer matrix eigenvalues in terms of dimensions of tilting sl(2)_q-modules. These formulas include corrections that appear if two or more tilting modules are spectrum-degenerate. For the XX case (q=exp(i pi/2)), we give explicit formulas for the num…
Finding out root patterns of quantum integrable models is an important step to study their physical properties in the thermodynamic limit. Especially for models without $U(1)$ symmetry, their spectra are usually given by inhomogeneous $T-Q$ relations and the Bethe root patterns are still unclear. In this paper with the antiperiodic $XXZ$ spin chain as an example, an analytic method to derive both the Bethe root patterns and the transfer-matrix root patterns in the thermodynamic limit is proposed. Based on them the ground state energy and elementary excitations in the gapped regime are derived.…
A number of conjectures have been given recently concerning the connection between the antiferromagnetic XXZ spin chain at $Δ= - \frac12$ and various symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices. Here we use the integrability of the XXZ chain to gain further insight into these developments. In doing so we obtain a number of new results using Baxter's $Q$ function for the XXZ chain for periodic, twisted and open boundary conditions. These include expressions for the elementary symmetric functions evaluated at the groundstate solution of the Bethe roots. In this approach Schur functions play a …
We prove some part of the conjecture that regular Bethe ansatz eigenvectors of the XXZ spin chain at roots of unity are highest weight vectors of the $sl_2$ loop algebra. Here $q$ is related to the XXZ anisotropic coupling $Δ$ by $Δ=(q+q^{-1})/2$, and it is given by a root of unity, $q^{2N}=1$, for a positive integer $N$. We show that regular XXZ Bethe states are annihilated by the generators ${\bar x}_k^{+}$'s, for any $N$. We discuss, for some particular cases of N=2, that regular XXZ Bethe states are eigenvectors of the generators of the Cartan subalgebra, ${\bar h}_k$'s. Here the loop alge…
In a recent paper (cond-mat/0009279), Fabricius and McCoy studied the spectrum of the spin 1/2 XXZ-model at Delta = (q+q^{-1})/2 and q^{2N}=1 for integer N >1. They found a certain pattern of degeneracies and linked it to the sl(2)-loop symmetry present in the commensurable spin sector (N divides S^z). We show that the degeneracies are due to zero-energy, transparent excitations, the cyclic bound states. These exist both in commensurable and incommensurable sectors, indicating a symmetry, of which sl(2)-loop is a partial manifestation. Our approach treats both sectors on even footing and yield…
We show that every regular Bethe ansatz eigenvector of the XXZ spin chain at roots of unity is a highest weight vector of the $sl_2$ loop algebra, for some restricted sectors with respect to eigenvalues of the total spin operator $S^Z$, and evaluate explicitly the highest weight in terms of the Bethe roots. We also discuss whether a given regular Bethe state in the sectors generates an irreducible representation or not. In fact, we present such a regular Bethe state in the inhomogeneous case that generates a reducible Weyl module. Here, we call a solution of the Bethe ansatz equations which is…
Thermodynamics of the spin 1/2 XXZ model is studied in the critical regime using the quantum transfer matrix (QTM) approach. We find functional relations indexed by the Takahashi-Suzuki numbers among the fusion hierarchy of the QTM's (T-system) and their certain combinations (Y-system). By investigating analyticity of the latter, we derive a closed set of non-linear integral equations which characterize the free energy and the correlation lengths for both <sigma_j^{+} sigma_i^{-}> and <sigma_j^{z} sigma_i^{z}> at any finite temperatures. Concerning the free energy, they exactly coincide with T…
An explicit construction for Q-operators of the finite XXZ spin-chain with twisted boundary conditions is presented. The massless and the massive regime is considered as well as the root of unity case. It is explained how these results yield an alternative expression for the trace function employed in the description of the correlation functions of the inhomogeneous XXZ model on the infinite lattice by Boos, Jimbo, Miwa, Smirnov and Takeyama(hep-th/0412191).
We discuss a conjecture that the twisted transfer matrix of the six-vertex model at roots of unity with some discrete twist angles should have the sl(2) loop algebra symmetry. As an evidence of this conjecture, we show the following mathematical result on a subalgebra of the sl(2) loop algebra, which we call a Borel subalgebra: any given finite-dimensional highest weight representation of the Borel subalgebra is extended into that of the sl(2) loop algebra, if the parameters associated with it are nonzero. Thus, if operators commuting or anti-commuting with the twisted transfer matrix of the s…
We investigate special solutions to the Bethe Ansatz equations (BAE) for open integrable $XXZ$ Heisenberg spin chains containing phantom (infinite) Bethe roots. The phantom Bethe roots do not contribute to the energy of the Bethe state, so the energy is determined exclusively by the remaining regular excitations. We rederive the phantom Bethe roots criterion and focus on BAE solutions for mixtures of phantom roots and regular (finite) Bethe roots. We prove that in the presence of phantom Bethe roots, all eigenstates are split between two invariant subspaces, spanned by chiral shock states. Bet…
The spectral problem of the Heisenberg XXZ spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chain on the segment is investigated within a modified algebraic Bethe ansatz framework. We consider in this work the most general boundaries allowed by integrability. The eigenvalues and the eigenvectors are obtained. They are characterised by a set of Bethe roots with cardinality equal to $N$, the length of the chain, and which satisfies a set of Bethe equations with an additional term.

Following Baxter's method of producing Q_{72}-operator, we construct the Q-operator of the root-of-unity eight-vertex model for the crossing parameter $η= \frac{2m K}{N}$ with odd $N$ where Q_{72} does not exist. We use this new Q-operator to study the functional relations in the Fabricius-McCoy comparison between the root-of-unity eight-vertex model and the superintegrable N-state chiral Potts model. By the compatibility of the constructed Q-operator with the structure of Baxter's eight-vertex (solid-on-solid) SOS model, we verify the set of functional relations of the root-of-unity eight-ver…
The Q matrix invented by Baxter in 1972 to solve the eight vertex model at roots of unity exists for all values of N, the number of sites in the chain, but only for a subset of roots of unity. We show in this paper that a new Q matrix, which has recently been introduced and is non zero only for N even, exists for all roots of unity. In addition we consider the relations between all of the known Q matrices of the eight vertex model and conjecture functional equations for them.
We discuss a family of operators which commute or anti-commute with the twisted transfer matrix of the six-vertex model at $q$ being roots of unity: $q^{2N}=1$. The operators commute with the Hamiltonian of the XXZ spin chain under the twisted boundary conditions, and they are valid also for the inhomogeneous case. For the case of the anti-periodic boundary conditions, we show explicitly that the operators generate the $sl_2$ loop algebra in the sector of the total spin operator $S^Z \equiv N/2 ({\rm mod} N)$. The infinite-dimensional symmetry leads to exponentially-large spectral degeneracies…
We propose an expression for the current form of the lowering operator of the $ {sl}_2$ loop algebra symmetry of the six vertex model (XXZ spin chain) at roots of unity. This operator has poles which correspond to the evaluation parameters of representation theory which are given as the roots of the Drinfeld polynomial. We explicitly compute these polynomials in terms of the Bethe roots which characterize the highest weight states for all values of $S^z$. From these polynomials we find that the Bethe roots satisfy sum rules for each value of S^z.
We review the recently discovered symmetries of the 8 and 6 vertex models which exist at roots of unity and present their relation with representation theory of affine Lie algebras, Drinfeld polynomials and Bethe vectors.
We demonstrate that the six vertex model (XXZ spin chain) with $Δ=(q+q^{-1})/2$ and $q^{2N}=1$ has an invariance under the loop algebra of $sl_2$ which produces a special set of degenerate eigenvalues. For $Δ=0$ we compute the multiplicity of the degeneracies using Jordan Wigner techniques
