Spin wave, the collective excitation of magnetic order, is one of the fundamental angular momentum carriers in magnetic systems. Understanding the spin wave propagation in magnetic textures lies in the heart of developing pure magnetic information processing schemes. Here we show that the spin wave propagation across a chiral domain wall follows simple geometric trajectories, similar to the geometric optics. And the geometric behaviors are qualitatively different in normally magnetized film and tangentially magnetized film. We identify the lateral shift, refraction, and total reflection of spin wave across a ferromagnetic domain wall. Moreover, these geometric scattering phenomena become polarization-dependent in antiferromagnets, indicating the emergence of spin wave birefringence inside antiferromagnetic domain wall.
The spin wave transportation through a transverse magnetic domain wall (DW) in a magnetic nanowire is studied. It is found that spin wave passes through a DW without reflection. A magnon, the quantum of the spin wave, carries opposite spins on the two sides of the DW. As a result, there is a spin angular momentum transfer from the propagating magnons to the DW. This magnonic spin-transfer torque can efficiently drive a DW to propagate in the opposite direction to that of the spin wave.
The outlook for producing useful practical devices within the paradigm of magnonics rests on our ability to emit, control and detect coherent exchange spin waves on the nanoscale. Here, we argue that all these key functionalities can be delivered by chiral magnonic resonators - soft magnetic elements chirally coupled, via magneto-dipole interaction, to magnonic media nearby. Starting from the basic principles of chiral coupling, we outline how they could be used to construct devices and explore underpinning physics, ranging from basic logic gates to field programmable gate arrays, in-memory co…
Recent studies have revealed that domain walls in magnetic nanostructures can serve as compact, energy-efficient spin-wave waveguides for building magnonic devices that are considered promising candidates for overcoming the challenges and bottlenecks of today's CMOS technologies. However, imprinting long strip-domain walls into magnetic nanowires remains a challenge, especially in curved geometries. Here, through micromagnetic simulations, we present a method for writing strip-domain walls into curved magnetic nanowires using spin-orbit torque. We employ Y-shaped magnetic nanostructures as wel…
In antiferromagnets, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction lifts the degeneracy of left- and right-circularly polarized spin waves. This relativistic coupling increases the efficiency of spin-wave-induced domain wall motion and leads to higher drift velocities. We show that in biaxial antiferromagnets, the spin-wave helicity controls both the direction and magnitude of the magnonic force on chiral domain walls. By contrast, in uniaxial antiferromagnets, the magnonic force is propulsive with a helicity dependent strength.
The channeling of spin waves with domain walls in ultrathin ferromagnetic films is demonstrated theoretically and through micromagnetics simulations. It is shown that propagating excitations localized to the wall, which appear in the frequency gap of bulk spin wave modes, can be guided effectively in curved geometries and can propagate in close proximity to other channels with no perceptible scattering or loss in coherence. For Néel-type walls arising from an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, the channeling is strongly nonreciprocal and group velocities can exceed 1 km/s in the lo…
We present a semiclassical formalism for antiferromagnetic (AFM) magnonics which promotes the central ingredient of spin wave chirality, encoded in a quantity called magnonic isospin, to a first-class citizen of the theory. We use this formalism to unify results of interest from the field under a single chirality-centric formulation. Our main result is that the isospin is governed by unitary time evolution, through a Hamiltonian projected down from the full spin wave dynamics. Because isospin is SU(2)-valued, its dynamics on the Bloch sphere are precisely rotations - which, in general, do not …
Traveling spin waves in magnonic waveguides undergo severe attenuation, which tends to result in a finite propagation length of spin waves, even in magnetic materials with the accessible lowest damping constant, heavily restricting the development of magnonic devices. Compared with the spin waves in traditional waveguides, propagating spin waves along strip domain wall are expected to exhibit enhanced transmission. Here, we demonstrate, theoretically and through micromagnetic simulations, that spin-orbit torque associated with a ferromagnet/heavy metal bilayer can efficiently control the atten…
A phenomenological equation called Landau-Lifshitz-Baryakhtar (LLBar) equation, which could be viewed as the combination of Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equation and an extra "exchange damping" term, was derived by Baryakhtar using Onsager's relations. We interpret the origin of this "exchange damping" as nonlocal damping by linking it to the spin current pumping. The LLBar equation is investigated numerically and analytically for the spin wave decay and domain wall motion. Our results show that the lifetime and propagation length of short-wavelength magnons in the presence of nonlocal damping could b…
Magnetic domain wall (DW) motion induced by a localized Gaussian temperature profile is studied in a Permalloy nanostrip within the framework of the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation. The different contributions to thermally induced DW motion, entropic torque and magnonic spin transfer torque, are isolated and compared. The analysis of magnonic spin transfer torque includes a description of thermally excited magnons in the sample. A third driving force due to a thermally induced dipolar field is found and described. Finally, thermally induced DW motion is studied under realistic condit…
We investigate ferrimagnetic domain wall dynamics induced by circularly polarized spin waves theoretically and numerically. We find that the direction of domain wall motion depends on both the circular polarization of spin waves and the sign of net spin density of ferrimagnet. Below the angular momentum compensation point, left- (right-) circularly polarized spin waves push a domain wall towards (away from) the spin-wave source. Above the angular momentum compensation point, on the other hand, the direction of domain wall motion is reversed. This bidirectional motion originates from the fact t…
The interplay between spin wave and magnetic texture represents the information exchange between the fast and slow dynamical parts of magnetic systems. Here we formulate a set of magnonic torques acting on background magnetic texture, by extracting time-invariant information from the fast precessing spin waves. Under the frame of magnonic torques, we use theoretical formulations and micromagnetic simulations to investigate the spin wave driven domain wall motion in two typical symmetry-breaking situations: the rotational symmetry broken by the Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction, and the translat…
Various latest experiments have proven the theoretical prediction that domain walls in planar magnetic structures can channel spin waves as outstanding magnonic waveguides, establishing a superb platform for building magnonic devices. Recently, three-dimensional nanomagnetism has been boosted up and become a significant branch of magnetism, because three-dimensional magnetic structures expose a lot of emerging physics hidden behind planar ones and will inevitably provide broader room for device engineering. Skyrmions and antiSkyrmions, as natural three-dimensional magnetic configurations, are …
Polarization, denoting the precession direction with respect to the background magnetization, is an intrinsic degree of freedom of spin wave. Using magnetic textures to control the spin wave polarization is fundamental and indispensable toward reprogrammable polarization-based magnonics. Here, we show that due to the intrinsic cubic anisotropy, a $90^\circ$ antiferromagnetic domain wall naturally acts as a spin wave retarder (wave-plate). Moreover, for a $90^\circ$ domain wall pair developed by introducing a second domain in a homogenous antiferromagnetic wire, the sign of retarding effect can…
The magnetization dynamics in nanostructures has been extensively studied in the last decades, and nanomagnetism has evolved significantly over that time, discovering new effects, developing numerous applications, and identifying promising new directions. This includes magnonics, an emerging research field oriented on the study of spin-wave dynamics and their applications. In this context, thin ferromagnetic films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) offer interesting opportunities to study spin waves, in particular, due to out-of-plane magnetization in remanence or at relatively weak …
Chiral domain walls of Neel type emerge in heterostructures that include heavy metal (HM) and ferromagnetic metal (FM) layers owing to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction at the HM/FM interface. In developing storage class memories based on the current induced motion of chiral domain walls, it remains to be seen how dense such domain walls can be packed together. Here we show that a universal short range repulsion that scales with the strength of the DM interaction exists among chiral domain walls. The distance between the two walls can be reduced with application of out of plane field,…
As a collective quasiparticle excitation of the magnetic order in magnetic materials, spin wave, or magnon when quantized, can propagate in both conducting and insulating materials. Like the manipulation of its optical counterpart, the ability to manipulate spin wave polarization is not only important but also fundamental for magnonics. With only one type of magnetic lattice, ferromagnets can only accommodate the right-handed circularly polarized spin wave modes, which leaves no freedom for polarization manipulation. In contrast, antiferromagnets, with two opposite magnetic sublattices, have b…
The domain structure in in-plane magnetized Fe/Ni/W(110) films is investigated using spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy. A novel transition of the domain wall shape from a zigzag-like pattern to straight is observed as a function of the film thickness, which is triggered by the transition of the domain wall type from out-of-plane chiral wall to in-plane Néel wall. The contribution of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction to the wall energy is proposed to explain the transition of the domain wall shape, which is supported by Monte-Carlo simulations.

The motion of magnetic domain walls in ultrathin magnetic heterostructures driven by current via the spin Hall torque is described. We show results from perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB|MgO heterostructures with various heavy metal underlayers. The domain wall moves along or against the current flow depending on the underlayer material. The direction to which the domain wall moves is associated with the chirality of the domain wall spiral formed in these heterostructures. The one-dimensional model is used to describe the experimental results and extract parameters such as the Dzyaloshinskii-Mo…
Magnetic domain-walls (DWs) with a preferred chirality exhibit very efficient current-driven motion. Since structural inversion asymmetry (SIA) is required for their stability, the observation of chiral domain walls in highly symmetric Pt/Co/Pt is intriguing. Here, we tune the layer asymmetry in this system and observe, by current-assisted DW depinning experiments, a small chiral field which sensitively changes. Moreover, we convincingly link the observed efficiency of DW motion to the DW texture, using DW resistance as a direct probe for the internal orientation of the DW under the influence …
Topological defects embedded in or combined with domain walls have been proposed in various systems, some of which are referred to as domain wall skyrmions or domain wall bimerons. However, the experimental observation of such topological defects remains an ongoing challenge. Here, using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, we report the experimental discovery of domain wall bimerons in chiral magnet Co-Zn-Mn(110) thin films. By applying a magnetic field, multidomain structures develop, and simultaneously, chained and isolated bimerons arise as the localized state between the domains with…
Memory and logic devices that encode information in magnetic domains rely on the controlled injection of domain walls to reach their full potential. In this work, we exploit the chiral coupling induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction between in-plane and out-of-plane magnetized regions of a Pt/Co/AlO\textsubscript{x} trilayer in combination with current-driven spin-orbit torques to control the injection of domain walls into magnetic conduits. We demonstrate that the current-induced domain nucleation is strongly inhibited for magnetic configurations stabilized by the chiral coupling an…
We report the interplay between two different topological phases in condensed matter physics, the magnetic chiral domain wall (DW), and the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect. We show that the chiral DW driven by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) can divide the uniform domain into several zones where the neighboring zone possesses opposite quantized Hall conductance. The separated domain with a chiral edge state (CES) can be continuously modified by external magnetic field-induced domain expansion and thermal fluctuation, which gives rise to the reconfigurable QAH effect. More interesti…
The Ajiki-Ando (A-A) splitting of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNT) originating from the Aharanov-Bohm effect was observed in chiral specific SWNTs by the magneto-absorption measurements conducted at magnetic fields of up to 78 T. The absorption spectra from each chirality showed clear A-A splitting of the $E_{11}$ optical excitonic transitions. The parameters of both the dark-bright exciton energy splitting and the rate of A-A splitting in a magnetic field were determined for the first time from the well-resolved absorption spectra.
We present a mechanism for deterministic control of the Bloch chirality in magnetic domain walls and skyrmions, originating from the interplay between an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii$-$Moriya interaction (DMI) and a perpendicular magnetic field. Although conventional interfacial DMI favors chiral Néel skyrmions, it does not break the energetic symmetry of the two Bloch chiralities in mixed Bloch$-$Néel skyrmions. However, the energy barrier to switching between Bloch chiralities does depend on the sense of rotation, which is dictated by the direction of the driving field. Our analytical and micr…
Valleytronics is a pioneering technological field relying on the valley degree of freedom to achieve novel electronic functionalities. Topological valley-polarized electrons confined to domain walls in bilayer graphene were extensively studied in view of their potentials in valleytronics. Here, we study the magnonic version of domain wall excitations in 2D honeycomb ferromagnetic bilayers (FBL) with collinear order. In particular, we explore the implications of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and electrostatic doping (ED) on the existence and characteristics of 1D magnons confined to l…
Using magnetic force microscopy and micromagnetic simulations, we studied the effect of Oersted magnetic fields on the chirality of transverse magnetic domain walls in Fe$_{20}$Ni$_{80}$/Ir bilayer nanostrips. Applying nanosecond current pulses with a current density of around $2\times10^{12}$ A/m$^2$, the chirality of a transverse domain wall could be switched reversibly and reproducibly. These current densities are similar to the ones used for current-induced domain wall motion, indicating that the Oersted field may stabilize the transverse wall chirality during current pulses and prevent do…

In this letter, an asymmetric spin wave scattering behaviors caused by vortex chirality are investigated in cross-shaped ferromagnetic system. In the system, four scattering behaviors are found, 1) asymmetric skew scattering, depending on the polarity of vortex core, 2) back scattering (reflection), depending on the vortex core stiffness, 3) side deflection scattering, depending on structural symmetry of the vortex circulation, and 4) geometrical scattering, depending on waveguide structure. The first and second scattering behaviors are attributed to nonlinear topological magnon spin Hall effe…
We investigate theoretically the motion of chiral Néel domain walls in perpendicularly magnetized systems driven by in-plane strain gradients. We show that such strain drives domain walls efficiently towards increasing tensile (compressive) strain for positive (negative) magnetostrictive materials. During their motion a local damping torque that opposes the precessional torque due to the strain gradient arises. This torque prevents the onset of turbulent dynamics, and steady domain wall motion with constant velocity is asymptotically reached for any arbitrary large strain gradient. Withal, vel…
