We calculate the gravitational wave background produced from density perturbations in an early matter domination era where primordial black holes form. The formation of black holes requires perturbations out of the linear regime. Space with such perturbations reach a maximum expansion before it collapses asymmetrically forming a Zel'dovich pancake which depending on the parameters can either lead to a black hole or a virialized halo. In both cases and due to the asymmetry of the collapsing matter, a quadrupole moment generates gravitational waves which leave an imprint in the form of a stochastic background that can be detectable by near future gravitational interferometers.
We present some cosmological models which unify the late and early-time acceleration eras with the radiation and the matter domination era, and we realize the cosmological models by using the theoretical framework of $F(R)$ gravity. Particularly, the first model unifies the late and early-time acceleration with the matter domination era, and the second model unifies all the evolution eras of our Universe. The two models are described in the same way at early and late times, and only the intermediate stages of the evolution have some differences. Each cosmological model contains two Type IV sin…
We provide further numerical evidence which shows that R^n models in f(R) metric gravity whether produces a late time acceleration in the Universe or a matter domination era (usually a transient one) but not both. Our results confirm the findings of Amendola et al. (2007), but using a different approach that avoids the mapping to scalar-tensor theories of gravity, and therefore, dispense us from any discussion or debate about frames (Einstein vs Jordan) which are endemic in this subject. This class of models has been used extensively in the literature as an alternative to the dark energy, but …
We investigate the gravitational wave background from a first order phase transition in a matter-dominated universe, and show that it has a unique feature from which important information about the properties of the phase transition and thermal history of the universe can be easily extracted. Also, we discuss the inverse problem of such a gravitational wave background in view of the degeneracy among macroscopic parameters governing the signal.
We investigate how the gravitational baryogenesis mechanism can potentially constrain the form of a Type IV singularity. Specifically, we study two different models with interesting phenomenology, that realize two distinct Type IV singularities, one occurring at the end of inflation and one during the radiation domination era or during the matter domination era. As we demonstrate, the Type IV singularities occurring at the matter domination era or during the radiation domination era, are constrained by the gravitational baryogenesis, in such a way so that these do not render the baryon to entr…
In order to describe inflation in general relativity, scalar fields must inevitably be used, with all the setbacks of that description. On the other hand, $f(R)$ gravity and other modified gravity theories seem to provide a unified description of early and late-time dynamics without resorting to scalar or phantom theories. The question is, can modified gravity affect directly the mysterious radiation domination era? Addressing this question is the focus in this work, and we shall consider the case for which in the early stages of the radiation domination era, namely during the reheating era, t…
In this work we show that modifying the thermal history of the Universe by including an early period of matter domination can lead to the formation of astronomical objects. However, the survival of these objects can only be possible if the dominating matter decays to a daughter particle which is not only almost degenerate with the parent particle but also has an open coannihilation channel. This requirement translates in an upper bound for the coupling of such a channel and makes the early structure formation viable.
We study the scalar induced tensor perturbations at second order during matter domination in seven different gauges. Considering the obtained solution from the Newtonian gauge, we use the gauge transformation law of the scalar induced tensor perturbation to derive the solution in six other gauges. After identifying and eliminating the residual gauge modes in the synchronous and comoving orthogonal gauges, we obtain the same analytical results of the kernel function $I_χ$ for these two gauges as those obtained from the gauge transformation. For the scalar induced gravitational waves oscillating…
We present a scenario that ameliorates the tuning problems present in models of primordial black hole dark matter from inflation. Our setup employs the advantages of gravitational collapse in a long epoch of early matter domination with reheating temperature $\lesssim 10^{6}~\text{GeV}$. Furthermore, we make use of a string-inspired class of models where the inflaton is identified with a non-compact axion field. In this framework, the presence of multiple local minima in the inflaton potential can be traced back to an approximate discrete shift symmetry. This scenario allows the formation of p…
We numerically determine the cosmological branch of the free function in a nonlocal metric-based modification of gravity which provides a relativistic generalization of Milgrom's Modified Newtonian Dynamics. We are able to reproduce the $Λ$CDM expansion history over virtually all of cosmic history, including the era of radiation domination during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, the era of matter domination during Recombination, and most of the era of vacuum energy domination. The very late period of $0 \leq z < 0.0880$, during which the model deviates from the $Λ$CDM expansion history, is interestin…
Thermal freeze-out or freeze-in during a period of early matter domination can give rise to the correct dark matter abundance for $\langle σ_{\rm ann} v \rangle_{\rm f} < 3 \times 10^{-26}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1}$. In the standard scenario, a single field that behaves like matter drives the early matter dominated era. However, in realistic models, this epoch may involve more than one field. In this paper, we study the effect of such a modification on the production of dark matter during early matter domination. We show that even a subdominant second field that decays much faster than the dominant one …
Freeze-out or freeze-in during a period of early matter domination can yield the correct dark matter abundance for small values of the velocity-averaged annihilation cross section, $\langle σ_{\rm ann} v \rangle_{\rm f} < 3 \times 10^{-26}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1}$. However, in a generic non-standard thermal history, such a period is typically preceded by other phases. Here, we study production of dark matter in a simple post-inflationary history where a radiation-dominated phase after reheating is followed by an epoch of early matter domination. Focusing on the freeze-in regime, we show that dark matt…
In cosmological scenarios with thermal inflation, extra eras of moduli matter domination, thermal inflation and flaton matter domination exist between primordial inflation and the radiation domination of Big Bang nucleosynthesis. During these eras, cosmological perturbations on small scales can enter and re-exit the horizon, modifying the power spectrum on those scales. The largest modified scale, $k_\mathrm{b}$, touches the horizon size when the expansion changes from deflation to inflation at the transition from moduli domination to thermal inflation. We analytically calculate the evolution …
We show that a nonstandard cosmological history with a period of early matter domination driven by a sub-TeV visible-sector particle can arise rather naturally. This scenario involves a long-lived standard model singlet that acquires a thermal abundance at high temperatures from decays and inverse decays of a parent particle with SM charge(s), and subsequently dominates the energy density of the Universe as a frozen species. Entropy generation at the end of early matter domination dilutes the abundance of dangerous relics (such as gravitinos) by a factor as large as $10^4$. The scenario can ac…
The default assumption of early universe cosmology is that the postinflationary universe was radiation dominated until it was about 47000 years old. Direct evidence for the radiation dominated epoch extends back until nucleosynthesis, which began during the first second. However there are theoretical reasons to prefer a period of earlier matter domination, prior to nucleosynthesis, e.g. due to late decaying massive particles needed to explain baryogenesis. Axion cosmology is quantitatively affected by an early period of matter domination, with a different axion mass range preferred and greater…
In this work we examine the effects of a pre-inflationary de Sitter bounce on the energy spectrum of the primordial gravitational waves. Specifically we assume that the Universe is described by several evolution patches, starting with a de Sitter pre-inflationary bounce which is followed by an quasi-de Sitter slow-roll inflationary era, followed by a constant equation of state parameter abnormal reheating era, which is followed by the radiation and matter domination eras and the late-time acceleration eras. The bounce and the inflationary era can be realized by vacuum $f(R)$ gravity and the ab…
In this work we investigate the effects of a geometrically generated early dark energy era on the energy spectrum of the primordial gravitational waves. The early dark energy era, which we choose it to have a constant equation of state parameter $w$, is synergistically generated by an appropriate $f(R)$ gravity in the presence of matter and radiation perfect fluids. As we demonstrate, the predicted signal for the energy spectrum of the $f(R)$ primordial gravitational waves is amplified and can be detectable, for various reheating temperatures, especially for large reheating temperatures. The s…
The Universe's early thermal history is poorly constrained, and it is possible that it underwent a period of early matter domination driven by a heavy particle or an oscillating scalar field that decayed into radiation before the onset of Big Bang nucleosynthesis. The entropy sourced by this particle's decay reduces the cross section required for thermal-relic dark matter to achieve the observed abundance. This degeneracy between dark matter properties and the thermal history vastly widens the field of viable dark matter candidates, undermining efforts to constrain dark matter's identity. Fort…
Decoupled hidden sectors can easily and generically result in a period of cannibal domination, during which the dominant component of the Universe has an equation of state intermediate between radiation and matter due to self-heating by number-changing interactions. We present for the first time the consequences of a cannibal-dominated era prior to big bang nucleosynthesis for structure formation on small scales. We find that an early cannibal-dominated era imprints a characteristic peak on the dark matter power spectrum, with scale and amplitude directly determined by the mass, lifetime, and …
In cosmologies with an early matter-dominated era (EMDE) prior to Big Bang nucleosynthesis, the boosted growth of small-scale matter perturbations during the EMDE leads to microhalo formation long before halos would otherwise begin to form. For a range of models, halos can even form during the EMDE itself. These halos would dissipate at the end of the EMDE, releasing their gravitationally heated dark matter and thereby imprinting a free-streaming cut-off on the matter power spectrum. We conduct the first cosmological $N$-body simulations of the formation and evaporation of halos during and aft…
The evolution of the universe prior to Big Bang Nucleosynthesis could have gone through a phase of early matter domination (EMD) which enhanced the growth of small-scale dark matter structure. If EMD was long enough, self-gravitating objects formed prior to reheating. We study the evolution of these dense early halos (EHs) through reheating. At the end of EMD, EHs undergo rapid expansion and eventually eject their matter. We find that this process washes out structure on scales much larger than naively expected from the size of the original halos. We compute the density profiles of the EH remn…
We revisit the effects of an early matter-dominated era on gravitational waves induced by scalar perturbations. We carefully take into account the evolution of the gravitational potential, the source of these induced gravitational waves, during a gradual transition from an early matter-dominated era to the radiation-dominated era, where the transition timescale is comparable to the Hubble time at that time. Realizations of such a gradual transition include the standard perturbative reheating with a constant decay rate. Contrary to previous works, we find that the presence of an early matter-do…
We study the energy distribution and equation of state of the universe between the end of inflation and the onset of radiation domination (RD), considering observationally consistent single-field inflationary scenarios, with a potential 'flattening' at large field values, and a monomial shape $V(ϕ) \propto |ϕ|^p$ around the origin. As a proxy for (p)reheating, we include a quadratic interaction $g^2ϕ^2X^2$ between the inflaton $ϕ$ and a light scalar 'daughter' field $X$, with $g^2>0$. We capture the non-perturbative and non-linear nature of the system dynamics with lattice simulations, obtaini…
If even a relatively small number of black holes were created in the early universe, they will constitute an increasingly large fraction of the total energy density as space expands. It is thus well-motivated to consider scenarios in which the early universe included an era in which primordial black holes dominated the total energy density. Within this context, we consider Hawking radiation as a mechanism to produce both dark radiation and dark matter. If the early universe included a black hole dominated era, we find that Hawking radiation will produce dark radiation at a level $ΔN_{\rm eff} …

Pulsar timing provides a sensitive probe of small-scale structure. Gravitational perturbations arising from an inhomogeneous environment could manifest as detectable perturbations in the pulsation phase. Consequently, pulsar timing arrays have been proposed as a probe of dark matter substructure on mass scales as small as $10^{-11} M_\odot$. Since the small-scale mass distribution is connected to early-Universe physics, pulsar timing can therefore constrain the thermal history prior to Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN), a period that remains largely unprobed. We explore here the prospects for pul…
In this work, we shall incorporate a stiff era in the Universe's evolution in the context of $F(R)$ gravity. After deriving the vacuum $F(R)$ gravity, which may realize a stiff evolution, we combine the stiff $F(R)$ gravity with an $R^2$ model, and we construct a qualitative model for the inflationary and stiff era, with the latter commencing after the end of the inflationary era. We assume that the baryogenesis occurs during the stiff era, and we calculate the baryon to entropy ratio, which effectively constraints the functional form of the stiff $F(R)$ gravity. Further constraints on the sti…
We investigate the production of neutralino dark matter in a cosmological scenario featuring an early matter dominated era ending at a relatively low reheating temperature. In such scenarios different production mechanisms of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), besides the well--studied thermal production, can be important. This opens up new regions of parameter space where the lightest neutralino, as the best--known supersymmetric (SUSY) WIMP, obtains the required relic abundance. Many of these new sets of parameters are also compatible with current limits from colliders as well as …
We consider the cosmological model which allows to describe on equal footing the evolution of matter in the universe on the time interval from the inflation till the domination of dark energy. The matter is considered as a two-component perfect fluid imitated by homogeneous scalar fields between which there is energy exchange. Dark energy is represented by the cosmological constant, which is supposed invariable during the whole evolution of the universe. The matter changes its equation of state with time, so that the era of radiation domination in the early universe smoothly passes into the er…
In this work we shall consider the effects of a geometrically generated post-inflationary era on the energy spectrum of the primordial gravitational waves. Specifically, we shall consider a post-inflationary constant equation of state era, generated by the synergistic effect of $f(R)$ gravity and of radiation and matter perfect fluids. Two cases of interest shall be studied, one with equation of state parameter $w=-1/3$, in which case the Universe neither accelerates nor decelerates, and one with $w=0$ so an early matter domination era. For the evaluation of the inflationary observational indi…
We investigate dynamics of a flat FRW cosmological model with a barotropic matter and a non-minimally coupled scalar field (both canonical and phantom). In our approach we do not assume any specific form of a potential function for the scalar field and we are looking for generic scenarios of evolution. We show that dynamics of universe can be reduced to a 3-dimensional dynamical system. We have found the set of fixed points and established their character. These critical points represent all important epochs in evolution of the universe : (a) a finite scale factor singularity, (b) an inflation…
In this work we shall present models of $F(R)$ gravity which realize in a unified way the inflationary era along with a post-inflationary early dark energy era, with the late-time dark energy era. We shall use two approach methods in order to realize the unified cosmological eras, firstly we specify a Hubble rate which may describe the three distinct acceleration eras, and then by using well known $F(R)$ gravity reconstruction techniques, we shall find the differential equation which may yield the $F(R)$ gravity that realizes the cosmologies. In our second approach, we shall present in a quali…
It is commonly assumed that the energy density of the Universe was dominated by radiation between reheating after inflation and the onset of matter domination 54,000 years later. While the abundance of light elements indicates that the Universe was radiation dominated during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), there is scant evidence that the Universe was radiation dominated prior to BBN. It is therefore possible that the cosmological history was more complicated, with deviations from the standard radiation domination during the earliest epochs. Indeed, several interesting proposals regarding vari…
We discuss the creation of massless particles in a Universe, which transits from a radiation-dominated era to any other expansion law. We calculate in detail the generation of gravitons during the transition to a matter dominated era. We show that the resulting gravitons generated in the standard radiation/matter transition are negligible. We use our result to constrain one or more previous matter dominated era, or any other expansion law, which may have taken place in the early Universe. We also derive a general formula for the modification of a generic initial graviton spectrum by an early m…
In this work we shall develop a quantitative approach for extracting predictions on the primordial gravitational waves energy spectrum for $f(R)$ gravity. We shall consider two distinct models which yield different phenomenology, one pure $f(R)$ gravity model and one Chern-Simons corrected potential-less $k$-essence $f(R)$ gravity model in the presence of radiation and non-relativistic perfect matter fluids. The two $f(R)$ gravity models were carefully chosen in order for them to describe in a unified way inflation and the dark energy era, in both cases viable and compatible with the latest Pl…
We investigate the generation of gravitational waves due to the gravitational instability of primordial density perturbations in an early matter-dominated era which could be detectable by experiments such as LIGO and LISA. We use relativistic perturbation theory to give analytic estimates of the tensor perturbations generated at second order by linear density perturbations. We find that large enhancement factors with respect to the naive second-order estimate are possible due to the growth of density perturbations on sub-Hubble scales. However very large enhancement factors coincide with a bre…
