First measurement of the cross section for top quark pair production with additional charm jets using dileptonic final states in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = $ 13 TeV
The first measurement of the inclusive cross section for top quark pairs ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$) produced in association with two additional charm jets is presented. The analysis uses the dileptonic final states of $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ events produced in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 41.5 fb$^{-1}$, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. A new charm jet identification algorithm provides input to a neural network that is trained to distinguish among $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ events with two additional charm ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}c\bar{c}}$), bottom ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}b\bar{b}}$), and light-flavour or gluon ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}LL}$) jets. By means of a template fitting procedure, the inclusive $\mathrm{t\bar{t}c\bar{c}}$, $\mathrm{t\bar{t}b\bar{b}}$, and $\mathrm{t\bar{t}LL}$ cross sections are simultaneously measured, together with their ratios to the inclusive $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ + two jets cross section. This provides measurements of the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}c\bar{c}}$ and $\mathrm{t\bar{t}b\bar{b}}$ cross sections of 10.1 $\pm$ 1.2 (stat) $\pm$ 1.4 (syst) pb and 4.54 $\pm$ 0.35 (stat) $\pm$ 0.56 (syst) pb, respectively, in the full phase space. The results are compared and found to be consistent with predictions from two different matrix element generators with next-to-leading order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics, interfaced with a parton shower simulation.
Measurements of $K_S^0$ and $Λ^0$ production in $t\bar{t}$ final states have been performed. They are based on a data sample with integrated luminosity of 4.6 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, collected in 2011 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Neutral strange particles are separated into three classes, depending on whether they are contained in a jet, with or without a $b$-tag, or not associated with a selected jet. The aim is to look for differences in their main kinematic distributions. A comparison of data with several…
Measurement of the $b$-jet identification efficiency in dileptonic $t\bar{t}$ events using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV collected with the ATLAS detector
EUROPEAN ORGANISATION FOR NUCLEAR RESEARCH (CERN)(欧洲核子研究中心)
Hadronic form factors for the rare weak transitions $Λ_{b}\rightarrowΛ^{(*)}$ are calculated using a nonrelativistic quark model. The form factors are extracted in two ways. An analytic extraction using single component wave functions (SCA) with the quark current being reduced to its nonrelativistic Pauli form is employed in the first method. In the second method, the form factors are extracted numerically using the full quark model wave function (MCN) with the full relativistic form of the quark current. Although there are differences between the two sets of form factors, both sets satisfy th…
A measurement of the top-antitop ($t\bar{t}$) charge asymmetry is presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb$^{-1}$ of LHC $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector. Events with two charged leptons, at least two jets and large missing transverse momentum are selected. Two observables are studied: $A^{\ell\ell}_{\textrm{C}}$ based on the identified charged leptons, and $A^{t\bar{t}}_{\textrm{C}}$, based on the reconstructed $t\bar{t}$ final state. The asymmetries are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} A^{\ell\ell}_{\textrm{C}…
In top squark (stop) searches with a compressed spectrum, it is very helpful to consider the stop production recoiling against a hard jet from the initial state radiation to obtain a significant amount of missing transverse energy. In particular, the kinematic variable $R_M$ which measures the ratio of the lightest neutralino mass and the stop mass proved to be crucial in separating the signals from the backgrounds in both the all-hadronic decay and the semileptonic decay of the stops. Here we generalize the search method to the dileptonic stop decays. In this case, due to the two missing neut…
A measurement of the top quark mass (M[t]) in the dileptonic t t-bar decay channel is performed using data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The data was recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 +/- 0.5 inverse femtobarns. Events are selected with two oppositely charged leptons (l = e, mu) and two jets identified as originating from b quarks. The analysis is based on three kinematic observables whose distributions are sensitive to the value of M[t]. An invariant mass observable, M[bl], and a `stransverse ma…
A search for bottom-type vector-like quark pair production in dileptonic and fully hadronic final states in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV
A selection of recent jet measurements are presented from the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, focusing on substructure results for inclusive and charmed jets. The groomed jet momentum fractions ($z_g$) of inclusive full jets are shown for various jet resolution parameters, and $z_g$, the groomed splitting radius ($θ_g$) as well as the number of soft drops ($n_{\rm SD}$) of inclusive and charmed charged-particle jets are compared. The first direct measurement of the dead cone in heavy-flavor jets is also presented. Furthermore, the parallel mom…
Measurements of cross sections for events with charm and beauty jets in deep inelastic scattering at HERA are presented. Events with jets of transverse energy E_T^jet > 6 GeV and pseudorapidity -1.0 < eta^jet < 1.5 in the laboratory frame are selected in the kinematic region of photon virtuality Q^2 > 6 GeV^2 and inelasticity variable 0.07 < y < 0.625. Measurements are also made requiring a jet in the Breit frame with E_T^*jet > 6 GeV. The data were collected with the H1 detector in the years 2006 and 2007 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 189 pb^-1. The numbers of charm and beauty …
We present a search for the pair production of scalar top quarks, $\tilde{t}$, using 995 pb$^{-1}$ of data collected in $p\bar{p}$ collisions with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV. Both scalar top quarks are assumed to decay into a charm quark and a neutralino ($\tildeχ^{0}_{1}$), where $\tildeχ^{0}_{1}$ is the lightest supersymmetric particle. This leads to a final state with two acoplanar charm jets and missing transverse energy. We find the yield of such events to be consistent with the standard model expectation, and exclude sets of $\tilde{t}$ and…
A search for supersymmetric partners of top quarks decaying as $\tilde{t}_1\to c\tildeχ^0_1$ and supersymmetric partners of charm quarks decaying as $\tilde{c}_1\to c\tildeχ^0_1$, where $\tildeχ^0_1$ is the lightest neutralino, is presented. The search uses 36.1 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ $pp$ collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider and is performed in final states with jets identified as containing charm hadrons. Assuming a 100% branching ratio to $c\tildeχ^0_1$, top and charm squarks with masses up to 850 GeV are excluded at 95%…
We present the first measurements of the ratios of cross sections, σ(ppbar -> Z+c jet)/σ(ppbar -> Z+jet) and σ(ppbar -> Z+c jet)/σ(ppbar -> Z+b jet) for the associated production of a Z boson with at least one charm or bottom quark jet. Jets have transverse momentum p_{T}>20 GeV and pseudorapidity |η|<2.5. These cross section ratios are measured differentially as a function of jet and $Z$ boson transverse momenta, based on 9.7 fb^{-1} of ppbar collisions collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The measurements show significant deviations from per…
Ratios of cross sections, $σ$(Z+c jets) / $σ$(Z+jets), $σ$(Z+b jets) / $σ$(Z+jets), and $σ$(Z+c jets) / $σ$(Z+b jets) in the associated production of a Z boson with at least one charm or bottom quark jet are measured in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV. The data sample, collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$, with a fiducial volume of $p_\mathrm{T}$ $>$ 30 GeV and $|η|$ $<$ 2.4 for the jets, where $p_\mathrm{T}$ and $η$ represent transverse momentum and pseudorapidity, respectively. The Z boson candidates come f…
We present predictions for the inclusive production of charm jets in proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV. Several CTEQ parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the CTEQ6.6M type are employed, where two of the CTEQ6.6 PDFs have intrinsic charm. At large enough jet transverse momentum and large jet rapidity, the intrinsic charm content can be tested.
A first measurement of the $\mathrm{b}$ quark fragmentation function at the LHC is presented. Charmed meson candidates produced via semi-leptonic $\mathrm{t\overline{t}}$ decays ($\mathrm{t} \to \mathrm{b}\mathrm{W} \to$ b-jet $\ell ν$) are used as a proxy for the parent $\mathrm{B}$ meson. Templates are generated at various values of the fragmentation shape parameter $r_{\mathrm{b}}$, and are fit to the data to measure the value of $r_{\mathrm{b}}$. The final fit result is $r_{\mathrm{b}}=0.855 \pm 0.037\;\mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.031\;\mathrm{(syst)}$. This is the first measurement of the $\math…
The latest results on charm-tagged jets and open-charm production obtained with \mbox{ALICE} at the LHC are presented. The baryon-to-meson ratios for $\mathrm{Λ^+_c}$, $\mathrm{Σ^{0,+,++}_c}$ and $\mathrm{Ξ^{0,+}_c}$ measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\ \mathrm{TeV}$ are discussed. The measurements of the jet-momentum fraction carried by the $\mathrm{D^0}$ meson and $\mathrm{Λ^+_c}$ baryon in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\ \mathrm{TeV}$ are reported, and the number of leading-parton splittings $n_{SD}$ for $\mathrm{D^0}$-tagged and inclusive jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\ \mathrm…
Many measurements at the LHC require efficient identification of heavy-flavour jets, i.e. jets originating from bottom (b) or charm (c) quarks. An overview of the algorithms used to identify c jets is described and a novel method to calibrate them is presented. This new method adjusts the entire distributions of the outputs obtained when the algorithms are applied to jets of different flavours. It is based on an iterative approach exploiting three distinct control regions that are enriched with either b jets, c jets, or light-flavour and gluon jets. Results are presented in the form of correct…
We present predictions for the inclusive production of charm jets in proton-proton collisions at 2.76 and 5.02 TeV. The charm-quark is considered massless. In this scheme we find that the ratio of the next-to-leading order to the leading order cross section (K factor) is almost equal to one depending essentially on the choice of the renormalization and factorization scale. Adding non-pertubative corrections obtained from Pythia Monte Carlo calculations lead to reasonable agreement with experimental c-jet cross sections obtained by the CMS collaboration.
We compute the charm dijet photoproduction cross section at next-to-leading order of QCD in the zero-mass variable flavour number scheme, i.e. with active charm quarks in the proton and photon. The results are compared to recent measurements from the ZEUS experiment at HERA. The predictions for various distributions agree well with the data, in particular for large momentum fractions of the the partons in the photon, where direct photon processes dominate. At low momentum fractions, the predictions are quite sensitive to the charm content in the photon. The experimental data are shown to favou…
New results on charm quark production at HERA in an increased phase space in deep-inelastic scattering and photoproduction are discussed. Single & double-differential cross section distributions are compared to next-to-leading order QCD calculations as well as to MC@NLO in the photoproduction regime. The charm contribution to the proton structure, F_2^cc(x,Q^2), is determined with different experimental techniques and finally combined.

The data recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The final states that contain a pair of electrons or muons that are the decay products of a Z boson, and a jet consistent with being initiated by a charm quark produced in the hard interaction. Search for supersymmetry in final states with missing transverse momentum and charm-tagged jets using 139 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
We present the first measurement of the production cross section of a W boson with a single charm quark (c) in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV, using soft muon tagging of c jets. In a data sample of ~1.8 fb-1, recorded with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, we select events with W+1 or 2 jets. We use the charge correlation between the W and the muon from the semileptonic decay of a charm hadron to extract the Wc signal. We measure sigma_{Wc}(p_{Tc}>20 GeV/c, |η_c|<1.5)\times BR(W->\ellν) = 9.8+/-3.2 pb, in agreement with theoretical expectations.
The efficiency to identify jets containing $b$-hadrons ($b$-jets) is measured using a high purity sample of dileptonic top quark-antiquark pairs ($t\bar{t}$) selected from the 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016 from proton-proton collisions produced by the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. Two methods are used to extract the efficiency from $t\bar{t}$ events, a combinatorial likelihood approach and a tag-and-probe method. A boosted decision tree, not using $b$-tagging information, is used to select events in which two $b$-j…
We calculate the decay rate of bottomonium to two-charm quark jets $Υ\to c \bar c$ at the tree level and one-loop level including color-singlet and color-octet $b \bar b$ annihilations. We find that the short distance coefficient of the color-octet piece is much larger than the color-singlet piece, and that the QCD correction will change the endpoint behavior of the charm quark jet. The color-singlet piece is strongly affected by the one-loop QCD correction. In contrast, the QCD correction to the color-octet piece is weak. Once the experiment can measure the branching ratio and energy distribu…
The results of a dedicated search for pair production of scalar partners of charm quarks are reported. The search is based on an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The search is performed using events with large missing transverse momentum and at least two jets, where the two leading jets are each tagged as originating from c-quarks. Events containing isolated electrons or muons are vetoed. In an R-parity-conserving minimal supersymmetric scenario in which a single scalar-charm state is kinematically accessi…
A measurement of charm and beauty dijet photoproduction cross sections at the ep collider HERA is presented. Events are selected with two or more jets of transverse momentum $p_t^{jet}_{1(2)}>11(8)$ GeV in the central range of pseudo-rapidity $-0.9<η^{jet}_{1(2)}<1.3$. The fractions of events containing charm and beauty quarks are determined using a method based on the impact parameter, in the transverse plane, of tracks to the primary vertex, as measured by the H1 central vertex detector. Differential dijet cross sections for charm and beauty, and their relative contributions to the flavour i…
The rate of secondary charm-quark-pair production has been measured in 4.4 million hadronic Z0 decays collected by OPAL. By selecting events with three jets and tagging charmed hadrons in the gluon jet candidate using leptons and charged D* mesons, the average number of secondary charm-quark pairs per hadronic event is found to be (3.20+-0.21+-0.38)x10-2.
Using an inclusive method, BR(b -> D\bar{D}X) has been measured in hadronic Z^0 decays with the OPAL detector at LEP. The impact parameter significance of tracks opposite tagged b-jets is used to differentiate b -> D\bar{D}X decays from other decays. Using this result, the average number of charm and anti-charm quarks produced per beauty quark decay, n_c, is determined.
The CMS Collaboration presents the first measurement of the differential cross section of jets from charm quarks produced in proton-lead (pPb) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s[NN]) = 5.02 TeV, as well as results from charm quark jets in proton-proton (pp) collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV. By comparing the yields of the pPb and pp collision systems at the same energy, a nuclear modification factor for charm jets from 55 to 400 GeV/c in pPb collisions at sqrt(s[NN]) = 5.02 TeV of R[pA] = 0.92 +/- 0.07 (stat) +/- 0.11 (syst) is obtained. This is consistent …
We explore the feasibility of the measurement of charm-jet cross sections in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering at the future Electron-Ion Collider. This channel provides clean sensitivity to the strangeness content of the nucleon in the high-$x$ region. We estimate charm-jet tagging performance with parametrized detector simulations. We show the expected sensitivity to various scenarios for strange parton distribution functions. We argue that this measurement will be key to future QCD global analyses, so it should inform EIC detector designs and luminosity requirements.
The production of charm jets in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV was measured with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is based on a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of $6.23$ ${\rm nb}^{-1}$, collected using a minimum-bias trigger. Charm jets are identified by the presence of a D$^0$ meson among their constituents. The D$^0$ mesons are reconstructed from their hadronic decay D$^0\rightarrow$K$^{-}π^{+}$. The D$^0$-meson tagged jets are reconstructed using tracks of charged particles (track-based…
Dijet angular distributions of photoproduction events in which a D*+/- meson is produced in association with one of two energetic jets have been measured using an integrated luminosity of 120 pb^1. The results are compared with predictions from leading-order parton-shower Monte Carlo models and with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations.
This contribution summarizes a selection of recent results from the ALICE experiment. We show the cross-section of beauty jets in pp collisions, as well as the charmed baryon-to-meson production ratios, down to unprecedentedly low momenta, at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ and 13 TeV collision energies. We present the nuclear modification of ${\rm D}^0$-jets and the $v_2$ of non-prompt ${\rm D}^0$ in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV. We also discuss the implications and constraints from comparing these data to some of the most recent theoretical models.
We present a first study of the single top quark W-associated production (tW) in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV, using data collected with the CMS experiment. The search is performed in the dileptonic final states ee/eμ/μμ with a selection based on kinematical properties and b-tagging information. The contribution of the Z+jets processes to the background is estimated from a sideband in data. Two ttbar dominated control regions are used to constrain the normalization of top quark pair production in the signal region. An excess of events over the expected…
Recent results on jet cross sections and heavy-flavor production in photoproduction and neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations are presented. The jet measurements are used to perform stringent tests of perturbative QCD, to extract precise values of the strong coupling and to constrain further the proton and photon parton distribution functions. The measurement of beauty and charm production at HERA is an important testing ground for perturbative QCD and can provide information on the structure of the proton.
The first study of charm quark diffusion with respect to the jet axis in heavy ion collisions is presented. The measurement is performed using jets with $p_\mathrm{T}^\mathrm{jet}$ $>$ 60 GeV and D$^0$ mesons with $p_\mathrm{T}^\mathrm{D}$ $>$ 4 GeV in lead-lead (PbPb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} =$ 5.02 TeV, recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The radial distribution of D$^0$ mesons with respect to the jet axis is sensitive to the production mechanisms of the meson, as well as to the energy loss and diffusion proce…
We report the measurement of charged $D^*$ mesons in inclusive jets produced in proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV with the STAR experiment at RHIC. For $D^{*}$ mesons with fractional momenta $0.2 < z < 0.5$ in inclusive jets with 11.5 GeV mean transverse energy, the production rate is found to be $N(D^{*+}+D^{*-})/N(\mathrm{jet}) = 0.015 \pm 0.008 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.007 (\mathrm{sys})$. This rate is consistent with perturbative QCD evaluation of gluon splitting into a pair of charm quarks and subsequent hadronization.
A direct search for the standard model Higgs boson, H, produced in association with a vector boson, V (W or Z), and decaying to a charm quark pair is presented. The search uses a data set of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016, at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The search is carried out in mutually exclusive channels targeting specific decays of the vector bosons: W $\to$ $\ell ν$, Z $\to$ $\ell\ell$, and Z $\to$ $νν$, where $\ell$ is an electron or a muon. To fully exploit the topology of …
Using D$^{*+}$ mesons exclusively reconstructed in the DELPHI detector at LEP, orbital and radial excitations of non strange charmed mesons are studied. The multiplicities of the two narrow $D^0_1$ and $D^{*0}_2$ orbital excitations are measured in $Z^0 \to c \bar c$ and $Z^0 \to b \bar b$ decays. Preliminary results are obtained on the production of broad D$^{**}$ states, using B meson semi-leptonic decays. A narrow signal of 66 $\pm$ 14 events is observed in the $(D^{*+} π^+ π^-)$ final state, interpreted as the first evidence of the predicted $D^{*'}$ radial excitation.
Understanding the detailed structure of energy flow within jets, a field known as jet substructure, plays a central role in searches for new physics, and precision studies of QCD. Many applications of jet substructure require an understanding of jets initiated by heavy quarks, whose description has lagged behind remarkable recent progress for massless jets. In this Letter, we initiate a study of correlation functions of energy flow operators on beauty and charm jets to illuminate the effects of the intrinsic mass of the elementary particles of QCD. We present a factorization theorem incorporat…
Heavy quarks, produced in hard parton scatterings in the early stage of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, are ideal probes to investigate the properties of the Quark--Gluon Plasma (QGP) produced in such collisions. Measurements of heavy-flavour jets can provide constraints on energy-loss models. In particular, they add information on how the radiated energy is dissipated in the medium. Studies of angular correlations between heavy-flavour and charged particles allow us to characterize the heavy-quark fragmentation process and its possible modification in a hot nuclear matter environment…
We consider longitudinal, parity-violating single-spin asymmetries in proton-proton collisions at RHIC. The focus of this study is on the production of single-inclusive jets, as well as on jets that contain a charm quark. While the asymmetry for inclusive jets turns out to be small, we find considerably larger effects for the case of charm production. We also investigate the role of leading threshold logarithms and find that they increase the polarized and unpolarized cross sections and reduce the spin asymmetry.

A search for charged Higgs boson decaying to a charm and a bottom quark (H$^+\to$ c$\overline{\mathrm{b}}$) is performed using 19.7 fb$^{-1}$ of pp collision data at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV. The production mechanism investigated in this search is $\mathrm{t\overline{t}}$ pair production in which one top quark decays to a charged Higgs boson and a bottom quark and the other decays to a charged lepton, a neutrino, and a bottom quark. Charged Higgs boson decays to $\mathrm{c\overline{b}}$ are searched for, resulting in a final state containing at least four jets, a charged lepton (muon or electron), a…
A search for the pair production of scalar top quarks, or stops, has been performed in 360 pb-1 of data from p pbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The stop decay mode considered is stop into c chi, where chi is the lightest supersymmetric particle. The topology analyzed therefore consists of a pair of acoplanar heavy-flavor jets with missing transverse energy. The data and standard model expectation are in agreement, and a 95% C.L. exclusion domain in the stop and chi mass plane has been determined, extending t…
Measurements of the production cross-section for a $Z$ boson in association with $b$- or $c$-jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector
We report on a search for the supersymmetric partner of the top quark (scalar top) decaying into a charm quark and a neutralino in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. The data sample, collected by the CDFII detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.6 fb-1. Candidate events are selected by requiring two or more jets and a large imbalance in the transverse momentum. To enhance the analysis sensitivity, at least one of the jets is required to be identified as originating from a charm quark using an algorithm specifically designed for this analysis. The sel…
