We leverage powerful mathematical tools stemming from optimal transport theory and transform them into an efficient algorithm to reconstruct the fluctuations of the primordial density field, built on solving the Monge-Ampère-Kantorovich equation. Our algorithm computes the optimal transport between an initial uniform continuous density field, partitioned into Laguerre cells, and a final input set of discrete point masses, linking the early to the late Universe. While existing early universe reconstruction algorithms based on fully discrete combinatorial methods are limited to a few hundred thousand points, our algorithm scales up well beyond this limit, since it takes the form of a well-posed smooth convex optimization problem, solved using a Newton method. We run our algorithm on cosmological $N$-body simulations, from the AbacusCosmos suite, and reconstruct the initial positions of $\mathcal{O}(10^7)$ particles within a few hours with an off-the-shelf personal computer. We show that our method allows a unique, fast and precise recovery of subtle features of the initial power spectrum, such as the baryonic acoustic oscillations.
In this paper we consider FRW cosmology in modified gravity which contain arbitrary functions $f(ϕ)$. It is shown that the bouncing solution appears in the model whereas the equation of state (EoS) parameter crosses the phantom divider. The reconstruction of the model is also investigated with the aim to reconstruct the arbitrary functions and variables of the model.
Using redshift space distortion data, we perform model-independent reconstructions of the growth history of matter inhomogeneity in the expanding Universe using two methods: crossing statistics and Gaussian processes. We then reconstruct the corresponding history of the Universe background expansion and fit it to type Ia supernovae data, putting constraints on $(Ω_\mathrm{m,0},σ_{8,0})$. The results obtained are consistent with the concordance flat-$Λ$CDM model and General Relativity as the gravity theory given the current quality of the inhomogeneity growth data.
Based on the largest homogeneously reduced set of Type Ia supernova luminosity data currently available -- the Union2 sample -- we reconstruct the expansion history of the Universe in a model-independent approach. Our method tests the geometry of the Universe directly without reverting to any assumptions made on its energy content. This allows us to constrain Dark Energy models and non-standard cosmologies in a straightforward way. The applicability of the presented method is not restricted to testing cosmological models. It can be a valuable tool for pointing out systematic errors hidden in t…
We construct a four-dimensional domain wall universe by using the Brans-Dicke type gravity with two scalar field. We give a formulation where for arbitrarily given warp factor and scale factor, we construct an action which reproduces both of the warp and scale factors as a solution of the Einstein equation and the field equations given by the action. This formulation could be called as reconstruction. We show that the model does not contain ghost with negative kinetic term and there occur the localization of gravity as in the Randall-Sundrum model. It should be noted that in the equation of th…
A new strategy for the reconstruction of $f(R)$ gravity models have been attempted using Raychaudhuri equation. Two examples, one for an eternally accelerating universe and the other for one that mimics a $Λ$CDM expansion history have been worked out. For both the cases, the relevant $f=f(R)$ could be found out analytically. In the first case, $f(R)$ is found to be a combination of power-law terms and in the expression for the second case involves hypergeometric functions. The evolution history of the universe, given as specific values of the kinematical quantities like the jerk or the deceler…
The present work is based upon a parametric reconstruction of the effective or total equation of state in a model for the universe with accelerated expansion. The constraints on the model parameters are obtained by maximum likelihood analysis using the supernova distance modulus data, observational Hubble data, baryon acoustic oscillation data and cosmic microwave background shift parameter data. For statistical comparison, the same analysis has also been carried out for the wCDM dark energy model. Different model selection criteria (Akaike information criterion (AIC)) and (Bayesian Informatio…
The ELUCID project aims to build a series of realistic cosmological simulations that reproduce the spatial and mass distribution of the galaxies as observed in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). This requires powerful reconstruction techniques to create constrained initial conditions. We test the reconstruction method by applying it to several $N$-body simulations. We use 2 medium resolution simulations from each of which three additional constrained $N$-body simulations were produced. We compare the resulting friend of friend catalogs by using the particle indexes as tracers, and quantify t…
Optimal transport theory has recently reemerged as a vastly resourceful field of mathematics with elegant applications across physics and computer science. Harnessing methods from geometry processing, we report on the efficient implementation for a specific problem in cosmology -- the reconstruction of the linear density field from low redshifts, in particular the recovery of the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) scale. We demonstrate our algorithm's accuracy by retrieving the BAO scale in noise-less cosmological simulations that are dedicated to cancel cosmic variance; we find uncertainties…
High quality reconstructions of the three dimensional velocity and density fields of the local Universe are essential to study the local Large Scale Structure. In this paper, the Wiener Filter reconstruction technique is applied to galaxy radial peculiar velocity catalogs to understand how the Hubble constant (H0) value and the grouping scheme affect the reconstructions. While H0 is used to derive radial peculiar velocities from galaxy distance measurements and total velocities, the grouping scheme serves the purpose of removing non linear motions. Two different grouping schemes (based on the …
In this paper we consider quintessence reconstruction of interacting holographic dark energy in a non-flat background. As system's IR cutoff we choose the radius of the event horizon measured on the sphere of the horizon, defined as $L=ar(t)$. To this end we construct a quintessence model by a real, single scalar field. Evolution of the potential, $V(ϕ)$, as well as the dynamics of the scalar field, $ϕ$, are obtained according to the respective holographic dark energy. The reconstructed potentials show a cosmological constant behavior for the present time. We constrain the model parameters in …
We reconstruct the expansion history of the Universe using type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) in a manner independent of any cosmological model assumptions. To do so, we implement a non-parametric iterative smoothing method on the Joint Light-curve Analysis (JLA) data while exploring the SN Ia light-curve hyper-parameter space by Monte Carlo Markov Chain sampling. We test to see how the posteriors of these hyper-parameters depend on cosmology, whether using different dark energy models or reconstructions shift these posteriors. Our constraints on the SN Ia light-curve hyper-parameters from our model-i…
We propose general f(R,T,R_{μν}T^{μν}) theory as generalization of covariant Horava-like gravity with dynamical Lorentz symmetry breaking. FRLW cosmological dynamics for several versions of such theory is considered. The reconstruction of the above action is explicitly done, including the numerical reconstruction for the occurrence of ΛCDM universe. De Sitter universe solutions in the presence of non-constant fluid are also presented. The problem of matter instability in f(R,T,R_{μν}T^{μν}) gravity is discussed.
The Zeldovich approximation, 1st order Lagrangian perturbation theory, provides a good description of the clustering of matter and galaxies on large scales. The acoustic feature in the large-scale correlation function of galaxies imprinted by sound waves in the early Universe has been successfully used as a `standard ruler' to constrain the expansion history of the Universe. The standard ruler can be improved if a process known as density field reconstruction is employed. In this paper we develop the Zeldovich formalism to compute the correlation function of biased tracers in both real- and re…
Distance measurements are currently the most powerful tool to study the expansion history of the universe without specifying its matter content nor any theory of gravitation. Assuming only an isotropic, homogeneous and flat universe, in this work we introduce a model-independent method to reconstruct directly the deceleration function via a piecewise function. Including a penalty factor, we are able to vary continuously the complexity of the deceleration function from a linear case to an arbitrary $(n+1)$-knots spline interpolation. We carry out a Monte Carlo (MC) analysis to determine the bes…
We review how we can construct the gravity models which reproduces the arbitrary development of the universe. We consider the reconstruction in the Einstein gravity coupled with generalized perfect fluid, scalar-Einstein gravity, scalar-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, Einstein-$F(G)$-gravity, and $F(R)$-gravity. Very explicit formulas are given to reconstruct the models, which could be used when we find the detailed data of the development of the universe by future observations. Especially we find the formulas using e-foldings, which has a direct relation with observed redshift. As long as we o…
Motivated by the work [K. Karami, J. Fehri, {\it Phys. Lett. B} {\bf 684}, 61 (2010)] and [A. Sheykhi, {\it Phys. Lett. B} {\bf 681}, 205 (2009)], we generalize their work to the new holographic dark energy model with $ρ_D=\frac{3ϕ^2}{4ω}(μH^2+ν\dot{H})$ in the framework of Brans-Dicke cosmology. Concretely, we study the correspondence between the quintessence, tachyon, K-essence, dilaton scalar field and Chaplygin gas model with the new holographic dark energy model in the non-flat Brans-Dicke universe. Furthermore, we reconstruct the potentials and dynamics for these models. By analysis we c…

To probe the late evolution history of the Universe, we adopt two kinds of optimal basis systems. One of them is constructed by performing the principle component analysis (PCA) and the other is build by taking the multidimensional scaling (MDS) approach. Cosmological observables such as the luminosity distance can be decomposed into these basis systems. These basis are optimized for different kinds of cosmological models that based on different physical assumptions, even for a mixture model of them. Therefore, the so-called feature space that projected from the basis systems is cosmological m…
This paper presents an analysis of the local peculiar velocity field based on the Wiener Filter reconstruction method. We used our currently available catalog of distance measurements containing 1,797 galaxies within 3000 km/s: Cosmicflows-1. The Wiener Filter method is used to recover the full 3D peculiar velocity field from the observed map of radial velocities and to recover the underlying linear density field. The velocity field within a data zone of 3000 km/s is decomposed into a local component that is generated within the data zone and a tidal one that is generated by the mass distribut…
This work investigates the impact of cosmic flows and density perturbations on Hubble constant $H_0$ measurements using nonlinear phase-space reconstructions of the Local Universe (LU). In particular, we rely on 25 constrained N-body simulations of the LU using the 2MRS galaxy sample within distances of 90 Mpc/h. These have been randomly extended up to volumes enclosing 360 Mpc/h with augmented Lagrangian perturbation theory (750 simulations in total), accounting in this way for gravitational mode coupling from larger scales, correcting for periodic boundary effects, and estimating systematics…
In the context of a Hubble tension problem that is growing in its statistical significance, we reconsider the effectiveness of non-parametric reconstruction techniques which are independent of prescriptive cosmological models. By taking cosmic chronometers, Type Ia Supernovae and baryonic acoustic oscillation data, we compare and contrast two important reconstruction approaches, namely Gaussian processes (GP) and the \textbf{Lo}cally w\textbf{e}ighted \textbf{S}catterplot \textbf{S}moothing together with \textbf{Sim}ulation and \textbf{ex}trapolation method (LOESS-Simex or LS). In the context …
Supernovae Ia (SNe) can provide a unique window on the large scale structure (LSS) of the Universe at redshifts where few other observations are available, by solving the inversion problem (IP) consisting in reconstructing the LSS from its effects on the observed luminosity distance. So far the IP was solved assuming some restrictions about space-time, such as spherical symmetry for example, while we obtain for the first time solutions of the IP problem for arbitrary space-time geometries using deep learning. The method is based on the use of convolutional neural networks (CNN) trained on simu…
21 cm intensity mapping has emerged as a promising technique to map the large-scale structure of the Universe, at redshifts $z$ from 1 to 10. Unfortunately, many of the key cross-correlations with the cosmic microwave background and photo-$z$ galaxies have been thought to be impossible due to the foreground contamination for radial modes with small wave numbers. In this paper, we apply tidal reconstruction to the simulated 21 cm fields and recover the lost large-scale radial modes successfully. We estimate the detectability of the cross-correlation signals and find they can be detected at high…
We study the semi-holographic idea in context of decaying dark components. The energy flow between dark energy and the compensating dark matter is thermodynamically generalized to involve a particle number variable dark component with non-zero chemical potential. It's found that, unlike the original semi-holographic model, no cosmological constant is needed for a dynamical evolution of the universe. A transient phantom phase appears while a non-trivial dark energy-dark matter scaling solution keeps at late time, which evades the big-rip and helps to resolve the coincidence problem. For reasona…
The coupling between spin and torsion in the Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble theory of gravity generates gravitational repulsion at very high densities, which prevents a singularity in a black hole and may create there a new universe. We show that quantum particle production in such a universe near the last bounce, which represents the Big Bang gives the dynamics that solves the horizon, flatness, and homogeneity problems in cosmology. For a particular range of the particle production coefficient, we obtain a nearly constant Hubble parameter that gives an exponential expansion of the universe wi…
A plethora of observational data obtained over the last couple of decades has allowed cosmology to enter into a precision era and has led to the foundation of the standard cosmological constant and cold dark matter paradigm, known as the $Λ$CDM model. Given the many possible extensions of this concordance model, we present here several novel consistency tests which could be used to probe for deviations from $Λ$CDM. First, we derive a joint consistency test for the spatial curvature $Ω_{k,0}$ and the matter density $Ω_\textrm{m,0}$ parameters, constructed using only the Hubble rate $H(z)$, whic…
Combining Supernovae, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and Redshift-Space Distortions data from the next generation of (Stage-IV) cosmological surveys, we aim to reconstruct the expansion history up to large redshifts using forward-modeling of $f_{\mathrm DE}(z) = ρ_\mathrm{DE}(z)/ρ_\mathrm{DE,0}$ with Gaussian processes (GP). In order to reconstruct cosmological quantities at high redshifts where few or no data are available, we adopt a new approach to GP which enforces the following minimal assumptions: a) Our cosmology corresponds to a flat Friedman-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) universe; b)…
By assuming that a dark component (dark energy) in the universe strictly obeys the holographic principle, that is, its entropy is one fourth of the apparent horizon, we find that the existence of the other dark component (dark matter) is compulsory, as a compensation of dark energy, based on the first law of thermodynamics. By using the method of dynamical system analysis, we find that there exists a stable dark energy-dark matter scaling solution at late time, which is helpful to solve the coincidence problem. For reasonable parameters, the deceleration parameter is well consistent with curre…
We present a forward-modelled velocity field reconstruction algorithm that performs the reconstruction of the mass density field using only peculiar velocity data. Our method consistently accounts for the inhomogeneous Malmquist bias using analytic integration along the line-of-sight. By testing our method on a simulation, we show that our method gives an unbiased reconstruction of the velocity field. We show that not accounting for the inhomogeneous Malmquist bias can lead to significant biases in the forward-modelled reconstructions. We applied our method to a peculiar velocity data set cons…
The evolution of dark energy density is a crucial quantity in understanding the nature of dark energy. Often, the quantity is described by the so-called equation of state, that is the ratio of dark energy pressure to its density. In this scenario, the dark energy density is always positive throughout cosmic history and a negative value is not allowed. Assuming a homogeneous and isotropic universe, we reconstruct the dark energy density directly from observational data and investigate its evolution through cosmic history. We consider the latest SNIa, BAO and cosmic chronometer data and reconstr…
An essential quantity required to understand the physics of the early Universe, in particular the inflationary epoch, is the primordial scalar potential $Φ$ and its statistics. We present for the first time an all-sky reconstruction of $Φ$ with corresponding $1σ$-uncertainty from WMAP's cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature data -- a map of the very early Universe right after the inflationary epoch. This has been achieved by applying a Bayesian inference method that separates the whole inverse problem of the reconstruction into many independent ones, each of them solved by an optimal l…
This article publicly releases three-dimensional reconstructions of the local Universe gravitational field below z=0.8 that were computed using the CosmicFlows-4 catalog of 56,000 galaxy distances and its sub-sample of 1,008 type Ia supernovae distances. The article also provides measurements of the growth rate of structure using the pairwise correlation of radial peculiar velocities f sigma8 = 0.38(+/-0.04) (ungrouped CF4), f sigma8 = 0.36(+/-0.05) (grouped CF4), f sigma8 = 0.30(+/-0.06) (SNIa) and of the bulk flow in the 3D reconstructed Local Universe of 230 +/- 136 km s-1 at 300 Mpc of dis…
In this paper, we consider a simple form of expansion history of Universe referred to as the hybrid expansion law - a product of power-law and exponential type of functions. The ansatz by construction mimics the power-law and de Sitter cosmologies as special cases but also provides an elegant description of the transition from deceleration to cosmic acceleration. We point out the Brans-Dicke realization of the cosmic history under consideration. We construct potentials for quintessence, phantom and tachyon fields, which can give rise to the hybrid expansion law in general relativity. We invest…
The properties of the quantum universe on extremely small spacetime scales are studied in the semi-classical approach to the well-defined quantum model. It is shown that near the initial cosmological singularity point quantum gravity effects ~ h exhibit themselves in the form of additional matter source with the negative pressure and the equation of state as for ultrastiff matter. The analytical solution of the equations of theory of gravity, in which matter is represented by the radiation and additional matter source of quantum nature, is found. It is shown that in the stage of the evolution …
We introduce in $f(R)$ gravity--Palatini formalism the method of inverse problem to extract the action from the expansion history of the universe. First, we use an ansatz for the scale factor and apply the inverse method to derive an appropriate action for the gravity. In the second step we use the Supernova Type Ia data set from the Union sample and obtain a smoothed function for the Hubble parameter up to the redshift~1.7. We apply the smoothed Hubble parameter in the inverse approach and reconstruct the corresponding action in $f(R)$ gravity. In the next step we investigate the viability of…
The large-angle, low multipole cosmic microwave background (CMB) provides a unique view of the largest angular scales in the Universe. Study of these scales is hampered by the facts that we have only one Universe to observe, only a few independent samples of the underlying statistical distribution of these modes, and an incomplete sky to observe due to the interposing Galaxy. Techniques for reconstructing a full sky from partial sky data are well known and have been applied to the large angular scales. In this work we critically study the reconstruction process and show that, in practise, the …
When measuring the value of the Hubble parameter, $H_0$, it is necessary to know the recession velocity free of the effects of peculiar velocities. In this work, we study different models of peculiar velocity in the local Universe. In particular, we compare models based on density reconstruction from galaxy redshift surveys and kernel smoothing of peculiar velocity data. The velocity field from the density reconstruction is obtained using the 2M++ galaxy redshift compilation, which is compared to two adaptive kernel-smoothed velocity fields: the first obtained from the 6dF Fundamental Plane sa…
Visualizing the high-redshift Universe is difficult due to the dearth of available data; however, the Lyman-alpha forest provides a means to map the intergalactic medium at redshifts not accessible to large galaxy surveys. Large-scale structure surveys, such as the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), have collected quasar (QSO) spectra that enable the reconstruction of HI density fluctuations. The data fall on a collection of lines defined by the lines-of-sight (LOS) of the QSO, and a major issue with producing a 3D reconstruction is determining how to model the regions between the…
The present work is based on a parametric reconstruction of the deceleration parameter $q(z)$ in a model for the spatially flat FRW universe filled with dark energy and non-relativistic matter. In cosmology, the parametric reconstruction technique deals with an attempt to build up a model by choosing some specific evolution scenario for a cosmological parameter and then estimate the values of the parameters with the help of different observational datasets. In this paper, we have proposed a logarithmic parametrization of $q(z)$ to probe the evolution history of the universe. Using the type Ia …
Machine learning (ML) algorithms have revolutionized the way we interpret data in astronomy, particle physics, biology and even economics, since they can remove biases due to a priori chosen models. Here we apply a particular ML method, the genetic algorithms (GA), to cosmological data that describes the background expansion of the Universe, namely the Pantheon Type Ia supernovae and the Hubble expansion history $H(z)$ datasets. We obtain model independent and nonparametric reconstructions of the luminosity distance $d_L(z)$ and Hubble parameter $H(z)$ without assuming any dark energy model or…
The cosmic curvature density parameter has been constrained in the present work independent of any background cosmological model. The reconstruction is performed adopting the non-parametric Gaussian Processes (GP). The constraints on $Ω_{k0}$ are obtained via a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis. Late-time cosmological probes viz., the Supernova (SN) distance modulus data, the Cosmic Chronometer (CC) and the radial Baryon Acoustic Oscillations ($r$BAO) measurements of the Hubble data have been utilized for this purpose. The results are further combined with the data from redshift space d…
We extend the scalar-tensor reconstruction techniques for classical cosmology frameworks, in the context of loop quantum cosmology. After presenting in some detail how the equations are generalized in the loop quantum cosmology case, we discuss which new features and limitations does the quantum framework brings along, and we use various illustrative examples in order to demonstrate how the method works. As we show the energy density has two different classes of solutions, and one of these yields the correct classical limit while the second captures the quantum phenomena. We study in detail th…
