We propose the first learning-based approach for fast moving objects detection. Such objects are highly blurred and move over large distances within one video frame. Fast moving objects are associated with a deblurring and matting problem, also called deblatting. We show that the separation of deblatting into consecutive matting and deblurring allows achieving real-time performance, i.e. an order of magnitude speed-up, and thus enabling new classes of application. The proposed method detects fast moving objects as a truncated distance function to the trajectory by learning from synthetic data. For the sharp appearance estimation and accurate trajectory estimation, we propose a matting and fitting network that estimates the blurred appearance without background, followed by an energy minimization based deblurring. The state-of-the-art methods are outperformed in terms of recall, precision, trajectory estimation, and sharp appearance reconstruction. Compared to other methods, such as deblatting, the inference is of several orders of magnitude faster and allows applications such as real-time fast moving object detection and retrieval in large video collections.
Segmenting each moving object instance in a scene is essential for many applications. But like many other computer vision tasks, this task performs well in optimal weather, but then adverse weather tends to fail. To be robust in weather conditions, the usual way is to train network in data of given weather pattern or to fuse multiple sensors. We focus on a new possibility, that is, to improve its resilience to weather interference through the network's structural design. First, we propose a novel FPN structure called RiWFPN with a progressive top-down interaction and attention refinement modul…

Human pose estimation is one of the key problems in computer vision that has been studied in the recent years. The significance of human pose estimation is in the higher level tasks of understanding human actions applications such as recognition of anomalous actions present in videos and many other related applications. The human poses can be estimated by extracting silhouettes of humans as silhouettes are robust to variations and it gives the shape information of the human body. Some common challenges include illumination changes, variation in environments, and variation in human appearances.…

Real-time detection of moving objects involves memorisation of features in the template image and their comparison with those in the test image. At high sampling rates, such techniques face the problems of high algorithmic complexity and component delays. We present a new resistive switching based threshold logic cell which encodes the pixels of a template image. The cell comprises a voltage divider circuit that programs the resistances of the memristors arranged in a single node threshold logic network and the output is encoded as a binary value using a CMOS inverter gate. When a test image i…
Moving object detection and its associated background-foreground separation have been widely used in a lot of applications, including computer vision, transportation and surveillance. Due to the presence of the static background, a video can be naturally decomposed into a low-rank background and a sparse foreground. Many regularization techniques, such as matrix nuclear norm, have been imposed on the background. In the meanwhile, sparsity or smoothness based regularizations, such as total variation and $\ell_1$, can be imposed on the foreground. Moreover, graph Laplacians are further imposed t…

In optical flow estimation task, coarse-to-fine (C2F) warping strategy is widely used to deal with the large displacement problem and provides efficiency and speed. However, limited by the small search range between the first images and warped second images, current coarse-to-fine optical flow networks fail to capture small and fast-moving objects which disappear at coarse resolution levels. To address this problem, we introduce a lightweight but effective Global Matching Component (GMC) to grab global matching features. We propose a new Hybrid Matching Optical Flow Network (HMFlow) by integra…

Tracking fast moving objects, which appear as blurred streaks in video sequences, is a difficult task for standard trackers as the object position does not overlap in consecutive video frames and texture information of the objects is blurred. Up-to-date approaches tuned for this task are based on background subtraction with static background and slow deblurring algorithms. In this paper, we present a tracking-by-segmentation approach implemented using state-of-the-art deep learning methods that performs near-realtime tracking on real-world video sequences. We implemented a physically plausible…

We propose a novel method that tracks fast moving objects, mainly non-uniform spherical, in full 6 degrees of freedom, estimating simultaneously their 3D motion trajectory, 3D pose and object appearance changes with a time step that is a fraction of the video frame exposure time. The sub-frame object localization and appearance estimation allows realistic temporal super-resolution and precise shape estimation. The method, called TbD-3D (Tracking by Deblatting in 3D) relies on a novel reconstruction algorithm which solves a piece-wise deblurring and matting problem. The 3D rotation is estimated…
With more and more large-scale datasets available for training, visual tracking has made great progress in recent years. However, current research in the field mainly focuses on tracking generic objects. In this paper, we present TSFMO, a benchmark for \textbf{T}racking \textbf{S}mall and \textbf{F}ast \textbf{M}oving \textbf{O}bjects. This benchmark aims to encourage research in developing novel and accurate methods for this challenging task particularly. TSFMO consists of 250 sequences with about 50k frames in total. Each frame in these sequences is carefully and manually annotated with a bo…

The notion of a Fast Moving Object (FMO), i.e. an object that moves over a distance exceeding its size within the exposure time, is introduced. FMOs may, and typically do, rotate with high angular speed. FMOs are very common in sports videos, but are not rare elsewhere. In a single frame, such objects are often barely visible and appear as semi-transparent streaks. A method for the detection and tracking of FMOs is proposed. The method consists of three distinct algorithms, which form an efficient localization pipeline that operates successfully in a broad range of conditions. We show that it …

Discriminating small moving objects within complex visual environments is a significant challenge for autonomous micro robots that are generally limited in computational power. By exploiting their highly evolved visual systems, flying insects can effectively detect mates and track prey during rapid pursuits, even though the small targets equate to only a few pixels in their visual field. The high degree of sensitivity to small target movement is supported by a class of specialized neurons called small target motion detectors (STMDs). Existing STMD-based computational models normally comprise f…

We address the novel task of jointly reconstructing the 3D shape, texture, and motion of an object from a single motion-blurred image. While previous approaches address the deblurring problem only in the 2D image domain, our proposed rigorous modeling of all object properties in the 3D domain enables the correct description of arbitrary object motion. This leads to significantly better image decomposition and sharper deblurring results. We model the observed appearance of a motion-blurred object as a combination of the background and a 3D object with constant translation and rotation. Our meth…
Interactive autonomous applications require robustness of the perception engine to artifacts in unconstrained videos. In this paper, we examine the effect of camera motion on the task of action detection. We develop a novel ranking method to rank videos based on the degree of global camera motion. For the high ranking camera videos we show that the accuracy of action detection is decreased. We propose an action detection pipeline that is robust to the camera motion effect and verify it empirically. Specifically, we do actor feature alignment across frames and couple global scene features with …

This work presents a novel approach for robust PCA with total variation regularization for foreground-background separation and denoising on noisy, moving camera video. Our proposed algorithm registers the raw (possibly corrupted) frames of a video and then jointly processes the registered frames to produce a decomposition of the scene into a low-rank background component that captures the static components of the scene, a smooth foreground component that captures the dynamic components of the scene, and a sparse component that can isolate corruptions and other non-idealities. Unlike existing …
Detecting moving objects in dynamic scenes from sequences of lidar scans is an important task in object tracking, mapping, localization, and navigation. Many works focus on changes detection in previously observed scenes, while a very limited amount of literature addresses moving objects detection. The state-of-the-art method exploits Dempster-Shafer Theory to evaluate the occupancy of a lidar scan and to discriminate points belonging to the static scene from moving ones. In this paper we improve both speed and accuracy of this method by discretizing the occupancy representation, and by removi…

Objects moving at high speed appear significantly blurred when captured with cameras. The blurry appearance is especially ambiguous when the object has complex shape or texture. In such cases, classical methods, or even humans, are unable to recover the object's appearance and motion. We propose a method that, given a single image with its estimated background, outputs the object's appearance and position in a series of sub-frames as if captured by a high-speed camera (i.e. temporal super-resolution). The proposed generative model embeds an image of the blurred object into a latent space repre…
Moving object detection is a critical task for autonomous vehicles. As dynamic objects represent higher collision risk than static ones, our own ego-trajectories have to be planned attending to the future states of the moving elements of the scene. Motion can be perceived using temporal information such as optical flow. Conventional optical flow computation is based on camera sensors only, which makes it prone to failure in conditions with low illumination. On the other hand, LiDAR sensors are independent of illumination, as they measure the time-of-flight of their own emitted lasers. In this …

The use of drones for aerial cinematography has revolutionized several applications and industries that require live and dynamic camera viewpoints such as entertainment, sports, and security. However, safely controlling a drone while filming a moving target usually requires multiple expert human operators; hence the need for an autonomous cinematographer. Current approaches have severe real-life limitations such as requiring fully scripted scenes, high-precision motion-capture systems or GPS tags to localize targets, and prior maps of the environment to avoid obstacles and plan for occlusion. …
