We report a linear scaling law for an electrical voltage as a function of the pressure drop in capillary pipes and ducts. This voltage is generated by a process which is termed spin hydrodynamic generation (SHDG), a result of the collective electron spin--coupling to the vorticity field in the laminar flow in combination with an inverse spin-Hall effect. We study this phenomenon in laminar duct flows with different width-to-height aspect ratios ranging from 1 (square ducts) to infinite (two dimensional channels). First, we analytically solve the governing Valet-Fert spin diffusion equations for the SHDG by means of the method of small parameters together with proper boundary conditions for the set of inhomogeneous elliptic partial differential equations. Secondly, the proposed linear scaling law is validated through a series of experiments using capillary tubes with rectangular and square cross-sections. The experimental results show a very good agreement to the analytically found scaling law. A subsequent substitution of the bulk velocity of the laminar wall-bounded flows by the pressure drop reveals a universal scaling law for the electrical voltage that incorporates all pipe and duct geometries which we could study in our experiments. Finally, the efficiency of the system is estimated for circular pipes, rectangular and square ducts. This study shows that the efficiency of a spin hydrodynamic generator is the same for a circular pipe and a square duct with the same diameter and height, respectively. Hence, due to the ease of manufacturing and the possibility to scale the experiments up to parallel settings in a compact form, micro-channels with a square cross-section seem to be the optimum for a spin hydrodynamic generator.
We study the inertial migration of finite-size neutrally buoyant spherical particles in dilute and semi-dilute suspensions in laminar square duct flow. We perform several direct numerical simulations using an immersed boundary method to investigate the effects of the bulk Reynolds number $Re_b$, particle Reynolds number $Re_p$ and duct to particle size ratio $h/a$ at different solid volume fractions $ϕ$, from very dilute conditions to $20\%$. We show that the bulk Reynolds number $Re_b$ is the key parameter in inertial migration of particles in dilute suspensions. At low solid volume fraction …
This work applies resolvent analysis to incompressible flow through a rectangular duct, in order to identify dominant linear energy-amplification mechanisms present in such flows. In particular, we formulate the resolvent operator from linearizing the Navier--Stokes equations about a two-dimensional base/mean flow. The laminar base flow only has a nonzero streamwise velocity component, while the turbulent case exhibits a secondary mean flow (Prandtl's secondary flow of the second kind). A singular value decomposition of the resolvent operator allows for the identification of structures corresp…
We present the analytical solution for the two-dimensional velocity and density fields within an approximation for laminar stratified inclined duct (SID) flows where diffusion dominates over inertia in the along-channel momentum equation but it is negligible in the density transport equation. We refer to this approximation as the hydrostatic/gravitational/viscous in momentum and advective in density (HGV-A) approximation due to the leading balances in the governing equations. The analytical solution is valid for laminar flows in a two-layer configuration in the limit of long ducts. Under such …
The flow transformation and the generation of vortex structures by a strong magnetic dipole field in a liquid metal duct flow is studied by means of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. The dipole is considered as the paradigm for a magnetic obstacle which will deviate the streamlines due to Lorentz forces acting on the fluid elements. The duct is of square cross-section. The dipole is located above the top wall and is centered in spanwise direction. Our model uses the quasi-static approximation which is applicable in the limit of small magnetic Reynolds numbers. The analysis covers…
This study considers the linear stability of Poiseuille-Rayleigh-Bénard flows, subjected to a transverse magnetic field to understand the instabilities that arise from the complex interaction between the effects of shear, thermal stratification and magnetic damping. This fundamental study is motivated in part by the desire to enhance heat transfer in the blanket ducts of nuclear fusion reactors. In pure MHD flows, the imposed transverse magnetic field causes the flow to become quasi-2D and exhibit disturbances that are localised to the horizontal walls. However, the vertical temperature strati…
The present work focuses on the study of mixed convection of a purely viscous shear-thinning fluid in a horizontal annular eccentric duct. The inner and outer cylinders are heated with constant and uniform heat flux densities. The objective of this work is to study the effect of the variation of eccentricity, rheological behavior of the fluid as well as the thermodependency of the rheological parameters on the reorganization of the flow and thermal stratification caused by the buoyancy forces. At the entrance of the heating zone, the dynamic regime is assumed to be established and the temperat…
The paper presents 3D numerical results for the laminar liquid metal flow in a rectangular duct compared with experimental results. It is shown that the magnetic interaction parameter $N$ is the main parameter governing the flow provided turbulent pulsations are locally suppressed by magnetic field.
This article investigates the formation of spanwise vorticity in the velocity streaks of the oblique laminar- turbulent bands of plane Couette flow (PCF) by mean of Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS). The spanwise vorticity is created by a roll-up type development of the streamwise-wall normal shear layer of the velocity streaks. It is advected by the large scale flow along the bands. We propose a criterion on spanwise vorticity which detects these events in order to perform systematic measurements. Beside of the streamwise and spanwise correlation lengths of the rolls, their advection velocit…
This paper is concerned with the transition of the laminar flow in a duct of square cross-section. Like in the similar case of the pipe flow, the motion is linearly stable for all Reynolds numbers, rendering this flow a suitable candidate for a study of the 'bypass' path to turbulence. It has already been shown \citep{Biau_JFM_2008} that the classical linear optimal perturbation problem, yielding optimal disturbances in the form of longitudinal vortices, fails to provide an 'optimal' path to turbulence, i.e. optimal perturbations do not elicit a significant nonlinear response from the flow. Pr…

We use fluctuating hydrodynamics to evaluate the enhancement of thermally excited fluctuations in laminar fluid flow using plane Couette flow as a representative example. In a previous publication [J. Stat. Phys. vol. 144 (2011) p. 774] we derived the energy amplification arising from thermally excited wall-normal fluctuations by solving a fluctuating Orr-Sommerfeld equation. In the present paper we derive the energy amplification arising from wall-normal vorticity fluctuation by solving a fluctuating Squire equation. The thermally excited wall-normal vorticity fluctuations turn out to yield t…
Spin hydrodynamic coupling is a recently discovered method to directly generate electricity from an electrically conducting fluid flow in the absence of Lorentz forces. This method relies on a collective coupling of electron spins - the internal quantum mechanical angular momentum of the electrons - with the local vorticity of a fluid flow. In this work, we experimentally investigate the spin hydrodynamic coupling in circular and non-circular capillary pipe flows and extend a previously obtained range of Reynolds numbers to smaller and larger values, 20<Re<21,500, using the conducting liquid m…
We analyse numerically the linear stability of a liquid metal flow in a rectangular duct with perfectly electrically conducting walls subject to a uniform transverse magnetic field. A non-standard three dimensional vector stream function/vorticity formulation is used with Chebyshev collocation method to solve the eigenvalue problem for small-amplitude perturbations. A relatively weak magnetic field is found to render the flow linearly unstable as two weak jets appear close to the centre of the duct at the Hartmann number Ha \approx 9.6. In a sufficiently strong magnetic field, the instability …
We study turbulent flows in pressure-driven ducts with square cross-section through direct numerical simulation in a wide enough range of Reynolds number to reach flow conditions which are representative of fully developed turbulence. Numerical simulations are carried out over extremely long integration times to get adequate convergence of the flow statistics, and specifically high-fidelity representation of the secondary motions which arise. The intensity of the latter is found to be in the order of 1-2% of the bulk velocity, and unaffected by Reynolds number variations. The smallness of the …
We investigate the laminar shedding of hairpin vortices in the wake of a truncated square cylinder placed in a duct, for Reynolds numbers around the critical threshold of the onset of vortex shedding. We single out the formation mechanism of the hairpin vortices by means of a detailed analysis of the flow patterns in the steady regime. We show that unlike in previous studies of similar structures, the dynamics of the hairpin vortices is entwined with that of the counter-rotating pair of streamwise vortices, which we found to be generated in the bottom part of the near wake (these are usually r…
This study is concerned with numerical linear stability analysis of liquid metal flow in a square duct with thin electrically conducting walls subject to a uniform transverse magnetic field. We derive an asymptotic solution for the base flow which is valid not only for high but also moderate magnetic fields. This solution shows that for low wall conductance ratios $c\ll1,$ an extremely strong magnetic field with the Hartmann number $Ha\sim c^{-4}$ is required to attain the asymptotic flow regime considered in the previous studies. We use a vector stream function/vorticity formulation and a Che…
In this paper, we show that the spatio-temporal evolution of incompressible flows in a long circular pipe can be described by vorticity dynamics. The principal techniques to obtain solutions are similar to those used for flows in the whole space. As the consideration of the Navier-Stokes equations is given in a cylindrical co-ordinates system, two aspects of complication arise. One is the interaction of the velocity components in the radial and azimuthal directions, due to the fictitious centrifugal force in the equations of motion. The rate of the vorticity production at the pipe wall depends…
We extend our previous results characterizing the loading properties of a diffusing passive scalar advected by a laminar shear flow in ducts and channels to more general cross-sectional shapes, including regular polygons and smoothed corner ducts originating from deformations of ellipses. For the case of the triangle, short time skewness is calculated exactly to be positive, while long-time asymptotics shows it to be negative. Monte-Carlo simulations confirm these predictions, and document the time scale for sign change. Interestingly, the equilateral triangle is the only regular polygon with …
The study is devoted to the development of new effective tools and methods of ana-lytical hydrodynamics, including problems of existence, smoothness and structure of laminar and turbulent flows. The main problem is complex Navier-Stokes equations and turbulence in complex spaces. The necessity of introducing complex spaces in hydrodynamics is deter-mined by the mechanism of transition of a laminar flow into a turbulent flow. The author pro-poses a non-traditional scenario of the transition: the cause of turbulence is in destruction (cessation of existence) of a laminar flow. The article contai…
We argue that turbulence in superfluids is governed by two dimensionless parameters. One of them is the intrinsic parameter q which characterizes the friction forces acting on a vortex moving with respect to the heat bath, with 1/q playing the same role as the Reynolds number Re=UR/νin classical hydrodynamics. It marks the transition between the "laminar" and turbulent regimes of vortex dynamics. The developed turbulence described by Kolmogorov cascade occurs when Re >> 1 in classical hydrodynamics, and q << 1 in the superfluid hydrodynamics. Another parameter of the superfluid turbulence is t…
We present a study on the nonlinear dynamics of small long-wave disturbances to the laminar state in non-rotating axisymmetric Poiseuille pipe flows. At high Reynolds numbers, the associated Navier-Stokes equations can be reduced to a set of coupled Korteweg-de Vries-type (KdV) equations that support inviscid and smooth travelling waves numerically computed using the Petviashvili method. In physical space they correspond to localized toroidal vortices concentrated near the pipe boundaries (wall vortexons) or that wrap around the pipe axis (centre vortexons), in agreement with the analytical so…
In recent years, open systems with balanced loss and gain, that are invariant under the combined parity and time-reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) operations, have been studied via asymmetries of their solutions. They represent systems as diverse as coupled optical waveguides and electrical or mechanical oscillators. We numerically investigate the asymmetries of incompressible viscous flow in two and three dimensions with "balanced" inflow-outflow ($\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric) configurations. By introducing configuration-dependent classes of asymmetry functions in velocity, kinetic energy density, and vo…
