We use new HST images of nine Green Pea Galaxies (GPGs) to study their resolved structure and color. The choice of filters, F555W and F850LP, together with the redshift of the galaxies ($z\sim 0.25$), minimizes the contribution of the nebular [O\thinspace{\sc iii}] and H$α$ emission lines to the broad-band images. While these galaxies are typically very blue in color, our analysis reveals that it is only the dominant stellar clusters that are blue. Each GPG does clearly show the presence of at least one bright and compact star-forming region, but these are invariably superimposed on a more extended and lower surface brightness emission. Moreover, the colors of the star forming regions are on average bluer than those of the diffuse emission, reaching up to 0.6 magnitudes bluer. Assuming that the diffuse and compact components have constant and single burst Star Formation Histories, respectively, the observed colors imply that the diffuse components (possibly the host galaxy of the star-formation episode) have, on average, old stellar ages ($>1$Gyr), while the star-clusters are younger than 500Myrs. We also discuss the possibility that the diffuse red emission is due to a varying relative contribution of nebular continuum, rather than a different stellar population. With the available data, however, it is not possible to distinguish between these two interpretations. A substantial presence of old stars would indicate that the mechanisms that allow large escape fractions in these local galaxies may be different from those at play during the reionization epoch.
Low-metallicity, compact starburst galaxies referred to as Green Peas (GPs) provide a unique window to study galactic evolution across cosmic epochs. In this work, we present new deep optical spectra for three GPs from OSIRIS at the 10m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), which are studied using a state-of-the-art methodology. A stellar population synthesis is conducted with 1098 spectral templates. The methodology succeeds at characterising stellar populations from 0.5 Myrs to 10 Gyrs. The light distribution shows a large red excess from a single population with $log\left(age\right) > 8.5yr$ in t…
The central parsec of the Milky Way is a very special region of our Galaxy; it contains the supermassive black hole associated with Sgr A* as well as a significant number of early-type stars and a complex structure of streamers of neutral and ionized gas, within two parsecs from the centre, representing a unique laboratory. We report the identification of a high velocity compact nebular filament 2.2 arcsec south of Sgr A*. The structure extends over ~1 arcsec and presents a strong velocity gradient of ~200 km s^{-1} arcsec^{-1}. The peak of maximum emission, seen in [Fe III] and He I lines, is…
We present an observational study of the impacts of the interactions on the stellar population in a sample of galaxy pairs. Long-slit spectra in the wavelength range 3440-7300 Å obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) at Gemini South for fifteen galaxies in nine close pairs were used. The spatial distributions of the stellar population contributions were obtained using the stellar population synthesis code STARLIGHT. Taking into account the different contributions to the emitted light, we found that most of the galaxies in our sample are dominated by the young/intermediate st…
We highlight and discuss the importance of accounting for nebular emission in the SEDs of high redshift galaxies, as lines and continuum emission can contribute significantly or subtly to broad-band photometry. Physical parameters such as the galaxy age, mass, star-formation rate, dust attenuation and others inferred from SED fits can be affected to different extent by the treatment of nebular emission. We analyse a large sample of Lyman break galaxies from z~3-6, and show some main results illustrating e.g. the importance of nebular emission for determinations of the mass-SFR relation, attenu…
In this spectroscopic study of infant massive star clusters, we find that continuum emission from ionized gas rivals the stellar luminosity at optical wavelengths. In addition, we find that nebular line emission is significant in many commonly used broad-band HST filters including the F814W I-band, the F555W V-band and the F435W B-band. Two young massive clusters (YMCs) in NGC 4449 were targeted for spectroscopic observations after Reines et al. (2008a) discovered an F814W I-band excess in their photometric study of radio-detected clusters in the galaxy. The spectra were obtained with the Dual…
We present results of a multi-band Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) and nebular emission line analysis of a sample of 1147 spectroscopically identified dusty star-forming galaxies at 0.49 < z < 2.24 from Herschel/SPIRE and HST/WFC3 grism observations in the five CANDELS fields: AEGIS, GOODS-N, GOODS-S, COSMOS, and UDS. We use the spectroscopic redshifts measured from nebular lines to construct the SEDs of galaxies from the optical to the infrared using HST and Herschel photometry. We further utilize the 3D-HST grism Ha line flux measurements to measure the nebular star-formation rates after …
We analyse the positions of RR Lyrae stars in the central region of the Milky Way. In addition to the overall bar shape detected previously, we find evidence for a peanut shaped structure, in form of overdensities near $\ell=-2$ deg and $1$ deg at $b\sim-3.5$ deg. The corresponding physical distance between the two peaks of the peanut is $\sim0.7$ kpc, significantly shorter than that found from near-IR images (3.3 kpc) and red-clump stars. Qualitatively this is expected from `fractionation' of bar orbits, which we demonstrate to be matched in a simulation of an inside-out growing disc subseque…
We present a study of stellar populations in a sample of spectroscopically-confirmed Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) and Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) at $5.7<z<7$. These galaxies have deep optical and infrared images from Subaru, $HST$, and $Spitzer$/IRAC. We focus on a subset of 27 galaxies with IRAC detections, and characterize their stellar populations utilizing galaxy synthesis models based on the multi-band data and secure redshifts. By incorporating nebular emission estimated from the observed Ly$α$ flux, we are able to break the strong degeneracy of model spectra between young galaxies with promin…
Galaxies occupy different regions of the [OIII]$\lambda5007$/H$β$-versus-[NII]$\lambda6584$/H$α$ emission-line ratio diagram in the distant and local Universe. We investigate the origin of this intriguing result by modelling self-consistently, for the first time, nebular emission from young stars, accreting black holes (BHs) and older, post-asymptotic-giant-branch (post-AGB) stellar populations in galaxy formation simulations in a full cosmological context. In post-processing, we couple new-generation nebular-emission models with high-resolution, cosmological zoom-in simulations of massive gal…
Nebular HeII emission implies the presence of energetic photons (E$\ge$54 eV). Despite the great deal of effort dedicated to understanding HeII ionization, its origin has remained mysterious, particularly in metal-deficient star-forming (SF) galaxies. Unfolding HeII-emitting, metal-poor starbursts at z ~ 0 can yield insight into the powerful ionization processes occurring in the primordial universe. Here we present a new study on the effects that X-ray sources have on the HeII ionization in the extremely metal-poor galaxy IZw18 (Z ~ 3 % Zsolar), whose X-ray emission is dominated by a single hi…

We present new stringent limits on the mass $M_{bh}$ of the central supermassive black hole for a sample of 7 nearby galaxies. Our $M_{bh}$ estimates are based on the dynamical modeling of the central width of the nebular emission lines measured over subarcsecond apertures with the Hubble Space Telescope. The central stellar velocity dispersion $σ_c$ of the sample galaxies is derived from new long-slit spectra from ground-based observations and the bulge effective radius is obtained from a two-dimensional photometric decomposition of the i-band images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The der…
We use integral field spectroscopic (IFS) observations from the Gemini North Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS-N) to study the central H II region in a nearby blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy NGC 4449. The IFS data enable us to explore the variation of physical and chemical conditions of the star-forming region and the surrounding gas on spatial scales as small as 5.5 pc. Our kinematical analysis shows possible signatures of shock ionisation and shell structures in the surroundings of the star-forming region. The metallicity maps of the region, created using direct T$_e$ and indirect strong line …
Various lines of evidence suggest that the cores of a large portion of early-type galaxies (ETGs) are virtually evacuated of warm ionised gas. This implies that the Lyman-continuum (LyC) radiation produced by an assumed active galactic nucleus (AGN) can escape from the nuclei of these systems without being locally reprocessed into nebular emission, which would prevent their reliable spectroscopic classification as Seyfert galaxies with standard diagnostic emission-line ratios. The spectral energy distribution (SED) of these ETGs would then lack nebular emission and be essentially composed of a…
We present a quantitative analysis of the SFH of 12 fields in the SMC. We find that there are four main periods of enhancement of star formation: a young one peaked at around 0.2-0.5 Gyr old, only present in the eastern and in the central-most fields; two at intermediate ages present in all fields (a conspicuous one peaked at 4-5 Gyr old, and a less significant one peaked at 1.5-2.5); and an old one, peaked at 10 Gyr in all fields but the western ones. In the western fields, this old enhancement splits into two, one peaked at around 8 Gyr old and another at around 12 Gyr old. This "two-enhance…
Computational chemistry is used here to determine the vibrational line spectrum of several candidate molecules. It is shown that the thiourea functional group, associated with various carbonaceous structures (mainly compact and linear aromatic clusters), is able to mimic the 21-$μ$m band emitted by a number of proto-planetary nebulae. The combination of nitrogen and sulphur in thiourea is the essential source of emission in this model: the band disappears if these species are replaced by carbon. The astronomical 21-$μ$m feature extends redward to merge with another prominent band peaking betwe…
This paper presents CCD multicolor photometry for 304 old star clusters in the nearby spiral galaxy M31. Of which photometry of 55 star clusters is first obtained. The observations were carried out as a part of the Beijing--Arizona--Taiwan--Connecticut (BATC) Multicolor Sky Survey from 1995 February to 2008 March, using 15 intermediate-band filters covering 3000--10000 Å. Detailed comparisons show that our photometry is in agreement with previous measurements. Based on the ages and metallicities from Caldwell et al. and the photometric measurements here, we estimated the clusters' masses by co…
We present optical photometry and spectroscopy of the Type Ia supernova SN2018cqj/ATLAS18qtd. The supernova exploded in an isolated region at $\sim 65$~kpc from the S0 galaxy IC~550 at $z=0.0165$ ($D\approx 74$~Mpc) and has a redshift consistent with a physical association to this galaxy. Multicolor photometry show that SN2018cqj/ATLAS18qtd is a low-luminosity ($M_{B_{max}}\approx -17.9$ mag), fast-declining Type Ia with color stretch $s_{BV} \approx 0.6$ and $B$-band decline rate $Δm_{15}(B) \approx 1.77$ mag. Two nebular-phase spectra obtained as part of the 100IAS survey at +193 and +307 da…
We study the chemical abundances of a wide sample of 142 Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) with good quality observations, for which the abundances have been derived more or less homogeneously, thus allowing a reasonable comparison with stellar models. The goal is the determination of mass, chemical composition and formation epoch of their progenitors, through comparison of the data with results from AGB evolution. The dust properties of PNe, when available, were also used to further support our interpretation. We find that the majority ($\sim60\%$) of the Galactic PNe studied has nearly solar …
Boxy/peanut bulges are considered to be part of the same stellar structure as bars and both could be linked through the buckling instability. The Milky Way is our closest example. The goal of this letter is determining if the mass assembly of the different components leaves an imprint in their stellar populations allowing to estimate the time of bar formation and its evolution. To this aim we use integral field spectroscopy to derive the stellar age distributions, SADs, along the bar and disc of NGC 6032. The analysis shows clearly different SADs for the different bar areas. There is an underl…
We provide an overview of Science Verification MUSE observations of NGC 2070, the central region of the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Integral-field spectroscopy of the central 2' x 2' region provides the first complete spectroscopic census of its massive star content, nebular conditions and kinematics. The star-formation surface density of NGC 2070 is reminiscent of the intense star-forming knots of high-redshift galaxies, with nebular conditions similar to low-redshift Green Pea galaxies, some of which are Lyman continuum leakers. Uniquely, MUSE permits the star-formation h…
Green Peas are a class of extreme star-forming galaxies at intermediate redshifts, originally discovered via color-selection using multi-filter, wide-field survey imaging data (Cardamone et al. 2009). They are commonly thought of as being analogs of high-redshift Ly$α$-emitting galaxies. The defining characteristic of Green Pea galaxies is a high-excitation nebular spectrum with very large equivalent width lines, leading to the recognition that Green Pea-like galaxies can also be identified in samples of emission-line galaxies. Here we compare the properties a sample of [O III]-selected star-f…
We present a new photometric catalog of 326 candidate globular clusters (GCs) in the nearby spiral galaxy M101, selected from B, V, and I Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys images. The luminosity function (LF) of these clusters has an unusually large number of faint sources compared with GCLFs in many other spiral galaxies. Accordingly, we separate and compare the properties of "bright" (M_V < -6.5) versus "faint" (M_V > -6.5; one magnitude fainter than the expected GC peak) clusters within our sample. The LF of the bright clusters is well fit by a peaked distribution similar t…
Spectral feature index diagrams with integrated globular clusters and simple stellar population models often show that some clusters have weak H beta, so weak that even the oldest models cannot match the observed feature depths. In this work, we rule out the possibility that abundance mixture effects are responsible for the weak indices unless such changes operate to cool the entire isochrone. We discuss this result in the context of other explanations, including horizontal branch morphology, blue straggler populations, and nebular or stellar emission fill-in, finding a preference for flaring …

In this work we characterise the properties of the object SDSS J020536.84-081424.7, an extended nebular region with projected extension of $14 \times 14$ kpc$^{2}$ in the line of sight of the ETG Mrk 1172, using unprecedented spectroscopic data from MUSE. We perform a spatially resolved stellar population synthesis and estimate the stellar mass for both Mrk 1172 ($1 \times 10^{11} M_{\odot}$) and our object of study ($3 \times 10^{9} M_{\odot}$). While the stellar content of Mrk 1172 is dominated by an old ($\sim 10$ Gyr) stellar population, the extended nebular emission has its light dominate…

Since thin disc stars are younger than thick disc stars on average, the thin disc is predicted by some models to start forming after the thick disc had formed, around 10 Gyr ago. Accordingly, no significant old thin disc population should exist. Using 6-D coordinates from Gaia-DR2 and age estimates from Sanders & Das (2018), we select $\sim 24000$ old stars (${τ> 10}$ Gyr, with uncertainties $\lesssim 15\%$) within 2 kpc from the Sun (full sample). A cross-match with APOGEE-DR16 ($\sim 1000$ stars) reveals comparable fractions of old chemically defined thin/thick disc stars. We show that the f…
Multi-epoch narrow-band HST images of the bipolar Hii region Sh2-106 reveal highly supersonic nebular proper motions which increase with projected distance from the massive young stellar object S106~IR, reaching over ~30 mas/year (~150 km/s at D=1.09 kpc) at a projected separation of ~1.4' (0.44 pc) from S106~IR. We propose that S106~IR experienced a $\sim10^{47}$ erg explosion ~3,500 years ago. The explosion may be the result of a major accretion burst, a recent encounter with another star, or a consequence of the interaction of a companion with the bloated photosphere of S106~IR as it grew f…
We investigate the origin of extragalactic continuum emission and its relation to the stellar population of a recently discovered peculiar z=3.344 Lyman alpha emitter. Based on an analysis of the broad-band colors and morphology we find further support for the idea that the underlying galaxy is being fed by a large-scale (L > 35 kpc) accretion stream. Archival HST images show small scale (~5 kpc) tentacular filaments converging near a hot-spot of star-formation, possibly fueled by gas falling in along the filaments. The spectral energy distribution of the tentacles is broadly compatible with e…
The nature of the sources powering nebular HeII emission in star-forming galaxies remains debated, and various types of objects have been considered, including Wolf-Rayet stars, X-ray binaries, and Population III stars. Modern X-ray observations show the ubiquitous presence of hot gas filling star-forming galaxies. We use a collisional ionization plasma code to compute the specific HeII ionizing flux produced by hot gas and show that if its temperature is not too high (less than 2.5 MK), then the observed levels of soft diffuse X-ray radiation could explain HeII ionization in galaxies. To gain…
We build a Spitzer IRAC complete catalog of objects, obtained by complementing the $K_\mathrm{s}$-band selected UltraVISTA catalog with objects detected in IRAC only. With the aim of identifying massive (i.e., $\log(M_*/M_\odot)>11$) galaxies at $4<z<7$, we consider the systematic effects on the measured photometric redshifts from the introduction of an old and dusty SED template and from the introduction of a bayesian prior taking into account the brightness of the objects, as well as the systematic effects from different star formation histories (SFHs) and from nebular emission lines in the …
We present the metallicity distribution of a sample of 471 RR Lyrae (RRL) stars in the Sculptor dSph, obtained from the $I$-band Period-Luminosity relation. It is the first time that the early chemical evolution of a dwarf galaxy is characterized in such a detailed and quantitative way, using photometric data alone. We find a broad metallicity distribution (FWHM=0.8 dex) that is peaked at [Fe/H]$\simeq$-1.90 dex, in excellent agreement with literature values obtained from spectroscopic data. Moreover, we are able to directly trace the metallicity gradient out to a radius of $\sim$55 arcmin. We…
We present high-quality VLT-FLAMES optical spectroscopy of the nebular gas in the giant star-forming region 30 Doradus. In this paper, the first of a series, we introduce our observations and discuss the main kinematic features of 30 Dor, as revealed by the spectroscopy of the ionized gas in the region. The primary data set consists of regular grid of nebular observations, which we used to produce a spectroscopic datacube of 30 Dor, centered on the massive star cluster R136 and covering a field-of-view of 10'x10'. The main emission lines present in the datacube are from Halpha and [NII]6548,65…
