Predictions for the global polarization of $Λ$ hyperons in Au+Au collisions at moderately relativistic collision energies, 2.4 $\leq\sqrt{s_{NN}}\leq$ 11 GeV, are made. These are based on the thermodynamic approach to the global polarization incorporated into the model of the three-fluid dynamics. Centrality dependence of the polarization is studied. It is predicted that the polarization reaches a maximum or a plateau (depending on the equation of state and centrality) at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}\approx$ 3 GeV. It is found that the global polarization increases with increasing width of the rapidity window around the midrapidity.
A key ingredient in any numerical study of supernova explosions is the nuclear network routine that is coupled with the hydrodynamic simulation code. When these studies are performed in more than one dimension, the size of the network is severely limited by computational issues. In this work, we propose a nuclear network, net87, which is close to one hundred nuclei and could be appropriate to simulate supernova explosions in multidimensional studies. One relevant feature is that electron and positron captures on free protons and neutrons have been incorporated to the network. Such addition all…
We use a correlated local Fermi gas (LFG) model, which accounts also for long distance corrections of the RPA type and final-state interactions, to compute the polarization of the final lepton in charged-current quasielastic neutrino scattering. The present model has been successfully used in recent studies of inclusive neutrino nucleus processes and muon capture. We investigate the relevance of nuclear effects in the particular case of $τ$ polarization in tau-neutrino induced reactions for several kinematics of relevance for neutrino oscillation experiments.
It is shown that polarization transfer measurements $(\vec{e},e'\vec{p})$ on a specific target nucleus can provide constraints on the ratio of the in-medium electric to magnetic form factor. Thereby one exploits the fact that proton knockout from single-particle levels exhibit a specific sensitivity to the effective nuclear density. It is shown that in $^{12}$C the effective nuclear density for $s$-shell knockout is about twice as high as for $p$-shell knockout. With current model predictions for the in-medium form factors, one obtains measurable modifications of the order of 5% in the ratios …
We present a calculation of the global polarization of Lambda hyperons in relativistic Au-Au collisions at RHIC Beam Energy Scan range sqrt{s}_NN = 7.7 - 200 GeV with a 3+1 dimensional cascade + viscous hydro + cascade model, UrQMD+vHLLE. Within this model, the mean polarization of Lambda in the out-of-plane direction is predicted to decrease rapidly with collision energy from a top value of about 2% at the lowest energy examined. We explore the connection between the polarization signal and thermal vorticity and estimate the feed-down contribution to Lambda polarization due to the decay of hi…
We illustrate how nuclear polarization corrections in muonic atoms can be formally connected to inelastic response functions of a nucleus. We first discuss the point-nucleon approximation and then include finite-nucleon-size corrections. As an example, we compare our ab-initio calculation of the third Zemach moment in the muonic Helium-4 ion to previous phenomenological results.
We calculate nuclear-polarization energy shifts for hydrogenlike $^{208}_{~82}$Pb$^{81+}$. A retarded transverse part as well as the Coulomb part is taken into account as the electromagnetic interaction between an electron and the nucleus. With a finite charge distribution for the nuclear ground state and the random-phase approximation to describe the nuclear excitations, we obtain nuclear polarization energy of the $1s_{1/2}$ state as --38.2 (--37.0) meV in the Feynman (Coulomb) gauge. For the $2s_{1/2}$, $2p_{1/2}$ and $2p_{3/2}$ states, they are --6.7 (--6.4), --0.2 (--0.2) and +0.0 (+0.0) …
We predict the polarization of Lambda and antiLambda hyperons in peripheral heavy ion collisions at ultrarelativistic energy, based on the assumption of local thermodynamical equilibrium at freeze-out. The polarization vector is proportional to the curl of the inverse temperature four-vector field and its length, of the order of percents, is maximal for particle with moderately high momentum lying on the reaction plane. A selective measurement of these particles could make Lambda polarization detectable.
Stimulated by the proton radius conundrum, measurements of the Lamb shift in various light muonic atoms are planned at PSI. The aim is to extract the rms charge radius with high precision, limited by the uncertainty in the nuclear polarization corrections. We present an ab-initio calculation of the nuclear polarization for mu-4He+ leading to an energy correction in the 2S-2P transitions of $δ_{pol}=-2.47$ meV $\pm$ 6%. We use two different state-of-the-art nuclear Hamiltonians and utilize the Lorentz integral transform with hyperspherical harmonics expansion as few-body methods. We take into a…
In heavy atoms and ions, nuclear structure effects are significantly enhanced due to the overlap of the electron wave functions with the nucleus. This overlap rapidly increases with the nuclear charge $Z$. We study the energy level shifts induced by the electric dipole and electric quadrupole nuclear polarization effects in atoms and ions with $Z \geq 20$. The electric dipole polarization effect is enhanced by the nuclear giant dipole resonance. The electric quadrupole polarization effect is enhanced because the electrons in a heavy atom or ion move faster than the rotation of the deformed nuc…
There exist several effective interactions whose parameters are fitted to force mean field predictions to reproduce experimental findings of finite nuclei and calculated properties of infinite nuclear matter. Exploiting this tecnique one can give a good description of nuclear binding energies. We present evidence that further progress can be made by taking into account medium polarization effects associated with surface and pairing vibrations.
Effects of the Fermi-sea polarization on the superfluidity in nuclear matter are studied in a framework of quantum hadrodynamics. The particle-hole polarization due to $σ$ and $ω$ mesons enhances the peak value of the pairing gap contrary to the previous non-relativistic studies.
The influence of the core polarization on the effective nuclear interaction of asymmetric nuclear matter is calculated in the framework of the induced interaction theory. The strong isospin dependence of the density and spin density fluctuations is studied along with the interplay between the neutron and proton core polarizations. Moving from symmetric nuclear matter to pure neutron matter the crossover of the induced interaction from attractive to repulsive in the spin singlet state is determined as a function of the isospin imbalance. The density range in which it occurs is also determined. F…
Nuclear polarization corrections to the 2P-2S Lamb shift in mu-d atoms are developed in order alpha^5 and are shown to agree with a recent calculation. The nuclear physics in the resulting corrections is then evaluated in zero-range approximation. The dominant part of the correction is very simple in form and differs from a recent potential model calculation by less than 1%. It is also demonstrated how the third-Zemach-moment contribution largely cancels against part of the polarization correction, as it did in e-d atoms and does so exactly for point-like nucleons. This suggests that it may be…
The importance of core contributions to the anapole moment in nuclei is examined. A model of the core-polarization correction is presented. The model is based on the coupling of the valence particles to the spin-dipole $J=1^{-}$ giant resonances of the core. A shell-model calculation of this correction is presented. The single-particle moments are calculated with Woods-Saxon and Skyrme Hartree Fock radial wave functions, and the general issues associated with nuclear configuration mixing are discussed.
Schiff moments were calculated for a set of nuclei with full account of core polarization effects. A finite range P and T violating weak nucleon-nucleon interaction has been used in the calculations. While in the absence of core polarization the Schiff moment depends on one combination of the weak interaction constants, in the presence of core polarization the Schiff moment depends on all three constants separately. The dominant contribution comes from isovector, $ΔT=1$, part of the weak interaction. The effects of core polarization were found to have in general a large effect on the Schiff mo…
In the calculation of the $K^+$-nucleus cross sections, the coupling of the mesons exchanged between the $K^+$ and the target nucleons to the polarization of the Fermi sea has been taken into account. This polarization has been calculated in the one-loop approximation but summed up to all orders (RPA-type calculation). This effect is found to be rather important but does not improve the agreement with experiment.
The nuclear-polarization (NP) energies with the collective model commonly employed in the NP calculations for hydrogenlike heavy ions are found to have serious gauge violations when the ladder and cross diagrams only are taken into account. Using the equivalence of charge-current density with a schematic microscopic model, the NP energy shifts with the collective model are gauge invariantly evaluated for the $1s_{1/2}$ states in $^{208}_{~82}$Pb$^{81+}$ and $^{238}_{~92}$U$^{91+}$.
