We develop the approach to the problem of neutrino oscillations in a magnetic field introduced in \cite{Popov:2019nkr} and extend it to the case of three neutrino generations. The theoretical framework suitable for computation of the Dirac neutrino spin, flavour and spin-flavour oscillations probabilities in a magnetic field is given. It is shown that there is an entanglement between neutrino flavour and spin oscillations and in the general case it is not possible to consider these two types of neutrino oscillations separately. The closed analytic expressions for the probabilities of oscillations are obtained accounting for the normal and inverted hierarchies and the possible effect of CP violation. In particular, it is shown that the probabilities of the conversions without neutrino flavor change, i.e. $ν_e^L \rightarrow ν_e^L$ and $ν_e^L \rightarrow ν_e^R$, do not exhibit the dependence on the CP phase, while the other neutrino conversions are affected by the CP phase. In general, the neutrino oscillation probabilities exhibit quite a complicated interplay of oscillations on the magnetic $μ_ν B$ and vacuum frequencies. The obtained results are of interest in applications to neutrino oscillations under the influence of extreme astrophysical environments, for example peculiar to magnetars and supernovas, as well as in studying neutrino propagation in interstellar magnetic fields.
If neutrinos are massive, `lepton flavour eigenstates' are absent from the amplitudes of all Standard Model processes. Measurements of $Γ(π\to e ν)/Γ(π\to μν)$ and of the MNS matrix are shown to exclude the existence of such states. Incoherent production of neutrinos of different flavour modifies the usual oscillation phase derived assuming production of a lepton flavour eigenstate. The new prediction can be tested in long line-base experiments by comparison of `$ν_μ$ disappearance' of neutrinos from pion and kaon decay.
The definition of `lepton flavour eigenstates' introduced in a recent paper hep-ph/0302045 is in disagreement with the Standard Model prediction for the structure of the leptonic charged current and implies the absence of neutrino oscillations following pion decay, in contradiction to experimental data
We further develop a recently proposed new approach to the description of the relativistic neutrino flavour $ν_e^L \leftrightarrow ν_μ^L$, spin $ν_e^L \leftrightarrow ν_{e}^R$ and spin-flavour $ν_e^L \leftrightarrow ν_μ^R$ oscillations in a constant magnetic field that is based on the use of the exact neutrino stationary states in the magnetic field. The neutrino flavour, spin and spin-flavour oscillations probabilities are calculated accounting for the whole set of possible conversions between four neutrino states. In general, the obtained expressions for the neutrino oscillations probabiliti…
This paper is addressed to the proof of the important role of measuring apparatus, i.e. the measuring process, in the formation of necessary and sufficient conditions for the explanation of a time modulation of K-shell electron capture (EC) decay rates of hydrogen-like (H-like) heavy ions (or the GSI oscillations) as the interference of neutrino mass-eigenstates of the electron neutrino constituents. For our analysis we use a toy-model, which has been recently proposed by Peshkin arXiv: 1403.4292 [nucl-th] for a verification of the mechanism of the GSI oscillations as the interference of neutr…
We present and prove a theorem of matrix analysis, the Flavour Expansion Theorem (or FET), according to which, an analytic function of a Hermitian matrix can be expanded polynomially in terms of its off-diagonal elements with coefficients being the divided differences of the analytic function and arguments the diagonal elements of the Hermitian matrix. The theorem is applicable in case of flavour changing amplitudes. At one-loop level this procedure is particularly natural due to the observation that every loop function in the Passarino-Veltman basis can be recursively expressed in terms of di…

In the extended Standard Model of particle physics, each neutrino mass eigenstate is predicted to have a tiny but non vanishing magnetic moment induced by quantum field theoretic corrections. These QFT-induced magnetic momenta depend linearly on masses of the underlying mass eigenstates with a proportionality constant ${3eG_{F}}/{(8\sqrt{2}π^{2})} $. As a consequence when neutrinos are embedded in an environment containing magnetic fields the flavour oscillations get a contribution from the induced relative phases.
When lepton flavour effects in thermal leptogenesis are active, they introduce important differences with respect to the case in which they are neglected, the so-called one-flavour approximation. We investigate analytically and numerically the transition from the one-flavour to the two-flavour case when the $τ$-lepton flavour becomes distinguishable from the other two flavours. We study the impact of the oscillations of the asymmetries in lepton flavour space on the final lepton asymmetries, for the hierarchical right-handed neutrino mass spectrum. Flavour oscillations project the lepton state…
We propose the new mechanism of neutrino flavour relaxation to explain the experimentally observed changes of initial neutrino flavour fluxes. The test of neutrino relaxation hypothesis is presented, using the data of modern reactor, solar and accelerator experiments. The final choice between the standard neutrino oscillations and the proposed neutrino flavour relaxation model can be done in future experiments.
Studies of an interesting effect of neutrino spin and spin-flavour oscillations engenders by neutrino weak interactions with the transversally moving or polarized matter are reviewed.
Neutral mesons exhibit a phenomenon called flavour mixing. As a consequence of a second order weak process the flavour eigenstates corresponding to the meson and its anti-meson are superpositions of two mass eigenstates. A meson produced in a flavour state changes into an anti-meson and back again as a function of time. Such flavour oscillations are considered sensitive probes of physics beyond the Standard Model. In this brief review I summarize the status of experimental constraints on mixing parameters in the B_s meson system.
A simple model of the neutrino mixing is considered, which contains only one right-handed neutrino field, coupled via the mass term to the three usual left-handed fields. This is a simplest model that allows for three-flavour neutrino oscillations. The existing experimental limits on the neutrino oscillations are used to obtain constraints on the two free mixing parameters of the model. A specific sum rule relating the oscillation probabilities of different flavours is derived.
After a brief history of two known types of neutrino mixing and oscillations, including neutrino spin and spin-flavour oscillations in the transversal magnetic field, we perform systematic study of a new phenomenon of neutrino spin and spin-flavour oscillations engendered by the transversal matter currents on the bases of the developed quantum treatment of the phenomenon. Possibilities for the resonance amplification of these new types of oscillations by the longitudinal matter currents and longitudinal magnetic fields are analyzed. Neutrino spin-flavour oscillations engendered by the transver…
Some theoretical aspects of 3-flavour (3f) neutrino oscillations are reviewed. These include: general properties of 3f oscillation probabilities; matter effects in ν_μ\leftrightarrow ν_τoscillations; 3f effects in oscillations of solar, atmospheric, reactor and supernova neutrinos and in accelerator long-baseline experiments; CP and T violation in neutrino oscillations in vacuum and in matter, and the problem of U_{e3}.
We demonstrate the usefulness of flavour neutrino masses expressed in terms of $M_{ee},M_{eμ}$ and $M_{eτ}$. The analytical expressions for the flavour neutrino masses, mass eigenstates and physical CP-violating Majorana phases for texture two zeros are obtained exactly.
Rapid progress has been made during recent years in the understanding of the flavour oscillations that occur as neutrinos traverse through supernova. The previous paradigm has given way and it is now clear that the neutrino signals we shall receive from future Galactic supernovae will allow us both to peer inside these extraordinary cosmic events and to probe some of the fundamental properties of these elusive particles. In this review we aim to distill the progress that has been made focusing upon the effects of the dynamic density profile and the emergence of collective flavour oscillations …
The measurement of the charged-current 8B solar neutrino reaction on deuterium at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory confirms the neutrino oscillation hypothesis for the solar neutrino problem, and the result favours the solution with large neutrino mixing angles. We demonstrate that the current neutrino oscillation data (including atmospheric and reactor neutrinos) are sufficient to construct the lepton flavour mixing matrix with a reasonable accuracy. We also infer the maximum size of CP violation effects consistent with the current neutrino oscillation experiments.
Non-standard neutrino interactions (NSIs), the sub-leading effects in the flavour transitions of neutrinos, play a crucial role in the determination of the various unknowns in neutrino oscillations, such as neutrino mass hierarchy, Dirac CP violating phase and the octant of atmospheric mixing angle. In this work, we focus on the possible implications of lepton flavour violating (LFV) NSIs, which generally affect the neutrino propagation, on the determination of the these unknown oscillation parameters. We study the effect of these NSIs on the physics potential of the currently running and upco…
We discuss neutrino oscillations in the framework of the quantum field theory without introducing the concept of neutrino weak eigenstates. The external particles are described by wave packets and the different mass eigenstate neutrinos propagate between the production and detection interactions, which are macroscopically localized in space-time. The time-averaged cross section, which is the measurable quantity in the usual experimental setting, is calculated. It is shown that only in the extremely relativistic limit the usual quantum mechanical oscillation probability can be factored out of t…
The recent measurement of Delta_{sol} by the KamLAND experiment with very small errors, makes definitive predictions for the energy dependence of the solar neutrino survival probability P_{ee}. We fix Delta_{sol} to be the KamLAND best fit value of 8*10^{-5} eV^2 and study the energy dependence of P_{ee} for solar neutrinos in the framework of two flavour oscillations and also of three flavour oscillations. For the case of two flavour oscillations, P_{ee} has a measurable slope in the 5-8 MeV range but the solar spectrum measurements in this range find P_{ee} to be flat. The predicted values o…
A short overview of neutrino electromagnetic properties with focus on existed experimental constraints and future prospects is presented. The related new effect in neutrino flavour and spin-flavour oscillations in the transversal matter currents is introduced.
I review some theoretical aspects of neutrino oscillations in the case when more than two neutrino flavours are involved. These include: approximate analytic solutions for 3-flavour (3f) oscillations in matter; matter effects in nu_mu - nu_tau oscillations; 3f effects in oscillations of solar, atmospheric, reactor and supernova neutrinos and in accelerator long-baseline experiments; CP and T violation in neutrino oscillations in vacuum and in matter; the problem of U_{e3}; 4f oscillations.
We perform a three flavour analysis of the atmospheric, accelerator and reactor neutrino data from the Kamiokande, LSND and Bugey experiments respectively. Choosing the values of ${Δ{m}}^2$ obtained from two flavour fits of the first two experiments, the allowed ranges of the three generation mixing angles are determined. The accelerator experiments CHORUS and NOMAD are found to be most sensitive to regions of the allowed parameter space which correspond to genuine three generation solutions for the atmospheric neutrino anomaly.
With one Δm^2 of the appropriate order of magnitude to solve the atmospheric neutrino problem, we study the resulting three-generation vacuum-oscillation fit to the solar neutrino flux. An explanation of the atmospheric neutrino composition in terms of pure ν_μ\to ν_τoscillations is easily compatible with the well-known two-flavour oscillation solution for solar neutrinos. The allowed parameter region in the \sin^2(2θ_{12})--Δm^2 plane changes little with increasing values of the mixing element U_{e3}, provided this is less than about 0.4. We find that the threefold maximal mixing is disfavour…
We analyze both chirality-changing and chirality-preserving transitions of Dirac-Majorana neutrinos. In vacuum, the first ones are suppressed with respect to the others due to helicity conservation and the interactions with a (``normal'') medium practically does not affect the expressions of the probabilities for these transitions, even if the amplitudes of oscillations slightly change. For usual situations involving relativistic neutrinos we find no resonant enhancement for all flavour-conserving transitions. However, for very light neutrinos propagating in superdense media, the pattern of os…
The neutrino signal from SN1987A is analysed with respect to spin-flavour oscillations between electron antineutrinos, $\barν_{e}$, and muon neutrinos, $ν_μ$, by means of a maximum likelihood analysis. Following Jegerlehner et al. best fit values for the total energy released in neutrinos, $E_t$, and the temperature of the electron antineutrino, $T_{\barν_{e}}$, for a range of mixing parameters and progenitor models are calculated. In particular the dependence of the inferred quantities on the metallicity of the supernova is investigated and the uncertainties involved in using the neutrino sig…
Neutrinos and antineutrinos of all three flavours are emitted during the post bounce phase of a core collapse supernova with $\numu/\nutau (\anumu/\anutau)$ having average energies more than that of $\nue(\anue)$. They can be detected by the new earth bound detector like SNO and Super-Kamiokande which are sensitive to neutrinos of all three flavours. In this letter we consider the effect of flavour oscillations on the neutrino flux and their expected number of events at the detector. We do a three-generation analysis and for the mass and mixing schemes we first consider the threefold maximal m…
We show how a mass mixing matrix can be generated dynamically, for two massless fermion flavours coupled to a Lorentz invariance violating (LIV) gauge field. The LIV features play the role of a regulator for the gap equations, and the non-analytic dependence of the dynamical masses, as functions of the gauge coupling, allows to consider the limit where the LIV gauge field eventually decouples from the fermions. Lorentz invariance is then recovered, to describe the oscillation between two free fermion flavours, and we check that the finite dynamical masses are the only effects of the original L…
We analyze neutrino oscillation for the general case when the initial neutrino is not in a pure flavor state. We show that, after such a neutrino beam propagates for a while, the probability of detecting any pure flavor state depends even on the CP-violating Majorana phases in the mixing matrix. The dependence remains even when energy spectrum of the initial beam is taken into account. We discuss various implications of this dependence.
Neutrino oscillations occur due to non-zero masses and mixings and most importantly they are believed to maintain quantum coherence even over astrophysical length scales. In the present study, we explore the quantumness of three flavour neutrino oscillations by studying the extent of violation of Leggett-Garg inequalities (LGI) if non-standard interactions are taken into account. We report an enhancement in violation of LGI with respect to the standard scenario for appropriate choice of NSI parameters.
A recent numerical study by A. D. Dolgov, S. H. Hansen, S. Pastor, S. T. Petcov, G. G. Raffelt, and D. V. Semikoz (DHPPRS) [hep-ph/0201287] found that complete or partial equilibrium between all active neutrino flavours can be achieved before the big bang nucleosynthesis epoch via flavour oscillations, if the oscillation parameters are those inferred from the atmospheric and solar neutrino data, and, in some cases, if $θ_{13}$ is also sizeable. As such, cosmological constraints on the electron neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry are now applicable in all three neutrino sectors. In the present work…
The Lorentz invariant formalism for description of neutrino flavor oscillation in moving and polarized matter is developed. It is shown that the neutrino effective potential, which determines the effective mass difference between neutrinos in matter can be sufficiently changed by relativistic motion of matter. In the case of matter motion parallel to neutrino propagation, matter effects in neutrino flavor oscillations are suppressed. In the case of relativistic motion of matter in the opposite direction sufficient increase of effects of matter in neutrino oscillations is predicted. The depende…
We also consider modifications of the oscillation probabiliti…
Due to notoriously small value of the neutrino magnetic moment, the phenomena of neutrino spin flavour precession (SFP) requires very high magnetic field. This makes only a handful of systems suitable to study this phenomena. By the observation of SFP, the Dirac and Majorana nature of neutrinos is expected to be distinguished. In this work, we point out the potential of white dwarf (WD) system in studying the spin-flavour oscillation of neutrinos. From recent analysis, it has been found that young isolated WDs may harbor very strong internal magnetic field, even without exhibiting any surface …
The theory pioneered by Blasone and Vitiello describes massive neutrinos as generalized coherent flavor eigenstates within the extended Standard Model. In this paper, we compute the neutron beta decay spectrum for the Blasone-Vitiello theory in a model with two neutrinos. For relativistic neutrinos, the obtained spectrum is in agreement with the Standard Model. However, there are discrepancies when the kinetic energy of the electron is close to the end point energy. The possibility of measuring the discrepancies in future experiments is discussed.
We describe a loopwise perturbative truncation scheme for quantum transport equations in the Kadanoff-Baym formalism, which does not necessitate the use of the so-called Kadanoff-Baym or quasi-particle ansaetze for dressed propagators. This truncation scheme is used to study flavour effects in the context of Resonant Leptogenesis (RL), showing explicitly that, in the weakly-resonant regime, there exist two distinct and pertinent flavour effects in the heavy-neutrino sector: (i) the resonant mixing and (ii) the oscillations between different heavy-neutrino flavours. Moreover, we illustrate that…
The atmospheric neutrino anomaly reported by the super-Kamiokande collaboration suggests existence of a large flavour violating Yukawa coupling in the lepton sector. We discuss lepton-flavour violation at low energies in the framework of the supersymmetric SU(5)_{GUT} model with right-handed neutrinos. We find that for a wide range of parameter space suggested from the atmospheric neutrino anomaly, if the tau-neutrino Yukawa coupling is as large as that of top quark, lower bounds of the branching ratios of mu -> e gamma, tau -> mu gamma, and the mu-e conversion rate on $^{48}_{22}Ti$ become ar…
We discuss two theoretical motivations of precision measurements of oscillation parameters. One is the guidance for flavour model building with flavour symmetries, and the other is the connection with the origin of matter-antimatter asymmetry. We also present our recent progress in these aspects, a new approach of flavour model building based on cross coupling in the flavon potential and a novel mechanism of leptogenesis via phase transition.
Motivated by neutrino astronomy, we consider a plane wave of coupled and massive flavours, scattered by a static black hole, and describe analytically and numerically the corresponding oscillation probability in the surrounding space. Both the interpretation as particles travelling along geodesics and as scattered waves are studied, and consistently show a non-trivial and potentially long range interference pattern, in contrast to the spatially uniform transition probability in a flat spacetime. We introduce a numerical method for studying the oscillations around black holes, which accounts fo…
In fermion mixing phenomenology, the matrix of moduli squared, P=(|U|^2), is well-known to carry essentially the same information as the complex mixing matrix U itself, but with the advantage of being phase-convention independent. The matrix K (analogous to the Jarlskog CP-invariant J) formed from the real parts of the mixing matrix "plaquette" products is similarly invariant. In this paper, the P and K matrices are shown to be entirely equivalent, both being directly related (in the leptonic case) to the observable, locally L/E-averaged transition probabilities in neutrino oscillations. We st…
We consider analytically the domain of the three mixing angles $Θ_{ij}$ and the CP phase $δ$ for three flavour neutrino oscillations both in vacuum and matter. Similarly to the quark sector, it is necessary and sufficient to let all the mixing angles $Θ_{12},Θ_{13},Θ_{23}$ and $δ$ be in the range $<0,\fracπ{2}>$ and $0 \leq δ< 2 π$, respectively. To exploit the full range of $δ$ will be important in future when more precise fits are possible, even without CP violation measurements. With the above assumption on the angles we can restrict ourselves to the natural order of masses $m_1<m_2<m_3$. C…
Comment on "Neutrino oscillations originate from virtual excitation of $Z$ bosons" and "Neutrinos produced from $β$ decays of neutrons cannot be in coherent superpositions of different mass eigenstates"
We introduce new Lorentz-symmetry violating kinematics for a four-fermion interaction model, where dynamical mass generation is allowed, irrespectively of the strength of the coupling. In addition, these kinematics lead to a quasi-relativistic dispersion relation, in the sense that it is relativistic in both the infrared and the ultraviolet, but not in an intermediate regime, characterized by the mass $M$. For two fermions, we show that a flavour-mixing mass matrix is generated dynamically, and the Lorentz symmetric limit $M\to\infty$ leads to two free relativistic fermions, with flavour oscil…
We study the effects of violation of the equivalence principle (VEP) or violation of Lorentz invariance (LIV) in the neutrino sector on the asymmetry between T-conjugate oscillation probabilities, $ΔP_T \equiv P(ν_α \to ν_β) - P(ν_β \to ν_α)$, in a three-flavour framework. We find that additional mixing due to these mechanisms, while obeying all present bounds, can lead to an observable enhancement, suppression, and/or sign change in $ΔP_T$ for the preferred energies and baselines of a neutrino factory. The measurement of this asymmetry can be used to establish a new upper limit of order $10^{…
If the three types of active neutrinos possess different maximum attainable velocities and the neutrino eigenstates in the velocity basis are different from those in the flavour (and mass) basis then this will induce a flavour oscillation in addition to the normal mass flavour oscillation. Here we study such an oscillation scenario in three neutrino framework including also the matter effect and apply our results to demonstrate its consequences for long baseline neutrinos. We also predict the possible signatures in terms of yields in a possible long baseline neutrino experiment.
In the early universe, neutrinos are slightly coupled when electron-positron pairs annihilate transferring their entropy to photons. This process originates non-thermal distortions on the neutrino spectra which depend on neutrino flavour, larger for nu_e than for nu_mu or nu_tau. We study the effect of three-neutrino flavour oscillations on the process of neutrino decoupling by solving the momentum-dependent kinetic equations for the neutrino spectra. We find that oscillations do not essentially modify the total change in the neutrino energy density, giving N_eff=3.046 in terms of the effectiv…
In the standard treatment of particle oscillations the mass eigenstates are implicitly assumed to be scalars and, consequently, the spinorial form of neutrino wave functions is not included in the calculations. To analyze this additional effect, we discuss the oscillation probability formula obtained by using the Dirac equation as evolution equation for the neutrino mass eigenstates. The initial localization of the spinor state also implies an interference between positive and negative energy components of mass eigenstate wave packets which modifies the standard oscillation probability.
We suggest a minimal extension of the simplest A4 flavour model that can induce a nonzero theta13 value, as required by recent neutrino oscillation data from reactors and accelerators. The predicted correlation between the atmospheric mixing angle theta23 and the magnitude of theta13 leads to an allowed region substantially smaller than indicated by neutrino oscillation global fits. Moreover, the scheme correlates CP violation in neutrino oscillations with the octant of the atmospheric mixing parameter theta23 in such a way that, for example, maximal mixing necessarily violates CP. We briefly …
A simple theory of supersymmetric dark matter (DM) naturally linked to neutrino flavour physics is studied. The DM sector comprises a spectrum of mixed lhd-rhd sneutrino states where both the sneutrino flavour structure and mass splittings are determined by the associated neutrino masses and mixings. Prospects for indirect detection from solar capture are good due to a large sneutrino-nucleon cross-section afforded by the inelastic splitting (solar capture limits exclude an explanation of DAMA/LIBRA). We find parameter regions where all heavier states will have decayed, leaving only one flavou…
We propose a Standard Model extension with underlying A4 flavour symmetry where small Dirac neutrino masses arise from a Type-II seesaw mechanism. The model predicts the "golden" flavour-dependent bottom-tau mass relation, requires an inverted neutrino mass ordering and non-maximal atmospheric mixing angle. Using the latest neutrino oscillation global fit we derive restrictions on the oscillation parameters, such as a correlation between Dirac CP phase and the lightest neutrino mass.
In this addendum to arXiv:1103.0734 we consider the recent results from long-baseline $ν_μ\toν_e$ searches at the T2K and MINOS experiments and investigate their implications for the mixing angle $θ_{13}$ and the leptonic Dirac CP phase $δ$. By combining the $2.5σ$ indication for a non-zero value of $θ_{13}$ coming from T2K data with global neutrino oscillation data we obtain a significance for $θ_{13} > 0$ of about $3σ$ with best fit points $\sin^2θ_{13} = 0.013(0.016)$ for normal (inverted) neutrino mass ordering. These results depend somewhat on assumptions concerning the analysis of reacto…
Two particle vacuum transitions (oscillations) are studied in the general case. We found that: 1) a nondiagonal mass term characterising oscillations is the width of two particle transitions into each other (this width can be computed by the standard method); 2) two types of oscillations take place: real and virtual. Solution of the problem of origin of mixing angle in the theory of vacuum oscillations is given. It is shown that neutral K meson and neutrino oscillations must proceed via two stages. First, neutral K^{o}, antineutral K-eigenstates of strong interaction (or nu(e), nu(mu), nu(tau)…
We demonstrate a method to systematically obtain eigenvalues and eigenstates of a many-body Hamiltonian describing collective neutrino oscillations. The method is derived from the Richardson-Gaudin framework, which involves casting the eigenproblem as a set of coupled nonlinear "Bethe Ansatz equations", the solutions of which can then be used to parametrize the eigenvalues and eigenvectors. The specific approach outlined in this paper consists of defining auxiliary variables that are related to the Bethe-Ansatz parameters, thereby transforming the Bethe-Ansatz equations into a different set of…
After a short introduction to the history of neutrino mixing and oscillations, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first analytical expression for the neutrino evolution probability obtained by Gribov and Pontecorvo in 1969 by the discussion of two new phenomena in neutrino oscillations: 1) the emergence of the neutrino spin and spin-flavour oscillations engendered by the transversal in respect to neutrino propagation matter currents, and 2) an inherent interplay of neutrino oscillations on the vacuum $ω_{vac}=\frac{Δm^2}{4p}$ and magnetic $ω_{B}=μB_{\perp}$ frequencies in the case of neu…
