The spin chirality, created by magnetic atoms, has been comprehensively understood to generate and control the magneto-optical effects. In comparison, the role of the crystal chirality that relates to nonmagnetic atoms has received much less attention. Here, we theoretically discover the crystal chirality magneto-optical (CCMO) effects, which depend on the chirality of crystal structures that originates from the rearrangement of nonmagnetic atoms. We show that the CCMO effects exist in many collinear antiferromagnets, such as RuO$_{2}$ and CoNb$_{3}$S$_{6}$, which has a local and global crystal chirality, respectively. The key character of the CCMO effects is the sign change if the crystal chirality reverses. The magnitudes of the CCMO spectra can be effectively manipulated by reorienting the Néel vector with the help of an external electric field, and the spectral integrals are found to be proportional to magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy.
We show that interlayer spins play a dual role in the Cairo pentagonal magnet Bi$_4$Fe$_5$O$_{13}$F, on one hand mediating the three-dimensional (3D) magnetic order and on the other driving spin-reorientation transitions both within and between the planes. The corresponding sequence of magnetic orders unraveled by neutron diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy features two orthogonal magnetic structures described by opposite local vector chiralities, and an intermediate, partly disordered phase with nearly collinear spins. A similar collinear phase has been predicted theoretically to be stabil…
Electrical detection of the 180 deg spin reversal, which is the basis of the operation of ferromagnetic memories, is among the outstanding challenges in the research of antiferromagnetic spintronics. Analogous effects to the ferromagnetic giant or tunneling magnetoresistance have not yet been realized in antiferromagnetic multilayers. Anomalous Hall effect (AHE), which has been recently employed for spin reversal detection in non-collinear antiferromagnets, is limited to materials that crystalize in ferromagnetic symmetry groups. Here we demonstrate electrical detection of the 180 deg Néel vec…
Taking the non-collinear antiferromagnetic hexagonal Heusler compound Mn$_3$Ge as a reference system, the contributions to linear response phenomena arising solely from the chiral coplanar and non-coplanar spin configurations are investigated. Orbital moments, X-ray absorption, anomalous and spin Hall effects, as well as corresponding spin-orbit torques and Edelstein polarizations are studied depending on a continuous variation of the polar angle relative to the Kagome planes of corner-sharing triangles between the non-collinear antiferromagnetic and the ferromagnetic limits. By scaling the sp…
Collinear and canted magnetic motifs in haematite were investigated by Kokubun et al. (2008) using x-ray Bragg diffraction magnified at the iron K-edge, and analyses of observations led to various potentially interesting conclusions. We demonstrate that the reported analyses for both non-resonant and resonant magnetic diffraction at low energies near the absorption K-edge are not appropriate. In its place, we apply a radically different formulation, thoroughly tried and tested, that incorporates all magnetic contributions to resonant x-ray diffraction allowed by the established chemical and ma…
We report the observation of a large anisotropic topological Hall effect (THE) in the hexagonal non-collinear magnet Fe5Sn3 single crystals. It is found that the sign of the topological Hall resistivity is negative when a magnetic field H perpendicular to the bc-plane (H\perp bc-plane), however, it changes form negative to positive when H parallel to the c-axis (H\parallel c-axis). The value of topological Hall resistivity increased with the increasing temperature and reached approximately -2.12 μΩcm (H\perp bc-plane) and 0.5 μΩcm (H\parallel c-axis) at 350 K, respectively. Quantitative analys…
Chiral matter has a structure that lacks inversion, mirror, and rotoreflection symmetry; thus, a given chiral material has either a right- or left-handed structure. In chiral matter, electricity and magnetism can be coupled in an exotic manner beyond the classical electromagnetism (e.g., magneto chiral effect in chiral magnets). In this paper, we give a firm experimental proof of the linear electric-current-induced magnetization effect in bulk nonmagnetic chiral matter elemental trigonal tellurium. We measured a $^{125} $Te nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectral shift under a pulsed electri…
In a collinear antiferromagnet with easy-axis anisotropy, symmetry guarantees that the spin wave modes are doubly degenerate. The two modes carry opposite spin angular momentum and exhibit opposite chirality. Using a honeycomb antiferromagnet in the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, we show that a longitudinal temperature gradient can drive the two modes to opposite transverse directions, realizing a spin Nernst effect of magnons with vanishing thermal Hall current. We find that magnons around the Γ-point and the K-point contribute oppositely to the transverse spin transport, …

We resolve the domain-wall structure of the model antiferromagnet $\text{Cr}_2\text{O}_3$ using nanoscale scanning diamond magnetometry and second-harmonic-generation microscopy. We find that the 180$^\circ$ domain walls are predominantly Bloch-like, and can co-exist with Néel walls in crystals with significant in-plane anisotropy. In the latter case, Néel walls that run perpendicular to a magnetic easy axis acquire a well-defined chirality. We further report quantitative measurement of the domain-wall width and surface magnetization. Our results provide fundamental input and an experimental m…
Recent advances in the understanding of spin orbital effects in ultrathin magnetic heterostructures have opened new paradigms to control magnetic moments electrically. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is said to play a key role in forming a Neel-type domain wall that can be driven by the spin Hall torque, a torque resulting from the spin current generated in a neighboring non-magnetic layer via the spin Hall effect. Here we show that the strength and sign of the DMI can be changed by modifying the adjacent heavy metal underlayer (X) in perpendicularly magnetized X|CoFeB|MgO heterstr…
Twisting in bilayers introduces structural chirality with two enantiomers, i.e., left- and right-hand bilayers, depending on the oriented twist angle. The interplay between this global chirality and additional degrees of freedom, such as magnetic ordering and the local octahedral chirality arising from the geometry of the bonds, can yield striking phenomena. In this work, we focus on collinear antiferromagnetic CrI$_3$ twisted homo-bilayers, which are characterized by a staggered octahedral chirality in each monolayer. Using symmetry analysis, density functional theory and tight-binding model …
The second-order magneto-optical effects, represented by Voigt and Schäfer-Hubert effects, are effective methods to detect the spin textures in antiferromagnets, whereas the previous studies are usually limited to collinear antiferromagnets. In noncollinear antiferromagnets, the spin textures characterized by spin chirality have been revealed to play a critical role in many exciting physics. In particular, the first-order topological magneto-optical effects originated from scalar spin chirality have been discovered recently. In this work, using the first-principles calculations and group theor…
Non-collinear antiferromagnets exhibits richer magneto-transport properties due to the topologically nontrivial spin structure they possess compared to conventional nonmagnetic materials, which allows us to manipulate the charge-spin conversion more freely by taking advantage of the chirality. In this work, we explore the unconventional spin orbit torque of L1$_2$-ordered Mn$_3$Pt with a triangular spin structure. We observed an unconventional spin orbit torque along the $\mathbf{x}$-direction for the (001)-oriented L1$_2$ Mn$_3$Pt, and found that it has a unique sign reversal behavior relativ…
Non-collinear antiferromagnets, with either an L1$_{2}$ cubic crystal lattice (e.g. Mn$_{3}$Ir and Mn$_{3}$Pt) or a D0$_{19}$ hexagonal structure (e.g. Mn$_{3}$Sn and Mn$_{3}$Ge), exhibit a number of novel phenomena of interest to topological spintronics. Amongst the cubic systems, for example, tetragonally distorted Mn$_{3}$Pt exhibits an intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE). However, Mn$_{3}$Pt only enters a non-collinear magnetic phase close to the stoichiometric composition and at suitably large thicknesses. Therefore, we turn our attention to Mn$_{3}$Ir, the material of choice for use in…
Materials with no net magnetization are generally not magneto-optically active. While this is individually true for a collinear antiferromagnet (AFM) and a topological insulator (TI), it is shown here that the magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) emerges when the TI and AFM films are proximity coupled. Because of the lack of macroscopic magnetization, the AFM only couples to the spin of one of the TI's surfaces breaking time-reversal and inversion symmetry -- which leads to a tiny $μ$deg MOKE signal. This small MOKE can be easily enhanced by 5 orders of magnitude, via cavity resonance, by optimizi…
