We construct exact solutions to the functional renormalisation group equation of the O(N) model and the Gross-Neveu model at large N for $2<d<4$, without specifying the form of the regulator. This allows to investigate which quantities are independent of the choice of regulator without being plagued by truncation artefacts. We find that only universal quantities, like critical exponents, and qualitative features, like the existence of a finite vacuum expectation value, are regulator-independent, whereas values of coupling constants are generically arbitrary. We also provide a general algorithm to construct a concrete operator basis for truncations in the derivative expansion and the Blaizot-Méndez-Wschebor scheme.
The Renormalisation Group is a versatile tool for the study of many systems where scale-dependent behaviour is important. Its functional formulation can be cast into the form of an exact flow equation for the scale-dependent effective action in the presence of an infrared regularisation. The functional RG flow for the scale-dependent effective action depends explicitly on the choice of regulator, while the physics does not. In this work, we systematically investigate three key aspects of how the regulator choice affects RG flows: (i) We study flow trajectories along closed loops in the space o…
We derive the temporal renormalisation group flow of the energy-momentum tensor at the example of a general scalar theory. The local causal structure of the temporal renormalisation group flow allows to monitor and control causality, unitarity and general conservation laws at each infinitesimal renormalisation group step. We explore energy-conserving truncations in a comparison of generic flows and the causal temporal flow of the energy-momentum tensor. We also observe that the temporal regulator preserves scale invariance, which is violated for generic momentum regulators. Specifically we dis…
We put forward a functional renormalisation group approach for the direct computation of real time correlation functions, also applicable at finite temperature and density. We construct a general class of regulators that preserve the space-time symmetries, and allows the computation of correlation functions at complex frequencies. This includes both imaginary time and real time, and allows in particular the use of the plethora of imaginary time results for the computation of real time correlation functions. We also discuss real time computation on the Keldysh contour with general spatial momen…
We elucidate the regulator-sourced 2PI and average 1PI approaches for deriving exact flow equations in the case of a zero dimensional quantum field theory, wherein the scale dependence of the usual renormalisation group evolution is replaced by a simple parametric dependence. We show that both approaches are self-consistent, while highlighting key differences in their behaviour and the structure of the would-be loop expansion.
A possible avenue towards a non-perturbative Quantum Field Theory (QFT) on Minkowski space is the constructive approach which employs the Euclidian path integral formulation, in the presence of both ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) regulators, as starting point. The UV regulator is to be taken away by renormalisation group techniques which in case of success leads to a measure on the space of generalised Euclidian fields in finite volume. The IR regulator corresponds to the thermodynamic limit of the system in the statistical physics sense. If the resulting measure obeys the Osterwalder-Schr…
We study a $ϕ^4$-theory at finite temperature in a finite volume. Quantum, thermal and volume fluctuations are treated with the functional renormalisation group. Specifically, we focus on the interplay of temperature and length scales driving the system. We find that thermodynamical observables at finite volume such as the pressure approach the infinite volume limit similarly to that of the vanishing temperature limit. We also advance the functional renormalisation group method at finite volume. In particular, we identify requirements for suitable regulators that admit the exponential thermal …
In physics one attempts to infer the rules governing a system given only the results of imperfect measurements. Hence, microscopic theories may be effectively indistinguishable experimentally. We develop an operationally motivated procedure to identify the corresponding equivalence classes of states, and argue that the renormalisation group arises from the inherent ambiguities associated with the classes: one encounters flow parameters as, e.g., a regulator, a scale, or a measure of precision, which specify representatives in a given equivalence class. This provides a unifying framework and id…
The scaling behaviour of euclidean quantum gravity at an asymptotically safe critical point is studied by means of the exact renormalisation group. Gauge independence is ensured via a specific parameterisation of metric fluctuations introduced in a recent paper. Within a non-perturbative approximation the beta function for Newton's constant takes a simple form to all orders in $\hbar$. A UV fixed point is found to exist for $d\leq 7$ spacetime dimensions at which the critical scaling can be assessed. The critical exponent for the Newton's constant $ν$ is found to be regulator independent close…
We provide analytical arguments showing that the non-perturbative approximation scheme to Wilson's renormalisation group known as the derivative expansion has a finite radius of convergence. We also provide guidelines for choosing the regulator function at the heart of the procedure and propose empirical rules for selecting an optimal one, without prior knowledge of the problem at stake. Using the Ising model in three dimensions as a testing ground and the derivative expansion at order six, we find fast convergence of critical exponents to their exact values, irrespective of the well-behaved r…
Hamiltonian Renormalisation, as defined within this series of works, was derived from covariant Wilson renormalisation via Osterwalder-Schrader reconstruction. As such it directly applies to QFT with a true (physical) Hamiltonian bounded from below. The validity of the scheme was positively tested for free QFT in any dimension with or without Abelian gauge symmetries of Yang-Mills type. The aim of this Hamiltonian renormalisation scheme is to remove quantisation ambiguities of Hamiltonians in interacting QFT that remain even after UV and IR regulators are removed as it happens in highly non-li…
Partial bosonisation of the two-dimensional Hubbard model focuses the functional renormalisation flow on channels in which interactions become strong and local order sets in. We compare the momentum structure of the four-fermion vertex, obtained on the basis of a patching approximation, to an effective bosonic description. For parameters in the antiferromagnetic phase near the onset of local antiferromagnetic order, the interaction of the electrons is indeed well described by the exchange of collective bosonic degrees of freedom. The residual four-fermion vertex after the subtraction of the bo…
