3D hand pose estimation from monocular videos is a long-standing and challenging problem, which is now seeing a strong upturn. In this work, we address it for the first time using a single event camera, i.e., an asynchronous vision sensor reacting on brightness changes. Our EventHands approach has characteristics previously not demonstrated with a single RGB or depth camera such as high temporal resolution at low data throughputs and real-time performance at 1000 Hz. Due to the different data modality of event cameras compared to classical cameras, existing methods cannot be directly applied to and re-trained for event streams. We thus design a new neural approach which accepts a new event stream representation suitable for learning, which is trained on newly-generated synthetic event streams and can generalise to real data. Experiments show that EventHands outperforms recent monocular methods using a colour (or depth) camera in terms of accuracy and its ability to capture hand motions of unprecedented speed. Our method, the event stream simulator and the dataset are publicly available; see https://4dqv.mpi-inf.mpg.de/EventHands/
In recent years, many works in the video action recognition literature have shown that two stream models (combining spatial and temporal input streams) are necessary for achieving state of the art performance. In this paper we show the benefits of including yet another stream based on human pose estimated from each frame -- specifically by rendering pose on input RGB frames. At first blush, this additional stream may seem redundant given that human pose is fully determined by RGB pixel values -- however we show (perhaps surprisingly) that this simple and flexible addition can provide complemen…

Recently, pose-based action recognition has gained more and more attention due to the better performance compared with traditional appearance-based methods. However, there still exist two problems to be further solved. First, existing pose-based methods generally recognize human actions with captured 3D human poses which are very difficult to obtain in real scenarios. Second, few pose-based methods model the action-related objects in recognizing human-object interaction actions in which objects play an important role. To solve the problems above, we propose a pose-based two-stream relational n…
3D Human body pose and shape estimation within a temporal sequence can be quite critical for understanding human behavior. Despite the significant progress in human pose estimation in the recent years, which are often based on single images or videos, human motion estimation on live stream videos is still a rarely-touched area considering its special requirements for real-time output and temporal consistency. To address this problem, we present a temporally embedded 3D human body pose and shape estimation (TePose) method to improve the accuracy and temporal consistency of pose estimation in li…
We present a new multi-stream 3D mesh reconstruction network (MSMR-Net) for hand pose estimation from a single RGB image. Our model consists of an image encoder followed by a mesh-convolution decoder composed of connected graph convolution layers. In contrast to previous models that form a single mesh decoding path, our decoder network incorporates multiple cross-resolution trajectories that are executed in parallel. Thus, global and local information are shared to form rich decoding representations at minor additional parameter cost compared to the single trajectory network. We demonstrate th…

In human-computer interaction, it is important to accurately estimate the hand pose especially fingertips. However, traditional approaches for fingertip localization mainly rely on depth images and thus suffer considerably from the noise and missing values. Instead of depth images, stereo images can also provide 3D information of hands and promote 3D hand pose estimation. There are nevertheless limitations on the dataset size, global viewpoints, hand articulations and hand shapes in the publicly available stereo-based hand pose datasets. To mitigate these limitations and promote further resear…

Pose guided person image generation means to generate a photo-realistic person image conditioned on an input person image and a desired pose. This task requires spatial manipulation of the source image according to the target pose. However, the generative adversarial networks (GANs) widely used for image generation and translation rely on spatially local and translation equivariant operators, i.e., convolution, pooling and unpooling, which cannot handle large image deformation. This paper introduces a novel two-stream appearance transfer network (2s-ATN) to address this challenge. It is a mult…

Recognizing actions in ice hockey using computer vision poses challenges due to bulky equipment and inadequate image quality. A novel two-stream framework has been designed to improve action recognition accuracy for hockey using three main components. First, pose is estimated via the Part Affinity Fields model to extract meaningful cues from the player. Second, optical flow (using LiteFlowNet) is used to extract temporal features. Third, pose and optical flow streams are fused and passed to fully-connected layers to estimate the hockey player's action. A novel publicly available dataset named …
This paper presents a novel method for learning a pose lexicon comprising semantic poses defined by textual instructions and their associated visual poses defined by visual features. The proposed method simultaneously takes two input streams, semantic poses and visual pose candidates, and statistically learns a mapping between them to construct the lexicon. With the learned lexicon, action recognition can be cast as the problem of finding the maximum translation probability of a sequence of semantic poses given a stream of visual pose candidates. Experiments evaluating pre-trained and zero-sho…
Several video-based 3D pose and shape estimation algorithms have been proposed to resolve the temporal inconsistency of single-image-based methods. However it still remains challenging to have stable and accurate reconstruction. In this paper, we propose a new framework Deep Two-Stream Video Inference for Human Body Pose and Shape Estimation (DTS-VIBE), to generate 3D human pose and mesh from RGB videos. We reformulate the task as a multi-modality problem that fuses RGB and optical flow for more reliable estimation. In order to fully utilize both sensory modalities (RGB or optical flow), we tr…

As participants of the MediaEval 2022 Sport Task, we propose a two-stream network approach for the classification and detection of table tennis strokes. Each stream is a succession of 3D Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) blocks using attention mechanisms. Each stream processes different 4D inputs. Our method utilizes raw RGB data and pose information computed from MMPose toolbox. The pose information is treated as an image by applying the pose either on a black background or on the original RGB frame it has been computed from. Best performance is obtained by feeding raw RGB data to one stream…

This paper presents a novel 3D human pose estimation approach using a single stream of asynchronous events as input. Most of the state-of-the-art approaches solve this task with RGB cameras, however struggling when subjects are moving fast. On the other hand, event-based 3D pose estimation benefits from the advantages of event-cameras, especially their efficiency and robustness to appearance changes. Yet, finding human poses in asynchronous events is in general more challenging than standard RGB pose estimation, since little or no events are triggered in static scenes. Here we propose the firs…

We address human action recognition from multi-modal video data involving articulated pose and RGB frames and propose a two-stream approach. The pose stream is processed with a convolutional model taking as input a 3D tensor holding data from a sub-sequence. A specific joint ordering, which respects the topology of the human body, ensures that different convolutional layers correspond to meaningful levels of abstraction. The raw RGB stream is handled by a spatio-temporal soft-attention mechanism conditioned on features from the pose network. An LSTM network receives input from a set of image l…

Pose-based action recognition is predominantly tackled by approaches which treat the input skeleton in a monolithic fashion, i.e. joints in the pose tree are processed as a whole. However, such approaches ignore the fact that action categories are often characterized by localized action dynamics involving only small subsets of part joint groups involving hands (e.g. `Thumbs up') or legs (e.g. `Kicking'). Although part-grouping based approaches exist, each part group is not considered within the global pose frame, causing such methods to fall short. Further, conventional approaches employ indep…
This article proposes a novel attention-based body pose encoding for human activity recognition that presents a enriched representation of body-pose that is learned. The enriched data complements the 3D body joint position data and improves model performance. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that learns enhanced feature representations from a given sequence of 3D body joints. To achieve this encoding, the approach exploits 1) a spatial stream which encodes the spatial relationship between various body joints at each time point to learn spatial structure involving the spatial distribu…

The cybersecurity breaches expose surveillance video streams to forgery attacks, under which authentic streams are falsified to hide unauthorized activities. Traditional video forensics approaches can localize forgery traces using spatial-temporal analysis on relatively long video clips, while falling short in real-time forgery detection. The recent work correlates time-series camera and wireless signals to detect looped videos but cannot realize fine-grained forgery localization. To overcome these limitations, we propose Secure-Pose, which exploits the pervasive coexistence of surveillance an…

Pose based hand gesture recognition has been widely studied in the recent years. Compared with full body action recognition, hand gesture involves joints that are more spatially closely distributed with stronger collaboration. This nature requires a different approach from action recognition to capturing the complex spatial features. Many gesture categories, such as "Grab" and "Pinch", have very similar motion or temporal patterns posing a challenge on temporal processing. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a two-stream neural network with one stream being a self-attention based …
General human action recognition requires understanding of various visual cues. In this paper, we propose a network architecture that computes and integrates the most important visual cues for action recognition: pose, motion, and the raw images. For the integration, we introduce a Markov chain model which adds cues successively. The resulting approach is efficient and applicable to action classification as well as to spatial and temporal action localization. The two contributions clearly improve the performance over respective baselines. The overall approach achieves state-of-the-art action c…
Generalizable person re-identification (re-ID) has attracted growing attention due to its powerful adaptation capability in the unseen data domain. However, existing solutions often neglect either crossing cameras (e.g., illumination and resolution differences) or pedestrian misalignments (e.g., viewpoint and pose discrepancies), which easily leads to poor generalization capability when adapted to the new domain. In this paper, we formulate these difficulties as: 1) Camera-Camera (CC) problem, which denotes the various human appearance changes caused by different cameras; 2) Camera-Person (CP)…

To leverage not only appearance but also scene geometry, we propose a novel self-supervised two-stream network using RGB and inferred depth information for accurate visual odometry. In addition, we introduce a sparsity-inducing data augmentation policy for ego-motion learning that effectively regularizes the pose network to enable stronger generalization performance. As a result, we show that our proposed two-stream pose network achieves sta…

Advances in computing have enabled widespread access to pose estimation, creating new sources of data streams. Unlike mock set-ups for data collection, tapping into these data streams through on-device active learning allows us to directly sample from the real world to improve the spread of the training distribution. However, on-device computing power is limited, implying that any candidate active learning algorithm should have a low compute footprint while also being reliable. Although multiple algorithms cater to pose estimation, they either use extensive compute to power state-of-the-art re…

Human action recognition in video is an active yet challenging research topic due to high variation and complexity of data. In this paper, a novel video based action recognition framework utilizing complementary cues is proposed to handle this complex problem. Inspired by the successful two stream networks for action classification, additional pose features are studied and fused to enhance understanding of human action in a more abstract and semantic way. Towards practices, not only ground truth poses but also noisy estimated poses are incorporated in the framework with our proposed pre-proces…
In this work, we present a framework based on multi-stream convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for group activity recognition. Streams of CNNs are separately trained on different modalities and their predictions are fused at the end. Each stream has two branches to predict the group activity based on person and scene level representations. A new modality based on the human pose estimation is presented to add extra information to the model. We evaluate our method on the Volleyball and Collective Activity datasets. Experimental results show that the proposed framework is able to achieve state-o…
This paper studies unsupervised monocular depth prediction problem. Most of existing unsupervised depth prediction algorithms are developed for outdoor scenarios, while the depth prediction work in the indoor environment is still very scarce to our knowledge. Therefore, this work focuses on narrowing the gap by firstly evaluating existing approaches in the indoor environments and then improving the state-of-the-art design of architecture. Unlike typical outdoor training dataset, such as KITTI with motion constraints, data for indoor environment contains more arbitrary camera movement and short…

Visual perception tasks often require vast amounts of labelled data, including 3D poses and image space segmentation masks. The process of creating such training data sets can prove difficult or time-intensive to scale up to efficacy for general use. Consider the task of pose estimation for rigid objects. Deep neural network based approaches have shown good performance when trained on large, public datasets. However, adapting these networks for other novel objects, or fine-tuning existing models for different environments, requires significant time investment to generate newly labelled instanc…

Multi-person pose estimation is challenging because it localizes body keypoints for multiple persons simultaneously. Previous methods can be divided into two streams, i.e. top-down and bottom-up methods. The top-down methods localize keypoints after human detection, while the bottom-up methods localize keypoints directly and then cluster/group them for different persons, which are generally more efficient than top-down methods. However, in existing bottom-up methods, the keypoint grouping is usually solved independently from keypoint detection, making them not end-to-end trainable and have sub…
