A high-performance implementation of a multiphase lattice Boltzmann method based on the conservative Allen-Cahn model supporting high-density ratios and high Reynolds numbers is presented. Metaprogramming techniques are used to generate optimized code for CPUs and GPUs automatically. The coupled model is specified in a high-level symbolic description and optimized through automatic transformations. The memory footprint of the resulting algorithm is reduced through the fusion of compute kernels. A roofline analysis demonstrates the excellent efficiency of the generated code on a single GPU. The resulting single GPU code has been integrated into the multiphysics framework waLBerla to run massively parallel simulations on large domains. Communication hiding and GPUDirect-enabled MPI yield near-perfect scaling behaviour. Scaling experiments are conducted on the Piz Daint supercomputer with up to 2048 GPUs, simulating several hundred fully resolved bubbles. Further, validation of the implementation is shown in a physically relevant scenario-a three-dimensional rising air bubble in water.
Peculiarities of the turbulent two phase and multiphase flows of the mutually immiscible liquids and averaged differential equations for their modeling are considered based on the approach, which was first developed and proposed by Prof. A.I. Nakorchevski as an alternative to a number of the well known averaged multiphase dynamics equations. The main difference of the new method was in an averaging of the Navier Stokes equations by phases and components in time instead of the widely spread spatial averaging in multiphase mechanics. What was more, introduction of the so called function indicato…
The present paper is devoted to the mixing and heat transfer features of mutually immiscible liquids in the two-fluid turbulent heterogeneous jet flow. Many natural and technical processes deal with the turbulent jets of mutually immiscible liquids, which represent an important class of the modern multiphase system dynamics. Differential equations for the axially symmetrical two-dimensional stationary flow and the integral correlations in a cylindrical coordinate system were considered for the jet from a nozzle into a space filled with another fluid that is not miscible with the first one. Par…
For well-stirred multiphase fluid systems the mean interface area per unit volume, or "specific interface area" $S_V$, is a significant characteristic of the system state. In particular, it is important for the dynamics of systems of immiscible liquids experiencing interfacial boiling. We estimate the value of parameter $S_V$ as a function of the heat influx $\dot{Q}_V$ to the system or the average system overheat $\langleΘ\rangle$ above the interfacial boiling point. The derived results can be reformulated for the case of an endothermic chemical reaction between two liquid reagents with the g…
We report an approach to fully visualize the flow of two immiscible fluids through a model three-dimensional (3D) porous medium at pore-scale resolution. Using confocal microscopy, we directly image the drainage of the medium by the non-wetting oil and subsequent imbibition by the wetting fluid. During imbibition, the wetting fluid pinches off threads of oil in the narrow crevices of the medium, forming disconnected oil ganglia. Some of these ganglia remain trapped within the medium. By resolving the full 3D structure of the trapped ganglia, we show that the typical ganglion size, and the tota…
A series of benchmarks based on the physical situation of "phase inversion" between two immiscible liquids is presented. These benchmarks aim at progressing toward the direct numerical simulation of two-phase flows. Several CFD codes developed in French laboratories and using either Volume-of-Fluid or Level-Set interface tracking methods are used to provide physical solutions of the benchmarks, convergence studies and code comparisons. Two typical configurations are retained, with integral scale Reynolds numbers of 13.700 and 433.000, respectively. The physics of the problem are probed through…
In-air microfluidics became a new method for technical production processes with ultra-high throughput formerly performed in micro channels. Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) provide a valuable contribution for the fundamental understanding of multiphase flow and later application design. This chapter presents a feasibility study with first DNS results of droplet-jet collisions of immiscible liquids using the in-house software Free Surface 3D (FS3D). Two cases were investigated with a setup comparable to experiments by Baumgartner et al. [1], where a droplet chain of a glycerol solution hits …
For a well-stirred multiphase fluid systems the mean interface area per unit volume, $(δ{S}/δ{V})$, is a significant characteristic of the system state. In particular, it is important for the dynamics of systems of immiscible liquids experiencing interfacial boiling. We estimate the value of parameter $(δ{S}/δ{V})$ as a function of heat influx $\dot{Q}_V$ to the system.
The effect of radiative heat transfer on the entropy generation in a two-phase non-isothermal fluid flow between two infinite horizontal parallel plates under the influence of a constant pressure gradient and transverse non-invasive magnetic field have been explored. Both the fluids are considered to be viscous, incompressible, immiscible, Newtonian, and electrically conducting. The governing equations in Cartesian coordinate are solved analytically with the help of appropriate boundary conditions to obtain the velocity and temperature profile inside the channel. Application of transverse magn…
This work describes three diffuse-interface methods for the simulation of immiscible, compressible multiphase fluid flows and elastic-plastic deformation in solids. The first method is the localized-artificial-diffusivity approach of Cook (2007), Subramaniam et al., (2018), and Adler and Lele (2019), in which artificial diffusion terms are added to the conservation equations. The second method is the gradient-form approach that is based on the quasi-conservative method of Shukla et al., (2010) and Tiwari et al., (2013), in which the diffusion and sharpening terms (together called regularizatio…
Paris (PArallel, Robust, Interface Simulator) is a finite volume code for simulations of immiscible multifluid or multiphase flows. It is based on the "one-fluid" formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations where different fluids are treated as one material with variable properties, and surface tension is added as a singular interface force. The fluid equations are solved on a regular structured staggered grid using an explicit projection method with a first-order or second-order time integration scheme. The interface separating the different fluids is tracked by a Front-Tracking (FT) method, w…

A rigorous free energy model for ternary fluid flows with density ratio up to of order $O(10^3)$ is presented and implemented using the entropic lattice Boltzmann scheme. The model is thermodynamically consistent and allows a broad range of surface tension ratios, covering both partial wetting states where Neumann triangles are formed, and full wetting states where complete encapsulation of one of fluid components is observed. We further demonstrate that we can capture the bouncing, adhesive and insertive regimes for the binary collisions between immiscible droplets suspended in air. Our appro…
