In the framework of the new version of the gedanken experiments proposed by Sorce and Wald, we investigate the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) for an Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion (EMDA) black hole. Our result shows that no violations of WCCC can occur with the increase of the background solution parameters for this near-extremal EMDA black hole when the second order correction of the perturbations is taken into account. Namely, the near-extremal EMDA black hole cannot be over-charged or over-spun.
In this paper, based on the new version of the gedanken experiments proposed by Sorce and Wald, we examine the weak cosmic censorship in the perturbation process of accreting matter fields for the charged dilaton-Lifshitz black holes. In the investigation, we assume that the black hole is perturbed by some extra matter source satisfied the null energy condition and ultimately settle down to a static charged dilaton-Lifshitz black hole in the asymptotic future. Then, after applying the Noether charge method, we derive the first-order and second-order perturbation inequalities of the perturbatio…
Based on the new version of the gedanken experiment proposed by Sorce and Wald, we investigate the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) for a Reissner-Nordström-Anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black hole under the perturbation of extra matter fields. Firstly, we propose that the cosmological constant can be effectively derived from the matter fields and its value varies with the matter fields perturbing the black hole. Meanwhile, we assume that the perturbation satisfies the stability condition. This condition means that after a long time of the perturbation, the black hole solution also belongs t…
We perform extensive nonlinear numerical simulations of the spherical collapse of (charged) wavepackets onto a charged black hole within Einstein-Maxwell theory and in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory featuring nonminimal couplings and a spontaneous scalarization mechanism. We confirm that black holes in full-fledged Einstein-Maxwell theory cannot be overcharged past extremality and no naked singularities form, in agreement with the cosmic censorship conjecture. We show that naked singularities do not form even in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory, although it is possible to form scalarized black h…
We reconsider over-charging the higher-dimensional nearly extremal charged black holes using the new version of gedanken experiment proposed recently by Sorce and Wald. As a result, we find that cosmic censorship conjecture associated with such black holes is restored by taking into account the second-order correction, albeit violated by the first-order perturbation. Namely, the higher-dimensional nearly extremal charged black holes cannot be over-charged.
In this paper, we apply the new Gedanken experiment to investigate the weak cosmic censorship conjecture for Reissner-Nordström AdS black holes surrounded by quintessence. Since the perturbation of matter fields doesn't affect the spacetime geometry, we propose the stability condition and assume the process of matter fields falling into the black hole satisfies the null energy condition. Based on Iyer-Wald formalism we can derive the first order and second-order variational identities. From the two identities and the above two conditions lead to the first-order and second-order perturbation in…
We apply the new version of gedanken experiment designed recently by Sorce and Wald, to over-spin the 5-dimensional Myers-Perry black holes. As a result, the extremal black holes cannot be over-spun at the linear order. On the other hand, although the nearly extremal black holes could be over-spun at the linear order, this process is shown to be prohibited by the quadratic order correction. Thus no violation of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture occurs around the 5-dimensional Myers-Perry black holes.
Viewing the negative cosmological constant as a dynamical quantity derived from the matter field, we study the weak cosmic censorship conjecture for the higher-dimensional asymptotically AdS Reissner-Nordström black hole. To this end, using stability assumption of matter field perturbation and null energy condition of the matter field, we first derive the first-order and second-order perturbation inequalities containing the variable cosmological constant and its conjugated quantity for the black hole . We prove that the higher-dimensional RN-AdS black hole cannot be destroyed under a second-or…
In this paper, we test the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) in the nearly extremal static charged black holes of Lanczos-Lovelock-Maxwell gravity based on the new version of gedanken experiments proposed by Sorce and Wald. After introducing the null energy condition of the matter fields, we show that the (nearly) extremal black holes can be destroyed under the first-order approximation for the case with $S'(r_h)\leq 0$, where $S(r_h)$ is the entropy of the background black hole geometry in Lanczos-Lovelock gravity. It implies that the WCCC is violated in these situations. For the case …
Quantum entanglement and relativistic causality are key concepts in theoretical works seeking to unify quantum mechanics and gravity. In this article, we show that the interplay between relativity theory and quantum entanglement has intriguing consequences for the spacetime surrounding elementary particles with spin. Classical and quantum gravity theories predict that a spin-generated magnetic dipole field causes a (slight) bending to the spacetime around particles, breaking its spherical symmetry. Motivated by the apparent break of spherical symmetry, we propose a very general gedanken experi…
Based on the new version of the gedanken experiments proposed by Sorce and Wald, we examine the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) under the spherically charged infalling matter collision process in the static charged Gauss-Bonnet black holes. After considering the null energy condition and assuming the stability condition, we derive the perturbation inequality of the matter source. As a result, we find that the static charged Gauss-Bonnet black holes cannot be overcharged under the second-order approximation of the perturbation when the null energy condition is taken into account, altho…
In this paper, we test the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) for n >= 4 dimensional nearly extremal RN-AdS black holes with non-trivial topologies, namely plane and hyperbola, using the new version of gedanken experiment proposed by Sorce and Wald. Provided that the non-electromagnetic part of the stress tensor of matter fields satisfies the null energy condition and the linear stability condition holds, we find that the black holes cannot be overcharged under the second-order perturbation approximation, which includes the self-force and finite-size effects. As a result, we conclude tha…
Motivated by the recent attempts to violate the weak cosmic censorship conjecture for near-extreme black-holes, we consider the possibility of overcharging a near-extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole by the quantum tunneling of charged particles. We consider the scattering of spin-0 and spin-1/2 particles by the black hole in a unified framework and obtain analytically, for the first time, the pertinent reflection and transmission coefficients without any small charge approximation. Based on these results, we propose some gedanken experiments that could lead to the violation of the weak cosmi…
The destruction of the black-hole event horizon is ruled out by both cosmic censorship and the generalized second law of thermodynamics. We test the consistency of this prediction in a (more) `dangerous' version of the gedanken experiment suggested by Bekenstein and Rosenzweig. A U(1)-charged particle is lowered {\it slowly} into a near extremal black hole which is not endowed with a U(1) gauge field. The energy delivered to the black hole can be {\it red-shifted} by letting the assimilation point approach the black-hole horizon. At first sight, therefore, the particle is not hindered from ent…
As the only gravity theory with quadratic curvature terms and second-order field equations, Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet gravity is a natural testbed to probe the high-curvature regime beyond General Relativity in a fully nonperturbative way. Due to nonperturbative effects of the dilatonic coupling, black holes in this theory have a minimum mass which separates a stable branch from an unstable one. The minimum mass solution is a double point in the phase diagram of the theory, wherein the critical black hole and a wormhole solution coexist. We perform extensive nonlinear simulations of the sp…
The cosmic censorship hypothesis introduced by Penrose thirty years ago is still one of the most important open questions in {\it classical} general relativity. The main goal of this paper is to put forward the idea that cosmic censorship is intrinsically a {\it quantum} phenomena. We construct a gedanken experiment which seems to violate the cosmic censorship principle within the purely {\it classical} framework of general relativity. We prove, however, that {\it quantum} physics restores the validity of the conjecture. It is therefore suggested that cosmic censorship might be enforced by a q…
We examine the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) for the extremal charged black hole in possible generalizations of Einstein-Maxwell theory due to the higher order corrections, up to fourth-derivative terms. Our derivation is based on Wald's gedanken experiment to destroy an extremal black hole. We find that, provided the null energy condition for the falling matter, the WCCC is preserved for all possible generalizations. Thus, the WCCC cannot serve as a constraint to the higher order effective theories. We also show that up to first order variations of black hole mass and charge, WCCC …
The new version of the gedanken experiment proposed by Sorce and Wald has been used to examine the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) for black holes at the second-order approximation of the matter fields perturbation. However, only considering the perturbation until the second-order approximation is incomplete because there is an optimal option such that the existing condition of the event horizon vanishes at second-order. For this circumstance, we cannot judge whether the WCCC is satisfied at this order. In our investigation, the $k$th-order perturbation inequality is generally derived…
We construct a gedanken experiment in which an extremal Kerr black hole interacts with a test electromagnetic field. Using Teukolsky's solutions for electromagnetic perturbations in Kerr spacetime, and the conservation laws imposed by the energy momentum tensor of the electromagnetic field and the Killing vectors of the spacetime, we prove that this interaction cannot convert the black hole into a naked singularity, thus cosmic censorship conjecture is not violated in this case.
Weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) is a basic principle that guarantees the predictability of spacetime and should be valid in any classical theories. One critical scientific question is whether the WCCC can serve as a constraint to the gravitational theories. To explore this question, we perform the first-order Sorce-Wald's gedanken experiments to test the WCCC in the higher-order gravitational theories and find that there exists a destruction condition $S_\text{ext}'(r_h)<0$ for the extremal black holes. To show the power of this condition, we evaluate the constraints given by WCCC in …
Motivated by the recent researches of black holes with NUT charge, we investigate the validity of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture for Kerr-Taub-NUT black hole with a test massive scalar field and a test particle, respectively. For the scalar field scattering gedanken experiment, we consider an infinitesimal time interval process. The result shows that both extremal and near-extremal Kerr-Taub-NUT black holes cannot be over-spun. For the test particle thought experiment, the study suggests that extremal Kerr-Taub-NUT black hole cannot be over-spun; while near-extremal Kerr-Taub-NUT black …
In this paper, we investigate the validity of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture(WCCC) for a rotating linear dilaton black hole from two different methods. By using the classsical ingoing test particle method, we obtain the same results as given in the new version of gedanken experiment recently proposed by Wald. We find that even for this rotating linear dilaton black hole the Iyer-Wald formalism is still functioning. By comparing these two methods, we find that the same result will be obtained in both cases up to first order. The nearly extremal black hole can be overspun, while the extre…
Recently, Li and Bambi proposed a hypothesis that the event horizon of a regular black hole can be destroyed because these objects have no gravitational singularity and therefore they are not protected by the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC). In this paper, to test their hypothesis, we perform the new version of the gedanken experiments proposed by Sorce and Wald to overcharge a near extremal static electrically regular black hole. After introducing the stability condition of the spacetime and the null energy condition of matter fields, we derive the first-order and second-order pertur…
The cosmic censorship hypothesis introduced by Penrose thirty years ago is still one of the most important open questions in {\it classical} general relativity. In this essay we put forward the idea that cosmic censorship is intrinsically a {\it quantum gravity} phenomena. To that end we construct a gedanken experiment in which cosmic censorship is violated within the purely {\it classical} framework of general relativity. We prove, however, that {\it quantum} effects restore the validity of the conjecture. This suggests that classical general relativity is inconsistent and that cosmic censors…
We consider gedanken experiments to destroy an extremal or near-extremal BTZ black hole by throwing matter into the horizon. These black holes are vacuum solutions to (2+1)-dimensional gravity theories, and are asymptotically $\mathrm{AdS}_3$. Provided the null energy condition for the falling matter, we prove the following---(i) in a Mielke-Baekler model without ghost fields, when torsion is present, an extremal BTZ black hole can be overspun and becomes a naked conical singularity; (ii) in 3-dimensional Einstein gravity and chiral gravity, which both live in torsionless limits of Mielke-Baek…
The weak cosmic censorship conjecture asserts that spacetime singularities that arise in gravitational collapse are always hidden inside of black holes, invisible to distant observers. This conjecture, put forward by Penrose more than four decades ago, is widely believed to be one of the basic principles of nature. However, a complete proof of this hypothesis is still lacking and the validity of the conjecture has therefore remained one of the most important open questions in general relativity. In this study we analyze a gedanken experiment which is designed to challenge cosmic censorship by …
Sorce and Wald proposed a new version of gedanken experiments to examine the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) in Kerr-Newmann black holes. However, their discussion only includes the second-order approximation of perturbation and there exists an optimal condition such that the validity of the WCCC is determined by the higher-order approximations. Therefore, in this paper, we extended their discussions into the high-order approximations to study the WCCC in a nearly extremal Kerr black hole. After assuming that the spacetime satisfies the stability condition and the perturbation matter …
Recently, Sorce and Wald have suggested a new version of the gedanken experiments to overspin or overcharge the Kerr-Newman black holes in Einstein-Maxwell gravity. Following their setup, in this paper, we investigate the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) in the static Einstein-Born-Infeld black holes for the Einstein gravity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics. First of all, we derive the first two order perturbation inequalities of the charged collision matter in the Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity based on the Iyer-Wald formalism as well as the null energy conditions of the matter fiel…
We construct a gedanken experiment, in which a weak wave packet of the complex massive scalar field interacts with a four-parameter (mass, angular momentum, electric and magnetic charges) Kerr-Newman black hole. We show that this interaction cannot convert an extreme the black hole into a naked sigularity for any black hole parameters and any generic wave packet configuration. The analysis therefore provides support for the weak cosmic censorship conjecture.
Spacetime singularities that arise in gravitational collapse are always hidden inside of black holes. This is the essence of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture. The hypothesis, put forward by Penrose 40 years ago, is still one of the most important open questions in general relativity. In this Letter, we reanalyze extreme situations which have been considered as counterexamples to the weak cosmic censorship conjecture. In particular, we consider the absorption of scalar particles with large angular momentum by a black hole. Ignoring back reaction effects may lead one to conclude that the in…
We study cosmic censorship in the Reissner-Nordstrom charged black hole by means of quantum gravity holding near the apparent horizons. We consider a gedanken experiment whether or not a black hole with the electric charge $Q$ less than the mass $M$ ($Q < M$) could increase its charge to go beyond the extremal limit $Q = M$ by absorbing the external charged matters. If the black hole charge could exceed the extremal value, a naked singularity would be liberated from the protection of the outer horizon and visible to distant observers, which means weak cosmic censorship to be violated in this p…
The new version of the gedanken experiments proposed by Sorce and Wald are designed to test the validity of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) by overspinning or overcharging the Kerr-Newman black hole in Einstein-Maxwell gravity. Following their setup, in this paper, we investigate the WCCC in the higher-dimensional charged black hole with a nonlinear electrodynamics source. We derive the first and seconder order perturbation inequalities of the charged collision matter based on the Iyer-Wald formalism as well as the null energy conditions, and show that they share the similar form …
An exotic Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole has an angular momentum larger than its mass in three dimension (3D), which suggests the possibility that cosmic censorship could be violated if angular momentum is extracted by the Penrose process. In this paper, we propose a mass formula for the exotic BTZ black hole and show no violation of weak cosmic censorship in the gedanken process above by understanding properly its mass formula. Unlike the other black holes, the total energy of the exotic BTZ black hole is represented by the angular momentum instead of the mass, which supports a b…
In this paper, we test the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) for the Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter (RN-dS) black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter. We consider a spherically symmetric perturbation on deriving linear and non-linear order perturbation inequalities by applying new version of gedanken experiments well accepted from the work of Sorce and Wald. Contrary to the well-known result that the Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole could be overcharged under linear order particle accretion it is hereby shown that the same black hole in perfect fluid dark matter with cosmologic…
In this addendum to [arXiv:1402.5674] two points are discussed. In the first additional evidence is provided for a dual connection between the geometric length of an Einstein-Rosen bridge and the computational complexity of the quantum state of the dual CFT's. The relation between growth of complexity and Page's ``Extreme Cosmic Censorship" principle is also remarked on. The second point involves a gedanken experiment in which Alice measures a complete set of commuting observables at her end of an Einstein-Rosen bridge is discussed. An apparent paradox is resolved by appealing to the propertie…
In this work we study a {\it gedanken} experiment constructed in order to test the cosmic censorship hypothesis and the second law of black hole thermo-dynamics. Matter with a negative gravitating energy is imagined added to a near extremal $U(1)$-charged static black hole in Einstein-Maxwell theory. The dynamics of a similar process is studied and the thermo-dynamical properties of the resulting black hole structure is discussed. A new mechanism which stabilizes black hole event horizons is shown to operate in such processes.
A possible process to destroy a black hole consists on throwing point particles with sufficiently large angular momentum into the black hole. In the case of Kerr black holes, it was shown by Wald that particles with dangerously large angular momentum are simply not captured by the hole, and thus the event horizon is not destroyed. Here we reconsider this gedanken experiment for a variety of black hole geometries, from black holes in higher dimensions to black rings. We show that this particular way of destroying a black hole does not succeed and that Cosmic Censorship is preserved.
Since 1970's, gedanken experiments have been devised to challenge the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC), which is the expectation that spacetime singularities will be hidden from faraway observers by event horizons so that classical predictability in a spacetime is preserved. These experiments involve the interaction of an extremal or a slightly sub-extremal black hole with a test particle or field, attempting to destroy the horizon, i.e. to create a so-called naked singularity. They usually conclude that WCCC cannot be violated starting from an extremal black hole, but may be violated …
The cosmic censorship hypothesis, introduced by Penrose forty years ago, is one of the corner stones of general relativity. This conjecture asserts that spacetime singularities that arise in gravitational collapse are always hidden inside of black holes. The elimination of a black-hole horizon is ruled out by this principle because that would expose naked singularities to distant observers. We test the consistency of this prediction in a gedanken experiment in which a charged object is swallowed by a charged black hole. We find that the validity of the cosmic censorship conjecture requires the…
