On 2020 February 24, during their third observing run ("O3"), the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory and Virgo Collaboration (LVC) detected S200224ca: a candidate gravitational wave (GW) event produced by a binary black hole (BBH) merger. This event was one of the best-localized compact binary coalescences detected in O3 (with 50%/90% error regions of 13/72 deg$^2$), and so the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory performed rapid near-UV/X-ray follow-up observations. Swift-XRT and UVOT covered approximately 79.2% and 62.4% (respectively) of the GW error region, making S200224ca the BBH event most thoroughly followed-up in near-UV (u-band) and X-ray to date. No likely EM counterparts to the GW event were found by the Swift BAT, XRT, or UVOT, nor by other observatories. Here we report on the results of our searches for an EM counterpart, both in the BAT data near the time of the merger, and in follow-up UVOT/XRT observations. We also discuss the upper limits we can place on EM radiation from S200224ca, and the implications these limits have on the physics of BBH mergers. Namely, we place a shallow upper limit on the dimensionless BH charge, $\hat{q} < 1.4 \times10^{-4}$, and an upper limit on the isotropic-equivalent energy of a blast wave $E < 4.1\times10^{51}$ erg (assuming typical GRB parameters).
We are conducting an archival Swift program to measure multiwavelength variability in active galactic nuclei (AGN). This variability information will provide constraints on the geometry, physical conditions and processes of the structures around the central black holes that emit and reprocess the observed flux. Among our goals are: (1) to produce a catalog of type 1 AGN with time-resolved multi-wavelength data; (2) to characterize variability in the optical, UV and X-ay bands as well as changes in spectral slope; (3) to quantify the impact of variability on multi-wavelength properties; and (4)…
We report our multiwavelength study of the 2011 outburst evolution of the newly discovered black hole candidate X-ray binary Swift J1357.2-0933. We analysed the Swift X-ray telescope and Ultraviolet/Optical telescope (UVOT) data taken during the ~7 months duration of the outburst. It displayed a 2-10 keV X-ray peak luminosity of ~1E35(D/1.5 kpc)^2 erg s-1 which classifies the source as a very faint X-ray transient. We found that the X-ray spectrum at the peak was consistent with the source being in the hard state, but it softened with decreasing luminosity, a common behaviour of black holes at…
The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory carried out prompt searches for gravitational wave (GW) events detected by the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration (LVC) during the second observing run ("O2"). Swift performed extensive tiling of eight LVC triggers, two of which had very low false-alarm rates (GW 170814 and the epochal GW 170817), indicating a high confidence of being astrophysical in origin; the latter was the first GW event to have an electromagnetic counterpart detected. In this paper we describe the follow-up performed during O2 and the results of our searches. No GW electromagnetic counterparts we…
Gamma-ray observations of a stellar tidal disruption event (TDE) detected by the Swift satellite and follow up observations in radio, mm, infrared and x-ray bands have provided a rich data set to study accretion onto massive blackholes, production of relativistic jets and their interaction with the surrounding medium. The radio and x-ray data for TDE Swift J1644+57 provide a conflicting picture regarding the energy in relativistic jet produced in this event: x-ray data suggest jet energy declining with time as t^{-5/3} whereas the nearly flat lightcurves in radio and mm bands lasting for about…
We present coordinated multiwavelength observations of the high Galactic latitude (b=+50 deg) black hole X-ray binary (XRB) J1357.2-0933 in quiescence. Our broadband spectrum includes strictly simultaneous radio and X-ray observations, and near-infrared, optical, and ultraviolet data taken 1-2 days later. We detect Swift J1357.2-0933 at all wavebands except for the radio (f_5GHz < 3.9 uJy/beam). Given current constraints on the distance (2.3-6.3 kpc), its 0.5-10 keV X-ray flux corresponds to an Eddington ratio Lx/Ledd = 4e-9 -- 3e-8 (assuming a black hole mass of 10 Msun). The broadband spectr…
$\textit{Swift}$'s rapid slewing, flexible planning, and multi-wavelength instruments make it the most capable space-based follow-up engine for finding poorly localized sources. During O1 and O2 $\textit{Swift}$ successfully tiled hundreds of square-degrees of sky in the LVC localization regions, searching for, and identifying, possible X-ray and UV/O transients in the field. $\textit{Swift}$ made important contributions to the discovery and characterization of the kilonova AT 2017gfo, discovering the UV emission and providing the deepest X-ray upper limits in the first 24 hours after the trig…
We characterized the broad-band X-ray spectra of Swift J1745-26 during the decay of the 2013 outburst using INTEGRAL ISGRI, JEM-X and Swift XRT. The X-ray evolution is compared to the evolution in optical and radio. We fit the X- ray spectra with phenomenological and Comptonization models. We discuss possible scenarios for the physical origin of a ~50 day flare observed both in optical and X- rays ~170 days after the peak of the outburst. We conclude that it is a result of enhanced mass accretion in response to an earlier heating event. We characterized the evolution in the hard X-ray band and…
We conducted the first long-term (60 days), multiwavelength (optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray) simultaneous monitoring of Cen X-4 with daily Swift observations from June to August 2012, with the goal of understanding variability in the low mass X-ray binary Cen X-4 during quiescence. We found Cen X-4 to be highly variable in all energy bands on timescales from days to months, with the strongest quiescent variability a factor of 22 drop in the X-ray count rate in only 4 days. The X-ray, UV and optical (V band) emission are correlated on timescales down to less than 110 s. The shape of the correl…
We report detection of a very bright X-ray-UV-optical outburst of OJ 287 in April-June 2020; the second brightest since the beginning of our Swift multi-year monitoring in late 2015. It is shown that the outburst is predominantly powered by jet emission. Optical-UV-X-rays are closely correlated, and the low-energy part of the XMM-Newton spectrum displays an exceptionally soft emission component consistent with a synchrotron origin. A much harder X-ray powerlaw component (Gamma-x = 2.4, still relatively steep when compared to expectations from inverse-Compton models) is detected out to 70 keV b…

We present the results of a multiwavelength observational campaign on the TeV binary system LS I +61 303 with the VERITAS telescope array (>200 GeV), Fermi-LAT (0.3-300 GeV), and Swift-XRT (2-10 keV). The data were taken from December 2011 through January 2012 and show a strong detection in all three wavebands. During this period VERITAS obtained 24.9 hours of quality selected livetime data in which LS I +61 303 was detected at a statistical sig- nificance of 11.9 sigma. These TeV observations show evidence for nightly variability in the TeV regime at a post-trial significance of 3.6 sigma. Th…
In this work, we present the results obtained from a multi-wavelength campaign, as well as from the public Swift/BAT, XRT, and UVOT data of GRB 060111B for which a bright optical emission was measured with good temporal resolution during the prompt phase. We identified the host galaxy at R~25 mag; its featureless spectral continuum and brightness, as well as the non-detection of any associated supernova 16 days after the trigger and other independent redshift estimates, converge to z~1-2. From the analysis of the early afterglow SED, we find that non-negligible host galaxy dust extinction, in …
We present contemporaneous X-ray, ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared observations of the black hole binary system, Swift J1753.5-0127, acquired in 2012 October. The UV observations, obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope, are the first UV spectra of this system. The dereddened UV spectrum is characterized by a smooth, blue continuum and broad emission lines of CIV and HeII. The system was stable in the UV to <10% during our observations. We estimated the interstellar reddening by fitting the 2175 A absorption feature and fit the interstellar absorption …
Hard X-ray surveys like those provided by IBIS and BAT on board the INTEGRAL and Swift satellites list a significant number of sources which are unidentified and/or unclassified and which deserve multiwaveband observations to be properly characterized. In this work we have been able to follow up 148 such sources, finding 27 X-ray binaries and 121 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). From the AGN sample we extracted a set of 94 AGN, belonging to the INTEGRAL/IBIS and Swift/BAT surveys, for which we performed an X-ray study to determine absorption and 2-10 keV flux by means of XMM-Newton and Swift/XRT …
We present the spectral/timing properties of the bare Seyfert galaxy Ark 120 through a deep ~420ks XMM-Newton campaign plus recent NuSTAR observations and a ~6-month Swift monitoring campaign. We investigate the spectral decomposition through fractional rms, covariance and difference spectra, finding the mid- to long-timescale (~day-year) variability to be dominated by a relatively smooth, steep component, peaking in the soft X-ray band. Additionally, we find evidence for variable FeK emission red-ward of the FeK-alpha core on long timescales, consistent with previous findings. We detect a cle…
We present observations of the BL Lac object 1ES 0414+009 in the >200 GeV gamma-ray band by the VERITAS array of Cherenkov telescopes. 1ES 0414+009 was observed by VERITAS between January 2008 and February 2011, resulting in 56.2 hours of good quality pointed observations. These observations resulted in a detection of 822 events from the source corresponding to a statistical significance of 6.4 standard deviations (6.4 sigma) above the background. The source flux, showing no evidence for variability, is measured as 5.2 +/- 1.1_stat +/- 2.6_sys * 10^-12 photons cm^-2 s^-1 above 200 GeV, equival…
We present results from a long-term monitoring campaign on the TeV binary LSI +61 303 with VERITAS at energies above 500 GeV, and in the 2-10 keV hard X-ray bands with RXTE and Swift, sampling nine 26.5 day orbital cycles between September 2006 and February 2008. The binary was observed by VERITAS to be variable, with all integrated observations resulting in a detection at the 8.8 sigma (2006/2007) and 7.3 sigma (2007/2008) significance level for emission above 500 GeV. The source was detected during active periods with flux values ranging from 5 to 20% of the Crab Nebula, varying over the cou…
PSR J2032+4127 has recently been identified as being in a long period (45-50 years) binary in a highly eccentric orbit with the Be star MT91 213. Periastron is due to occur in November 2017 and this rare occurrence has prompted a multiwavelength monitoring campaign to determine if the system is a gamma-ray binary, and, if so, to study what would be only the second gamma-ray binary with a known compact object. In the same direction as TeV J2032+4130, gamma-ray emission from this binary system could be related to the extended very high energy gamma-ray emission from that region. As part of this …
We have obtained optical spectroscopy and photometry data during four years after the event. The long-term photometric light-curve and the equivalent widths of the Halpha and He I 6678 lines were used to monitor the state of the Be star disk. The Halpha line profiles show evidence for V/R variability that was accounted for by fitting the Halpha spectral line profile with two Gaussian functions. We divided our data into three phases according to the intensity of the X-ray, optical, and infrared emission. Phase I covers the rise and decay of the giant X-ray outburst that took place in October to…
A small fraction of candidate tidal disruption events (TDEs) show evidence of powerful relativistic jets, which are particularly pronounced at radio wavelengths, and likely contribute non-thermal emission at a wide range of wavelengths. A non-thermal emission component can be diagnosed using linear polarimetry, even when the total received light is dominated by emission from an accretion disk or disk outflow. In this paper we present Very Large Telescope (VLT) measurements of the linear polarisation of the optical light of jetted TDE Swift J2058+0516. This is the second jetted TDE studied in t…
We present the results from the timing and spectral study of Mrk\,421 based mainly on the \emph{Swift} data in the X-ray energy range obtained during the time interval 2015\,December--2018\,April. The most extreme X-ray flaring activity on the long-term, daily and intraday timescales was observed during the 2-month period which started in 2017\,December when the 0.3--10\,keV flux exceeded a level of 5$\times$10$^{-9}$erg\,cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, recorded only twice previously. While the TeV-band and X-ray variabilities mostly were correlated, the source often varied in a complex manner in the MeV--…

We present rapid, multiwavelength photometry of the low-mass X-ray binary Swift J1357.2-0933 during its 2017 outburst. Using several sets of quasi-simultaneous ULTRACAM/NTT (optical), NuSTAR (X-ray), XRT/Swift (X-ray), SALT (optical) and ATCA (radio) observations taken during outburst decline, we confirm the frequent optical dipping that has previously been noted both in outburst and in quiescence. We also find: 1) that the dip frequency decreases as the outburst decays, similar to what was seen in the previous outburst, 2) that the dips produce a shape similar to that in binary systems with p…
Galactic black hole transients show many interesting phenomena during outburst decays. We present simultaneous X-ray (RXTE, Swift, and INTEGRAL), and optical/near-infrared (O/NIR) observations (SMARTS) of the X-ray transient XTE J1752-223 during its outburst decay in 2010. The multiwavelength observations over 150 days in 2010 cover the transition from soft to hard spectral state. We discuss the evolution of radio emission is with respect to the O/NIR light curve which shows several flares. One of those flares is bright and long, starting about 60 days after the transition in X-ray timing prop…

Supermassive binary black holes (SMBBHs) are laboratories par excellence for relativistic effects, including precession effects in the Kerr metric and the emission of gravitational waves. Binaries form in the course of galaxy mergers, and are a key component in our understanding of galaxy evolution. Dedicated searches for SMBBHs in all stages of their evolution are therefore ongoing and many systems have been discovered in recent years. Here we provide a review of the status of observations with a focus on the multiwavelength detection methods and the underlying physics. Finally, we highlight …
In studies of accreting black holes in binary systems, empirical relations have been proposed to quantify the coupling between accretion processes and ejection mechanisms. These processes are probed respectively by means of X-ray and radio/optical-infrared observations. The relations predict, given certain accretion conditions, the expected energy output in the form of a jet. We investigated this coupling by studying the black hole candidate Swift J1753.5-0127, via multiwavelength coordinated observations over a period of ~4 years. We present the results of our campaign showing that, all along…
Context: Active Galactic Nuclei are highly variable emitters of electromagnetic waves from the radio to the gamma-ray regime. This variability may be periodic, which in turn could be the signature of a binary black hole. Systems of black holes are strong emitters of gravitational waves whose amplitude depends on the binary orbital parameters as the component mass, the orbital semi-major-axis and eccentricity. Aims: It is our aim to prove the existence of periodicity of the AGN Markarian 501 from several observations in different wavelengths. A simultaneous periodicity in different wavelengths …
The candidate black hole X-ray binary Swift J1753.5-0127 faded to quiescence in 2016 November, after a prolonged outburst that was discovered in 2005. Nearly three months later the system displayed renewed activity that lasted through 2017 July. Here, we present radio and X-ray monitoring over ~3 months of the renewed activity to study the coupling between the jet and the inner regions of the disk/jet system. Our observations cover low X-ray luminosities that have not historically been well-sampled (Lx~2e33 - 1e36 erg/s; 1-10 keV), including time periods when the system was both brightening an…
We present a multi-band search for X-ray, optical and $γ$-ray emission of the radio binary millisecond pulsar J1836-2354A, hosted in the globular cluster M22. X-ray emission is significantly detected in two Chandra observations, performed in 2005 and 2014, at a luminosity of $\sim$2-3$\times$10$^{30}$ erg s$^{-1}$, in the 0.5-8 keV energy range. The radio and the X-ray source positions are found consistent within 1$σ$ error box. No detection is found in archival XMM-Newton and Swift/XRT observations, compatible with the Chandra flux level. The low statistics prevents us to assess if the X-ray …
We present multiwavelength studies of a transient X-ray source, XMMSL1 J131952.3+225958, associated with the galaxy NGC 5092 at $z=0.023$ detected in the XMM-Newton SLew survey (XMMSL). The source brightened in the 0.2--2 keV band by a factor of $>20$ in 2005 as compared with previous flux limits and then faded by a factor of $>200$ as observed with it XMM-Newton in 2013 and with it Swift in 2018. At the flaring state, the X-ray spectrum can be modeled with a blackbody at a temperature of $\sim$ 60 eV and an overall luminosity of $\sim$ $1.5 \times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$. A UV flare and optical…
We report on a multiwavelength observational campaign of the black hole X-ray binary Swift J1753.5-0127 that consists of an ESO/X-shooter spectrum supported by contemporaneous Swift/XRT+UVOT and ATCA data. ISM absorption lines in the X-shooter spectrum allows us to determine E(B-V)=0.45+/-0.02 along the line-of-sight to the source. We also report detection of emission signatures of He II at 4686 angstrom, H alpha, and, for the first time, H I at 10906 angstrom and Paschen Beta. The double-peaked morphology of these four lines is typical of the chromosphere of a rotating accretion disk. Nonethe…
We present long-term multiwavelength observations of blazar CTA 102 ($z=1.037$). Detailed temporal and spectral analyses of $γ$-ray, X-ray and UV/optical data observed by {\it Fermi}-LAT, Swift XRT, NuSTAR and Swift-UVOT over a period of 14 years, between August 2008 and March 2022, was performed. We found strong variability of source emission in all the considered bands, especially in the $γ$-ray band it exhibited extreme outbursts when the flux crossed the level of $10^{-5}\:{\rm photon\:cm^{-2}\:s^{-1}}$. Using the Bayesian Blocks algorithm, we split the adaptively binned $γ$-ray light curv…
The radio and gamma-ray pulsar PSR J2032+4127 was recently found to be in a decades-long orbit with the Be star MT91 213, with the pulsar moving rapidly towards periastron. This binary shares many similar characteristics with the previously unique binary system PSR B1259-63/LS 2883. Here, we describe radio, X-ray, and optical monitoring of PSR J2032+4127/MT91 213. Our extended orbital phase coverage in radio, supplemented with Fermi gamma-ray data, allows us to update and refine the orbital period to 45-50 yr and time of periastron passage to 2017 November. We analyse archival and recent Chand…
Simultaneous multiwavelength observations were recently performed for three black hole candidates --- SWIFT J1753.5-0127, GRO J1655-40 and XTE J1720-318. In this paper we test the accretion-jet model originally proposed to XTE J1118+480 by investigating the hard state of these three sources using this model. The accretion flow in the model is composed of an inner hot accretion flow and an outer truncated thin disk. We find that the model satisfactorily explains the spectrum ranging from radio to X-rays, with the radio and X-ray spectra dominated by the synchrotron and thermal Comptonization em…
We conduct a hard X-ray to radio multiwavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) decomposition for 57 local luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) observed with Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array and/or Swift/Burst Alert Telescope in GOALS (Armus et al. 2009) sample. We modify the latest SED-fitting code X-CIGALE by implementing the infrared (IR) CLUMPY model, allowing the multiwavelength study with the X-ray torus model (XCLUMPY) self-consistently. Adopting the torus parameters obtained by the X-ray fitting (Yamada et al. 2021), we estimate the properties of host galaxie…
The LIGO and Virgo scientific collaboration (LVC) alerted two binary neutron star (BNS) merger candidates, S190425z and S190426c. Fermi-GBM observed 55.6\% (for S190425z) and 100\% (for S190426c) of the probability regions of both events at the respective merger times, but no gamma-ray burst (GRB) was detected in either case. The derived luminosity upper limits suggest that a short GRB similar to GRB 170817A would not be detectable for both cases due to their larger distances than GW170817. Assuming that the jet profile obtained from the GW170817/GRB 170817A is quasi-universal for all BNS-GRB …
We report results from our ongoing project MOMO (Multiwavelength Observations and Modelling of OJ 287). In this latest publication of a sequence, we combine our Swift UVOT--XRT and Effelsberg radio data (2.6-44 GHz) between 2019 and 2022.04 with public SMA data and gamma-ray data from the Fermi satellite. The observational epoch covers OJ 287 in a high state of activity from radio to X-rays. The epoch also covers two major events predicted by the binary supermassive black hole (SMBH) model of OJ 287. Spectral and timing analyses clearly establish: a new UV-optical minimum state in 2021 Decembe…
We present an analysis of the multiwavelength behaviour of the blazar OJ 248 at z = 0.939 in the period 2006-2013. We use low-energy data (optical, near-infrared, and radio) obtained by 21 observatories participating in the GLAST-AGILE Support Program (GASP) of the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT), as well as data from the Swift (optical-UV and X-rays) and Fermi (gamma-rays) satellites, to study flux and spectral variability and correlations among emissions in different bands. We take into account the effect of absorption by the Damped Lyman Alpha intervening system at z = 0.525. Two major …
GRB 160625B, one of the brightest bursts in recent years, was simultaneously observed by Fermi and Swift satellites, and ground-based optical telescopes in three different events separated by long periods of time. In this paper the non-thermal multiwavelength observations of GRB 160625B are described and a transition phase from wind-type-like medium to interstellar medium between the early (event II) and the late (event III) afterglow is found. The multiwavelength observations of the early afterglow are consistent with the afterglow evolution starting at $\sim$ 150 s in a stellar wind medium w…
The bright Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509 was monitored by XMM-Newton and other satellites in 2009 to constrain the location of the outflow. We have studied the response of the photoionised gas to changes in the ionising flux produced by the central regions. We used the 5 discrete ionisation components A-E detected in the time-averaged spectrum taken with the RGS. Using the ratio of fluxed EPIC and RGS spectra, we put tight constraints on the variability of the absorbers. Monitoring with the Swift satellite started 6 weeks before the XMM-Newton observations, allowing to use the ionising flux history…
