The time-series component of WISE is a valuable resource for the study of variable objects. We present an analysis of an all-sky sample of ~450,000 AllWISE+NEOWISE infrared light curves of likely variables identified in AllWISE. By computing periodograms of all these sources, we identify ~56,000 periodic variables. Of these, ~42,000 are short-period (P<1 day), near-contact or contact eclipsing binaries, many of which are on the main sequence. We use the periodic and aperiodic variables to test computationally inexpensive methods of periodic variable classification and identification, utilizing various measures of the probability distribution function of fluxes and of timescales of variability. The combination of variability measures from our periodogram and non-parametric analyses with infrared colors from WISE and absolute magnitudes, colors and variability amplitude from Gaia is useful for the identification and classification of periodic variables. Furthermore, we show that the effectiveness of non-parametric methods for the identification of periodic variables is comparable to that of the periodogram but at a much lower computational cost. Future surveys can utilize these methods to accelerate more traditional time-series analyses and to identify evolving sources missed by periodogram-based selections.
Using Keck laser guide star adaptive optics imaging, we have found that the T9 dwarf WISE J1217+1626 and T8 dwarf WISE J1711+3500 are exceptional binaries, with unusually wide separations (~0.8 arcsec, 8-15 AU), large near-IR flux ratios (~2-3 mags), and small mass ratios (~0.5) compared to previously known field ultracool binaries. Keck/NIRSPEC H-band spectra give a spectral type of Y0 for WISE J1217+1626B, and photometric estimates suggest T9.5 for WISE J1711+3500B. The WISE J1217+1626AB system is very similar to the T9+Y0 binary CFBDSIR J1458+1013AB; these two systems are the coldest known …
The multiplicity properties of brown dwarfs are critical empirical constraints for formation theories, while multiples themselves provide unique opportunities to test evolutionary and atmospheric models and examine empirical trends. Studies using high-resolution imaging can not only uncover faint companions, but they can also be used to determine dynamical masses through long-term monitoring of binary systems. We have begun a search for the coolest brown dwarfs using preliminary processing of data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and have confirmed many of the candidates as …
Route & Wolszczan (2016) recently detected five radio bursts from the T6 dwarf WISEP J112254.73+255021.5 and used the timing of these events to propose that this object rotates with an ultra-short period of ~17.3 minutes. We conducted follow-up observations with the Very Large Array and Gemini-North but found no evidence for this periodicity. We do, however, observe variable, highly circularly polarized radio emission possibly with a period of 116 minutes, although our observation lasted only 162 minutes and so more data are needed to confirm it. Our proposed periodicity is typical of other ra…
Discovery of the 6.7-hour periodicity in the X-ray source 1E 161348-5055 in RCW 103 has led to investigations of the nature of this periodicity. We explore a model for 1E 161348-5055, wherein a fast-spinning neutron star with a magnetic field $\sim 10^{12}$ G in a young pre-Low-Mass X-ray Binary (pre-LMXB) with an eccentric orbit of period 6.7 hr operates in the "propeller" phase. The 6.7-hr light curve of 1E 161348-5055 can be quantitatively accounted by a model of orbitally-modulated mass transfer through a viscous accretion disk and subsequent propeller emission (both Illarionov-Sunyaev typ…
I present the Phase Distance Correlation (PDC) periodogram -- a new periodicity metric, based on the Distance Correlation concept of Gábor Székely. For each trial period PDC calculates the distance correlation between the data samples and their phases. PDC requires adaptation of the Székely's distance correlation to circular variables (phases). The resulting periodicity metric is best suited to sparse datasets, and it performs better than other methods for sawtooth-like periodicities. These include Cepheid and RR-Lyrae light curves, as well as radial velocity curves of eccentric spectroscopic …
The eShel, an off-the-shelf, fiber-fed echelle spectrograph ($R \approx 10,000$), was installed on the 1m telescope at the Wise observatory in Israel. We report the installation of the multi-order spectrograph, and describe our pipeline to extract stellar radial velocity from the obtained spectra. We also introduce a new algorithm---UNICOR, to remove radial-velocity systematics that can appear in some of the observed orders. We show that the system performance is close to the photon-noise limit for exposures with more than $10^7$ counts, with a precision that can get better than 200 m/s for F-…
We present results of the investigation of the nature of double periodic variables (DPVs). We have selected a sample of Galactic eclipsing DPVs for a multiwavelength photometric study aimed to reveal their nature. The short orbital periodicity and the cyclic variability are decoupled and separately investigated. Shapes of orbital light curves are consistent with semi-detached binaries. The amplitude of the long cycle is always larger in redder bandpasses.
The discovery of periodicity in the arrival times of the fast radio bursts (FRBs) poses a challenge to the oft-studied magnetar scenarios. However, models that postulate that FRBs result from magnetized shocks or magnetic reconnection in a relativistic outflow are not specific to magnetar engines; instead, they require only the impulsive injection of relativistic energy into a dense magnetized medium. Motivated thus, we outline a new scenario in which FRBs are powered by short-lived relativistic outflows (``flares'') from accreting black holes or neutron stars, which propagate into the cavity …
We present the first analysis of results from the SuperWASP Variable Stars Zooniverse project, which is aiming to classify 1.6 million phase-folded light curves of candidate stellar variables observed by the SuperWASP all sky survey with periods detected in the SuperWASP periodicity catalogue. The resultant data set currently contains $>$1 million classifications corresponding to $>$500,000 object-period combinations, provided by citizen scientist volunteers. Volunteer-classified light curves have $\sim$89 per cent accuracy for detached and semi-detached eclipsing binaries, but only $\sim$9 pe…

We investigate the properties of 367 ultra-short period binary candidates selected from 31,000 sources recently identified from Catalina Surveys data. Based on light curve morphology, along with WISE, SDSS and GALEX multi-colour photometry, we identify two distinct groups of binaries with periods below the 0.22 day contact binary minimum. In contrast to most recent work, we spectroscopically confirm the existence of M-dwarf+M-dwarf contact binary systems. By measuring the radial velocity variations for five of the shortest-period systems, we find examples of rare cool-white dwarf+M-dwarf binar…
We have compiled the first all-sky mid-infrared variable-star catalog based on Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) five-year survey data. Requiring more than 100 detections for a given object, 50,282 carefully and robustly selected periodic variables are discovered, of which 34,769 (69%) are new. Most are located in the Galactic plane and near the equatorial poles. A method to classify variables based on their mid-infrared light curves is established using known variable types in the General Catalog of Variable Stars. Careful classification of the new variables results in a tally of 21,…
The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer Preliminary Data Release Source Catalog contains over 257 million objects. We describe the method used to flag variable source candidates in the Catalog. Using a method based on the chi- square of single-exposure flux measurements, we generated a variability flag for each object, and have identified almost 460,000 candidates sources that exhibit significant flux variability with greater than \sim 7σ confidence. We discuss the flagging method in detail and describe its benefits and limitations. We also present results from the flagging method, including e…

We present initial results from a wide-field (30,000 deg^2) search for L/T transition brown dwarfs within 25 pc using the Pan-STARRS1 and WISE surveys. Previous large-area searches have been incomplete for L/T transition dwarfs, because these objects are faint in optical bands and have near-infrared colors that are difficult to distinguish from background stars. To overcome these obstacles, we have cross-matched the Pan-STARRS1 (optical) and WISE (mid-IR) catalogs to produce a unique multi-wavelength database for finding ultracool dwarfs. As part of our initial discoveries, we have identified …
Photometric data from the ASAS - South (declination less than 29 deg) survey have been used for identification of bright stars located near the sources from the ROSAT All Sky Survey Bright Source Catalog (RBSC). In total 6028 stars brighter than 12.5 mag in I- or V -bands have been selected and analyzed for periodicity. Altogether 2302 variable stars have been found with periods ranging from 0.137 d to 193 d. Most of these stars have X-ray emission of coronal origin with a few cataclysmic binaries and early type stars with colliding winds. Whenever it was possible we collected data available i…
We apply the ${\tt weirddetector}$, a nonparametric signal detection algorithm based on phase dispersion minimization, in a search for low duty-cycle periodic signals in the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (${\it TESS}$) photometry. Our approach, in contrast to commonly used model-based approaches specifically for flagging transits, eclipsing binaries, or other similarly periodic events, makes minimal assumptions about the shape of a periodic signal, with the goal of finding "weird" signals of unexpected or arbitrary shape. In total, 248,301 ${\it TESS}$ sources from the first-year South…
Context. GX 1+4 belongs to a rare class of X-ray binaries with red giant donors, symbiotic X-ray binaries. The system has a history of complicated variability on multiple timescales in the optical light and X-rays. The nature of this variability remains poorly understood. Aims. We study variability of GX 1+4 on long time-scale in X-ray and optical bands. Methods. The presented X-ray observations are from INTEGRAL Soft Gamma-Ray Imager and RXTE All Sky Monitor. The optical observations are from INTEGRAL Optical Monitoring Camera. Results. The variability of GX 1+4 both in optical light and hard…
Dwarf carbon (dC) stars, main sequence stars showing carbon molecular bands, are enriched by mass transfer from a previous asymptotic-giant-branch (AGB) companion, which has since evolved to a white dwarf. While previous studies have found radial-velocity variations for large samples of dCs, there are still relatively few dC orbital periods in the literature and no dC eclipsing binaries have yet been found. Here, we analyze photometric light curves from DR5 of the Zwicky Transient Facility for a sample of 944 dC stars. From these light curves, we identify 34 periodically variable dC stars. Rem…
Context. The variability of the Wolf-Rayet star EZ CMa has been documented for close to half a century, and a clear periodicity of $\sim$3.7 days is established. However, all attempts to prove that it is a binary have failed because the photometric, spectroscopic, and polarimetric variations are not coherent over more than a few orbital cycles. Aims. In this letter we show that the lack of coherence in the variability can be explained with a very rapid apsidal motion in a binary orbit.} Methods. We measured the times of minima in a recently published exceptionally long photometric light curve …
As extensive ground-based observations and characterisation of different variable stars are of the utmost importance in preparing optimal input catalogues for space missions, our aim was to search for new variable stars in selected fields of the northern sky. We obtained 24470 CCD images and analysed photometric time series of stars using the DAOPHOT based package Muniwin as the first step, and the Period04 package was used to further analyse the suspected new variable stars. The light curves and other observational results are presented for 3598 stars online. We found 81 new variable stars, a…
