We present a general method to derive detuning-modualted composite pulses (DMCPs) as N rotations of a canonical two-state quantum system to create accurate and robust pulses that are independent of the initial state of the system. This scheme has minimal pulse overhead, and achieves pulses that are stable against amplitude errors well within the $10^{-4}$ threshold that may be suitable for quantum information processing (QIP), within the lifetime of the system. This family of pulses enables to overcome inevitable fabrication errors in silicon photonics, and relax the need for a precise initial state of light coupled into the system to achieve accurate light transfer. Furthermore, we extend universal DMCPs to n-level systems with irreducible SU(2) symmetry to create state transfer that is highly robust to errors in the pulse area from any initial state.
We introduce a novel control method for robust quantum information processing suited for quantum integrated photonics. We utilize off-resonant detunings as control parameters to derive a new family of composite pulses for high-fidelity population transfer within the quantum error threshold. By design, our detuning-modulated N-piece composite sequences correct for any control inaccuracies including pulse strength, duration, resonance offsets errors, Stark shifts, unwanted frequency chirp, etc. We reveal the symmetries of the pulses that allow for straightforward scaling with minimal pulse overh…
Coherent control of two-state systems is traditionally achieved by resonant pulses of specific Rabi frequency and duration, by adiabatic techniques using level crossings or delayed pulses, or by sequences of pulses with precise relative phases (composite pulses). Here we develop a method for high-fidelity coherent control which uses a sequence of detuning pulses. By using the detuning pulse areas as control parameters, and driving on an analogy with composite pulses, we report a great variety of detuning pulse sequences for broadband and narrowband transition probability profiles.
We present a method to construct high-fidelity quantum phase gates, which are insensitive to errors in various experimental parameters. The phase gates consist of a pair of two sequential broadband composite pulses, with a phase difference $π+α/2$ between them, where $α$ is the desired gate phase. By using composite pulses which compensate systematic errors in the pulse area, the frequency detuning, or both the area and the detuning, we thereby construct composite phase gates which compensate errors in the same parameters. Particularly interesting are phase gates which use the recently discove…
We introduce a method to rotate arbitrarily the excitation profile of universal broadband composite pulse sequences for robust high-fidelity population inversion. These pulses compensate deviations in any experimental parameter (e.g. pulse amplitude, pulse duration, detuning from resonance, Stark shifts, unwanted frequency chirp, etc.) and are applicable with any pulse shape. The rotation allows to achieve higher order robustness to any combination of pulse area and detuning errors at no additional cost. The latter can be particularly useful, e.g., when detuning errors are due to Stark shifts …
We study the motion of a cold atom in a frequency-modulated standing laser wave. If the detuning between the atomic electronic transition and the field is large, the atom moves in a modulated optical potential demonstrating known classical nonlinear effects such as chaos and nonlinear resonances. If the atom-field detuning is small, then two optical potentials emerge in the system, and the atom performs Landau-Zener (LZ) tunnelings between them. It is a radically non-classical behavior. However, we show that classical nonlinear structures in system's phase space (KAM-tori and chaotic layers) s…
Composite pulses --- sequences of pulses with well defined relative phases --- are an efficient, robust and flexible technique for coherent control of quantum systems. Composite sequences can compensate a variety of experimental errors in the driving field (e.g. in the pulse amplitude, duration, detuning, chirp, etc.) or in the quantum system and its environment (e.g. inhomogeneous broadening, stray electric or magnetic fields, unwanted couplings, etc.). The control parameters are the relative phases between the constituent pulses in the composite sequence, an accurate control over which is re…
We introduce universal broadband composite pulse sequences for robust high-fidelity population inversion in two-state quantum systems, which compensate deviations in any experimental parameter (e.g. pulse amplitude, pulse duration, detuning from resonance, Stark shifts, unwanted frequency chirp, etc.) and are applicable with any pulse shape. We demonstrate the efficiency and universality of these composite pulses by experimental data on rephasing of atomic coherences in a $\text{Pr}^{3+}\text{:}\text{Y}_2\text{SiO}_5$ crystal.
We design composite controlled-phase gates, which compensate errors in the phase of a single gate. The errors can be of various nature, such as relative, absolute or both. We present composite sequences which are robust to relative errors up to the 6th order, with the number of the constituent gates growing just linearly with the desired accuracy, and we describe a method to achieve even higher accuracy. We show that the absolute error can be canceled entirely with only two gates. We describe an ion-trap implementation of our composite gates, in which simultaneous cancellation of the error in …
Characteristic dips appear in the coherence traces of a probe qubit when dynamical decoupling (DD) is applied in synchrony with the precession of target nuclear spins, forming the basis for nanoscale nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The frequency of the microwave control pulses is chosen to match the qubit transition but this can be detuned from resonance by experimental errors, hyperfine coupling intrinsic to the qubit, or inhomogeneous broadening. The detuning acts as an additional static field which is generally assumed to be completely removed in Hahn echo and DD experiments. Here we demo…
The proposal for quantum computing with rare-earth-ion qubits in inorganic crystals makes use of the inhomogeneous broadening of optical transitions in the ions to associate individual qubits with ions responding to radiation in selected frequency channels. We show that a class of Gaussian composite pulses and complex sech pulses provide accurate qubit pi-rotations, which are at the same time channel selective on a 5 MHz frequency scale and tolerant to 0.5 MHz deviations of the transition frequency of ions within a single channel. Rotations in qubit space of arbitrary angles and phases are pro…
Entangling operations are among the most important primitive gates employed in quantum computing and it is crucial to ensure high-fidelity implementations as systems are scaled up. We experimentally realize and characterize a simple scheme to minimize errors in entangling operations related to the residual excitation of mediating bosonic oscillator modes that both improves gate robustness and provides scaling benefits in larger systems. The technique employs discrete phase shifts in the control field driving the gate operation, determined either analytically or numerically, to ensure all modes…
We introduce a method for detection of chiral molecules using sequences of three pulses driving a closed-loop three-state quantum system. The left- and right-handed enantiomers have identical optical properties (transition frequencies and transition dipole moments) with the only difference being the sign of one of the couplings. We identify twelve different sequences of resonant pulses for which chiral resolution with perfect contrast occurs. In all of them the first and third pulses are $π/2$-pulses and the middle pulse is a $π$-pulse. In addition, one of the three pulses must have a phase sh…
We study the performance of composite pulses in the presence of time-varying control noise on a single qubit. These protocols, originally devised only to correct for static, systematic errors, are shown to be robust to time-dependent non-Markovian noise in the control field up to frequencies as high as ~10% of the Rabi frequency. Our study combines a generalized filter-function approach with asymptotic dc-limit calculations to give a simple analytic framework for error analysis applied to a number of composite-pulse sequences relevant to nuclear magnetic resonance as well as quantum informatio…
The sensitivity of a practical quantum magnetometer is challenged by both inhomogeneous coupling between sensors and environment and errors in quantum control. Based on the physical criteria of modern quantum sensing, we present a robust and effective composite-pulse for high fidelity operation against inhomogeneous broadening of sensor and control errors via optimized modulation of control field. Such a technique is verified on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond to keep almost perfect operation up to a detuning as larger as $110\%$. The sensitivity of the magnetometer with NV center ense…
The purpose of this paper is to investigate some properties through a three-level $Ξ$-type atom interacting with a two-mode field. We test this system in the presence of the photon assisted atomic phase damping, detuning parameter and Kerr nonlinearity. Also, the coupling parameter modulated to be time-dependent. The problem solution of this model is given by using the Schrődinger equation when the atom and the field are initially prepared in the excited state and coherent state, respectively. We used the results to calculate some aspects such as atomic population inversion and concurrence. Th…
Probing an atomic resonance without disturbing it is an ubiquitous issue in physics. This problem is critical in high-accuracy spectroscopy or for the next generation of atomic optical clocks. Ultra-high resolution frequency metrology requires sophisticated interrogation schemes and robust protocols handling pulse length errors and residual frequency detuning offsets . This review reports recent progress and perspective in such schemes, using sequences of composite laser-pulses tailored in pulse duration, frequency and phase, inspired by NMR techniques and quantum information processing. We discuss procedures for error-tolerant spin control in environments that permit transient, large-angle reorientation of magnetic bias field. Short sequences of pulsed, non-resonant magnetic field pulses in a laboratory-frame meridional plane are derived. These are shown to have band-pass excitation properties comparable to established amplitude-modulated, resonant pulses used in high, static-field magnetic resonance. Using these meridional pulses, we demonstrate robust $z$ inversion in proton ($^{1}$H) nuclear magnetic resonance near earth's field.
We introduce a method to suppress unwanted transition channels, even without knowing their couplings, and achieve perfect population transfer in multistate quantum systems by the application of composite pulse sequences. Unwanted transition paths may be present due to imperfect light polarization, stray electromagnetic fields, misalignment of quantization axis, spatial inhomogeneity of trapping fields, off-resonant couplings, etc. Compensation of simultaneous deviations in polarization, pulse area, and detuning is demonstrated. The accuracy, the flexibility and the robustness of this technique…
We introduce a quantum control technique using polychromatic pulse sequences (PPS), consisting of pulses with different carrier frequencies, i.e. different detunings with respect to the qubit transition frequency. We derive numerous PPS, which generate broadband, narrowband, and passband excitation profiles for different target transition probabilities. This makes it possible to create high-fidelity excitation profiles which are either (i) robust to deviations in the experimental parameters, which is attractive for quantum computing, or (ii) more sensitive to such variations, which is attracti…
Many delayed-choice experiments based on Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI) have been thought and made to address the fundamental problem of wave-particle duality. Conventional wisdoms long hold that by inserting or removing the second beam splitter (BS2) in a controllable way, microscopic particles (photons, electrons, etc.) transporting within the MZI can lie in the quantum superposition of the wave and particle state as ψ=a_wψ_wave+a_pψ_particle. Here we present an alternative interpretation to these delayed-choice experiments. We notice that as all composite devices of MZI including BS2 ar…
A new class of atomic interferences using ultra-narrow optical transitions are pushing quantum engineering control to a very high level of precision for a next generation of sensors and quantum gate operations. In such context, we propose a new quantum engineering approach to Ramsey-Bordé interferometry introducing multiple composite laser pulses with tailored pulse duration, Rabi field amplitude, frequency detuning and laser phase-step. We explore quantum metrology with hyper-Ramsey and hyper-Hahn-Ramsey clocks below the $10^-18$ level of fractional accuracy by a fine tuning control of light …
Atom matterwave interferometry requires mirror and beamsplitter pulses that are robust to inhomogeneities in field intensity, magnetic environment, atom velocity and Zeeman sub-state. Pulse shapes determined using quantum control methods offer significantly improved interferometer performance by allowing broader atom distributions, larger interferometer areas and higher contrast. We have applied gradient ascent pulse engineering (GRAPE) to optimise the design of phase-modulated mirror pulses for a Mach-Zehnder light-pulse atom interferometer, with the aim of increasing fringe contrast when ave…

Here, we propose a new version of Ramsey-Bordé interferometry introducing arbitrary composite laser pulses with tailored pulse duration, Rabi field, detuning and phase-steps. We explore quantum metrology below the $10^{-18}$ level of fractional accuracy by a fine tuning control of light excitation parameters protecting ultra-narrow optical clock transitions against residual light-shift…
Quantum manipulation protocols for quantum sensors and quantum computation often require many single qubit rotations. However, the impact of phase noise in the field that performs the qubit rotations is often neglected or treated only for special cases. We present a general framework for calculating the impact of phase noise on the state of a qubit, as described by its equivalent Bloch vector. The analysis applies to any Bloch vector orientation, and any rotation axis azimuthal angle for both a single pulse, and pulse sequences. Experimental examples are presented for several special cases. We…
We study a one-dimensional spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg model with alternating Dzyaloshinskii- Moriya interaction, using the numerical Lanczos method. Recently, the ground state (GS) phase diagram of this model has been established using the bosonization approach and extensive density matrix renormalization group computations. Four quantum phases - saturated ferromagnetic (FM), Luttinger liquid (LL), and two (C1 and C2) gapped phases with composite structure of GS order, characterized by the coexistence of long-range alternating dimer, chirality and antiferromagnetic order have been identified. Her…
The controlled preparation of the excited state in a quantum emitter is a prerequisite for its usage as single-photon sources - a key building block for quantum technologies. In this paper we propose a coherent excitation scheme using off-resonant pulses. In the usual Rabi scheme, these pulses would not lead to a significant occupation. This is overcome by using a frequency modulated pulse to swing up the excited state population. The same effect can be obtained using two pulses with different strong detunings of the same sign. We theoretically analyze the applicability of the scheme to a semi…
