When faced with two nigh intractable problems in cosmology -- how to remove the original cosmological constant problem and how to parametrize modified gravity to explain current cosmic acceleration -- we can make progress by counterposing them. The well tempered solution to the cosmological constant through degenerate scalar field dynamics also relates disparate Horndeski gravity terms, making them contrapuntal. We derive the connection between the kinetic term $K$ and braiding term $G_3$ for shift symmetric theories (including the running Planck mass $G_4$), extending previous work on monomial or binomial dependence to polynomials of arbitrary finite degree. We also exhibit an example for an infinite series expansion. This contrapuntal condition greatly reduces the number of parameters needed to test modified gravity against cosmological observations, for these "golden" theories of gravity.
Well-tempering is a promising classical method of dynamically screening an arbitrarily large vacuum energy and generating a late-time, low energy de Sitter vacuum state. In this paper, we study for the first time self-tuning in teleparallel gravity and obtain well-tempered cosmological models in the teleparallel gravity analogue of Horndeski theory. This broadens the scope of well-tempered cosmology and teases the potentially far richer cosmological dynamics that could be anchored on teleperallel gravity. We expand the well-tempered recipe to its most general form so far and use it to search f…
Well tempering is one of the few classical field theory methods for solving the original cosmological constant problem, dynamically canceling a large (possibly Planck scale) vacuum energy and leaving the matter component intact, while providing a viable cosmology with late time cosmic acceleration and an end de Sitter state. We present the general constraints that variations of Horndeski gravity models with different combinations of terms must satisfy to admit an exact de Sitter spacetime that does not respond to an arbitrarily large cosmological constant. We explicitly derive several specific…
Well tempered cosmology provides a well defined path for obtaining cosmology with a low energy cosmic acceleration despite a high (Planck) energy cosmological constant $Λ$, through a scalar field dynamically canceling $Λ$. We explore relations between the mass scales entering the various Horndeski gravity terms, and focus on the cases of only one or only two mass scales, obtaining general solutions for the form of the action. The resulting cosmology can be natural and viable, and as one of the only paths to dealing with the cosmological constant problem it has a rationale to be a benchmark cos…
Zero point fluctuations of quantum fields should generate a large cosmological constant energy density in any spacetime. How then can we have anything other than de Sitter space without fine tuning? Well tempering -- dynamical cancellation of the cosmological constant using degeneracy within the field equations -- can replace a large cosmological constant with a much lower energy state. Here we give an explicit mechanism to obtain a Minkowski solution, replacing the cosmological constant with zero, and testing its attractor nature and persistence through a vacuum phase transition. We derive th…
Self tuning is one of the few methods for dynamically cancelling a large cosmological constant and yet giving an accelerating universe. Its drawback is that it tends to screen all sources of energy density, including matter. We develop a model that tempers the self tuning so the dynamical scalar field still cancels an arbitrary cosmological constant, including the vacuum energy through any high energy phase transitions, without affecting the matter fields. The scalar-tensor gravitational action is simple, related to cubic Horndeski gravity, with a nonlinear derivative interaction plus a tadpol…
We examine an approach to cosmology, known as Well-Tempering, that allows for a de Sitter phase whose expansion is independent of the cosmological constant. Starting from a generic scalar-tensor theory compatible with the recent gravitational wave observation, we impose the Well-Tempering conditions and derive a system that is capable of tuning away the cosmological constant within a sub-class of Horndeski theory, where the scalar has a canonical kinetic term and a general potential. This scenario improves upon the Fab-Four approach by allowing a standard fluid-cosmology before entering the de…
We analyze the science reach of a next generation galaxy redshift survey such as BigBOSS to fit simultaneously for time varying dark energy equation of state and time- and scale-dependent gravity. The simultaneous fit avoids potential bias from assuming $Λ$CDM expansion or general relativity and leads to only modest degradation in constraints. Galaxy bias, fit freely in redshift bins, is self calibrated by spectroscopic measurements of redshift space distortions and causes little impact. The combination of galaxy redshift, cosmic microwave background, and supernova distance data can deliver 5-…
We consider cosmological modelling in $f(R)$ theories of gravity, using both top-down and bottom-up constructions. The top-down models are based on Robertson-Walker geometries, and the bottom-up constructions are built by patching together sub-horizon-sized regions of perturbed Minkowski space. Our results suggest that these theories do not provide a theoretically attractive alternative to the standard general relativistic cosmology. We find that the only $f(R)$ theories that can admit an observationally viable weak-field limit have large-scale expansions that are observationally indistinguish…
Using redshift space distortion data, we perform model-independent reconstructions of the growth history of matter inhomogeneity in the expanding Universe using two methods: crossing statistics and Gaussian processes. We then reconstruct the corresponding history of the Universe background expansion and fit it to type Ia supernovae data, putting constraints on $(Ω_\mathrm{m,0},σ_{8,0})$. The results obtained are consistent with the concordance flat-$Λ$CDM model and General Relativity as the gravity theory given the current quality of the inhomogeneity growth data.
The effects of a nonminimally coupled curvature-matter model of gravity on a perturbed Minkowski metric are presented. The action functional of the model involves two functions $f^1(R)$ and $f^2(R)$ of the Ricci scalar curvature $R$. This work expands upon previous results, extending the framework developed there to compute corrections up to order $O(1/c^4)$ of the $00$ component of the metric tensor. It is shown that additional contributions arise due to both the non-linear form $f^1(R)$ and the nonminimal coupling $f^2(R)$, including exponential contributions that cannot be expressed as an e…
A novel, interesting class of scalar-tensor gravity theories is those with a limit on the field motion, where the scalar field either goes to a constant acceleration or stops accelerating and goes to a constant velocity. We combine these with the ability to dynamically cancel a high energy cosmological constant, e.g. through the well tempered or self tuning approaches. One can successfully have a cosmic expansion history with a matter dominated epoch and late time acceleration despite a large cosmological constant, although the late time de Sitter limit may be unstable. Pole models, such as in…
Many modified gravity theories are under consideration in cosmology as the source of the accelerated expansion of the universe and linear perturbation theory, valid on the largest scales, has been examined in many of these models. However, smaller non-linear scales offer a richer phenomenology with which to constrain modified gravity theories. Here, we consider the Hu-Sawicki form of $f(R)$ gravity and apply the post-Friedmann approach to derive the leading order equations for non-linear scales, i.e. the equations valid in the Newtonian-like regime. We reproduce the standard equations for the …
We discuss the advantages of using metric theories of gravity with curvature-matter couplings in order to construct a relativistic generalisation of the simplest version of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND), where Tully-Fisher scalings are valid for a wide variety of astrophysical objects. We show that these proposals are valid at the weakest perturbation order for trajectories of massive and massless particles (photons). These constructions can be divided into local and non-local metric theories of gravity with curvature-matter couplings. Using the simplest two local constructions in a FLRW …
We test Einstein gravity using cosmological observations of both expansion and structure growth, including the latest data from supernovae (Union2.1), CMB (WMAP7), weak lensing (CFHTLS) and peculiar velocity of galaxies (WiggleZ). We fit modified gravity parameters of the generalized Poisson equations simultaneously with the effective equation of state for the background evolution, exploring the covariances and model dependence. The results show that general relativity is a good fit to the combined data. Using a Pad{é} approximant form for the gravity deviations accurately captures the time an…
The bimetric generalization of general relativity has been proven to be able to give an accelerated background expansion consistent with observations. Apart from the energy densities coupling to one or both of the metrics, the expansion will depend on the cosmological constant contribution to each of them, as well as the three parameters describing the interaction between the two metrics. Even for fixed values of these parameters can several possible solutions, so called branches, exist. Different branches can give similar background expansion histories for the observable metric, but may have …
In this work, we use a combined approach of Hubble parameter data together with redshift-space-distortion $(fσ_8)$ data, which together are used to reconstruct the teleparallel gravity (TG) Lagrangian via Gaussian processes (GP). The adopted Hubble data mainly comes from cosmic chronometers, while for the Type Ia supernovae data we use the latest jointly calibrated Pantheon compilation. Moreover, we consider two main GP covariance functions, namely the squared-exponential and Cauchy kernels in order to show consistency (to within 1$σ$ uncertainties). The core results of this work are the numer…
A generalization of the Hawking-Hayward quasilocal mass to scalar-tensor gravity is compared, in vacuo and for asymptotically flat stationary geometries, with a recent multipole expansion of the gravitational field. The quasilocal mass seen at spatial infinity coincides with the monopole term, lending credibility to this construct.
Just as big bang nucleosynthesis allows us to probe the expansion rate when the temperature of the universe was around 1 MeV, the measurement of gravity waves from electroweak scale first order phase transitions may allow us to probe the expansion rate when the temperature of the universe was at the electroweak scale. We compute the simple transformation rule for the gravity wave spectrum under the scaling transformation of the Hubble expansion rate. We then apply this directly to the scenario of quintessence kination domination and show how gravity wave spectra would shift relative to LISA an…
We show that within the class of f(R) gravity theories, FLRW power-law perfect fluid solutions only exist for R^n gravity. This significantly restricts the set of exact cosmological solutions which have similar properties to what is found in standard General Relativity.
We show that the cosmological phase transition from the first accelerated expansion in the early universe to the second accelerated expansion over the intermediate decelerated expansion is possible in the HL gravity without the ``detailed balance'' condition if the dark scalar energy density is assumed to be negative. Moreover, we obtain various evolutions depending on the scale factor and the expansion rate. Finally, we discuss the existence of the minimum scale in connection with the singularity free condition.
In this paper we study gauge-invariant metric fluctuations from a Noncompact Kaluza-Klein (NKK) theory of gravity in a de Sitter expansion. We recover the well known result $δρ/ρ\simeq 2Φ$, obtained from the standard 4D semiclassical approach to inflation. The spectrum for these fluctuations should be dependent of the fifth (spatial-like) coordinate.
We investigate the structure of halos in the sDGP (self-accelerating branch of the Dvali-Gavadadze-Porrati braneworld gravity) model and the galileon modified gravity model on the basis of the static and spherically symmetric solutions of the collisionless Boltzmann equation, which reduce to the singular isothermal sphere model and the King model in the limit of Newtonian gravity. The common feature of these halos is that the density of a halo in the outer region is larger (smaller) in the sDGP (galileon) model, respectively, in comparison with Newtonian gravity. This comes from the suppressio…

We perform a fully nonlinear analysis of superhorizon perturbation in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity, based on the gradient expansion method. We present a concrete expression for the solution of gravity equations up to the second order in the gradient expansion, and prove that the solution can be extended to any order. The result provides yet another example for analogue of the Vainshtein effect: the nonlinear solution is regular in the limit $λ\to 1$ and recovers general relativity coupled to dark matter at low energy. Finally, we propose a definition of nonlinear curvature perturbation ${\cal R}$ i…
n-DBI gravity explicitly breaks Lorentz invariance by the introduction of a unit time-like vector field, thereby giving rise to an extra (scalar) degree of freedom. We look for observational consequences of this mode in two setups. Firstly, we compute the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) expansion of the metric to first post-Newtonian order. Surprisingly, we find that the PPN parameters are exactly the same as in General Relativity (GR), and no preferred-frame effects are produced. In particular this means that n-DBI gravity is consistent with all GR solar system experimental tests. We discus…
The surface gravity of any Killing horizon, in any spacetime dimension, can be interpreted as a local, two-dimensional expansion rate seen by freely falling observers when they cross the horizon. Any two-dimensional congruence of geodesics invariant under the Killing flow can be used to define this expansion, provided that the observers have unit Killing energy.
The one loop UV divergences of Hilbert-Einstein gravity with a cosmological constant and spin 0, 1/2 and 1 matter are computed making use of a covariant derivative expansion and functional methods. For this purpose the transformation that yields the covariant derivative is extended to include a dynamical metric and the expansion in the fields themselves is made covariant which is relevant for the effective action due to the non-linear character of gravity
The expansion law proposed by Padmanabhan suggests that the evolution of the volume of the horizon is due to the difference between the degrees of freedom on the horizon and the degrees of freedom in the bulk enclosed by the horizon. In formulating this law, Padmanabhan used the temperature, $T=H/2π$, for a dynamical expansion. In this work, we modified the expansion law using Kodama-Hayward temperature, the dynamical temperature, for the horizon, first in (3+1) Einstein's gravity and extended it to higher order gravity theories such as (n+1) Einstein gravity, Gauss-Bonnet gravity, and more ge…
Here we propose the extended modified gravity theory named as $f(R,G,\mathcal{T})$ gravity where $R$ is the Ricci scalar, $G$ is the Gauss-Bonnet invariant and $\mathcal{T}$ is the trace of the stress-energy tensor. We derive the gravitational field equations in $f(R,G,\mathcal{T})$ gravity by taking least action principle. Next we construct the $f(R,G,\mathcal{T})$ in terms of $R$, $G$ and $\mathcal{T}$ in de Sitter as well as power law expansion. We also construct $f(R,G,\mathcal{T})$ if the expansion follows the finite time future singulary (big rip singularity). We investigate the energy c…
It has shown that the accelerated expansion of the FRW Universe can be explained as the quest towards the holographic equipartition ($N_{sur} = N_{bulk}$), satisfies the expansion law $\frac{dV}{dt} = l_{P}^{2} \left( N_{sur} - εN_{bulk} \right)$, from which one can derive the Friedmann equation of the FRW Universe in Einstein gravity \cite{paddy2012jun}. We introduce a generic derivation of the expansion law from the generalized first law of thermodynamics $-dE=TdS$ and $dE=TdS + WdV$. The generic derivation provides an expression for $N_{sur}$ in terms of entropy $S$ and the expansion law co…
Dynamical analysis of spherically symmetric collapsing star surrounding in locally anisotropic environment with expansion-free condition is presented in $f(R,T)$ gravity, where $R$ corresponds to Ricci scalar and $T$ stands for the trace of energy momentum tensor. The modified field equations and evolution equations are reconstructed in the framework of $f(R,T)$ gravty. In order to acquire the collapse equation we implement the perturbation on all matter variables and dark source components comprising the viable $f(R,T)$ model. The instability range is described in Newtonian and post-Newtonian…
A gravitational field model based on two symmetric tensors, $g_{μν}$ and $\tilde{g}_{μν}$, is presented. In this model, new matter fields are added to the original matter fields, motivated by an additional symmetry ($\tildeδ$ symmetry). We call them $\tildeδ$ matter fields. We find that massive particles do not follow geodesics, while trajectories of massless particles are null geodesics of an effective metric. Then we study the Cosmological case, where we get an accelerated expansion of the Universe without dark energy.
In this paper, we have considered the heat engine and Joule-Thomson expansion for the charged AdS black hole in the context of the non-linear electrodynamics and massive gravity. For the black hole heat engine, we obtained the analytical expression for the efficiency in terms of either the entropies or the temperatures and pressures in various limits. For the Joule-Thomson expansion of the black hole, we derived the isenthalpic curves in $T-P$ diagram, the Joule-Thomson coefficient, and the inversion curves. We also indicated in detail the effects of the non-linear electrodynamics and massive …
We study the expansion law of the universe dominated by the oscillating scalar field with non-minimal derivative coupling to gravity as G^{μν} \partial_μ ϕ\partial_ν ϕ. In this system the Hubble parameter oscillates with a frequency of the effective mass of the scalar field, which formerly caused a difficulty in analyzing how the universe expands. We find an analytical solution for power law potentials and interpret the solution in an intuitive way by using a new invariant of the system. As a result, we find marginally accelerated expansion for the quadratic potential and no accelerated expans…
We present a general framework to systematically study the derivative expansion of asymptotically safe quantum gravity. It is based on an exact decoupling and cancellation of different modes in the Landau limit, and implements a correct mode count as well as a regularisation based on geometrical considerations. It is applicable independent of the truncation order. To illustrate the power of the framework, we discuss the quartic order of the derivative expansion and its fixed point structure as well as physical implications.
The Parametrized Post-Newtonian expansion of gravitational theories with a scalar field coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant is performed and confrontation of such theories with Solar system experiments is discussed.
We present a fully nonlinear study of long wavelength cosmological perturbations within the framework of the projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity, coupled to a single scalar field. Adopting the gradient expansion technique, we explicitly integrate the dynamical equations up to any order of the expansion, then restrict the integration constants by imposing the momentum constraint. While the gradient expansion relies on the long wavelength approximation, amplitudes of perturbations do not have to be small. When the $λ\to 1$ limit is taken, the obtained nonlinear solutions exhibit a continuous beh…
We introduce a new loop expansion that provides a resolution of the identity in the Hilbert space of loop quantum gravity on a fixed graph. We work in the bosonic representation obtained by the canonical quantization of the spinorial formalism. The resolution of the identity gives a tool for implementing the projection of states in the full bosonic representation onto the space of solutions to the Gauss and area matching constraints of loop quantum gravity. This procedure is particularly efficient in the semiclassical regime, leading to explicit expressions for the loop expansions of coherent,…
We show that the recently suggested explanations of cosmic acceleration by the modification of gravity at small curvature suffer violent instabilities and strongly disagree with the known properties of gravitational interactions.
We revisit the manifestly covariant large $c$ expansion of General Relativity, $c$ being the speed of light. Assuming the relativistic connection has no pole in $c^{-2}$, this expansion is known to reproduce Newton-Cartan gravity and a covariant version of Post-Newtonian corrections to it. We show that relaxing this assumption leads to the inclusion of twistless torsion in the effective non-relativistic theory. We argue that the resulting TTNC theory is an effective description of a non-relativistic regime of General Relativity that extends Newtonian physics by including strong gravitational t…
We show in a fully covariant way that, there exist a class of $f(R)$ models for which a shear-free, almost FLRW universe can expand and rotate at the same time .
We investigate if a recently introduced formulation of general relativity on a Weyl-integrable geometry, contains cosmological solutions exhibiting acceleration in the present cosmic expansion. We derive the general conditions to have acceleration in the expansion of the universe and obtain a particular solution for the Weyl scalar field describing a cosmological model for the present time in concordance with the data combination Planck + WP + BAO + SN.
We construct finite- and infinite-dimensional non-relativistic extensions of the Newton-Hooke and Carroll (A)dS algebras using the algebra expansion method, starting from the (anti-)de Sitter relativistic algebra in D dimensions. These algebras are also shown to be embedded in different affine Kac-Moody algebras. In the three-dimensional case, we construct Chern-Simons actions invariant under these symmetries. This leads to a sequence of non-relativistic gravity theories, where the simplest examples correspond to extended Newton-Hooke and extended (post-)Newtonian gravity together with their C…
In this paper, the Joule{Thomson expansion of Born{Infeld AdS black holes in the consistent Aoki{Gorji{Mukohyama theory of 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity is studied in the extended phase space. We further analyze the effect of parameters αand βon the inversion curves and plot the inversion and isenthalpic curves in the T-P plane, which can determine the cooling-heating regions.
Instead of the work \cite{1} which in according to the Lovelock theorem it could not applicable for all types of 4D curved spacetimes of Einstein Gauss Bonnet (EGB) gravity, authors of the work \cite{2} applied break of diffeomorphism property to present a consistent EGB gravity theory. In this work we use the latter model by adding a nonlinear electromagnetic field lagrangian density to study affects of GB coupling constant into the thermodynamic phase transition and Joule Thomson (JT) adiabatic expansion of a 4D $dS/AdS$ GB Bardeen black hole.
In this paper, we extend Joule-Thomson expansion to the low-dimensional regime in rainbow gravity by considering the rainbow rotating BTZ metric in the (2+1)-dimensional spacetime. After the metric of the black hole is obtained, we get the Joule-Thomson expansion of the black hole, including the Joule-Thomson coefficient, inversion curves, and isenthalpic curves. We find that a rainbow rotating BTZ black hole does not have $P-V$ critical behavior. The effects of rainbow gravity are to slow down the trend of the increase of the Joule-Thomson coefficient and make its zero point larger. Moreover,…
In this paper, we present novel and known non-relativistic and ultra-relativistic spin-3 algebras, by considering the Lie algebra expansion method. We start by applying the expansion procedure using different semigroups to the spin-3 extension of the AdS algebra, leading to spin-3 extensions of known non-relativistic and ultra-relativistic algebras. We then generalize the procedure considering an infinite-dimensional semigroup, which allows to obtain a spin-3 extension of two new infinite families of the Newton-Hooke type and AdS-Carroll type. We also present the construction of the gravity th…
For the description of the Universe expansion, compatible with observational data, a model of modified gravity - Lovelock gravity with dilaton - is investigated. D-dimensional space with 3- and (D-4)-dimensional maximally symmetric subspaces is considered. Space without matter and space with perfect fluid are under test. In various forms of the theory under way (third order without dilaton and second order - Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity - with dilaton and without it) stationary, power-law, exponential and exponent-of-exponent form cosmological solutions are obtained. Last two forms include so…
In this Thesis, we treat the problem of the existence of generic perturbations of the regular and singular state in higher-order gravity in cases of vacuum and radiation models that derives from the lagrangian $R+εR^2$. We show that there is a regular state of the theory in vacuum in the form of a formal series expansion having the same number of free functions as those required for a general solution of the theory, while this is not true for the case of radiation. This means that there exists an open set in the space of analytic initial data of the theory in vacuum that leads to a regular sol…
We discuss the Palatini formulation of modified gravity including a Yukawa-like term. It is shown that in this formulation, the Yukawa term offers an explanation for the current exponential accelerated expansion of the universe and reduces to the standard Friedmann cosmology in the appropriate limit. We then discuss the scalar-tensor formulation of the model as a metric theory and show that the Yukawa term predicts a power-law acceleration at late-times. The Newtonian limit of the theory is also discussed in context of the Palatini formalism.
Wormholes are considered both from the Wheeler deWitt equation, as well as from the field equations in the Euclidean background of Roberson Walker mini-superspace in $R^2$ gravity. Quantum wormhole satisfies Hawking Page wormhole boundary condition in the Euclidean background of mini-superspace, however, in the Lorentzian background wave functional turns to the usual oscillatory function. The Euclidean field equations for $κ=0, \pm1$ lead to the wormhole configuration; as well as oscillating universe in Euclidean time $τ$. The oscillating universe is equivalent to expanding universe under anal…
A higher dimensional modified gravity theory with an action that includes dimensionally continued Euler-Poincaré forms up to second order in curvatures is considered. The variational field equations are derived. Matter in the universe at large scales is modeled by a fluid satisfying an equation of state with dimensional dichotomy. We study solutions that describe higher dimensional steady state cosmologies with constant volume for which the three dimensional external space is expanding at an accelerated rate while the (compact) internal space is contracting. We showed that the second order Eul…
In this paper we have derived the behavior of deceleration parameter with respect to redshift in context of f(R) gravity in vacuum using Taylor expansion of derivative of action. Here we have obtained that the two first terms in Taylor expansion may describe the late time acceleration which is appeared by SNeIa without need of dark energy and dark matter. Also we have derived that any other terms higher than z in Taylor expansion may describe main inflationary epoch in the early Universe. We have shown that f(R) gravity may cover all the dynamical history of the Universe from the beginning to …
The accelerated expansion of the universe is the most debatable cosmological scenario in the last two decades. Looking for the proper explanation of this scenario, researchers have presented a lot of proposals to discuss it. However, somehow, most of the proposal seems incomplete and needs to improve for a better representation of the universe. Therefore, this thesis aims to investigate some problems searching for an accurate explanation of the accelerated scenario of the universe...
