The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) has been observed with the UltraViolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) instrument onboard the AstroSat Observatory. The M31 sky area was covered with 19 fields, in multiple UV filters per field, over the period of 2017 to 2019. The entire galaxy was observed in the FUV F148W filter, and more than half observed in the NUV filters. A new calibration and data processing is described which improves the astrometry and photometry of the UVIT data. The high spatial resolution of UVIT ($\simeq$1 arcsec) and new astrometry calibration ($\simeq$0.2 arcsec) allow identification of UVIT sources with stars, star clusters, X-ray sources, and other source types within M31 to a much better level than previously possible. We present new results from matching UVIT sources with stars measured as part of the Pan-chromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury project in M31.
The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) is an object of ongoing study with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on AstroSat. UVIT FUV and NUV photometry is carried out here for a set of 239 clusters in the NE disk and bulge of M31 which overlap with the HST/PHAT survey. Padova stellar models were applied to derive ages, masses, metallicities and extinctions for 170 clusters. The ages show a narrow peak at $\sim$4 Myr and a broad peak around 100 Myr. log(Z/Z$_{\odot}$) values are mostly between $-0.3$ and $+0.3$. The 7 clusters in the bulge are low metallicity and high mass. Most clusters are in the spi…
Simulations expect an enhanced star-formation and active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity during galaxy mergers, which can lead to formation of binary/dual AGN. AGN feedback can enhance or suppress star-formation. We have carried out a pilot study of a sample of 10 dual nuclei galaxies with AstroSat's Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). Here, we present the initial results for two sample galaxies (Mrk 739, ESO 509) and deep multi-wavelength data of another galaxy (Mrk 212). UVIT observations have revealed signatures of positive AGN feedback in Mrk 739 and Mrk 212, and negative feedback in ESO …
We report the discovery of a nearby large, diffuse galaxy that shows star formation, using Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) far-UV observations, archival optical data from Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) and Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey (DECaLS), and InfraRed Survey Facility (IRSF) near-infrared observations. The galaxy was not detected earlier due to its superposition with the background galaxy, NGC 6902A. They were together mistakenly classified as an interacting system. NGC 6902A is at a redshift of 0.05554, but MUSE observations indicate that the interacting tail is a sep…
Star formation in galaxies is a hierarchical process with a wide range of scales from smaller clusters to larger stellar complexes. Here, we present an ultra-violet imaging study of the nearby flocculent spiral galaxy NGC 7793, observed with the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). We find that the disk scale-length estimated in Far-UV (2.64$\pm$0.16 kpc) is larger than that in Near-UV (2.21$\pm$0.21 kpc) and optical (1.08 kpc), which supports the inside-out growth scenario of the galaxy disk. The star-forming UV disk is also found to be contained within the extent of H~I gas of column densi…
Secular and environmental effects play a significant role in regulating the star formation rate and hence the evolution of the galaxies. Since UV flux is a direct tracer of the star formation in galaxies, the UltraViolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard ASTROSAT enables us to characterize the star forming regions in a galaxy with its remarkable spatial resolution. In this study, we focus on the secular evolution of NGC 628, a spiral galaxy in the local universe. We exploit the resolution of UVIT to resolve up to $\sim$ 63 pc in NGC 628 for identification and characterization of the star formin…
We report the discovery of a new dwarf galaxy, Andromeda XXVIII, using data from the recently-released SDSS DR8. The galaxy is a likely satellite of Andromeda, and, at a separation of $365^{+17}_{-1}$ kpc, would be one of the most distant of Andromeda's satellites. Its heliocentric distance is $650^{+150}_{-80}$ kpc, and analysis of its structure and luminosity show that it has an absolute magnitude of $M_V = -8.5^{+0.4}_{-1.0}$ and half-light radius of $r_h = 210^{+60}_{-50}$ pc, similar to many other faint Local Group dwarfs. With presently-available imaging we are unable to determine if the…
We present a study of star forming regions and its demographics in the nearby dwarf irregular galaxy WLM using the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) multi band observations in three filters F148W, N245M and N263M. We find that the UV emission is extended at least up to 1.7 kpc, with the NUV emission more extended than the FUV. We create UV color maps ((F148W$-$N245M) and (F148W$-$N263M)) to study the temperature morphology of young stellar complexes with the help of theoretical models. We identify several complexes with temperature T $>$ 17500 K which are likely to be the OB associations p…
The Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard the AstroSat observatory has imaged the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) from 2017 to 2019 in FUV and NUV with the high spatial resolution of ~1". The survey covered the large sky area of M31 with a set of observations (Fields) each 28 arcminutes in diameter. Field 1 was observed in two epochs with the F148W filter, separated by 1133 days (~3.10 years). The 6.4 kpc diameter Field 1 (at the distance of M31) includes a substantial part of the inner spiral arms of the galaxy. We identify UVIT sources in both epochs of Field 1 and obtain catalogs of sources t…
Star forming dwarf galaxies in the local volume are diverse and are ideal test beds to understand details of star formation in a variety of environments. Here, we present a deep FUV imaging study of a nearby dwarf irregular galaxy IC 2574 using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). We identified 419 FUV bright regions with radii between 15 - 285 pc in the galaxy and found that 28.6\% of them to be located in H~I shells, 12.6\% inside holes and 60.1\% to be away from the holes. The H~I column density is found to be more than $10^{21} cm^{-2}$ for 82.3\% of the identified regions. 30 out of …
To unveil a progenitor of the Andromeda Giant Stellar Stream, we investigate the interaction between an accreting satellite galaxy and the Andromeda Galaxy using an $N$-body simulation. A comprehensive parameter study with 247 models is performed by varying size and mass distribution of the progenitor dwarf galaxy. We show that the binding energy of the progenitor is the crucial parameter in reproducing the Andromeda Giant Stellar Stream and the shell-like structures surrounding the Andromeda Galaxy. As a result of the simulations, the progenitor must satisfy a simple scaling relation between …
Observations of globular clusters in dwarf galaxies can be used to study a variety of topics, including the structure of dark matter halos and the history of vigorous star formation in low-mass galaxies. We report on the properties of the faint globular cluster (M_V ~ -3.4) in the M31 dwarf galaxy Andromeda I. This object adds to the growing population of low-luminosity Local Group galaxies that host single globular clusters.
We present imaging and photometric studies of the radio galaxy NGC 1316 (Fornax~A) using high spatial resolution near-ultraviolet (NUV) and far-ultraviolet (FUV) imaging telescopes of the first Indian multi-wavelength space observatory {\it AstroSat}. The residual maps of UV emission obtained from the subtraction of smooth models witness peculiar features within the central few kpc (1-2 kpc) region. The spatial correspondence between the radio emission maps and FUV imaging study reveal that the UV emitting sources are displaced away from the centre by the AGN outburst (radio jet). The presence…
We present a far-UV (FUV) and near-UV (NUV) imaging study of recent star formation in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2336 using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). NGC 2336 is nearly face-on in morphology and has a multi-armed, branching spiral structure which is associated with star forming regions distributed mainly along the spiral arms and the co-rotation ring around the bar. We have identified 72 star forming knots in the disk, of which only two are in the inter-arm regions and 6 in the co-rotation ring. We have tabulated their positions and estimated their luminosities, sizes, star f…
The cold dark matter (CDM) cosmology, which is the standard theory of the structure formation in the universe, predicts that the outer density profile of dark matter halos decreases with the cube of distance from the center. However, so far not much effort has examined this hypothesis. In the halo of the Andromeda galaxy (M31), large-scale stellar structures detected by the recent observations provide a potentially suitable window to investigate the mass--density distribution of the dark matter halo. We explore the density structure of the dark matter halo in M31 using an N-body simulation of …
We present the first detection of a 6.7 GHz Class II methanol (CH3OH) maser in the Andromeda galaxy (M31). The CH3OH maser was found in a Very Large Array (VLA) survey during the fall of 2009. We have confirmed the methanol maser with the new Expanded VLA (EVLA), in operation since March 2010, but were unsuccessful in detecting a water maser at this location. A direct application for this methanol maser is the determination of the proper motion of M31, such as was obtained with water masers in M33 and IC10 previously. Unraveling the three-dimensional velocity of M31 would solve for the biggest…
We determine the detection limits of the search for dwarf galaxies in the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey (PAndAS) using the algorithm developed by the PAndAS team. The recovery fractions of artificial dwarf galaxies are, as expected, a strong function of physical size and luminosity and, to a lesser extent, distance. We show that these recovery fractions vary strongly with location in the surveyed area because of varying levels of contamination from both the Milky Way foreground stars and the stellar halo of Andromeda. We therefore provide recovery fractions that are a function of size, l…
The Giant Stellar Stream (GSS) is a prominent tidal feature in the halo of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), representing the ongoing destruction of a satellite galaxy. In this paper, we investigate the formation of the GSS through detailed numerical simulations of the tidal disruption of a progenitor system. Assuming that the stream was created in a single merger event between M31 and a dwarf spheroidal galaxy with stellar mass of $10^{9}M_{\odot}$, we successfully reproduce the dynamical properties of the GSS. As the metallicity distribution along the stream has been well determined from the obser…
We present deep imaging of the ultra-diffuse Andromeda XIX dwarf galaxy from the Advance Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope which resolves its stellar populations to below the oldest main sequence turn-off. We derive a full star formation history for the galaxy using MATCH, and find no evidence of star formation in the past 8 Gyr. We calculate a quenching time of $τ_{90}=9.7\pm0.2$~Gyr, suggesting Andromeda~XIX ceased forming stars very early on. This early quenching, combined with its extremely large half-light radius, low density dark matter halo and lower than expected metalli…

We analyze the kinematics of Andromeda's disk as a function of stellar age by using photometry from the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury (PHAT) survey and spectroscopy from the Spectroscopic and Photometric Landscape of Andromeda's Stellar Halo (SPLASH) survey. We use HI 21-cm and CO ($\rm J=1 \rightarrow 0$) data to examine the difference between the deprojected rotation velocity of the gas and that of the stars. We divide the stars into four stellar age bins, from shortest lived to longest lived: massive main sequence stars (0.03 Gyr), more luminous intermediate mass asymptotic giant b…
A large fraction of the dwarf satellites orbiting the Andromeda galaxy are surprisingly aligned in a thin, extended and apparently kinematically coherent planar structure. Such a structure is not easily found in simulations based on the Cold Dark Matter model (ΛCDM). Using 21 high resolution cosmological simulations we analyse the kinematics of planes of satellites similar to the one around Andromeda. We find good agreement when co-rotation is characterized by the line-of-sight velocity. At the same time, when co-rotation is inferred by the angular momenta of the satellites, the planes are in …
As the closest $L^{\ast}$ galaxy to our own Milky Way, the Andromeda galaxy (M31) is an ideal laboratory for studies of galaxy evolution. The AMIGA project has recently provided observations of the cool ($T\sim10^4$ K) phase of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of M31, using HST/COS absorption spectra along $\sim40$ background QSO sightlines, located up to and beyond the galaxy virial radius. Based on these data, and by the means of semi-analytic models and Bayesian inference, we provide here a physical description of the origin and dynamics of the cool CGM of M31. We investigate two competing s…
Dorado is a nearby (17.69 Mpc) strongly evolving galaxy group in the Southern Hemisphere. We are investigating the star formation in this group. This paper provides a FUV imaging of NGC 1533, IC 2038 and IC 2039, which form a substructure, south west of the Dorado group barycentre. FUV CaF2-1 UVIT-Astrosat images enrich our knowledge of the system provided by GALEX. In conjunction with deep optical wide-field, narrow-band Halpha and 21-cm radio images we search for signatures of the interaction mechanisms looking in the FUV morphologies and derive the star formation rate. The shape of the FUV …
We report the results of a Green Bank Telescope survey for water masers, ammonia (1,1) and (2,2), and the H66-alpha recombination line toward 506 luminous compact 24 micron-emitting regions in the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). We include the 206 sources observed in the Darling (2011) water maser survey for completeness. The survey was sensitive enough to detect any maser useful for ~10 microarcsecond/yr astrometry. No new water masers, ammonia lines, or H66-alpha recombination lines were detected individually or in spectral stacks reaching rms noise levels of ~3 mJy and ~0.2 mJy, respectively, in 3.…
We present the first results from an extended survey of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) using 41.1 h of observations by Spitzer-IRAC at 3.6 and 4.5$\,μ$m. This survey extends previous observations to the outer disc and halo, covering total lengths of 4$.\!\!^\circ$4 and 6$.\!\!^\circ$6 along the minor and major axes, respectively. We have produced surface brightness profiles by combining the integrated light from background-corrected maps with stellar counts from a new catalogue of point sources. Using auxiliary catalogues we have carried out a statistical analysis in colour-magnitude space to disc…
We report the discovery of a new dwarf galaxy, Andromeda XXIX, using data from the recently-released Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR8, and confirmed by Gemini North telescope Multi-Object Spectrograph imaging data. And XXIX appears to be a dwarf spheroidal galaxy, separated on the sky by a little more than 15 degrees from M31, with a distance inferred from the tip of the red giant branch of 730kpc+/-75kpc, corresponding to a three dimensional separation from M31 of between 205kpc and 227kpc (close to M31's virial radius). Its absolute magnitude, as determined by comparison to the red giant branch …
$\require{mediawiki-texvc}$ Supermassive black holes at the centre of active galactic nuclei (AGN) produce relativistic jets that can affect the star formation characteristics of the AGN hosts. Observations in the ultraviolet (UV) band can provide an excellent view of the effect of AGN jets on star formation. Here, we present a census of star formation properties in the Northern Star-forming Region (NSR) that spans about 20 kpc of the large radio source Centaurus A hosted by the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128. In this region, we identified 352 UV sources associated with Cen A using new obser…
The Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey is a survey of $>400$ square degrees centered on the Andromeda (M31) and Triangulum (M33) galaxies that has provided the most extensive panorama of a $L_\star$ galaxy group to large projected galactocentric radii. Here, we collate and summarise the current status of our knowledge of the substructures in the stellar halo of M31, and discuss connections between these features. We estimate that the 13 most distinctive substructures were produced by at least 5 different accretion events, all in the last 3 or 4 Gyrs. We suggest that a few of the substructures…

We analyze in detail the spatial distribution and kinematic properties of two different stellar populations in Andromeda II (And II) dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We obtained their detailed surface density maps, together with their radial density profiles. The two populations differ not only in age and metallicity, but also in their spatial distribution and kinematics. Old stars ($\gtrsim 11$ Gyr) follow a round distribution well fitted by truncated density profiles. These stars rotate around the projected optical major axis of the galaxy with line-of-sight velocities $v_{los}(r_h) = 16 \pm 3$ km s…
It is of broad interest for galaxy formation theory to carry out a full inventory of the numbers and properties of dwarf galaxies in the Local Volume, both satellites and isolated ones. Ultra-deep imaging in wide areas of the sky with small amateur telescopes can help to complete the census of these hitherto unknown low surface brightness galaxies, which cannot be detected by the current resolved stellar population and HI surveys. We report the discovery of Donatiello I, a dwarf spheroidal galaxy located one degree from the star Mirach (Beta And) in a deep image taken with an amateur telescope…
Tidal streams from existing and destroyed satellite galaxies populate the outer regions of the Andromeda galaxy (M31). This inhomogeneous debris can be studied without many of the obstacles that plague Milky Way research. We review the history of tidal stream research in M31, and in its main satellite galaxies. We highlight the numerous tidal streams observed around M31, some of which reside at projected distances of up to 120 kpc from the center of this galaxy. Most notable is the Giant Stellar Stream, a signature of the most recent significant accretion event in the M31 system. This event in…
Large-scale faint structure detected by the recent observations in the halo of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) provides an attractive window to explore the structure of outer cold dark matter (CDM) halo in M31. Using an N-body simulation of the interaction between an accreting satellite galaxy and M31, we investigate the mass density profile of the CDM halo. We find the sufficient condition of the outer density profile of CDM halo in M31 to reproduce the Andromeda giant stream and the shells at the east and west sides of M31. The result indicates that the density profile of the outer dark matter ha…
Our Milky Way provides a unique test case for galaxy evolution models, thanks to our privileged position within the Milky Way's disc. This position also complicates comparisons between the Milky Way and external galaxies, due to our inability to observe the Milky Way from an external point of view. Milky Way analog galaxies offer us a chance to bridge this divide by providing the external perspective that we otherwise lack. However, over-precise definitions of "analog" yield little-to-no galaxies, so it is vital to understand which selection criteria produce the most meaningful analog samples.…

Although the proximity of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) offers an opportunity to understand how mergers affect galaxies, uncertainty remains about M31's most important mergers. Previous studies focused individually on the giant stellar stream or the impact of M32 on M31's disk, thereby suggesting many substantial satellite interactions. Yet models of M31's disk heating and the similarity between the stellar populations of different tidal substructures in M31's outskirts both suggested a single large merger. M31's stellar halo (its outer low-surface-brightness regions) is built up from the tidal d…
We present a comparative multi-wavelength analysis of water maser-emitting regions and non-maser-emitting luminous 24 micron star-forming regions in the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) to identify the sites most likely to produce luminous water masers useful for astrometry and proper motion studies. Included in the analysis are Spitzer 24 micron photometry, Herschel 70 and 160 micron photometry, H$α$ emission, dust temperature, and star formation rate. We find significant differences between the maser-emitting and non-maser-emitting regions: water maser-emitting regions tend to be more IR-luminous and …
According to our current knowledge about physical and dynamical properties of the Milky Way-M31 system, it seems likely that these two galaxies will collide and eventually merge in a time very sensitive to initial conditions. Using the HiGPUs code, we have performed several numerical simulations to study the dynamics of the system, trying to define the role of indeterminacy in the present day observed relative velocities of the two galaxies and the time of the merger. At the same time, we have followed the dynamics of the two massive black holes sitting in the galactic centers, to check (withi…

Dark matter substructure around nearby galaxies provides an interesting opportunity for confusion-free indirect detection of dark matter. We calculate the boost over a smooth background distribution of dark matter for gamma-ray emission from dark matter self-annihilations in tidal structure in M31, assuming a cross-section inversely proportional to the relative velocities of the dark matter particles as proposed by the Sommerfeld effect. The low velocity of the material in the structure results in a significant increase in gamma-ray emission compared to both the background halo and the predict…
We present B and V time-series photometry of Andromeda XXV, the third galaxy in our program on the Andromeda's satellites, that we have imaged with the Large Binocular Cameras of the Large Binocular Telescope. The field of Andromeda XXV is found to contain 63 variable stars, for which we present light curves and characteristics of the light variation (period, amplitudes, variability type, mean magnitudes, etc.). The sample includes 58 RR Lyrae variables (46 fundamental-mode $-$ RRab, and 12 first-overtone $-$RRc, pulsators), three anomalous Cepheids, one eclipsing binary system and one unclass…
We have computed the Galactic Habitable Zones (GHZs) of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) based on the probability of terrestrial planet formation, which depends on the metallicity (Z) of the interstellar medium, and the number of formed stars per surface unit. The GHZ was therefore obtained from a chemical evolution model built to reproduce a precise metallicity gradient in the galactic disk, [O/H](r) $ = -0.015 \pm 0.003 dex kpc^{-1} x r(kpc) + 0.44 \pm 0.04 dex $. This gradient is the most probable when intrinsic scatter is present in the observational data. The chemical evolution model predicted …
We present new limits on the global shape of the dark matter halo in the Andromeda galaxy using and generalizing non-spherical mass models developed by Hayashi & Chiba and compare our results with theoretical predictions of cold dark matter (CDM) models. This is motivated by the fact that CDM models predict non-spherical virialized dark halos, which reflect the process of mass assembly in the galactic scale. Applying our models to the latest kinematic data of globular clusters and dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Andromeda halo, we find that the most plausible cases for Andromeda yield a prola…
