We reexamine the inverse Primakoff scattering of axions, whose scattering cross section depends on the distribution of electrons in target atoms. We evaluate it using a form factor computed with a relativistic Hartree-Fock wave function and compare it with the previous results obtained with those based on the screened Coulomb potential for the electrostatic field in the atom. We take xenon as an example for the target atom and show that the scattering cross section was overestimated by more than an order of magnitude for axions with $\lesssim O(10)$ keV energies, like solar axions. It is also found that inelastic scattering processes, in which the final state contains an excited or ionized atom, can be comparable or even be dominant when the size of momentum transfer is $\lesssim 1$ keV. For more energetic axions, on the other hand, the total scattering cross section is found to be well approximated by a simple expression and has little dependence on the atomic structure. As an application of this result, we consider supernova axions, whose energy is 10-100 MeV, and show that $O(1)$ inverse Primakoff events are expected for axions from a nearby supernova in the future neutrino experiments, which may warrant a more detailed study on the search strategy of this process.
The search for resonant absorption of the Primakoff solar axions by $^{169}$Tm nuclei have been performed. Such an absorption should lead to the excitation of low-lying nuclear energy level: $A+^{169}$Tm $\to ^{169}$Tm$^*$ $\to ^{169}$Tm$ + γ$ (8.41 keV). The Si(Li) detector and $^{169}$Tm target placed inside the low-background setup were used for that purpose. As a result, a new restriction on the axion-photon coupling and axion mass was obtained: $g_{Aγ}({GeV}^{-1})\cdot m_A(eV)\leq1.36\cdot10^{-5}$ (90% c.l.). In model of hadronic axion this restriction corresponds to the upper limit on ax…
We show that XENON1T and future liquid xenon (LXe) direct detection experiments are sensitive to axions through the standard $g_{aγ}aF\tilde{F}$ operators due to inverse-Primakoff scattering. This previously neglected channel significantly improves the sensitivity to the axion-photon coupling, with a reach extending to $g_{aγ} \sim 10^{-10}$ GeV$^{-1}$ for axion masses up to a keV, thereby extending into the region of heavier QCD axion models. This result modifies the couplings required to explain the XENON1T excess in terms of solar axions, opening a large region of $g_{aγ}$ - $m_a$ parameter…
It is assumed that axions exist and are created in the Sun by Primakoff conversion of photons in the Coulomb fields of nuclei. Detection rates are calculated in germanium detectors due to the coherent conversion of axions to photons in the lattice when the incident angle fulfills the Bragg condition for a given crystalline plane. The rates are correlated with the relative positions of the Sun and detector, yielding a characteristic recognizable sub-diurnal temporal pattern. A major experiment is proposed based on a large detector array.
Results are reported of an experimental search for the unique, rapidly varying temporal pattern of solar axions coherently converting into photons via the Primakoff effect in a single crystal germanium detector. This conversion is predicted when axions are incident at a Bragg angle with a crystalline plane. The analysis of approximately 1.94 kg.yr of data from the 1 kg DEMOS detector in Sierra Grande, Argentina, yields a new laboratory bound on axion-photon coupling of $g_{aγγ} < 2.7\cdot 10^{-9}$ GeV$^{-1}$, independent of axion mass up to ~ 1 keV.
In this paper we calculate the potential sensitivity of the CUORE detector to axions produced in the Sun through the Primakoff process and detected by the inverse coherent Bragg-Primakoff process. The conversion rate is calculated using density functional theory for the electron density and realistic expectations for the energy resolution and background of CUORE. Monte Carlo calculations for $5~$y$\times741~$kg=$3705~$kg y of exposure are analyzed using time correlation of individual events with the theoretical time-dependent counting rate and lead to an expected limit on the axion-photon coup…
Searches for pseudoscalar axion-like-particles (ALPs) typically rely on their decay in beam dumps or their conversion into photons in haloscopes and helioscopes. We point out a new experimental direction for ALP probes through their production via the Primakoff process or Compton-like scattering off of electrons or nuclei. We consider ALPs produced by the intense gamma ray flux available from megawatt-scale nuclear reactors at neutrino experiments through Primakoff-like or Compton-like channels. Low-threshold detectors in close proximity to the core will have visibility to ALP decays and inver…
Axion helioscopes search for solar axions and axion-like particles via inverse Primakoff conversion in strong laboratory magnets pointed at the Sun. While helioscopes can always measure the axion coupling to photons, the conversion signal is independent of the mass for axions lighter than around 0.02 eV. Masses above this value on the other hand have suppressed signals due to axion-photon oscillations which destroy the coherence of the conversion along the magnet. However, the spectral oscillations present in the axion conversion signal between these two regimes are highly dependent on the axi…
We study the evolution of axions interacting with primordial magnetic fields (PMFs) starting just from the QCD phase transition in the expanding universe. This interaction is owing to the Primakoff effect. Adopting the zero mode approximation for axions, we derive the system of equations for axions and magnetic fields, where the expansion of the universe and the spectra of magnetic fields are accounted for exactly. We find that the contribution of the Primakoff effect to the dynamics of axions and magnetic fields is rather weak. It confirms some previous estimates leading to analogous conclusi…
We show the existence of the strong inverse correlation between the temporal variations of the toroidal component of the magnetic field in the solar tachocline (the bottom of the convective zone) and the Earth magnetic field (the Y-component). The possibility that the hypothetical solar axions, which can transform into photons in external electric or magnetic fields (the inverse Primakoff effect), can be the instrument by which the magnetic field of the Sun convective zone modulates the magnetic field of the Earth is considered. We propose the axion mechanism of Sun luminosity and "solar dynam…
Dark matter axions may cause transitions between atomic states that differ in energy by an amount equal to the axion mass. Such energy differences are conveniently tuned using the Zeeman effect. It is proposed to search for dark matter axions by cooling a kilogram-sized sample to milliKelvin temperatures and count axion induced transitions using laser techniques. This appears an appropriate approach to axion dark matter detection in the $10^{-4}$ eV mass range.
The equations of electrodynamics are altered in the presence of a classical coherent axion dark matter background field, changing the dispersion relation for electromagnetic waves. Careful measurements of the frequency stability in sensitive atomic clocks could in principle provide evidence for such a background for $f_a \ge 10^7$ GeV. Turning on a background magnetic field might enhance these effects in a controllable way, and interferometric measurements might also be useful for probing the time-varying photon dispersion relation that results from a coherent cosmic axion background.
We present a brief overview of recently proposed detection schemes for axion, axion-like pseudoscalar particle and topological defect dark matter. We focus mainly on the possibility of using atomic and molecular systems for dark matter detection. For axions and axion-like particles, these methods are complementary probes to ongoing photon-axion interconversion experiments and astrophysical observations. For topological defects, these methods are complementary to conventional astrophysical search schemes based on gravitational signatures.
We calculate the total cross section for the production of photons from the scattering of axions by a strong inhomogeneous magnetic field in the form of a 2D delta-function, a cylindrical step function and a 2D Gaussian distribution, which can be approximately produced by a solenoidal current. The theoretical result is used to estimate the axion-photon conversion probability which could be expected in a reasonable experimental situation. The calculated conversion probabilities for QCD inspired axions are bigger by a factor of 2.67 (for the cylindrical step function case) than those derived by …
The possibility of axion detection by observing axion induced atomic excitations as suggested by Sikivie is discussed. The atom is cooled at low temperature and it is chosen to posses three levels. The first is the ground state, the second is completely empty chosen so that the energy difference between the two is close to the axion mass. Under the spin induced axion-electron interaction an electron is excited from the first to the second level. The presence of such an electron there can be confirmed by exciting it further via radiation of a suitably chosen photon energy to the appropriately s…
In the recent work arXiv:1809.02446, the authors proposed a new method measuring the electron oscillating electric dipole moment (eOEDM) using atomic magnetomaters. This eOEDM is induced by the interaction between the electron magnetic dipole moment, electric field and axion field. The result is sensitive to the axion-photon coupling according to [Hill, PRD 91, 111702 (2015)]. Here we want to describe that the same experimental method can be also sensitive to the axion-electron coupling according to [Alexander and Sims, PRD 98, 015011 (2018)]. In this article, we will show the corresponding se…
The possibility of detection of 5.5 MeV and 14.4 keV solar axions by observing axion-induced nuclear and atomic transitions is investigated. The presence of nuclear transitions between spin-orbit partners can be manifested by the subsequent de-excitation via gamma ray emissions. The transition rates can also be studied in the context of radiative axion absorption by a nucleus. The elementary interaction is obtained in the context of the axion-quark couplings predicted by existing axion models. Then these couplings will be transformed to the nucleon level utilizing reasonable existing models, w…
We calculate the additional force due to two-axion exchange acting in a sphere-disc geometry, used in experiments on measuring the gradient of the Casimir force. With this result, stronger constraints on the pseudoscalar coupling constants of an axion and axion-like particles to a proton and a neutron are obtained over the wide range of axion masses from 0.03mV to 1eV. Among the three experiments with Au-Au, Au-Ni and Ni-Ni boundary surfaces performed by means of dynamic atomic force microscope, major improving is achieved for the experiment with Au-Au test bodies. Here, the constraints obtain…
In non-hadronic axion models, where axions couple to electrons at tree level, the solar axion flux is completely dominated by the ABC reactions (Atomic recombination and deexcitation, Bremsstrahlung and Compton). In this paper the ABC flux is computed from available libraries of monochromatic photon radiative opacities (OP, LEDCOP and OPAS) by exploiting the relations between axion and photon emission cross sections. These results turn to be ~ 30% larger than previous estimates due to atomic recombination (free-bound electron transitions) and deexcitation (bound-bound), which where not previou…
The interaction of standard model's particles with the axionic Dark Matter field may generate oscillating nuclear electric dipole moments (EDMs), oscillating nuclear Schiff moments and oscillating nuclear magnetic quadrupole moments (MQMs) with a frequency corresponding to the axion's Compton frequency. Within an atom or a molecule an oscillating EDM, Schiff moment or MQM can drive transitions between atomic or molecular states. The excitation events can be detected, for example, via subsequent fluorescence or photoionization. Here we calculate the rates of such transitions. If the nucleus has…
The $μ$eV-mass axion is one of the most promising candidates for cold dark matter, and remains to be a well-motivated solution to the CP problem of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) via the Peccei-Quinn mechanism. In this paper, we propose a novel method to detect the dark-matter axions in our galaxy via the resonant emission $|{\rm e}\rangle \to |{\rm g}\rangle + γ+ γ^{\prime}_{} + a$ (or absorption $a + |{\rm e}\rangle \to |{\rm g}\rangle + γ+ γ^{\prime}_{}$) in an atomic system with superradiance, where $|{\rm e}\rangle$ and $|{\rm g}\rangle$ stand for the excited and ground energy levels of ato…
According to the Schiff theorem nuclear electric dipole moment (EDM) is completely shielded in a neutral atom by electrons. This makes a static nuclear electric dipole moment (EDM) unobservable. Interaction with the axion dark matter field generates nuclear EDM $d=d_0 \cos (ωt)$ oscillating with the frequency $ω= m_a c^2/\hbar$ . This EDM generates atomic EDM proportional to $ω^2$. This effect is strongly enhanced in molecules since nuclei move slowly and do not produce as efficient screening of oscillating nuclear EDM as electrons do. An additional strong enhancement comes due to a small ener…
We show that the interaction of an axion field, or in general a pseudoscalar field, with the axial-vector current generated by an electron through a derivative-type coupling can give rise to a time-dependent mixing of opposite-parity states in atomic and molecular systems. Likewise, the analogous interaction of an axion field with the axial-vector current generated by a nucleon can give rise to time-dependent mixing of opposite-parity states in nuclear systems. This mixing can induce oscillating electric dipole moments, oscillating parity non-conservation effects and oscillating anapole moment…
Light (pseudo-)scalar fields are promising candidates to be the dark matter in the Universe. Under certain initial conditions in the early Universe and/or with certain types of self-interactions, they can form compact dark-matter objects such as axion stars or Q-balls. Direct encounters with such objects can be searched for by using a global network of atomic magnetometers. It is shown that for a range of masses and radii not ruled out by existing observations, the terrestrial encounter rate with axion stars or Q-balls can be sufficiently high (at least once per year) for a detection. Furtherm…
In the presence of P,T-violating interactions, the exchange of axion-like particles between electrons and nucleons in atoms and molecules induces electric dipole moments (EDMs) of atoms and molecules. We perform calculations of such axion-exchange-induced atomic EDMs using the relativistic Hartree-Fock-Dirac method including electron core polarisation (RPA) corrections. We present analytical estimates to explain the dependence of these induced atomic EDMs on the axion mass and atomic parameters. From the experimental bounds on the EDMs of atoms and molecules, including $^{133}$Cs, $^{205}$Tl, …
Quantum analysis is made on the dynamical system consisting of the cosmic axions, photons and Rydberg atoms which are interacting in the resonant cavity. The atomic motion in a continuous incident beam is taken into account properly in order to make a precise estimate of the efficiency of the Rydberg atom cavity detector for dark matter axion search.
The exchange of an axion-like particle between atomic electrons and the nucleus may induce electric dipole moments (EDMs) of atoms and molecules. This interaction is described by a parity- and time-reversal-invariance-violating potential which depends on the product of a scalar $g^s$ and a pseudoscalar $g^p$ coupling constant. We consider the interaction with the specific combination of these constants, $g_e^s g_N^p$, which gives significant contributions to the EDMs of diamagnetic atoms. In this paper, we calculate these contributions to the EDMs of $^{199}$Hg, $^{129}$Xe, $^{211}$Rn and $^{2…
In certain laboratory experiments the production and/or detection of axions is due to the photon-axion transformations in a strong magnetic field. This process is coherent, and the rate of the transformation is proportional to the length $l$ and magnitude $B$ of the magnetic field squared, $\sim l^2B^2$. In the present paper, we consider coherent production of axions due to the forward scattering of photons on atoms or molecules. This process may be represented as being due to an effective electromagnetic field which converts photons to axions. We present analytical expressions for such effect…

Using the relativistic Hartree-Fock approximation, we calculate the rates of atomic ionization by absorption of axions of the energies up to 100 keV and for an arbitrary value of the axion mass. We present numerical results for atoms used in the low radioactive background searches of dark matter (e.g. Ar, Ge and Xe), as well as the analytical formula which fits numerical calculations for the absorption cross sections and can be applied for other atoms, molecules and condensed matter systems. Using the cross-sections for the axio-electric effect, we derive the counting rates induced by solar ax…
Agreement between theoretical calculations of atomic structure and spectroscopic measurements is used to constrain possible contribution of exotic spin-dependent interactions between electrons to the energy differences between states in helium-4. In particular, constraints on dipole-dipole interactions associated with the exchange of pseudoscalar bosons (such as axions or axion-like particles, ALPs) with masses $10^{-2}~{\rm eV} \lesssim m \lesssim 10^{4}~{\rm eV}$ are improved by a factor of $\sim 100$. The first atomic-scale constraints on several exotic velocity-dependent dipole-dipole inte…
