Fluctuation dynamos are thought to play an essential role in magnetized galaxy evolution, saturating within $\sim0.01~$Gyr and thus potentially acting as seeds for large-scale dynamos. However, unambiguous observational confirmation of the fluctuation dynamo action in a galactic environment is still missing. This is because, in spiral galaxies, it is difficult to differentiate between small-scale magnetic fields generated by a fluctuation dynamo and those due to the tangling of the large-scale field. We propose that observations of magnetic fields in elliptical galaxies would directly probe the fluctuation dynamo action. This is motivated by the fact that in ellipticals, due to their lack of significant rotation, the conventional large-scale dynamo is absent and the fluctuation dynamo is responsible for controlling the magnetic field strength and structure. By considering turbulence injected by Type Ia supernova explosions and possible magnetic field amplification by cooling flows, we estimate expected magnetic field strengths of $0.2~-~1 \,μ{\rm G}$ in quiescent elliptical galaxies. We use a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation to estimate the distribution and redshift evolution of field strengths, tentatively finding a decrease in magnetic field strength with decreasing redshift. We analyse a sample of radio sources that exhibit the Laing-Garrington (LG) effect (radio polarization asymmetry in jets) and infer magnetic field strengths between $0.14~-~1.33 \,μ{\rm G}$ for a uniform thermal electron density and between $1.36~-~6.21\,μ{\rm G}$ for the thermal electron density following the King profile. We examine observational techniques for measuring the magnetic field saturation state in elliptical galaxies, focusing on Faraday RM grids, the LG effect, synchrotron emission, and gravitational lensing, finding appealing prospects for future empirical analysis.
We study the global consequences in the halos of spiral galaxies of the steady, axially symmetric, mean field dynamo. We use the classical theory but add the possibility of using the velocity field components as parameters in addition to the helicity and diffusivity. The analysis is based on the simplest version of the theory and uses scale-invariant solutions. The velocity field (subject to restrictions) is a scale invariant field in a `pattern' frame, in place of a full dynamical theory. The `pattern frame' of reference may either be the systemic frame or some rigidly rotating spiral pattern…
We review our current understanding of galactic dynamo theory, paying particular attention to numerical simulations both of the mean-field equations and the original three-dimensional equations relevant to describing the magnetic field evolution for a turbulent flow. We emphasize the theoretical difficulties in explaining non-axisymmetric magnetic fields in galaxies and discuss the observational basis for such results in terms of rotation measure analysis. Next, we discuss nonlinear theory, the role of magnetic helicity conservation and magnetic helicity fluxes. This leads to the possibility t…
We analyse the observational signatures of galactic magnetic fields that are self-consistently generated in magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the interstellar medium through turbulence driven by supernova (SN) explosions and differential rotation. In particular, we study the time evolution of the Faraday rotation measure (RM), synchrotron radiation, and Stokes parameters by characterising the typical structures formed in the plane of observation. We do this by defining two distinct models for both thermal and cosmic ray (CR) electron distributions. Our results indicate that the maps of RM hav…
Mean-field galactic dynamo theory is the leading theory to explain the prevalence of regular magnetic fields in spiral galaxies, but its systematic comparison with observations is still incomplete and fragmentary. Here we compare predictions of mean-field dynamo models to observational data on magnetic pitch angle and the strength of the mean magnetic field. We demonstrate that a standard $α^2Ω$ dynamo model produces pitch angles of the regular magnetic fields of nearby galaxies that are reasonably consistent with available data. The dynamo estimates of the magnetic field strength are generall…
[Abridged] We study the properties, evolution and formation mechanisms of isolated field elliptical galaxies. We create a mock catalogue of isolated field elliptical galaxies from the Millennium Simulation Galaxy Catalogue, and trace their merging histories. The formation, identity and assembly redshifts of simulated isolated and non-isolated elliptical galaxies are studied and compared. Observational and numerical data are used to compare age, mass, and the colour-magnitude relation. Our results, based on simulation data, show that almost seven per cent of all elliptical galaxies brighter tha…
We argue that global magnetic field reversals similar to those observed in the Milky Way occur quite frequently in mean-field galactic dynamo models that have relatively strong, random, seed magnetic fields that are localized in discrete regions. The number of reversals decreases to zero with reduction of the seed strength, efficiency of the galactic dynamo and size of the spots of the seed field. A systematic observational search for magnetic field reversals in a representative sample of spiral galaxies promises to give valuable information concerning seed magnetic fields and, in this way, to…
Irregular galaxies are usually smaller and less massive than their spiral, S0, and elliptical counterparts. Radio observations indicate that a magnetic field is present in irregular galaxies whose value is similar to that in spiral galaxies. However, the conditions in the interstellar medium of an irregular galaxy are unfavorable for amplification of the magnetic field because of the slow rotation and low shearing rate. We investigate the cosmic-ray driven dynamo in the interstellar medium of an irregular galaxy. We study its efficiency under the conditions of slow rotation and weak shear. The…
We have studied a large number of elliptical galaxies and found a correlation between their dark matter content and the ellipticity of their visible shape. The galaxies were strictly selected so that only typical medium-size elliptical galaxies were considered. Galaxies with unusual characteristics were rejected to minimize point-to-point data scatter and avoid systematic biases. Data from six different techniques of extracting the galactic dark matter content were used to avoid methodological biases. A thorough investigation of the interrelation between attributes of elliptical galaxies was c…
We present an effectively global analytical asymptotic galactic dynamo solution for the regular magnetic field of an axisymmetric thin disc in the saturated state. This solution is constructed by combining two well-known types of local galactic dynamo solution, parameterized by the disc radius. Namely, the critical (zero growth) solution obtained by treating the dynamo equation as a perturbed diffusion equation is normalized using a non-linear solution that makes use of the `no-$z$' approximation and the dynamical $α$-quenching non-linearity. This overall solution is found to be reasonably acc…
We search for observational signatures of magnetic helicity in data from all-sky radio polarization surveys of the Milky Way Galaxy. Such a detection would help confirm the dynamo origin of the field and may provide new observational constraints for its shape. We compare our observational results to simulated observations for both a simple helical field, and for a more complex field that comes from a solution to the dynamo equation. Our simulated observations show that the large-scale helicity of a magnetic field is reflected in the large-scale structure of the fractional polarization derived …
Context. The assembly history of the stellar component of a massive elliptical galaxy is closely related to that of its dark matter halo. Measuring how the properties of galaxies correlate with their halo mass can help understand their evolution. Aims. We investigate how the dark matter halo mass of elliptical galaxies varies as a function of their properties, using weak gravitational lensing observations. To minimise the chances of biases, we focus on galaxy properties that can be determined robustly: the surface brightness profile and the colour. Methods. We selected 2409 central massive ell…
We show that the magnetic analogue of the Rädler effect of mean-field dynamo theory leads to a non-linear backreaction that quenches a large-scale galactic dynamo, and can result in saturation of the large-scale magnetic field at near-equipartition with turbulent kinetic energy density. In a rotating fluid containing small-scale magnetic fluctuations, anisotropic terms in the mean electromotive force are induced via the Coriolis effect and these terms lead to a reduction of the growth rate in a predominantly $αΩ$-type galactic dynamo (Chamandy & Singh 2017). By including the generation of smal…
Small-scale dynamos play important roles in modern astrophysics, especially on Galactic and extragalactic scales. Owing to dynamo action, purely hydrodynamic Kolmogorov turbulence hardly exists and is often replaced by hydromagnetic turbulence. Understanding the size of dissipative magnetic structures is important in estimating the time scale of Galactic scintillation and other observational and theoretical aspects of interstellar and intergalactic small-scale dynamos. Here we show that, during the kinematic phase of the small-scale dynamo, the cutoff wavenumber of the magnetic energy spectra …
In this paper we use HST/WFC3 observations of 6 galaxies from the DYNAMO survey, combined with stellar population modelling of the SED, to determine the stellar masses of DYNAMO clumps. The DYNAMO sample has been shown to have properties similar to $z\approx1.5$ turbulent, clumpy disks. DYNAMO sample clump masses offer a useful comparison for studies of $z>1$ in that the galaxies have the same properties, yet the observational biases are significantly different. Using DYNAMO we can more easily probe rest-frame near-IR wavelengths and also probe finer spatial scales. We find that the stellar ma…
Magnetic fields in elliptical galaxies are poorly constrained due to a lack of significant synchrotron emission from them. This paper explores properties of magnetic fields in ellipticals via two methods. First, we exploit the Laing-Garrington effect (asymmetry in the observed polarization fraction between radio galaxy jets) for 57 galaxies with redshifts up to $0.5$. We use the differences in polarization fraction and rotation measure between the jet and counterjet to estimate the small- and large-scale magnetic fields in and around ellipticals (including their circumgalactic medium). We find…

We investigate the build-up of the galactic dynamo and subsequently the origin of a magnetic driven outflow. We use a setup of an isolated disc galaxy with a realistic circum-galactic medium (CGM). We find good agreement of the galactic dynamo with theoretical and observational predictions from the radial and toroidal components of the magnetic field as function of radius and disc scale height. We find several field reversals indicating dipole structure at early times and quadrupole structure at late times. Together with the magnetic pitch angle and the dynamo control parameters $R_α$, $R_ω$ a…
We present a study of the relationship between black hole accretion rate (BHAR) and star formation rate (SFR) in a sample of giant elliptical galaxies. These galaxies, which live at the centers of galaxy groups and clusters, have star formation and black hole activity that is primarily fueled by gas condensing out of the hot intracluster medium. For a sample of 46 galaxies spanning 5 orders of magnitude in BHAR and SFR, we find a mean ratio of log(BHAR/SFR) = -1.45 +/- 0.2, independent of the methodology used to constrain both SFR and BHAR. This ratio is significantly higher than most previous…
We have recently suggested that dust growth in the cold gas phase dominates the dust abundance in elliptical galaxies while dust is efficiently destroyed in the hot X-ray emitting plasma (hot gas). In order to understand the dust evolution in elliptical galaxies, we construct a simple model that includes dust growth in the cold gas and dust destruction in the hot gas. We also take into account the effect of mass exchange between these two gas components induced by active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback. We survey reasonable ranges of the relevant parameters in the model and find that AGN feedb…
We use the Fundamental Plane of Elliptical Galaxies to constrain the so-called Hybrid Gravity, a modified theory of gravity where General Relativity is improved by further degrees of freedom of metric-affine Palatini formalism of $f(\cal R)$ gravity. Because the Fundamental Plane is connected to the global properties of elliptical galaxies, it is possible to obtain observational constraints on the parameters of Hybrid Gravity in the weak field limit. We analyze also the velocity distribution of elliptical galaxies comparing our theoretical results in the case of Hybrid Gravity with astronomica…
Many galaxies contain magnetic fields supported by galactic dynamo action. However, nothing definitive is known about magnetic fields in ring galaxies. Here we investigate large-scale magnetic fields in a previously unexplored context, namely ring galaxies, and concentrate our efforts on the structures that appear most promising for galactic dynamo action, i.e. outer star-forming rings in visually unbarred galaxies. We use tested methods for modelling $α-Ω$ galactic dynamos, taking into account the available observational information concerning ionized interstellar matter in ring galaxies. Our…
We show that fundamental plane of elliptical galaxies can be used to obtain observational constraints on metric theories of gravity. Being it connected to global properties of ellipticals, it can fix parameters of modified gravity. Specifically, we use fundamental plane to constrain modified theories of gravity with Yukawa-like corrections which commonly emerge in the post-Newtonian limit. After giving examples on how these corrections are derived, we first analyze the velocity distribution of elliptical galaxies comparing theoretical results of modified gravity with Yukawa-like corrections wi…
How elliptical galaxies form is a key question in observational cosmology. While the formation of massive ellipticals is strongly linked to mergers, the low mass (Mstar < 10^9.5 MSun) regime remains less well explored. In particular, studying elliptical populations when they are blue, and therefore rapidly building stellar mass, offers strong constraints on their formation. Here, we study 108 blue, low-mass ellipticals (which have a median stellar mass of 10^8.7 MSun) at z < 0.3 in the COSMOS field. Visual inspection of extremely deep optical HSC images indicates that less than 3 per cent of t…
The alpha element to iron peak element ratio, for example [Mg/Fe], is a commonly applied indicator of the galaxy star formation timescale (SFT) since the two groups of elements are mainly produced by different types of supernovae that explode over different timescales. However, it is insufficient to consider only [Mg/Fe] when estimating the SFT. The [Mg/Fe] yield of a stellar population depends on its metallicity. Therefore, it is possible for galaxies with different SFTs and at the same time different total metallicity to have the same [Mg/Fe]. This effect has not been properly taken into con…
