We develop a unified framework to characterize one-shot transformations of dynamical quantum resources in terms of resource quantifiers, establishing universal conditions for exact and approximate transformations in general resource theories. Our framework encompasses all dynamical resources represented as quantum channels, including those with a specific structure --- such as boxes, assemblages, and measurements --- thus immediately applying in a vast range of physical settings. For the particularly important manipulation tasks of distillation and dilution, we show that our conditions become necessary and sufficient for broad classes of important theories, enabling an exact characterization of these tasks and establishing a precise connection between operational problems and resource monotones based on entropic divergences. We exemplify our results by considering explicit applications to: quantum communication, where we obtain exact expressions for one-shot quantum capacity and simulation cost assisted by no-signalling, separability-preserving, and positive partial transpose-preserving codes; as well as to nonlocality, contextuality, and measurement incompatibility, where we present operational applications of a number of relevant resource measures.
We obtain expressions for the optimal rates of one- shot entanglement manipulation under operations which generate a negligible amount of entanglement. As the optimal rates for entanglement distillation and dilution in this paradigm, we obtain the max- and min-relative entropies of entanglement, the two logarithmic robustnesses of entanglement, and smoothed versions thereof. This gives a new operational meaning to these entanglement measures. Moreover, by considering the limit of many identical copies of the shared entangled state, we partially recover the recently found reversibility of entan…
We show that the dynamic resource theory of quantum entanglement can be formulated using the superchannel theory. In this formulation, we identify the separable channels and the class of free superchannels that preserve channel separability as free resources, and choose the swap channels as dynamic entanglement golden units. Our first result is that the one-shot dynamic entanglement cost of a bipartite quantum channel under the free superchannels is bounded by the standard log-robustness of channels. The one-shot distillable dynamic entanglement of a bipartite quantum channel under the free su…

We investigate which non-Gaussian resources are needed, in addition to Gaussian operations and measurements, for implementation of arbitrary quantum gates on multimode quantum states of light. We show that an arbitrary set of states with finite expansion in Fock basis is sufficient for this task. As an illustration we present an explicit scheme for probabilistic implementation of the nonlinear sign gate using resource non-Gaussian states and Gaussian operations.
Entanglement bits or ``ebits'' have been proposed as a quantitative measure of a fundamental resource in quantum information processing. For such an interpretation to be valid, it is important to show that the same number of ebits in different forms or concentrations are inter-convertible in the asymptotic limit. Here we draw attention to a very important but hitherto unnoticed aspect of entanglement manipulation --- the classical communication cost. We construct an explicit procedure which demonstrates that for bi-partite pure states, in the asymptotic limit, entanglement can be concentrated …
A fundamental problem in resource theory is to study the manipulation of the resource. Focusing on a general dynamical resource theory of quantum channels, here we consider tasks of one-shot resource distillation and dilution with a single copy of the resource. For any target of unitary channel or pure state preparation channel, we establish a universal strategy to determine upper and lower bounds on rates that convert between any given resource and the target. We show that the rates are related to resource measures based on the channel robustness and the channel hypothesis testing entropy, wi…
We study the one-shot distillation of general quantum resources, providing a unified quantitative description of the maximal fidelity achievable in this task, and revealing similarities shared by broad classes of resources. We establish fundamental quantitative and qualitative limitations on resource distillation applicable to all convex resource theories. We show that every convex quantum resource theory admits a meaningful notion of a pure maximally resourceful state which maximizes several monotones of operational relevance and finds use in distillation. We endow the generalized robustness …
Although it is well known that the amount of resources that can be asymptotically distilled from a quantum state or channel does not exceed the resource cost needed to produce it, the corresponding relation in the non-asymptotic regime hitherto has not been well understood. Here, we establish a quantitative relation between the one-shot distillable resource yield and dilution cost in terms of transformation errors involved in these processes. Notably, our bound is applicable to quantum state and channel manipulation with respect to any type of quantum resource and any class of free transformat…
A fundamental approach for the characterization and quantification of all kinds of resources is to study the conversion between different resource objects under certain constraints. Here we analyze, from a resource-non-specific standpoint, the optimal efficiency of resource formation and distillation tasks with only a single copy of the given quantum state, thereby establishing a unified framework of one-shot quantum resource manipulation. We find general bounds on the optimal rates characterized by resource measures based on the smooth max/min-relative entropies and hypothesis testing relativ…
Quantum resource manipulation may include an ancillary state called a catalyst, which aids the transformation while restoring its original form at the end, and characterizing the enhancement enabled by catalysts is essential to reveal the ultimate manipulability of the precious resource quantity of interest. Here, we show that allowing correlation among multiple catalysts can offer arbitrary power in the manipulation of quantum coherence. We prove that any state transformation can be accomplished with an arbitrarily small error by covariant operations with catalysts that may create a correlati…
Every restriction on quantum operations defines a resource theory, determining how quantum states that cannot be prepared under the restriction may be manipulated and used to circumvent the restriction. A superselection rule is a restriction that arises through the lack of a classical reference frame and the states that circumvent it (the resource) are quantum reference frames. We consider the resource theories that arise from three types of superselection rule, associated respectively with lacking: (i) a phase reference, (ii) a frame for chirality, and (iii) a frame for spatial orientation. F…
We analyze a task in which classical and quantum messages are simultaneously communicated via a noisy quantum channel, assisted with a limited amount of shared entanglement. We derive direct and converse bounds for the one-shot capacity region, represented by the smooth conditional entropies and the error tolerance. The proof is based on the randomized partial decoupling theorem, which is a generalization of the decoupling theorem. The two bounds match in the asymptotic limit of infinitely many uses of a memoryless channel and coincide with the previous result obtained by Hsieh and Wilde. Dire…
We present bounds for distilling many copies of a pure state from an arbitrary initial state in a general quantum resource theory. Our bounds apply to operations that are able to generate no more than a $δ$ amount of resource, where $δ\geq 0$ is a given parameter. To maximize applicability of our upper bound, we assume little structure on the set of free states under consideration besides a weak form of superadditivity of the function $G_{min}(ρ)$, which measures the overlap between $ρ$ and the set of free states. Our bounds are given in terms of this function and the robustness of resource. K…
Manipulation and quantification of quantum resources are fundamental problems in quantum physics. In the asymptotic limit, coherence distillation and dilution have been proposed by manipulating infinite identical copies of states. In the non-asymptotic setting, finite data-size effects emerge, and the practically relevant problem of coherence manipulation using finite resources has been left open. This letter establishes the one-shot theory of coherence dilution, which involves converting maximally coherent states into an arbitrary quantum state using maximally incoherent operations, dephasing…
We examine various manipulations of photon number states which can be implemented by teleportation technique with number sum measurement. The preparations of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen resources as well as the number sum measurement resulting in projection to certain Bell state may be done conditionally with linear optical elements, i.e., beam splitters, phase shifters and zero-one-photon detectors. Squeezed vacuum states are used as primary entanglement resource, while single-photon sources are not required.
Quantum resource theories have been widely studied to systematically characterize the non-classicality of quantum systems. Most resource theories focus on quantum states and study their interconversions. Although quantum channels are generally used as the tool for state manipulation, such a manipulation capability can be naturally regarded as a generalized quantum resource, leading to an open research direction in the resource theories of quantum channels. Various resource-theoretic properties of channels have been investigated, however, without treating channels themselves as operational reso…
One of the main goals of any resource theory such as entanglement, quantum thermodynamics, quantum coherence, and asymmetry, is to find necessary and sufficient conditions (NSC) that determine whether one resource can be converted to another by the set of free operations. Here we find such NSC for a large class of quantum resource theories which we call affine resource theories (ART). ARTs include the resource theories of athermality, asymmetry, and coherence, but not entanglement. Remarkably, the NSC can be expressed as a family of inequalities between resource monotones (quantifiers) that ar…
We establish bounds on the maximum entanglement gain and minimum quantum communication cost of the Fully Quantum Slepian-Wolf protocol in the one-shot regime, which is considered to be at the apex of the existing family tree in Quantum Information Theory. These quantities, which are expressed in terms of smooth min- and max-entropies, reduce to the known rates of quantum communication cost and entanglement gain in the asymptotic i.i.d. scenario. We also provide an explicit proof of the optimality of these asymptotic rates. We introduce a resource inequality for the one-shot FQSW protocol, whic…
