In a typical fusion experiment, the plasma can have several possible confinement modes. At the TCV tokamak, aside from the Low (L) and High (H) confinement modes, an additional mode, dithering (D), is frequently observed. Developing methods that automatically detect these modes is considered to be important for future tokamak operation. Previous work with deep learning methods, particularly convolutional recurrent neural networks (Conv-RNNs), indicates that they are a suitable approach. Nevertheless, those models are sensitive to noise in the temporal alignment of labels, and that model in particular is limited to making individual decisions taking into account only its own hidden state and its input at each time step. In this work, we propose an architecture for a sequence-to-sequence neural network model with attention which solves both of those issues. Using a carefully calibrated dataset, we compare the performance of a Conv-RNN with that of our proposed sequence-to-sequence model, and show two results: one, that the Conv-RNN can be improved upon with new data; two, that the sequence-to-sequence model can improve the results even further, achieving excellent scores on both train and test data.
In a new toroidal laboratory plasma device including a poloidal magnetic field created by an internal circular conductor, the confinement efficiency of the magnetized plasma and the turbulence level are studied in different situations. The plasma density is greatly enhanced when a sufficient poloidal magnetic field is established. Moreover, the instabilities and the turbulence usually found in toroidal devices without shear of the magnetic field lines are suppressed when the rotational transform is present. The measurement of the plasma decay time allows to determine the confinement time of th…
The efficient production of electricity from nuclear fusion in magnetically confined plasmas relies on a good confinement of the thermal energy. For more than thirty years, the observation that such confinement depends on the mass of the plasma isotope and its interaction with apparently unrelated plasma conditions has remained largely unexplained and it has become one of the main unsolved issues. By means of numerical studies based on the gyrokinetic theory, we quantitatively show how the plasma microturbulence depends on the isotope mass through nonlinear multiscale microturbulence effects i…
Quasisymmetry is an unusual symmetry that can be present in toroidal magnetic fields, enabling confinement of charged particles and plasma. Here it is shown that both quasi-axisymmetry and quasi-helical symmetry can be achieved to a much higher precision than previously thought over a significant volume, resulting in exceptional confinement. For a 1 Tesla mean field far from axisymmetry (vacuum rotational transform $>$ 0.4), symmetry-breaking mode amplitudes throughout a volume of aspect ratio 6 can be made as small as the typical $\sim 50$ $μ$T geomagnetic field.
Plasma fluctuations in the scrape-off layer of the Alcator C-Mod tokamak in ohmic and high confinement modes have been analyzed using gas puff imaging data. In all cases investigated, the time series of emission from a single spatially-resolved view into the gas puff are dominated by large-amplitude bursts, attributed to blob-like filament structures moving radially outwards and poloidally. There is a remarkable similarity of the fluctuation statistics in ohmic plasmas and in edge localized mode-free and enhanced D-alpha high confinement mode plasmas. Conditionally averaged wave forms have a t…
Creating magnetized relativistic pair plasma in the laboratory would enable the exploration of unique plasma physics relevant to some of the most energetic events in the universe. As a step towards a laboratory pair plasma, we have demonstrated effective confinement of multi-$\mathrm{MeV}$ electrons inside a pulsed-power-driven $13$ $\mathrm{T}$ magnetic mirror field with a mirror ratio of $2.6$. The confinement is diagnosed by measuring the axial and radial losses with magnetic spectrometers. The loss spectra are consistent with $\leq 2.5$ $\mathrm{MeV}$ electrons confined in the mirror for $…
Confinement time of electron plasmas trapped using a purely toroidal magnetic field has been extended to $\sim 100$ s in a small aspect ratio ($R_{o}/{a} \sim {1.59}$, $R_o$ and $a$ are device major and minor radius, respectively), partial torus. It surpasses the previous record by nearly two orders of magnitude. Lifetime is estimated from the frequency scaling of the linear diocotron mode launched from sections of the wall, that are also used for mode diagnostics. Confinement improves enormously with reduction in neutral pressure in the presence of a steady state magnetic field. In addition, …
In this paper we have studied the influence of reversed shear on the improvement of the confinement's quality in the plasma of tokamak and especially in reducing the anomalous transport. For that, we have used a special model for the drift wave fields. Comparison between particles trajectories for normal and reversed shear is carried out in 2 D and 3 D presentation. Also, the diffusion coefficient of particles for the two cases, normal and negative shear, is evaluated.
The transition dynamics from the low (L) to the high (H) confinement mode in magnetically confined plasmas is investigated using a first-principles four-field fluid model. Numerical results are in close agreement with measurements from the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak - EAST. Particularly, the slow transition with an intermediate dithering phase is well reproduced by the numerical solutions. Additionally, the model reproduces the experimentally determined L-H transition power threshold scaling that the ion power threshold increases with increasing particle density. The results…
An alternative to the Braginskii decomposition is proposed, one rooted in treating the viscosity as a scalar quantity in a coordinate-free representation. With appropriate application to the rate-of-shear tensor, one may solve the neoclassical force density equations for its undetermined velocity dependence, as well as the radial and poloidal profiles mentioned in [R. W. Johnson, Phys. Plasmas, under review], using an improved poloidal expansion. The pseudoplastic behavior of magnetized plasma is again obtained, and the high viscosity solution is determined to be physical. A clear relationship…
The replacement of the JET carbon wall (C-wall) by a Be/W ITER-like wall (ILW) has affected the plasma energy confinement. To investigate this, experiments have been performed with both the C-wall and ILW to vary the heating power over a wide range for plasmas with different shapes.
In the past years, EUV lithography scanner systems have entered High-Volume Manufacturing for state-of-the-art Integrated Circuits (IC), with critical dimensions down to 10 nm. This technology uses 13.5 nm EUV radiation, which is shaped and transmitted through a near-vacuum H2 background gas. This gas is excited into a low-density H2 plasma by the EUV radiation, as generated in pulsed mode operation by the Laser-Produced Plasma (LPP) in the EUV Source. Thus, in the confinement created by the walls and mirrors within the scanner system, a reductive plasma environment is created that must be und…

The ability to separate large volumes of mixed species based on atomic mass appears desirable for a variety of emerging applications with high societal impact. One possibility to meet this objective consists in leveraging mass differential effects in rotating plasmas. Beyond conventional centrifugation, rotating plasmas offer in principle additional ways to separate elements based on mass. Single ion orbits show that ion radial mass separation in a uniform magnetized plasma column can be achieved by applying a tailored electric potential profile across the column, or by driving a rotating magn…
The spectral asymmetry of the wave energy distribution of dust particles during mode-coupling induced melting, observed for the first time in plasma crystals by Couëdel et al. [Phys. Rev. E 89, 053108 (2014)], is studied theoretically and by molecular-dynamics simulations. It is shown that an anisotropy of the well confining the microparticles selects the directions of preferred particle motion. The observed differences in intensity of waves of opposed directions is explained by a nonvanishing phonon flux. Anisotropic phonon scattering by defects and Umklapp scattering are proposed as possible…
It is shown that rapid substantial changes in heating rate can induce transitions to improved energy confinement regimes in zero-dimensional models for tokamak plasma phenomenology. We examine for the first time the effect of step changes in heating rate in the models of E-J.Kim and P.H.Diamond, Phys.Rev.Lett. 90, 185006 (2003) and M.A.Malkov and P.H.Diamond, Phys.Plasmas 16, 012504 (2009) which nonlinearly couple the evolving temperature gradient, micro-turbulence and a mesoscale flow; and in the extension of H.Zhu, S.C.Chapman and R.O.Dendy, Phys.Plasmas 20, 042302 (2013), which couples to a…
A change of the particle density (by gas puff, pellets or impurity seeding) during the plasma discharge in tokamak produces a radial current and implicitly a torque and rotation that can modify the state of confinement. After ionization the newly born ions will evolve toward the periodic neoclassical orbits (trapped or circulating) but the first part of their excursion, which precedes the periodicity, is an effective radial current. It is short, spatially finite and unique for each new ion, but multiplied by the rate of ionization and it can produce a substantial total radial current. The asso…
Energy transport and confinement in tokamak fusion plasmas is usually determined by the coupled nonlinear interactions of small-scale drift turbulence and larger scale coherent nonlinear structures, such as zonal flows, together with free energy sources such as temperature gradients. Zero-dimensional models, designed to embody plausible physical narratives for these interactions, can help identify the origin of enhanced energy confinement and of transitions between confinement regimes. A prime zero-dimensional paradigm is predator-prey or Lotka-Volterra. Here we extend a successful three-varia…
We report experimental results validating the concept that plasma confinement is enhanced in a magnetic cusp configuration when beta (plasma pressure/magnetic field pressure) is order of unity. This enhancement is required for a fusion power reactor based on cusp confinement to be feasible. The magnetic cusp configuration possesses a critical advantage: the plasma is stable to large scale perturbations. However, early work indicated that plasma loss rates in a reactor based on a cusp configuration were too large for net power production. Grad and others theorized that at high beta a sharp boun…
Long-pulse operation of a self-sustained fusion reactor using toroidal magnetic containment requires control over the content of alpha particles produced by D-T fusion reactions. On the one hand, MeV-class alpha particles must stay confined to heat the plasma. On the other hand, decelerated helium ash must be expelled before diluting the fusion fuel. Our kinetic-magnetohydrodynamic hybrid simulations of a large tokamak plasma confirm the existence of a parameter window where such energy-selective confinement can be accomplished by exploiting internal relaxation events known as `sawtooth crashe…
This overview presents a tutorial introduction to the theory of magnetic plasma confinement in toroidal confinement systems with particular emphasis on axisymmetric equilibrium geometries, and tokamaks. The discussion covers three important aspects of plasma physics: Equilibrium, Stability, and Transport. The section on equilibrium will go through an introduction to ideal magnetohydrodynamics, curvilinear system of coordinates, flux coordinates, extensions to axisymmetric equilibrium, Grad-Shafranov Equation (GSE), Green's function formalism, as well as analytical and numerical solutions to GS…
Two-dimensional space-resolved temperature and density images of an inertial confinement fusion (ICF) implosion core have been diagnosed for the first time. Argon-doped, direct-drive ICF experiments were performed at the Omega Laser Facility and a collection of two-dimensional space-resolved spectra were obtained from an array of gated, spectrally resolved pinhole images recorded by a multi-monochromatic x-ray imager. Detailed spectral analysis revealed asymmetries of the core not just in shape and size but in the temperature and density spatial distributions, thus characterizing the core with…
We demonstrate magnetic confinement of an ultracold neutral plasma (UCNP) created at the null of a biconic cusp, or quadrupole magnetic field. Initially, the UCNP expands due to electron thermal pressure. As the plasma encounters stronger fields, expansion slows and the density distribution molds to the field. UCNP electrons are strongly magnetized over most of the plasma, while ion magnetization is only significant at the boundaries. Observations suggest that electrons and ions are predominantly trapped by magnetic mirroring and ambipolar electric fields respectively. Confinement times approa…
Two-dimensional Particle-In-Cell simulations are used to explore collisionless shock acceleration in the corona plasma surrounding the compressed core of an inertial confinement fusion pellet. We show that an intense laser pulse interacting with the long scale-length plasma corona is able to launch a collisionless shock around the critical density. The nonlinear wave travels up-ramp through the plasma reflecting and accelerating the background ions. Our results suggest that protons with characteristics suitable for ion fast ignition may be achieved in this way.

The key result of the present work is the theoretical prediction and observation of the formation of a new type of transport barrier in fusion plasmas, called F-ATB (fast ion-induced anomalous transport barrier). As demonstrated through state-of-the-art global electrostatic and electromagnetic simulations, the F-ATB is characterized by a full suppression of the turbulent transport - caused by strongly sheared, axisymmetric $E \times B$ flows - and an increase of the neoclassical counterpart, albeit keeping the overall fluxes at significantly reduced levels. The trigger mechanism is shown to be…
This paper reports the impact on confinement and power load of the high-shape 2.5MA ELMy H-mode scenario at JET of a change from an all carbon plasma facing components to an all metal wall. In preparation to this change, systematic studies of power load reduction and impact on confinement as a result of fuelling in combination with nitrogen seeding were carried out in JET-C and are compared to their counterpart in JET with a metallic wall. An unexpected and significant change is reported on the decrease of the pedestal confinement but is partially recovered with the injection of nitrogen.
We analyze, using experiments and 3D MHD numerical simulations, the dynamics and radiative properties of a plasma ablated by a laser (1 ns, 10$^{12}$-10$^{13}$ W/cm$^2$) from a solid target, as it expands into a homogeneous, strong magnetic field (up to 30 T) transverse to its main expansion axis. We find that as soon as 2 ns after the start of the expansion, the plasma becomes constrained by the magnetic field. As the magnetic field strength is increased, more plasma is confined close to the target and is heated by magnetic compression. We also observe a dense slab that rapidly expands into v…
One of the main objectives of the LHD is to extend the plasma confinement database for helical systems and to demonstrate such extended plasma confinement properties to be sustained in steady state. Among the various plasma parameter regimes, the study of confinement properties in the collisionless regime is of particular importance. Electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) has been extensively used for these confinement studies of the LHD plasma from the initial operation. The system optimizations including the modification of the transmission and antenna system are performed with the spec…
In the interaction of high-power laser beams with solid density plasma there are a number of mechanisms that generate strong magnetic fields. Such fields subsequently inhibit or redirect electron flows, but can themselves be advected by heat fluxes, resulting in complex interplay between thermal transport and magnetic fields. We show that for heating by multiple laser spots reconnection of magnetic field lines can occur, mediated by these heat fluxes, using a fully implicit 2D Vlasov-Fokker-Planck code. Under such conditions, the reconnection rate is dictated by heat flows rather than Alfvènic …
In some inertial confinement fusion hohlraum designs, the inside plasma is not sufficiently collisional to be satisfactorily described by the Euler equations implemented in hydrodynamic simulation codes, particularly in converging regions of the expanding plasma flow. To better treat that situation, this paper presents an extended hydrodynamics model including higher moments of the particle velocity distribution function, together with physically justified closure assumptions and relaxation terms. A preliminary one-dimensional numerical implementation of the model is shown to give satisfactory…
We discuss a stochastic model for the behavior of electrons in a magnetically confined plasma having axial symmetry. The aim of the work is to provide an explanation for the density limit observed in the Frascati Tokamak Upgrade machine. The dynamical framework deals with an electron embedded in a stationary and uniform magnetic field and affected by an orthogonal random electric field. The behavior of the average plasma profile is determined by the appropriate Fokker-Planck equation associated to the considered model and the disruptive effects of the stochastic electric field is shown. The co…
To determine the electron heat flux density on macroscopic scales, the most widely used approach is to solve a diffusion equation through a multi-group technique. This method is however restricted to transport induced by temperature gradients without accounting for other sources of fast electrons because the electric field induced by the charge separation is indirectly treated. In addition, significant discrepancies are reported on the underlying distribution function when compared to complete kinetic calculations. These limitations motivate the research for alternative reduced kinetic models.…
The goal of this investigation is to study, in the line of previous works, the level of velocity fluctuations in different scenarios of the TJ-II stellarator. The method followed consists in measuring the apparent Doppler temperature of C4+ and protons with high spectral resolution techniques with spatial resolution. The level of turbulent velocities in the plasma has been deduced from the difference observed between the apparent temperature of both species, following a method previously presented and borrowed from astrophysics. The study of this difference, as a function of plasma density and…
The correlation buildup and the formation dynamics of the shell structure in a spherically confined one-component plasma are studied. Using Langevin dynamics simulations the relaxation processes and characteristic time scales and their dependence on the pair interaction and dissipation in the plasma are investigated. While in systems with Coulomb interaction (e.g. trapped ions) in a harmonic confinement shell formation starts at the plasma edge and proceeds inward, this trend is significantly weakened for dusty plasmas with Yukawa interaction. With a suitable change of the confinement conditio…
The effect of changing the driving frequency on the plasma density and the electron dynamics in a capacitive radio-frequency argon plasma operated at low pressures of a few Pa is investigated by Particle in Cell/Monte Carlo Collisions simulations and analytical modeling. In contrast to previous assumptions the plasma density does not follow a quadratic dependence on the driving frequency in this non-local collisionless regime. Instead, a step-like increase at a distinct driving frequency is observed. Based on the analytical power balance model, in combination with a detailed analysis of the el…
The interaction of lasers with plasmas very often leads to nonlocal transport conditions, where the classical hydrodynamic model fails to describe important microscopic physics related to highly mobile particles. In this study we analyze and further propose a modification of the Albritton- Williams-Bernstein-Swartz collision operator Phys. Rev. Lett 57, 1887 (1986) for the nonlocal electron transport under conditions relevant to ICF. The electron distribution function provided by this modification exhibits some very desirable properties when compared to the full Fokker- Planck operator in the …
In the shock-ignition inertial confinement fusion scheme, high-intensity lasers propagate through an inhomogeneous coronal plasma, driving a shock designed to cause fuel ignition. During the high-intensity ignitor laser pulse, SRS backscatter in the long scale-length coronal plasma is likely to be in the kinetic regime. In this work, we use one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations to show that there is a non-linear frequency shift caused by kinetic effects, resulting in the growth of Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) in an inhomogeneous plasma far exceeding the predictions of the fluid the…
A fast and efficient numerical-analytical approach is proposed for description of complex behavior in non-equilibrium ensembles in the BBGKY framework. We construct the multiscale representation for hierarchy of partition functions by means of the variational approach and multiresolution decomposition. Numerical modeling shows the creation of various internal structures from fundamental localized (eigen)modes. These patterns determine the behavior of plasma. The localized (meta) stable pattern (waveleton) is a possible model for energy confinement state (fusion) in plasma.
