The core-cusp problem remains as a challenging discrepancy between observations and simulations in the standard $Λ$CDM model for the formation of galaxies. The problem is that $Λ$CDM simulations predict a steep power-law mass density profile at the center of galactic dark matter halos. However, observations of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group reveal a density profile consistent with a nearly flat distribution of dark matter near the center. A number of solutions to this dilemma have been proposed. Here, we summarize investigations into the possibility that the dark matter particles themselves self interact and scatter. Such self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) particles can smooth out the dark-matter profile in high-density regions. We also review the theoretical proposal that self-interacting dark matter may arise as an additional Higgs scalar in the 3-3-1 extension of the standard model. We present new simulations of galaxy formation and evolution for this formulation of self-interacting dark matter. Current constraints on this self-interacting dark matter are then summarized.
Recent observations have been discovering new ultra-faint dwarf galaxies as small as $\sim20~{\rm pc}$ in half-light radius and $\sim3~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$ in line-of-sight velocity dispersion. In these galaxies, dynamical friction on a star against dark matter can be significant and alter their stellar density distribution. The effect can strongly depend on a central density profile of dark matter, i.e. cusp or core. In this study, I perform computations using a classical and a modern analytic formulae and $N$-body simulations to study how dynamical friction changes a stellar density profile and …
We report on the structure of the nuclear star cluster in the innermost 0.16 pc of the Galaxy as measured by the number density profile of late-type giants. Using laser guide star adaptive optics in conjunction with the integral field spectrograph, OSIRIS, at the Keck II telescope, we are able to differentiate between the older, late-type ($\sim$ 1 Gyr) stars, which are presumed to be dynamically relaxed, and the unrelaxed young ($\sim$ 6 Myr) population. This distinction is crucial for testing models of stellar cusp formation in the vicinity of a black hole, as the models assume that the cusp…
(Abridged) We use N-body simulations to study the effects that a divergent (i.e. "cuspy") dark matter (DM) profile introduces on the tidal evolution of dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs). Our models assume cosmologically-motivated initial conditions where dSphs are DM-dominated systems on eccentric orbits about a host galaxy composed of a dark halo and a baryonic disc. We find that the resilience of dSphs to tidal stripping is extremely sensitive to the halo cuspiness; whereas dwarfs with a cored profile can be easily destroyed by the host disc, those with cusps always retain a bound remnant. F…
We present a suite of 16 high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations of an isolated dwarf galaxy (gaseous and stellar disk plus a stellar bulge) within an initially cuspy dark matter (DM) halo, including self-interactions between the DM particles (SIDM); as well as stochastic star formation and subsequent supernova feedback (SNF), implemented using the stellar feedback model SMUGGLE. The simulations start from identical initial conditions and we regulate the strength of SIDM and SNF by systematically varying the SIDM momentum transfer cross section and the gas density threshold for star formation…
We use a fully GPU $N$-body code to demonstrate that dark matter minihalos, as a new component of globular clusters, resolve both the timing and cusp-core problems in Fornax if the five (or six) globular clusters were recently accreted ($\leq$ 3 Gyr ago) by Fornax. Under these assumptions, infall of these globular clusters does not occur and no star clusters form in the centre of Fornax in accordance with observations. We find that crossings of globular clusters that have DM minihalos near the Fornax centre induce a cusp-to-core transition of the dark matter halo and hence resolve the cusp-cor…

We present a non-parametric reconstruction of the rotation curves (RC) for 88 spiral galaxies under the LOESS+SIMEX technique. In order to compare methods we also perform the parametric approach assuming core and cuspy dark matter (DM) profiles: PISO, NFW, Burkert, Spano, the soliton and two fuzzy soliton$+$NFW. As result of this two approaches, a comparison of the RC obtained is carried out by computing the distance between central curves and the distance between 1$σ$ error bands. Furthermore, we perform a model selection according to two statistical criteria, the BIC and the value of $χ^2_{r…
We report the detection of a stellar density cusp and a velocity dispersion increase in the center of the globular cluster M54, located at the center of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy (Sgr). The central line of sight velocity dispersion is 20.2 +/- 0.7 km/s, decreasing to 16.4 +/- 0.4 km/s at 2.5" (0.3 pc). Modeling the kinematics and surface density profiles as the sum of a King model and a point-mass yields a black hole (BH) mass of ~ 9400 M_sun. However, the observations can alternatively be explained if the cusp stars possess moderate radial anisotropy. A Jeans analysis of the Sgr nucleus re…
Cosmological simulations of the same spiral galaxy: satellite properties, the role of baryonic physics and star formation history in shaping dark matter cores/cusps
We show that Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) predict distinct galactic acceleration curve geometries in $g2$-space - the space of total observed centripetal accelerations $g_{\rm tot}$ vs the inferred Newtonian acceleration from baryonic matter $g_{\rm N}$ - and corresponding rotation speed curves: MOND modified gravity predicts cored geometries for isolated galaxies while MOND modified inertia yields neutral geometries, ie. neither cuspy or cored, based on a cusp-core classification of galaxy rotation curve geometry in $g2$-space - rather than on inferred DM density profiles. The classific…
We adopt the conduction fluid approximation to model the steady-state distribution of matter around a massive black hole at the center of a weakly collisional cluster of particles. By "`weakly collisional" we mean a cluster in which the mean free time between particle collisions is much longer than the characteristic particle crossing (dynamical) time scale, but shorter than the cluster lifetime. When applied to a star cluster, we reproduce the familiar Bahcall-Wolf power-law cusp solution for the stars bound to the black hole. Here the star density scales with radius as $r^{-7/4}$ and the vel…
One of the leading scenarios for the formation of nuclear star clusters in galaxies is related to the orbital decay of globular clusters (GCs) and their subsequent merging, though alternative theories are currently debated. The availability of high-quality data for GCs structural and orbital parameters allow to test different nuclear star cluster formation scenarios. The Fornax dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy is the heaviest satellite of the Milky Way and it is the only known dwarf spheroidal hosting 5 GCs, whereas there are no clear signatures for the presence of a central massive black hole. …
Cusp-core problem is a controversial problem on galactic dark matter haloes. Cosmological N-body simulations has demonstrated that galactic dark matter haloes have a cuspy density profile at the centre. However, baryonic physics may affect the dark matter density profile. For example, it was suggested that adiabatic contraction of baryonic gas makes the dark matter cusp steeper. However, it is still an open question if the gas falls into the galactic centre in smooth adiabatic manner. Recent numerical studies suggested that disc galaxies might experience clumpy phase in their early stage of th…

In this paper, we study the distribution functions that arise naturally during self-similar radial infall of collisionless matter. Such matter may be thought of either as stars or as dark matter particles. If a rigorous steady state is assumed, then the system is infinite and is described by a universal distribution function given the self-similar index. The steady logarithmic potential case is exceptional and yields the familiar Gaussian for an infinite system with an inverse-square density profile. We show subsequently that for time-dependent radial self-similar infall, the logarithmic case …
One of the major and widely known small scale problem with the Lambda CDM model of cosmology is the core-cusp problem. In this study we investigate whether this problem can be resolved using bar instabilities. We see that all the initial bars are thin (b/a $<$ 0.3) in our simulations and the bar becomes thick (b/a $>$ 0.3$) faster in the high resolution simulations. By increasing the resolution, we mean a larger number of disk particles. The thicker bars in the high resolution simulations transfer less angular momentum to the halo. Hence, we find that in the high resolution simulations it take…
We present and test an effective model for N -body simulations that aims at mimicking the impact of supernova (SN) feedback on the dark matter (DM) distribution of isolated halos hosting dwarf galaxies. Although the model is physically decoupled from the cosmological history of both the DM halo and the dwarf galaxy, it allows us to study the impact of different macroscopic parameters such as galaxy concentration, feedback energy and energy injection time in the process of SN-driven core formation in a physically clear way. Using our effective model in a suite of N-body simulations of an isolat…
The stellar surface mass density profiles at the centers of typical ~L* and lower-mass spheroids exhibit power law 'cusps' with $Σ\propto R^(-n)$, where 0.5<n<1 for radii ~1-100 pc. Observations and theory support models in which these cusps are formed by dissipative gas inflows and nuclear starbursts in gas-rich mergers. At these comparatively large radii, stellar relaxation is unlikely to account for or strongly modify the cuspy stellar profiles. We argue that the power-law surface density profiles observed are a natural consequence of the gravitational instabilities that dominate angular mo…
We present the first simulations of tidal stirring of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group carried out in a cosmological context. We use the ErisDARK simulation of a MW-sized galaxy to identify some of the most massive subhalos ($M_{vir} > 10^8 M_{\odot}$) that fall into the main host before $z=2$. Subhalos are replaced before infall with high-resolution models of dwarf galaxies comprising a faint stellar disk embedded in a dark matter halo. The set of models contains cuspy halos as well as halos with "cored" profiles (with asymptotic inner slope $γ= 0.6$). The simulations are then run to $z=0$ w…
Cosmological numerical simulations of galaxy formation have led to the cuspy density profile of a pure cold dark matter halo toward the center, which is in sharp contradiction with the observations of the rotation curves of cold dark matter-dominated dwarf and low surface brightness disk galaxies, with the latter tending to favor mass profiles with a flat central core. Many efforts have been devoted to resolve this cusp-core problem in recent years, among them, baryon-cold dark matter interactions are considered to be the main physical mechanisms erasing the cold dark matter (CDM) cusp into a …
The cold dark matter model predicts cuspy dark matter halos. However, it has been found that, in some low-mass galaxies, cored dark halos provide a better description of their internal dynamics. Here we give constraints on the dark halo profile in the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy by studying the longevity of two cold kinematic substructures detected in this galaxy. We perform N-body simulations of a stellar clump in the Sextans dwarf galaxy, including a live dark matter halo and the main stellar component. We find that, if the dark halo is cuspy, stellar clumps orbiting with semi-major axis…
In optical images, the not amply studied isolated interacting galaxy pair KPG 486 (NGC 6090) displays similar features to the galaxy pair The Antennae (NGC 4038/39). To compare the distribution of ionized hydrogen gas, morphology and kinematic and dynamic behaviour between both galaxy pairs, we present observations in the H$α$ emission line of NGC 6090 acquired with the scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer, PUMA. For each galaxy in NGC 6090 we obtained several kinematic parameters, its velocity field and its rotation curve, we also analysed some of the perturbations induced by their encounter. …
A recent study shows that bars can be induced via interaction of galaxy clusters, but it has been unclear if the bar formation by the interaction between clusters is related to the enhancement of star formation. We study galaxies in 105 galaxy clusters at $0.015<z<0.060$ detected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey data, in order to examine whether the fraction of star-forming galaxies ($f_\mathrm{sf}$) in 16 interacting clusters is enhanced compared with that of the other non-interacting clusters and to investigate the possible connection between the $f_\mathrm{sf}$ enhancement and the bar formatio…
We use the galaxy rotation curves in the SPARC database to compare 9 different dark matter and modified gravity models on an equal footing, paying special attention to the stellar mass-to-light ratios. We compare three non-interacting dark matter models, a self interacting DM (SIDM) model, two hadronically interacting DM (HIDM) models, and three modified Newtonian dynamics type models: MOND, Radial Acceleration Relation (RAR) and a maximal-disk model. The models with DM-gas interactions generate a disky component in the dark matter, which significantly improves the fits to the rotation curves …
We studied the nearby edge-on galaxy NGC4656 and its dwarf low surface brightness companion with the enhanced UV brightness, NGC4656UV, belonging to the interacting system NGC4631/56. Regular photometric structure and relatively big size of NGC4656UV allows to consider this dwarf galaxy as a separate group member rather than a tidal dwarf. Spectral long-slit observations were used to obtain the kinematical parameters and gas-phase metallicity of NGC4656UV and NGC4656. Our rough estimate of the total dynamical mass of NGC4656UV allowed us to conclude that this galaxy is the dark-matter dominate…
Establishing precisely how stars and interstellar medium distribute within the central 100 pc area around an AGN, down to the pc scale, is key for understanding how the very final transfer of matter from kpc scale to the sub-parsec size of the accretion disc is achieved. Using AO-assisted (SPHERE-VLT) near-IR images in H and Ks and narrow-band of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC1068 we analyse the radial distribution of brightness in the central r < 100 pc area down to the pc scale. The median-averaged radial profiles are adjusted by a cusp (power-law) plus a central point-source. A simple radiative t…
It has been often suggested that a tangible relation exists between relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and the morphology of their host galaxies. In particular, relativistic jets may commonly be related to merging events. Here we present for the first time a detailed spectroscopic and morphological analysis of a Seyfert galaxy, SDSS J211852.96-073227.5, at $z = 0.26$. This source has previously been classified as a gamma-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy. We re-observed it with the 6.5m Clay Telescope and these new, high-quality spectroscopic data have revealed that it i…
We study the role of systematic effects in observational studies of the cusp-core problem under the minimum disc approximation using a suite of high-resolution (25-pc softening length) hydrodynamical simulations of dwarf galaxies. We mimic realistic kinematic observations and fit the mock rotation curves with two analytic models commonly used to differentiate cores from cusps in the dark matter distribution. We find that the cored pseudo-isothermal sphere (ISO) model is strongly favoured by the reduced $χ^2_ν$ of the fits in spite of the fact that our simulations contain cuspy Navarro-Frenk-Wh…
We present Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) spectra of HI-rich tidal features located around the outskirts of two interacting galaxy pairs, NGC 3166/9 and NGC 4725/47. These follow-up observations are part of a multi-wavelength campaign to study the properties and frequency of tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs) in group environments. Based on the calculated gas-phase metallicity and redshift, in addition to the previously measured HI and stellar properties, we have confirmed the tidal origins of TDG candidate AGC 208457, which has emerged from the tidal debris of an interaction between the NGC…
Aims. In this paper we continue our study of density cusps that may contain central black holes. Methods. We recall our attempts to use distribution functions with a memory of self-similar relaxation, but mostly they apply only in restricted regions of the global system. We are forced to consider related distribution functions that are steady but not self-similar. Results. One remarkably simple distribution function that has a filled loss cone describes a bulge that transits from a near black hole domain to an outer 'zero flux' regime where$ρ\propto r^{-7/4}$. The transition passes from an ini…
We present a new analytic estimate for the energy required to create a constant density core within a dark matter halo. Our new estimate, based on more realistic assumptions, leads to a required energy that is orders of magnitude lower than is claimed in earlier work. We define a core size based on the logarithmic slope of the dark matter density profile so that it is insensitive to the functional form used to fit observed data. The energy required to form a core depends sensitively on the radial scale over which dark matter within the cusp is redistributed within the halo. Simulations indicat…
Using 70 $μ$ m observations taken with the PACS instrument of the Herschel space telescope, the dust content of the nearby and interacting spiral galaxy NGC 3077 has been compared with the dust content of the isolated galaxies such as NGC 2841, NGC 3184 and NGC 3351. The dust content has allowed us to derive dust-to-gas ratios for the four spiral galaxies of our sample. We find that NGC 2841, NGC 3184 and NGC 3351 have dust masses of 6.5-9.1 $\times$ 10$^7$ M$\odot$, which are a factor of $\sim$10 higher than the value found for NGC 3077. This result shows that NGC 3077 is a dust deficient gal…
Using the GADGET-2 N-body code, we make a study of the galaxy morphology and merging time due to two interacting galaxies (for the same types and different sizes and masses, $1:1$ and $1:10$ ratio masses) merging due to gravity interaction. This is done for different initial relative orientation and rotation of these galaxies (modes of interaction) but with the same relative bulge separation and the same relative initial velocities. It was found that the resulting galaxy morphology resemble many of the observed galaxies in our Universe, and that, in general, a binary galaxy system with 1:10 ma…
We present surface photometry and stellar kinematics of NGC 4264, a lenticular galaxy in the region of the Virgo Cluster undergoing a tidal interaction with its neighbour, NGC 4261. We measured the bar radius and strength from SDSS imaging and the bar pattern speed from MUSE integral-field spectroscopy. We find that NGC 4264 hosts a strong and large bar, which is rotating fast. The accurate measurement of the bar rotation rate allows us to exclude that the formation of the bar was triggered by the ongoing interaction.

We use cosmological hydrodynamical galaxy formation simulations from the NIHAO project to investigate the response of cold dark matter (CDM) haloes to baryonic processes. Previous work has shown that the halo response is primarily a function of the ratio between galaxy stellar mass and total virial mass, and the density threshold above which gas is eligible to form stars, $n [{\rm cm}^{-3}]$. At low $n$ all simulations in the literature agree that dwarf galaxy haloes are cuspy, but at high $n\ge 100$ there is no consensus. We trace halo contraction in dwarf galaxies with $n\ge 100$ reported in…
Galaxy observations and N-body cosmological simulations produce conflicting dark matter halo density profiles for galaxy central regions. While simulations suggest a cuspy and universal density profile (UDP) of this region, the majority of observations favor variable profiles with a core in the center. In this paper, we investigate the convergency of standard N-body simulations, especially in the cusp region, following the approach proposed by \protect{\citep{13}}. We simulate the well known Hernquist model using the SPH code Gadget-3 and consider the full array of dynamical parameters of the …
We present an analysis of physical and morphological properties of an interacting pair of dwarf galaxies UGC 4703 located at the vicinity of an isolated Milky-Way (MW) type spiral galaxy NGC 2718. Based on the comparison of physical and morphological properties with that of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC), we report that the UGC 4703 pair-NGC 2718 system is probably an LMC-SMC-MW analogue. Located at a sky projected distance of 81 kpc from NGC 2718, we find that UGC 4703 is clearly interacting with its nearby smaller mass companion UGC 4703B forming a bridge of stellar stre…
We compare proposed solutions to the core vs cusp issue of spiral galaxies, which has also been framed as a diversity problem, and demonstrate that the cuspiness of dark matter halos is correlated with the stellar surface brightness. We compare the rotation curve fits to the SPARC sample from a self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) model, which self-consistently includes the impact of baryons on the halo profile, and hydrodynamical N-body simulations with cold dark matter (CDM). The SIDM model predicts a strong correlation between the core size and the stellar surface density, and it provides th…
We use a new mass modelling method, GravSphere, to measure the central dark matter density profile of the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Draco's star formation shut down long ago, making it a prime candidate for hosting a 'pristine' dark matter cusp, unaffected by stellar feedback during galaxy formation. We first test GravSphere on a suite of tidally stripped mock 'Draco'-like dwarfs. We show that we are able to correctly infer the dark matter density profile of both cusped and cored mocks within our 95% confidence intervals. While we obtain only a weak inference on the logarithmic slope of t…
Hubble Space Telescope images of the galaxy cluster Abell 2261, obtained as part of the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble, show that the brightest galaxy in the cluster, A2261-BCG, has the largest core yet detected in any galaxy. The cusp radius of A2261-BCG is 3.2 kpc, twice as big as the next largest core known, and ~3x bigger than those typically seen in the most luminous BCGs. The morphology of the core in A2261-BCG is also unusual, having a flat or even slightly-depressed interior surface brightness profile, rather than the typical shallow cusp. This implies that the galaxy…

Efficient expansions of the gravitational field of (dark) haloes have two main uses in the modelling of galaxies: first, they provide a compact representation of numerically-constructed (or real) cosmological haloes, incorporating the effects of triaxiality, lopsidedness or other distortion. Secondly, they provide the basis functions for self-consistent field expansion algorithms used in the evolution of $N$-body systems. We present a new family of biorthogonal potential-density pairs constructed using the Hankel transform of the Laguerre polynomials. The lowest-order density basis functions a…

We performed a series of high-resolution $N$-body simulations to examine whether dark matter candidates in the form of primordial black holes (PBHs) can solve the cusp-core problem in low-mass dwarf galaxies. If some fraction of the dark matter in low-mass dwarf galaxies consists of PBHs and the rest is cold dark matter, dynamical heating of the cold dark matter by the PBHs induces a cusp-to-core transition in the total dark matter profile. The mechanism works for PBHs in the 25-100 M$_{\sun}$ mass window, consistent with the LIGO detections, but requires a lower limit on the PBH mass fraction…
In this paper we examine the effect of the formation and evolution of the disk galaxy on the distribution of dark halo matter. We have made simulations of isolated dark matter (DM) halo and two component (DM + baryons). N-body technique was used for stellar and DM particles and TVD MUSCL scheme for gas-dynamic simulations. The simulations include the processes of star formation, stellar feedback, heating and cooling of the interstellar medium. The results of numerical experiments with high spatial resolution let us to conclude in two main findings. First, accounting of star formation and super…
We use 31 simulated galaxies from the MaGICC project to investigate the effects of baryonic feedback on the density profiles of dark matter (DM) haloes. The sample covers a wide mass range: 9.4e9<Mhalo/Msun<7.8e11, hosting galaxies with stellar masses: 5.0e5<M*/Msun<8.3e10, i.e. from dwarf to L*. The galaxies are simulated with several baryonic prescriptions, including a range of stellar feedbacks. The main result is a clear dependence of the inner slope of the DM density profile, α in ρr^α, on the ratio between stellar-to-halo mass (M*/Mhalo). This relation is independent of the stellar feedb…
The inner profile of Dark Matter (DM) halos remains one of the central problems in small-scale cosmology. At present, the problem can not be resolved in dwarf spheroidal galaxies due to a degeneracy between the DM profile and the velocity anisotropy beta of the stellar population. We discuss a method which can break the degeneracy by exploiting 3D positions and 1D line-of-sight (LOS) velocities. With the full 3D spatial information, we can determine precisely what fraction of each stars LOS motion is in the radial and tangential direction. This enables us to infer the anisotropy parameter beta…
We present sub-mm continuum and heterodyne data of the interacting galaxy NGC 3627, obtained with the HHT and APEX. We find significant changes in the molecular line ratios over small scales in the southeastern part of this galaxy. The kinematics of the CO(2-1) line, as well as the morphology in the 870um continuum emission, suggest a continuation of the western spiral arm on the east side of the galaxy's central area. This continued spiral arm crosses the normal eastern spiral arm in an area which shows an unusual magnetic field configuration. This spiral arm crossing, independently of if it'…
The core-cusp problem remains as one of the unsolved discrepancies between observations and theories predicted by the standard paradigm of cold dark matter (CDM) cosmology. To solve this problem, we perform N-body simulations to study the nonlinear response of CDM halos to the variance of the gravitational potential induced by gas removal from galaxy centers. In this study, we focus on the timescale of the gas ejection, which is strongly correlated with stellar activities, and demonstrate that it is one of the key factors in determining the dynamical response of CDM halos. The results of simul…
We use cosmological hydrodynamical galaxy formation simulations from the NIHAO project to investigate the impact of the threshold for star formation on the response of the dark matter (DM) halo to baryonic processes. The fiducial NIHAO threshold, $n=10\, {\rm cm}^{-3}$, results in strong expansion of the DM halo in galaxies with stellar masses in the range $10^{7.5} < M_{star} < 10^{9.5} M_{\odot}$. We find that lower thresholds such as $n=0.1$ (as employed by the EAGLE/APOSTLE and Illustris/AURIGA projects) do not result in significant halo expansion at any mass scale. Halo expansion driven b…
