The study explores machine learning methods for revealing chemical sensitivity in Helium spin-echo spectroscopy, in order to obtain ultra-sensitive surface analytic technique. We model bi-species co-adsorbed systems and demonstrate that by using deep-learning neural-networks partial surface concentrations are obtainable. An example system of particles with mass 50 and 100 a.m.u was tested with characteristic inter-adsorbate and adsorbate-substrate interactions, with partial surface concentrations being resolvable up to 20% occupancy of adsorption sites, and with modestly high noise level of 4%.
Modern quantum chemistry can make quantitative predictions on an immense array of chemical systems. However, the interpretation of those predictions is often complicated by the complex wave function expansions used. Here we show that an exceptionally simple algebraic construction allows for defining atomic core and valence orbitals, polarized by the molecular environment, which can exactly represent self-consistent field wave functions. This construction provides an unbiased and direct connection between quantum chemistry and empirical chemical concepts, and can be used, for example, to calcul…
On the time scales accessible to atomistic numerical modelling, chemical reactions are considered rare events. Atomistic simulations are typically biased along a low-dimensional representation of a chemical reaction in an atomic structure space, i.e., along the collective variable, to accelerate sampling of these improbable events. However, suitable collective variables are often complicated to guess due to the complexity of the transitions. Therefore, we present an automatic method of generating robust collective variables from atomic representation vectors, using either fixed Behler-Parrinel…
This editorial introduces the J. Phys. B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics Special Issue "Atomic and Molecular Processes in the Ultracold Regime, the Chemical Regime and Astrophysics" dedicated to Professor Alexander Dalgarno (1928-2015). After a brief biographical review, short summaries of the contributed papers and their relations to some of Prof. Dalgarno's work are given.
We introduce a fingerprint representation of molecules based on a Fourier series of atomic radial distribution functions. This fingerprint is unique (except for chirality), continuous, and differentiable with respect to atomic coordinates and nuclear charges. It is invariant with respect to translation, rotation, and nuclear permutation, and requires no pre-conceived knowledge about chemical bonding, topology, or electronic orbitals. As such it meets many important criteria for a good molecular representation, suggesting its usefulness for machine learning models of molecular properties traine…
We demonstrate the implementation of a simple time-of-flight (ToF) mass spectrometer with medium-mass resolution ($m/Δm\sim50$) geared towards the demands of atomic, molecular, and chemical physics experiments. By utilizing a novel radial ion extraction scheme from a linear quadrupole trap, a device with large trap capacity and high optical access is realized without sacrificing mass resolution. Here we describe the construction and implementation of the device as well as present representative ToF spectra. We conclude by demonstrating the flexibility of the device with proof-of-principle expe…

We investigate entirely electronic torsional vibrational modes in linear cumulene chains. The carbon nuclei of a cumulene are positioned along the primary axis so they can participate only in transverse and longitudinal motions. However, the interatomic electronic clouds behave as a torsion spring with remarkable torsional stiffness. The collective dynamics of these clouds can be described in terms of electronic vibrational quanta, which we name torsitons. It is shown that the group velocity of the wavepacket of torsitons is much higher than the typical speed of sound, because of the small mas…
We have designed a new method to fit the energy and atomic forces using a single artificial neural network (SANN) for any number of chemical species present in a molecular system. The traditional approach for fitting the potential energy surface (PES) for a multicomponent (MC) system using artificial neural network (ANN) is to consider n number of networks for n number of chemical species in the system. This shoots the computational cost and makes it difficult to apply to a system containing more number of species. We present a new strategy of using a SANN to compute energy and forces of a che…
Starting from a multichannel quantum-defect theory, we derive analytic descriptions of a magnetic Feshbach resonance in an arbitrary partial wave $l$, and the atomic interactions around it. An analytic formula, applicable to both broad and narrow resonances of arbitrary $l$, is presented for ultracold atomic scattering around a Feshbach resonance. Other related issues addressed include (a) the parametrization of a magnetic Feshbach resonance of arbitrary $l$, (b) rigorous definitions of "broad" and "narrow" resonances of arbitrary $l$ and their different scattering characteristics, and (c) the…
In open-shell atoms and ions, processes such as photoionization, combination (Raman) scattering, electron scattering and recombination, are often mediated by many-electron compound resonances. We show that their interference (neglected in the independent-resonance approximation) leads to a coherent contribution, which determines the energy-averaged total cross sections of electron- and photon-induced reactions obtained using the optical theorem. In contrast, the partial cross sections (e.g., electron recombination, or photon Raman scattering) are dominated by the stochastic contributions. Thus…
We present an analytic model of the refractive index for matter waves propagating through atomic or molecular gases. The model, which combines a WKB treatment of the long range attraction with the Fraunhofer model treatment of the short range repulsion, furnishes a refractive index in compelling agreement with recent experiments of Jacquey et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 240405 (2007)] on Li atom matter waves passing through dilute noble gases. We show that the diffractive contribution, which arises from scattering by a two dimensional "hard core" of the potential, is essential for obtaining a co…
