We present the UV photometry of the globular cluster NGC 1261 using images acquired with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on-board ASTROSAT. We performed PSF photometry on four near-UV (NUV) and two far-UV (FUV) images and constructed UV colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), in combination with HST, Gaia, and ground-based optical photometry for member stars. We detected the full horizontal branch (HB) in NUV, blue HB in the FUV and identified two extreme HB (EHB) stars. HB stars have a tight sequence in UV-optical CMDs well-fitted with isochrones generated (12.6 Gyr age, [Fe/H] = -1.27 metallicity) using updated BaSTI-IAC models. Effective temperatures (Teff), luminosities and radii of bright HB stars were estimated using spectral energy distribution. As we detect the complete sample of UV bright HB stars, the hot end of the HB distribution is found to terminate at the G-jump (Teff ~ 11500 K). The two EHB stars, fitted well with single spectra, have Teff= 31,000 K and a mass = 0.495Msun and follow the same Teff-Radius relation of the blue HB stars. We constrain the formation pathways of these EHB stars to extreme mass loss in the RGB phase (either due to rotation or enhanced Helium), OR early hot-flash scenario.
We present the results obtained from Near-UV observations of the cluster NGC 5466 taken with UVIT onboard AstroSat to study the radial distribution of Blue Straggler Stars (BSSs), covering the cluster region up to a radius of 14$'$. Our study confirms that the BSSs are more centrally concentrated than Horizontal Branch (HB) stars in the cluster. We do not find a statistically significant rising trend in the radial distribution of BSSs for the outer regions, as most of the previously catalogued BSSs that are located in the cluster outskirts were found to be non-members, quasars or galaxies. Thi…
A recent study of hot (20,000 to 30,000 K) extreme horizontal branch (EHB) stars in globular clusters (GCs) has led to the discovery of their variability. It is suggested that this variability is driven by the projected rotation of magnetic spots on the stellar surfaces and is expected to have higher amplitudes at shorter wavelengths. Here, we present the analysis of such hot stars in the massive GC NGC 2808 using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT), aboard AstroSat. We use the UVIT data in combination with the Hubble Space Telescope UV Globular Cluster Survey (HUGS) data for the central …
We present the far-UV (FUV) photometry of images acquired with UVIT on AstroSat to probe the horizontal branch (HB) population of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 2298. UV-optical color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) are constructed for member stars in combination with HST UV Globular Cluster Survey (HUGS) data for the central region and Gaia and ground-based photometric data for the outer region. Blue HB (BHB) sequence with a spread and four hot HB stars are detected in all FUV-optical CMDs and are compared with theoretical updated BaSTI isochrones and synthetic HB models with a range in helium a…

NGC 7789 is a $\sim$1.6 Gyr old, populous open cluster located at $\sim$2000 pc. We characterize the blue straggler stars (BSS) of this cluster using the Ultraviolet (UV) data from the UVIT/AstroSat. We present spectral energy distributions (SED) of 15 BSS candidates constructed using multi-wavelength data ranging from UV to IR wavelengths. In 8 BSS candidates, a single temperature SED is found to be satisfactory. We discover hot companions in 5 BSS candidates. The hot companions with Teff $\sim$11750-15500 K, R $\sim$0.069-0.242 R$_{\odot}$, and L $\sim$0.25-1.55 L$_{\odot}$, are most likely …
We present the results obtained from the UV photometry of the globular cluster NGC 1261 using Far-UV (FUV) and Near-UV (NUV) images acquired with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard the Astrosat satellite. We utilized the UVIT data combined with HST, GAIA, and ground-based optical photometric data to construct the different UV colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). We detected blue HB (BHB), and two extreme HB (EHB) stars in FUV, whereas full HB, i.e., red HB (RHB), BHB as well as EHB is detected in NUV CMDs. The 2 EHB stars, identified in both NUV and FUV, are confirmed members of the…
We present the UV photometry of the old open cluster NGC188 obtained using images acquired with Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on board the ASTROSAT satellite, in two far-UV (FUV) and one near-UV (NUV) filters. UVIT data is utilised in combination with optical photometric data to construct the optical and UV colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). In the FUV images, we detect only hot and bright blue straggler stars (BSSs), one hot subdwarf, and one white dwarf (WD) candidate. In the NUV images, we detect members up to a faintness limit of ~22 mag including 21 BSSs, 2 yellow straggler stars (Y…
We study an intermediate-age open cluster NGC 2506 using the \textit{ASTROSAT}/UVIT data and other archival data. We identified 2175 cluster members using a machine learning-based algorithm, ML--MOC, on Gaia EDR3 data. Among the cluster members detected in UVIT filters, F148W, F154W, and F169M, we detect 9 blue straggler stars (BSS), 3 yellow straggler stars (YSS) and 3 red clump (RC) stars. We construct multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these objects to characterize them and to estimate their parameters. We discovered hot companions to 3 BSS, 2 YSS and 3 RC candidates a…
We present the first far-UV (FUV) imaging results of the intermediate-age Galactic open cluster NGC 2818 that has a Planetary nebula (PN) within the field using images taken from the Ultra-violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) aboard AstroSat. We identify cluster members by combining UVIT-detected sources with Gaia EDR3 data. We detect four bright and hot blue straggler stars (BSSs) and two yellow straggler stars (YSSs) based on their location in the optical and FUV-optical color-magnitude diagrams. Based on the parameters estimated using Spectral Energy Distribution (SED), we infer that BSSs are ei…
We report the discovery of extremely low-mass white dwarfs (ELM WDs) as a companion of blue straggler stars (BSSs) in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 362 using images from AstroSats Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) for 26 FUV bright member BSSs are created using data from the UVIT, UVOT, Gaia EDR3, and the 2.2 m ESO/MPI telescope. A single SED is fitted to 14 BSSs, whereas double-SED fits revealed ELM WDs as binary companions in 12 of the 26 BSSs studied. The effective temperature, radius, luminosity and mass of the 12 ELM WDs are found to have a ra…
We present early results from the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard the ASTROSAT observatory. We report the discovery of a hot companion associated with one of the blue straggler stars (BSSs) in the old open cluster, NGC188. Using fluxes measured in four filters in UVIT's Far-UV (FUV) channel, and two filters in the near-UV (NUV) channel, we have constructed the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the star WOCS-5885, after combining with flux measurements from GALEX, UIT, UVOT, SPITZER, WISE and several ground-based facilities. The resulting SED spans a wavelength range of 0.15~$…
Aims. We present a new technique to estimate the relative ages of multiple stellar populations hosted by five globular clusters: NGC 104 (47 Tuc), NGC 6121 (M4), NGC 6352, NGC 6362 and NGC 6723. Methods. We used the catalogs of the database "HST UV Globular cluster Survey (HUGS)" to create color-magnitude and two-color diagrams of the Globular Clusters. We identified the multiple populations within each globular cluster, and we divided them into two main stellar populations: POPa or first generation (1G) and POPb, composed of all the successive generations of stars. The new technique allows us…
We present DECam imaging for the peculiar Galactic globular clusters NGC1851, NGC1904 (M79), NGC2298 and NGC2808. Our deep photometry reveals that all the clusters have an important contribution of stars beyond their King tidal radii and present tails with different morphologies. We have also explored the surroundings of the clusters where the presence of the Canis Major overdensity and/or the low Galactic latitude Monoceros ring at d~8kpc is evident. A second stellar system is found at d~17kpc and spans at least 18deg x 15deg in the sky. As one of the possible scenarios to explain that featur…
We derived Potassium abundances in red giant branch stars in the Galactic globular clusters NGC104 (144 stars), NGC6752 (134 stars) and NGC6809 (151 stars) using high-resolution spectra collected with FLAMES at the ESO - Very Large Telescope. In the considered samples we do not find significant intrinsic spreads in [K/Fe] (confirming the previous findings by Carretta et al.), at variance with the cases of the massive clusters NGC2419 and NGC2808. Additionally, marginally significant [K/Fe]-[O/Fe] anti-correlations are found in NGC104 and NGC6809, and [K/Fe]-[Na/Fe] correlations are found in NG…
We have performed photometric analysis of four Galactic globular clusters (GGCs): NGC 4147, NGC 4590, NGC 5053 and NGC 7492 using far-UV and near-UV filters of the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on-board AstroSat. With the help of color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), we have identified 150 blue horizontal branch stars (BHBs), and 40 blue straggler stars (BSS) in the four GGCs. We study the temperature and radial distribution of BHBs and BSS for the four GGCs.
We explore the possibility of searching for extratidal features around the Galactic globular cluster NGC362 using the Gaia DR2 together with a modified version of a classical statistical decontamination algorithm. Our results suggest that an important stellar component is associated with this globular cluster, which is perfectly distinguishable from the populations in the Small Magellanic Cloud and that of the nearby NGC104 (47 Tucanae). We thus confirm once again the power of Gaia to disentangle different stellar components along the same line-of-sight.
Recently, Kundu et al (2019) reported that the globular cluster NGC 5024 (M53) possesses five extra-tidal RR Lyrae. In fact, four of them were instead known members of a nearby globular cluster NGC 5053. The status of the remaining extra-tidal RR Lyrae is controversial depending on the adopted tidal radius of NGC 5024. We have also searched for additional extra-tidal RR Lyrae within an area of $\sim8$~deg$^2$ covering both globular clusters. This includes other known RR Lyrae within the search area, as well as stars that fall within the expected range of magnitudes and colors for RR Lyrae (and…
NGC 2419 is a massive outer halo Galactic globular cluster whose stars have previously been shown to have somewhat peculiar abundance patterns. We have observed seven luminous giants that are members of NGC 2419 with Keck/HIRES at reasonable SNR. One of these giants is very peculiar, with an extremely low [Mg/Fe] and high [K/Fe] but normal abundances of most other elements. The abundance pattern does not match the nucleosynthetic yields of any supernova model. The other six stars show abundance ratios typical of inner halo Galactic globular clusters, represented here by a sample of giants in t…
In this paper we present photometric CCD observations of the globular cluster NGC 6093 (M80) in filters B, V , R and I. We produce the colour-magnitude diagrams for this object and obtain values for its metallicity [Fe/H], reddening E(V-B), E(V-I) and distance modulus (m - M)_0.
We present metallicities for red giant stars in the globular cluster NGC 6273 based on intermediate resolution GMOS-S spectra of the calcium triplet region. For the 42 radial velocity members with reliable calcium triplet line strength measurements, we obtain metallicities, [Fe/H], using calibrations established from standard globular clusters. We confirm the presence of an intrinsic abundance dispersion identified by Johnson et al. (2015). The total range in [Fe/H] is ~1.0 dex and after taking into account the measurement errors, the intrinsic abundance dispersion is σ[Fe/H] = 0.17 dex. Among…
We present radial velocities and chemical abundances for red giant branch stars in the Galactic bulge globular clusters NGC 6342 and NGC 6366. The velocities and abundances are based on measurements of high resolution (R > 20,000) spectra obtained with the MMT-Hectochelle and WIYN-Hydra spectrographs. We find that NGC 6342 has a heliocentric radial velocity of +112.5 km/s (sigma = 8.6 km/s), NGC 6366 has a heliocentric radial velocity of -122.3 km/s (sigma = 1.5 km/s), and that both clusters have nearly identical metallicities ([Fe/H] ~ -0.55). NGC 6366 shows evidence of a moderately extended …
We present results of time series photometry to search for variable stars in the field of metal-poor globular cluster NGC 4590 (M68). Periods have been revised for 40 known variables and no significant changes were found. A considerable change in Blazhko effect for V25 has been detected. Among nine newly discovered variable candidates, 5 stars are of RRc Bailey type variables while 4 stars are unclassified. The variable stars V10, V21, V50 and V51 are found to be cluster members based on the radial velocity data taken from literature.
Using parallaxes from Gaia DR2, we estimate the distance to the globular clusters 47 Tuc and NGC 362, taking advantage of the background stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud and quasars to account for various parallax systematics. We found the parallax to be dependent on the Gaia DR2 G apparent magnitude for stars with $13<\textrm{G}<18$ , where brighter stars have a lower parallax zero point than fainter stars. The distance to 47 Tuc was found to be $4.45\pm0.01\pm0.12$ kpc, and for NGC 362 $8.54\pm0.20\pm0.44$ kpc with random and systematic errors listed respectively. This is the first time a…
The internal dynamics of multiple stellar populations in Globular Clusters (GCs) provides unique constraints on the physical processes responsible for their formation. Specifically, the present-day kinematics of cluster stars, such as rotation and velocity dispersion, seems to be related to the initial configuration of the system. In recent work (Milone et al. 2018), we analyzed for the first time the kinematics of the different stellar populations in NGC0104 (47Tucanae) over a large field of view, exploiting the Gaia Data Release 2 proper motions combined with multi-band ground-based photomet…
Context. Extratidal stars are stellar bodies that end up outside the tidal radius of a cluster as a result of internal processes or external forces acting upon it. The presence and spatial distribution of these stars can give us insights into the past evolution of a cluster inside our Galaxy. Aims. Previous works suggest that globular clusters, when explored in detail, show evidence of extratidal stars. We aim to search for possible extratidal stars in the Galactic globular clusters NGC 6397, NGC 2808, and NGC 6266 using the photometry and proper motion measurements from Gaia DR2 database (Gai…
We report on the serendipitous discovery of a carbon star near the centre of the low-metallicity globular cluster NGC 6426. We determined its membership and chemical properties using medium-resolution spectra. The radial velocity of -159 km/s makes it a member of the cluster. We used photometric data from the literature and the COMARCS stellar atmospheric models to derive its luminosity, effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, and approximate C, N, and O abundance ratios. According to these properties, we suggest that this star is a genuine carbon rich low-metallicity AGB star.
Stellar population studies of globular clusters have suggested that the brightest clusters in the Galaxy might actually be the remnant nuclei of dwarf spheroidal galaxies. If the present Galactic globular clusters formed within larger stellar systems, they are likely surrounded by extra-tidal halos and/or tails made up of stars that were tidally stripped from their parent systems. The stellar surroundings around globular clusters are therefore one of the best places to look for the remnants of an ancient dwarf galaxy. Here an attempt is made to search for tidal debris around the supernovae enr…
We present an observational estimate of the fraction and distribution of dark mass in the innermost region of the two Galactic globular clusters NGC 6218 (M12) and NGC 288. Such an assessment has been made by comparing the dynamical and luminous mass profiles derived from an accurate analysis of the most extensive spectroscopic and photometric surveys performed on these stellar systems. We find that non-luminous matter constitutes more than 60% of the total mass in the region probed by our data (R<1.6 arcmin~r_h) in both clusters. We have carefully analyzed the effects of binaries and tidal he…
We derive relative proper motions of stars in the fields of the globular clusters M12, NGC 6362, M4, M55, M22, NGC 6752, NGC 3201, M30, M10, NGC 362, M5, and 47 Tucanae based on data collected between 1997 and 2015 with the 1-m Swope telescope of Las Campanas Observatory. We determine membership class and membership probability for over 446 000 objects, and show that these are efficient methods for separating field stars from members of the cluster. In particular, membership probabilities of variable stars and blue/yellow/red stragglers are determined. Finally, we find absolute proper motions …
We present a comparison of CN bandstrength variations in the high-metallicity globular clusters NGC 6356 and NGC 6528 with those measured in the old open clusters NGC 188, NCG 2158 and NGC 7789. Star-to-star abundance variations, of which CN differences are a readily observable sign, are commonplace in moderate-metallicity halo globular clusters but are unseen in the field or in open clusters. We find that the open clusters have narrow, unimodal distributions of CN bandstrength, as expected from the literature, while the globular clusters have broad, bimodal distributions of CN bandstrength, s…
The blue straggler stars (BSSs) are main-sequence (MS) stars, which have evaded stellar evolution by acquiring mass while on the MS. The detection of extremely low mass (ELM) white dwarf (WD) companions to two BSSs and one yellow straggler star (YSS) from our earlier study using UVIT/ASTROSAT, as well as WD companions to main-sequence stars (known as blue lurkers) suggest a good fraction of post-mass transfer binaries in M67. Using deeper UVIT observations, here we report the detection of another blue lurker in M67, with an ELM WD companion. The post-mass transfer systems with the presence of …
Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) is one of the payloads on the first Indian multi wavelength satellite ASTROSAT expected to be launched by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in the year 2015. We have performed simulations of UV studies of old open clusters for the UVIT. The colour magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and spatial appearances have been created using 10 filters of FUV channel (130 - 180 nm) and NUV channel (200 - 300nm) available for observations on the UVIT, for three old open clusters M67, NGC 188 and NGC 6791. The CMDs are simulated for different filter combinations, and they…
We derive relative proper motions of stars in the fields of globular clusters M4, M12, M22, NGC 3201, NGC 6362 and NGC 6752 based on a uniform data set collected between 1997 and 2008. We assign a membership class for each star with a measured proper motion, and show that these membership classes can be successfully used to eliminate field stars from color-magnitude diagrams of the clusters. They also allow for the efficient selection of rare objects such as blue/yellow/red stragglers and stars from the asymptotic giant branch. Tables with proper motions and photometry of over 87000 stars are …
We have measured the absolute proper motions of globular clusters NGC 6397, NGC 6626 (M 22) and NGC 6656 (M 28) as part of our ongoing Southern Proper-Motion Program. The reference system is the ICRS via Hipparcos stars for these three low galactic latitude clusters. Formal errors range between ~0.3 and 0.7 mas/yr. Notable is the result for NGC 6397 which differs by 2.5 mas/yr from two HST determinations, while agreeing with previous ground-based ones. We determine orbits for all three clusters in an axisymmetric and barred model of the Galaxy and discuss these in the context of globular-clust…
In this work we present a method to identify possible members of globular clusters using data from Gaia DR2. The method consists of two stages: the first one based on a clustering algorithm, and the second one based on the analysis of the projected spatial distribution of stars with different proper motions. In order to confirm that the clusters members extracted by the method correspond to actual globular clusters, the spatial distribution, the vector point diagram of the proper motions and the colour-magnitude diagrams are analysed. We apply the developed method to eight clusters: NGC 1261, …
(Abridged) Globular clusters host multiple stellar populations showing different sodium enrichments. These various populations can be observed along the main sequence, red giant and horizontal branch phases. Recently it was shown, however, that at least in the globular cluster NGC 6752, no sodium-rich stars are observed along the early asymptotic giant branch, posing an apparent problem for stellar evolution. We present an explanation for this lack of sodium-rich stars in this region of the colour-magnitude diagram.
We measure the C+N+O abundance sum in red giant stars in two Galactic globular clusters, NGC 1851 and NGC 6752. NGC 1851 has a split subgiant branch which could be due to different ages or C+N+O content while NGC 6752 is representative of the least complex globular clusters. For NGC 1851 and NGC 6752, we obtain average values of A(C+N+O) = 8.16 +/- 0.10 (σ= 0.34) and 7.62 +/- 0.02 (σ= 0.06), respectively. When taking into account the measurement errors, we find a constant C+N+O abundance sum in NGC 6752. The C+N+O abundance dispersion is only 0.06 dex, and such a result requires that the sourc…
(abridged) We have observed almost 1/3 of the globular clusters in the Milky Way, targeting distant and/or highly reddened objects, besides a few reference clusters. A large sample of red giant stars was observed with FORS2@VLT/ESO at R ~ 2,000. The method for derivation of stellar parameters is presented with application to six reference clusters. We aim at deriving the stellar parameters effective temperature, gravity, metallicity and alpha-element enhancement, as well as radial velocity, for membership confirmation of individual stars in each cluster. We analyse the spectra collected for th…
This paper presents the chemical abundance analysis of a sample of 18 giant stars in 3 old globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud, namely NGC 1786, NGC 2210 and NGC 2257. The derived iron content is [Fe/H]= --1.75+-0.01 dex (sigma= 0.02 dex), --1.65+-0.02 dex (sigma= 0.04 dex) and --1.95+-0.02 dex (sigma= 0.04 dex) for NGC 1786, NGC 2210 and NGC 2257, respectively. All the clusters exhibit similar abundance ratios, with enhanced values (+0.30 dex) of [alpha/Fe], consistent with the Galactic Halo stars, thus indicating that these clusters have formed from a gas enriched by Type II SNe.…
We use Cycle 21 Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations and HST archival ACS Treasury observations of Galactic Globular Clusters to find and characterize two stellar populations in NGC 5024 (M53), NGC 5272 (M3), and NGC 6352. For these three clusters, both single and double-population analyses are used to determine a best fit isochrone(s). We employ a sophisticated Bayesian analysis technique to simultaneously fit the cluster parameters (age, distance, absorption, and metallicity) that characterize each cluster. For the two-population analysis, unique population level helium values are also …
Detailed chemical abundances for five stars in two Galactic globular clusters, NGC 5466 and NGC 5024, are presented from high resolution optical (from the Hobby- Eberley Telescope) and infrared spectra (from the SDSS-III APOGEE survey). We find [Fe/H] = -1.97 +/- 0.13 dex for NGC 5466, and [Fe/H] = -2.06 +/- 0.13 dex for NGC 5024, and the typical abundance pattern for globular clusters for the remaining elements, e.g., both show evidence for mixing in their light element abundance ratios (C, N), and AGB contributions in their heavy element abundances (Y, Ba, and Eu). These clusters were select…
In the last years, photometric and spectroscopic evidence has demonstrated that many, maybe all the Globular Clusters (GC) host multiple stellar populations. High-resolution spectroscopy has established that, while most GCs are mono-metallic with no significant abundance spread in $s$-elements, in all the globulars studied to date the presence of different stellar generation is inferred by the Na-O and the C-N anticorrelations. In this context, NGC 1851 and NGC 6656 are among the most intriguing clusters. Contrary to the majority of GCs, they host two groups of stars with different s-elements …
We have conducted a photometric survey of the globular cluster NGC 6397 in a search for variable stars. We obtained ~11h of time-resolved photometric images with one ne European Southern Observatory-Very Large Telescope using the FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph imager distributed over two consecutive nights. We analyzed 8391 light curves of stars brighter than magnitude 23 with the 465 nm-filter, and we identified 412 variable stars, reaching ~ 4.8 +- 0.2 per cent of variability with timescales between 0.004 and 2d, with amplitudes variation greater than +- 0.2 mag.
The pulsation periods of long period variables (LPVs) depend on their mass and helium abundance as well as on their luminosity and metal abundance. Comparison of the observed periods of LPVs in globular clusters with models is capable of revealing the amount of mass lost on the giant branch and the helium abundance.} {We aim to determine the amount of mass loss that has occurred on the giant branches of the low metallicity globular clusters NGC 362 and NGC 2808. We also aim to see if the LPVs in NGC 2808 can tell us about helium abundance variations in this cluster.} We have used optical monit…
The "stellar" solution to the cosmological lithium problem proposes that surface depletion of lithium in low-mass, metal-poor stars can reconcile the lower abundances found for Galactic halo stars with the primordial prediction. Globular clusters are ideal environments for studies of the surface evolution of lithium, with large number statistics possible to obtain for main sequence stars as well as giants. We discuss the Li abundances measured for >450 stars in the globular cluster NGC6397, focusing on the evidence for lithium depletion and especially highlighting how the inferred abundances a…
We derive [K/Fe] abundance ratios for 119 stars in the globular cluster NGC 2808, all of them having O, Na, Mg and Al abundances homogeneously measured in previous works. We detect an intrinsic star-to-star spread in the Potassium abundance. Moreover [K/Fe] abundance ratios display statistically significant correlations with [Na/Fe] and [Al/Fe], and anti-correlations with [O/Fe] and [Mg/Fe]. All the four Mg deficient stars ([Mg/Fe]<0.0) discovered so far in NGC 2808 are enriched in K by ~0.3 dex with respect to those with normal [Mg/Fe]. NGC 2808 is the second globular cluster, after NGC 2419,…
