We review the history of space mission in Korea focusing on the field of astronomy and astrophysics. For each mission, scientific motivation and achievement are reviewed together with some technical details of the program including mission schedule. This review includes the ongoing and currently approved missions as well as some planned ones. Within the admitted limitations of authors' perspectives, some comments on the future direction of space program for astronomy and astrophysics in Korea are made at the end of this review.
CubeSats have the potential to expand astrophysical discovery space, complementing ground-based electromagnetic and gravitational-wave observatories. The CubeSat design specifications help streamline delivery of instrument payloads to space. CubeSat planners have more options for tailoring orbits to fit observational needs and may have more flexibility in rapidly rescheduling observations to respond to transients. With over 1000 CubeSats launched, there has been a corresponding increase in the availability and performance of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components compatible with the CubeSa…
Several different controlled vocabularies have been developed and used by the astronomical community, each designed to serve a specific need and a specific group. The Unified Astronomy Thesaurus (UAT) attempts to provide a highly structured controlled vocabulary that will be relevant and useful across the entire discipline, regardless of content or platform. As two major use cases for the UAT include classifying articles and data, we examine the UAT in comparison with the Astronomical Subject Keywords used by major publications and the JWST Science Keywords used by STScI's Astronomer's Proposa…
The search for life beyond the Solar System-a major part of the Planetary Systems thematic area of the Astro2020 Decadal process-includes the search for technological life. Although financial support for such searches at the NSF and NASA and in past decadal surveys has been weak to nonexistent, recent advances in astrobiology, astrophysics, and advances in technical capability make searches for technosignatures a compelling theme for 2020-2030 and beyond.
The Longitudinal Study of Astronomy Graduate Students (LSAGS) arose from the 2003 Women in Astronomy Conference, where it was noted that a majority of young members of the American Astronomical Society were women. The astronomy community wishes to make every effort to retain young women in astronomy, so they commissioned a longitudinal study to be conducted that would pinpoint the factors that contribute to retention in general, with a focus on differences between women and men. The LSAGS follows a cohort of people who were graduate students in astronomy or astrophysics during 2006-07. The fir…
Astronomical observations already produce vast amounts of data through a new generation of telescopes that cannot be analyzed manually. Next-generation telescopes such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and the Square Kilometer Array are planned to become operational in this decade and the next, and will increase the data volume by many orders of magnitude. The increased spatial, temporal and spectral resolution afford a powerful magnifying lens on the physical processes that underlie the data but, at the same time, generate unprecedented complexity hard to exploit for knowledge extraction…
Fundamental coding and software development skills are increasingly necessary for success in nearly every aspect of astronomical and astrophysical research as large surveys and high resolution simulations become the norm. However, professional training in these skills is inaccessible or impractical for many members of our community. Students and professionals alike have been expected to acquire these skills on their own, apart from formal classroom curriculum or on-the-job training. Despite the recognized importance of these skills, there is little opportunity to develop them - even for intere…
The astronomy community usually turns to the Astrophysics Data System for bibliometrics. When the context is cross-disciplinary, commercial products like Web of Science and Scopus are used along with related analytics tools instead. The results are often tainted by inherent problems in the chosen classification system. A review of the most common challenges and pitfalls is given. Commercial altmetrics products could be added to the evaluation toolbox in the near future despite the fact that they are best suited for promotion instead of evaluation. Norway, Denmark, and Finland have created jour…
We review some aspects of the current state of data-intensive astronomy, its methods, and some outstanding data analysis challenges. Astronomy is at the forefront of "big data" science, with exponentially growing data volumes and data rates, and an ever-increasing complexity, now entering the Petascale regime. Telescopes and observatories from both ground and space, covering a full range of wavelengths, feed the data via processing pipelines into dedicated archives, where they can be accessed for scientific analysis. Most of the large archives are connected through the Virtual Observatory fram…
We present program objectives and specifications for the first generation Ultra-Fast Astronomy (UFA) observatory which will explore a new astrophysical phase space by characterizing the variability of the optical (320 nm - 650 nm) sky in the millisecond to nanosecond timescales. One of the first objectives of the UFA observatory will be to search for optical counterparts to fast radio bursts (FRB) that can be used to identify the origins of FRB and probe the epoch of reionization and baryonic matter in the interstellar and intergalactic mediums. The UFA camera will consist of two single-photon…

The existing search tools for exploring the NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS) can be quite rich and empowering (e.g., similar and trending operators), but researchers are not yet allowed to fully leverage semantic search. For example, a query for "results from the Planck mission" should be able to distinguish between all the various meanings of Planck (person, mission, constant, institutions and more) without further clarification from the user. At ADS, we are applying modern machine learning and natural language processing techniques to our dataset of recent astronomy publications to train …
Experience suggests that structural issues in how institutional Astrophysics approaches data-driven science and the development of discovery technology may be hampering the community's ability to respond effectively to a rapidly changing environment in which increasingly complex, heterogeneous datasets are challenging our existing information infrastructure and traditional approaches to analysis. We stand at the confluence of a new epoch of multimessenger science, remote co-location of data and processing power and new observing strategies based on miniaturized spacecraft. Significant effort w…
In this paper we showcase the importance of understanding and measuring interdisciplinarity and other -disciplinarity concepts for all scientists, the role social sciences have historically played in NASA research and missions, the sparsity of social science interdisciplinarity in space and planetary sciences, including astronomy and astrophysics, while there is an imperative necessity for it, and the example of interdisciplinarity between social sciences and astrobiology. Ultimately we give voice to the scientists across all fields with respect to their needs, aspirations and experiences in t…
We are in the era of the Big Data. In Astronomy and Astrophysics, the massive amounts of data generated are, as of today, in the Peta-scale if not already in the Exa-scale. In the near future, we will see the data collected size and complexity grow further constantly, setting new challenges for data processing, reduction and analysis. This will pose new needs in terms of software and hardware solutions but also in terms of new models for resource management, access and sharing. In Astronomy and Astrophysics, in the environment of the International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA), a big wor…
A major goal for the astronomy and astrophysics communities is the pursuit of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in all ranks, from students through professional scientific researchers. Large scientific collaborations - increasingly a primary place for both professional interactions and research opportunities - can play an important role in the DEI effort. Multimessenger astronomy, a new and growing field, is based on the principle that working collaboratively produces synergies, enabling advances that would not be possible without cooperation. The nascent Multimessenger Diversity Network …

Some of the most exciting and promising areas of Astronomy research today are found at the boundaries of the discipline: the search for Exoplanets and Multi-Messenger Astronomy. In order to achieve breakthroughs in these research fields over the next decade, innovation and expansion of the digital information infrastructure which supports this research is required. Astronomy has been well-served by the existence of an open, distributed network of data centers and archives. However, institutional barriers and differing research cultures have prevented cross-disciplinary collaborations, creating…
Astronomy and astrophysics are witnessing dramatic increases in data volume as detectors, telescopes and computers become ever more powerful. During the last decade, sky surveys across the electromagnetic spectrum have collected hundreds of terabytes of astronomical data for hundreds of millions of sources. Over the next decade, the data volume will enter the petabyte domain, and provide accurate measurements for billions of sources. Astronomy and physics students are not traditionally trained to handle such voluminous and complex data sets. In this paper we describe astroML; an initiative, ba…
This article looks at philosophical aspects and questions that modern astrophysical research gives rise to. Other than cosmology, astrophysics particularly deals with understanding phenomena and processes operating at "intermediate" cosmic scales, which has rarely aroused philosophical interest so far. Being confronted with the attribution of antirealism by Ian Hacking because of its observational nature, astrophysics is equipped with a characteristic methodology that can cope with the missing possibility of direct interaction with most objects of research. In its attempt to understand the cau…
Long range observations in the field of astronomy have opened up our understanding of the Solar System, the Galaxy and the wider Universe. In this paper we discuss the idea of direct in-situ reconnaissance of nearby stellar systems, using robotic probes. In particular, we consider what additional knowledge can be learned that can only be obtained by such close encounters. This may include calibration of existing measurements, detailed observations of stellar winds, astrometry measurements of stellar parallax, refinement of our understanding of physics through the use of long baseline interfero…
Support for early career astronomers who are just beginning to explore astronomy research is imperative to increase retention of diverse practitioners in the field. Since 2010, Astrobites has played an instrumental role in engaging members of the community -- particularly undergraduate and graduate students -- in research. In this white paper, the Astrobites collaboration outlines our multi-faceted online education platform that both eases the transition into astronomy research and promotes inclusive professional development opportunities. We additionally offer recommendations for how the astr…
A review of modernization and growth of ground based optical and near-infrared astrophysical observational facilities in the globe attributed to the recent technological developments in optomechanical, electronics and computer science areas is presented. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and speckle and adaptive ground based imaging have obtained images better than 0.1 arc sec angular resolution bringing the celestial objects closer to us at least by a factor of 10 during the last two decades. From the light gathering point of view, building of large size (more than 5 meter aperture) ground based o…
The anecdotal connection between an interest in science fiction and career aspirations in astrophysics is well established. However strong statistical evidence for such a connection, and a quantitative assessment of its prevalence, has been missing. Here I report the results of two surveys examining the connection between science fiction enthusiasm and astronomical careers - first a case study of the University of Warwick Astronomy and Astrophysics group, carried out in February 2021, and second a larger survey of attendees at the UK National Astronomy Meeting in July 2022. In both surveys, a …
The Adomian Decomposition Method (ADM) is a very effective approach for solving broad classes of nonlinear partial and ordinary differential equations, with important applications in different fields of applied mathematics, engineering, physics and biology. It is the goal of the present paper to provide a clear and pedagogical introduction to the Adomian Decomposition Method and to some of its applications. In particular, we focus our attention to a number of standard first-order ordinary differential equations (the linear, Bernoulli, Riccati, and Abel) with arbitrary coefficients, and present…
Astronomy, as a field, has long encouraged the development of free, open digital infrastructure (e.g., National Research Council 2010, 2011). Examples range from simple scripts that enable individual scientific research, through software instruments for entire communities, to data reduction pipelines for telescope operations at national facilities. As with the digital infrastructure of our larger society today (e.g., Eghbal 2016), nearly all astronomical research relies on free, open source software (FOSS) written and maintained by a small number of developers. And like the physical infrastruc…
Following the survey Well-being in astrophysics that was sent out in March 2021, to establish how astrophysics researchers, primarily in France, experience their career, some of the results were published in Webb et al. (2021). Here we further analyse the data to determine if gender can cause different experiences in astrophysics. We also study the impact on the well-being of temporary staff (primarily PhD students and postdocs), compared to permanent staff. Whilst more temporary staff stated that they felt permanently overwhelmed than permanent staff, the experiences in astrophysics for the d…
This paper reviews gravitational wave sources and their detection. One of the most exciting potential sources of gravitational waves are coalescing binary black hole systems. They can occur on all mass scales and be formed in numerous ways, many of which are not understood. They are generally invisible in electromagnetic waves, and they provide opportunities for deep investigation of Einstein's general theory of relativity. Sect. 1 of this paper considers ways that binary black holes can be created in the universe, and includes the prediction that binary black hole coalescence events are likel…
