We formulate a correspondence between SU(2) monopole chains and ``spectral data'', consisting of curves in $\mathbb{CP}^1\times\mathbb{CP}^1$ equipped with parabolic line bundles. This is the analogue for monopole chains of Donaldson's association of monopoles with rational maps. The construction is based on the Nahm transform, which relates monopole chains to Higgs bundles on the cylinder. As an application, we classify charge $k$ monopole chains which are invariant under actions of $\mathbb{Z}_{2k}$. We present images of these symmetric monopole chains that were constructed using a numerical Nahm transform.

Cyclic Monopoles, Affine Toda and Spectral Curves

We show that any cyclically symmetric monopole is gauge equivalent to Nahm data given by Sutcliffe's ansatz, and so obtained from the affine Toda equations. Further the direction (the Ercolani-Sinha vector) and base point of the linearising flow in the Jacobian of the spectral curve associated to the Nahm equations arise as pull-backs of Toda data. A theorem of Accola and Fay then means that the theta-functions arising in the solution of the monopole problem reduce to the theta-functions of Toda.

On Charge-3 Cyclic Monopoles

We determine the spectral curve of charge 3 BPS su(2) monopoles with C_3 cyclic symmetry. The symmetry means that the genus 4 spectral curve covers a (Toda) spectral curve of genus 2. A well adapted homology basis is presented enabling the theta functions and monopole data of the genus 4 curve to be given in terms of genus 2 data. The Richelot correspondence, a generalization of the arithmetic mean, is used to solve for this genus 2 curve. Results of other approaches are compared.

Symetric Monopoles

We discuss $SU(2)$ Bogomolny monopoles of arbitrary charge $k$ invariant under various symmetry groups. The analysis is largely in terms of the spectral curves, the rational maps, and the Nahm equations associated with monopoles. We discuss the spectral curves and rational maps associated with $SU(2)$ Bogomolny monopoles of arbitrary charge $k$. We describe the effect on the rational maps of inverting monopoles in the plane with respect to which the rational maps are defined, and discuss the monopoles invariant under such inversion. Line bundles on spectral curves and the generalised Legendre transform construction of hyperkaehler metrics

An analogue of the correspondence between GL(k)-conjugacy classes of matricial polynomials and line bundles is given for K-conjugacy classes, where K is one of the following: maximal parabolic, maximal torus, GL(k-1) embedded diagonally. The generalised Legendre transform construction of hyperkaehler metrics is studied further, showing that many known hyperkaehler metrics (including the ones on coadjoint orbits) arise in this way, and giving a large class of new (pseudo-)hyperkaehler metrics, analogous to monopole metrics.

G2 geometry and integrable systems

We study the Hitchin component in the space of representations of the fundamental group of a Riemann surface into a split real simple Lie group in the rank 2 case. We prove that such representations are described by a conformal structure and class of Higgs bundle we call cyclic and we show cyclic Higgs bundles correspond to a form of the affine Toda equations.
