We show that Floquet chiral topological superconductivity arises naturally in Josephson junctions made of magnetic topological insulator-superconductor sandwich structures. The Josephson phase modulation associated with an applied bias voltage across the junction drives the system into the anomalous Floquet chiral topological superconductor hosting chiral Majorana edge modes in the quasienergy spectrum, with the bulk Floquet bands carrying zero Chern numbers. The bias voltage acts as a tuning parameter enabling novel dynamical topological quantum phase transitions driving the system into a myriad of exotic Majorana-carrying Floquet topological superconducting phases. Our theory establishes a new paradigm for realizing Floquet chiral topological superconductivity in solid-state systems, which should be experimentally directly accessible.
We study how a $d$-wave superconductivity is changed when illuminated by circularly-polarised light (CPL) in the repulsive Hubbard model in the strong-coupling regime. We adopt the Floquet formalism for the Gutzwiller-projected effective Hamiltonian with the time-periodic Schrieffer-Wolff transformation. We find that CPL induces a topological superconductivity with a $d+id$ pairing, which arises from the chiral spin coupling and the three-site term generated by the CPL. The latter term remains significant even for low frequencies and low intensities of the CPL. This is clearly reflected in the…
It has been shown that long-range {\it p}-wave superconductivity in a Kitaev chain can be engineered via an ac field with a high frequency [Benito et al., Phys. Rev. B 90, 205127 (2014)]. For its experimental realization, however, theoretical understanding of Floquet engineering with a broader range of driving frequencies becomes important. In this work, focusing on the ac-driven tunneling interactions of a Kitaev chain, we investigate effects from the leading correction to the high-frequency limit on the emergent {\it p}-wave superconductivity. Importantly, we find new engineered long-range {…
We analyze, analytically and numerically, a periodically driven Rashba nanowire proximity coupled to an $s$-wave superconductor using bosonization and renormalization group analysis in the regime of strong electron-electron interactions. Due to the repulsive interactions, the superconducting gap is suppressed, whereas the Floquet Zeeman gap is enhanced, resulting in a higher effective value of $g$-factor compared to the non-interacting case. The flow equations for different coupling constants, velocities, and Luttinger-liquid parameters explicitly establish that even for small initial values o…
A fully dynamic theoretical approach to layered optomagnonic structures, based on a time Floquet scattering-matrix method, is developed. Its applicability is demonstrated on a simple design of a dual photonic-magnonic cavity, formed by sandwiching a magnetic garnet thin film between two dielectric Bragg mirrors, subject to continuous excitation of a perpendicular standing spin wave. Some remarkable phenomena, including nonlinear photon-magnon interaction effects and enhanced inelastic light scattering in the strong-coupling regime, fulfilling a triple-resonance condition, are analyzed and the …
We study the intrinsic superconductivity in a dissipative Floquet electronic system in the presence of attractive interactions. Based on the functional Keldysh theory beyond the mean-field treatment, we find that the system shows a time-periodic bosonic condensation and reaches an intrinsic dissipative Floquet superconducting (SC) phase. Due to the interplay between dissipations and periodic modulations, the Floquet SC gap becomes "soft" and contains the diffusive fermionic modes with finite lifetimes. However, bosonic modes of the bosonic condensation are still propagating even in the presenc…
We study a periodically driven nanowire with Rashba-like conduction and valence bands in the presence of a magnetic field. We identify topological regimes in which the system hosts zero-energy Majorana fermions. We further investigate the effect of strong electron-electron interactions that give rise to parafermion zero energy modes hosted at the nanowire ends. The first setup we consider allows for topological phases by applying only static magnetic fields without the need of superconductivity. The second setup involves both superconductivity and time-dependent magnetic fields and allows one …
We consider a thin normal metal sandwiched between two ferromagnetic insulators. At the interfaces, the exchange coupling causes electrons within the metal to interact with magnons in the insulators. This electron-magnon interaction induces electron-electron interactions, which, in turn, can result in p-wave superconductivity. In the weak-coupling limit, we solve the gap equation numerically and estimate the critical temperature. In YIG-Au-YIG trilayers, superconductivity sets in at temperatures somewhere in the interval between 1 and 10 K. EuO-Au-EuO trilayers require a lower temperature, in …
We consider a heterostructure of semiconductor layers sandwiched between two superconductors, forming a two-dimensional Josephson junction. Applying a Zeeman field perpendicular to the junction can render a topological superconducting phase with chiral Majorana edge mode. We show that the phase difference between two superconductors can efficiently reduce the magnetic field required to achieve the chiral topological superconductivity, providing an experimentally feasible setup to realize chiral Majorana edge modes. We also construct a lattice Hamiltonian of the setup to demonstrate the chiral …
We present an experimental proposal to tune the effective lattice structure in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterobilayers with time-periodic Floquet drive. We show that elliptically polarized light with sub-terahertz frequencies $\hbarω\sim 1$ meV and moderate electric fields $E\sim0.2$~MV/cm allows tuning between the native triangular lattice and a square lattice, while linearly polarized light enables dimensional reduction to a quasi-one-dimensional geometry. Without drive, these twisted TMDs simulate the single band Fermi-Hubbard model; we show that this approximation stil…
We present quantum control techniques to engineer flat bands of symmetry-protected Majorana edge modes in s-wave superconductors. Specifically, we show how periodic control may be employed for designing time-independent effective Hamiltonians, which support $Floquet$ $Majorana$ $flat$ $bands$, starting from equilibrium conditions that are either topologically trivial or only support individual Majorana pairs. In the first approach, a suitable modulation of the chemical potential simultaneously induces Majorana flat bands and dynamically $activates$ a pre-existing chiral symmetry which is respo…
Transport measurements were made on a system consisting of a zinc nanowire array sandwiched between two bulk superconducting electrodes (Sn or In). It was found that the superconductivity of Zn nanowires of 40 nm diameter is suppressed either completely or partially by the superconducting electrodes. When the electrodes are driven into their normal state by a magnetic field, the nanowires switch back to their superconducting state. This phenomenon is significantly weakened when one of the two superconducting electrodes is replaced by a normal metal. The phenomenon is not seen in wires with dia…
Magnons in antiferromagnetic insulators couple strongly to conduction electrons in adjacent metals. We show that this interfacial tie can lead to superconductivity in a tri-layer consisting of a metal sandwiched between two antiferromagnetic insulators. The critical temperature is closely related to the magnon gap, which can be in the THz range. We estimate the critical temperature in MnF$_2$-Au-MnF$_2$ to be on the order of 1 K. The Umklapp scattering at metal-antiferromagnet interfaces leads to a d-wave superconductive pairing, in contrast to the p-wave superconductivity mediated by magnons …
We propose a possible way to realize topological superconductivity with application of laser light to superconducting cuprate thin films. Applying Floquet theory to a model of $d$-wave superconductors with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, we derive an effective model and discuss its topological nature. Interplay of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and the laser light effect induces the synthetic magnetic fields, thus making the system gapped. Then the system acquires the topologically non-trivial nature which is characterized by Chern numbers. The effective magnetic fields do not create the vortices …
We theoretically investigate the Floquet generation of second-order topological superconducting (SOTSC) phase, hosting Majorana corner modes (MCMs), considering a quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) with proximity induced superconducting $s$-wave pairing in it. Our dynamical prescription consists of the periodic kick in time-reversal symmetry breaking in-plane magnetic field and four-fold rotational symmetry breaking mass term while these Floquet MCMs are preserved by anti-unitary particle-hole symmetry. The first driving protocol always leads to four zero energy MCMs (i.e. one Majorana per cor…
Despite intensive searches for topological superconductors, the realization of topological superconductivity remains under debate. Previous proposals for the topological $s$-wave, $p$-wave, and chiral $d$-wave superconductivity have both advantages and disadvantages. In this review, we discuss two-dimensional topological superconductivity based on the non-chiral $d$-wave superconductors. It is shown that the noncentrosymmetric $d$-wave superconductors become topological superconductors under an infinitesimal Zeeman field without fine-tuning of parameters. Floquet engineering for introducing th…
We theoretically investigate a practically realizable Floquet topological superconductor model, based on a one-dimensional Rashba nanowire and proximity induced $s$-wave superconductivity in the presence of a Zeeman field. The driven system hosts regular $0$- and anomalous $π$-Majorana end modes~(MEMs). By tuning the chemical potential and the frequency of the drive, we illustrate the generation of multiple MEMs in our theoretical set up. We utilize the chiral symmetry operator to topologically characterize these MEMs via a dynamical winding number constructed out of the periodized evolution o…
The past few years have witnessed increased attention to the quest for Majorana-like excitations in the condensed matter community. As a promising candidate in this race, the one-dimensional chiral Majorana edge mode (CMEM) in topological insulator-superconductor heterostructures has gathered renewed interests during recent months after an experimental breakthrough. In this paper, we study the quantum transport of topological insulator-superconductor hybrid devices subject to light-matter interaction or general time-periodic modulation. We report half-integer quantized conductance plateaus at …
We consider a Josephson bijunction consisting of a thin $SIS$ $π$-Josephson junction sandwiched between two-dimensional semiconducting layers with strong Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Each of these layers forms an $SNS$ junction due to proximity-induced superconductivity. The $SIS$ junction is assumed to be thin enough such that the two Rashba layers are tunnel-coupled. We show that, by tuning external gates, this system can be controllably brought into a time-reversal invariant topological superconducting phase with a Kramers pair of Majorana bound states being localized at the end of the no…
We show that a film of a semiconductor such as GaAs, in which s-wave superconductivity and a Zeeman splitting are induced by proximity effect, supports zero-energy Majorana fermion modes in the ordinary vortex excitations. The key to the topological order is the existence of spin-orbit coupling, coexisting with proximity-induced s-wave superconductivity. Since time reversal symmetry is explicitly broken, the edge of the film constitutes a chiral Majorana wire. The heterostructure we propose -- a semiconducting thin film sandwiched between an s-wave superconductor and a magnetic insulator -- is…
We propose a three-step periodic drive protocol to engineer two-dimensional~(2D) Floquet quadrupole superconductors and three-dimensional~(3D) Floquet octupole superconductors hosting zero-dimensional Majorana corner modes~(MCMs), based on unconventional $d$-wave superconductivity. Remarkably, the driven system conceives four phases with only $0$ MCMs, no MCMs, only anomalous $π$ MCMs, and both regular $0$ and anomalous $π$ MCMs. To circumvent the subtle issue of characterizing $0$ and $π$ MCMs separately, we employ the periodized evolution operator to architect the dynamical invariants, namel…
We introduce and solve a two-band model of spinless fermions with $p_x$-wave pairing on a square lattice. The model reduces to the well-known extended Harper-Hofstadter model with half-flux quanta per plaquette and weakly coupled Kitaev chains in two respective limits. We show that its phase diagram contains a topologically nontrivial weak pairing phase as well as a trivial strong pairing phase as the ratio of the pairing amplitude and hopping is tuned. Introducing periodic driving to the model, we observe a cascade of Floquet phases with well defined quasienergy gaps and featuring chiral Majo…
Motivated by the recent experimental realization of twisted trilayer graphene and the observed superconductivity that is associated with its flat bands at specific angles, we study trilayer graphene under the influence of different forms of light in the non-interacting limit. Specifically, we study four different types of stacking configurations with a single twisted layer. In all four cases, we study the impact of circularly polarized light and longitudinal light coming from a waveguide. We derive effective time-independent Floquet Hamiltonians and review light-induced changes to the band str…
The topological insulator is a fundamentally new phase of matter, with the striking property that the conduction of electrons occurs only on its surface, not within the bulk, and that conduction is topologically protected. Topological protection, the total lack of scattering of electron waves by disorder, is perhaps the most fascinating and technologically important aspect of this material: it provides robustness that is otherwise known only for superconductors. However, unlike superconductivity and the quantum Hall effect, which necessitate low temperatures or magnetic fields, the immunity to…
Being motivated by intriguing phenomena such as the breakdown of conventional bulk boundary correspondence and emergence of skin modes in the context of non-Hermitian (NH) topological insulators, we here propose a NH second-order topological superconductor (SOTSC) model that hosts Majorana zero modes (MZMs). Employing the non-Bloch form of NH Hamiltonian, we topologically characterize the above modes by biorthogonal nested polarization and resolve the apparent breakdown of the bulk boundary correspondence. Unlike the Hermitian SOTSC, we notice that the MZMs inhabit only one corner out of four …
We investigate the Josephson effect through a two-level quantum dot with an exchange coupling between two dot electrons. We compute the superconducting phase relationship and construct the phase diagram in the superconducting gap--exchange coupling plane in the regime of the singlet-triplet transition driven by the exchange coupling. In our study two configurations for the dot-lead coupling are considered: one where effectively only one channel couples to the dot, and the other where the two dot orbitals have opposite parities. Perturbative analysis in the weak-coupling limit reveals that the …

Topological insulators (TIs) have attracted immense interest because they host helical surface states. Protected by time-reversal symmetry, they are robust to non-magnetic disorder. When superconductivity is induced in these helical states, they are predicted to emulate p-wave pairing symmetry, with Majorana states bound to vortices. Majorana bound states possess non-Abelian exchange statistics which can be probed through interferometry. Here, we take a significant step towards Majorana interferometry by observing pronounced Fabry-Perot oscillations in a TI sandwiched between a superconducting…
Topological superconductors supporting Majorana Fermions with non-abelian statistics are presently a subject of intense theoretical and experimental effort. It has been proposed that the observation of a half-frequency or a fractional Josephson effect is a more reliable test for topological superconductivity than the search for end zero modes. Low-energy end modes can occur accidentally due to impurities. In fact, the fractional Josephson effect has been observed for the semiconductor nanowire system. Here we consider the ac Josephson effect in a conventional s-wave superconductor-normal metal…
We study the effects of dissipation and time-independent nonequilibrium drive on an open superconducting graphene. In particular, we investigate how dissipation and nonequilibrium effects modify the semi-metal-BCS quantum phase transition that occurs at half-filling in equilibrium graphene with attractive interactions. Our system consists of a graphene sheet sandwiched by two semi-infinite three-dimensional Fermi liquid reservoirs, which act both as a particle pump/sink and a source of decoherence. A steady-state charge current is established in the system by equilibrating the two reservoirs a…
We study quasiparticle states on a surface of a topological insulator (TI) with proximity-induced superconductivity under an external magnetic field. An applied magnetic field creates two Majorana bound states: a vortex Majorana state localized inside a vortex core and an exterior Majorana state localized along a circle centered at the vortex core. We calculate the spin-resolved local density of states (LDOS) and demonstrate that the shrinking of the radius of the exterior Majorana state, predicted in Ref. [R. S. Akzyanov et al., Phys. Rev. B 94, 125428 (2016)], under a strong magnetic field c…
