The viewing-angle enlargement of a holographic image is a crucial factor for realizing the holographic display. The numerical aperture (NA) of digital hologram other than a pixel specification has been known to determine the angular field extent of image. Here, we provide a valid foundation for the dependence of viewing angle on the hologram numerical aperture by investigating mathematically the internal structure of the sampled point spread function showing a self-similarity of its modulating curves and especially, analyzing this scheme on the basis of quantum mechanical framework. The enhanced-NA Fresnel hologram generates the multiple images with a high resolution, which can lead to the higher viewing angle represented as the NA of whole aperture of hologram. Optical experiment shows the consistent result with quantum mechanical description of viewing angle of holographic images. Finally, we discuss the method for enlarging viewing angle of holographic image without sacrificing image size by using this scheme.
We analyze the aliasing phenomenon for digital Fresnel hologram with an enhanced numerical aperture (NA). The enhanced-NA digital hologram acquired computationally or optically at a closer distance from the object has an aliased fringe generated by undersampling process of the Fresnel prefactor. The point spread function known as Fresnel factor reveals a self-similar envelope when being sampled, which becomes a crucial mechanism in making this type of aliasing fringe of hologram. We describe that as the enhanced-NA hologram involves already the complementary aliased fringe that might come up i…

Fresnel incoherent correlation holography (FINCH) is a self-interference based super-resolution three-dimensional imaging technique. FINCH in inline configuration requires an active phase modulator and at least three camera shots to reconstruct objects without the twin image and bias terms. In this study, FINCH is realized using a randomly multiplexed bifocal binary Fresnel zone lenses fabricated using electron beam lithography. A modified hologram reconstruction mechanism is presented which introduces the single shot capability in FINCH. A point spread hologram library was recorded using a po…
An experimental method for suppression of DC term in the reconstructed images from Fresnel digital holograms is presented. In this method, two holograms for the same object are captured sequentially and subtracted. Since these two holograms are captured at different moments, they are slightly different from each other for fluctuations of noises. The DC term is suppressed in the image reconstructed from the subtraction hologram, while the two virtual and real images are successfully reconstructed. This method can be potentially used for the improvement of image quality reconstructed from Fresne…
We investigate the angular field of view (AFOV) of a holographic image reconstructed from the digital Fresnel hologram in holographic display. The theoretical analysis reveals that the AFOV of a holographic image is fundamentally determined by the hologram numerical aperture (HNA) other than a diffraction angle of pixel pitch of a pixelated modulator. This property is proved for various types of the digital holograms by using a numerical simulation and optical experiments. The high-HNA hologram reconstructs the image with a high viewing-angle, although the image contraction is inevitable due t…
The enhanced-NA Fresnel hologram reconstructs a holographic image at a viewing angle larger than the diffraction angle of a hologram pixel. The image space is limited by the bandwidth of a digital hologram. In this study, we investigate the property of image formation in the extended image space beyond a diffraction zone. A numerical simulation using the phase Fresnel hologram is carried out to observe an extension of image space and the effect of this on the changes in the angular field of view. The phase Fresnel hologram, synthesized by restricting the angular view range to a diffraction ang…
We propose that viewing angle expansion of the holographic image can be realized by using high-order diffraction beams caused by the pixel structure sampling the hologram data. The diffractive beam propagating to new optical axis direction plays a role in a modulated carrier similar to a carrier signal of the off-axis holography, which makes new viewing zone of the reconstruction image. The reconstructed image in the Fresnel hologram is deformed along new viewing direction, whereas the Fourier hologram enables to retrieve three-dimensional image with other perspective. High resolution hologram…
We demonstrate swept-source optical coherence tomography in real-time by high throughput digital Fresnel hologram rendering from optically-acquired interferograms with a high-speed camera. The interferogram stream is spatially rescaled with respect to wavelength to compensate for field-of-view dilation inherent to discrete Fresnel transformation. Holograms are calculated from an input stream of 16-bit, 1024-by-1024-pixel interferograms recorded at up to 512 frames per second with a digital camera. All calculations are performed by a NVIDIA TITAN Xp graphics card on single-precision floating-po…
The images of the silicon test object has been carried out. An image for in-line hard X-ray hologram is presented. The transmission of a hologram image for hard X-ray radiation using Fresnel phase zone plate has been investigated.
Holographic rendering of off-axis intensity digital holograms is discussed. A review of some of the main numerical processing methods, based either on the Fourier transform interpretation of the propagation integral or on its linear system counterpart, is reported. Less common methods such as adjustable magnification reconstruction schemes and Fresnelet decomposition are presented and applied to the digital treatment of off-axis holograms. The influence of experimental parameters on the classical hologram reconstruction methods is assessed, offering guidelines for optimal image rendering regar…
We report on phase-shifted holographic interferogram demodulation by singular value decomposition. Numerical processing of optically-acquired interferograms over several modulation periods was performed in two steps : 1- rendering of off-axis complex-valued holograms by Fresnel transformation of the interferograms; 2- eigenvalue spectrum assessment of the lag-covariance matrix of hologram pixels. Experimental results in low-light recording conditions were compared with demodulation by Fourier analysis, in the presence of random phase drifts.
Holographic Predictive Search (HPS) is a novel approach to search-based hologram generation that uses a mathematical understanding of the optical transforms to make informed optimisation decisions. Existing search techniques such as Direct Search (DS) and Simulated Annealing (SA) rely on trialling modifications to a test hologram and observing the results. A formula is used to decide whether the change should be accepted. HPS operates presciently, using knowledge of the underlying mathematical relationship to make exact changes to the test hologram that guarantee the 'best' outcome for that ch…
We demonstrate the feasibility of high-quality digital holography of the human retina in real-time with a fast camera and commodity computer hardware. High throughput rendering of digital Fresnel holograms from optically-acquired inline interferograms is performed in conjunction with temporal demodulation by projection of hologram sequences onto a data-derived basis in order to discriminate local narrowband coherent detection contrasts, mostly due to blood flow and optical absorption, from spurious interferometric contributions. Digital holograms are calculated from a sustained input stream of…
We propose a real-time digital holographic microscopy, that enables simultaneous multiple reconstructed images with arbitrary resolution, depth and positions, using Shifted-Fresnel diffraction instead of Fresnel diffraction. In this system, we used four graphics processing units (GPU) for multiple reconstructions in real-time. We show the demonstration of four reconstruction images from a hologram with arbitrary depths, positions, and resolutions.
We demonstrate a gigapixel inline digital holographic microscopy using a consumer scanner. The consumer scanner can maximally scan an A4 size image (297mm x 210mm) with 4800 dpi (= 5.29 um), theoretically achieving a resolution of 56,144 x 39,698 = 2.22 gigapixels. The system using a consumer scanner has a simple structure, compared with synthetic aperture digital holography using a camera mounted on a two-dimensional moving stage. In this demonstration, we captured an inline hologram with 23,602 x 18,023 pixels (= 0.43 gigapixels). In addition, to accelerate the reconstruction time of the gig…
Digital holographic microscopy based on Gabor in-line holography is a well-known method to reconstruct both the amplitude and phase of small objects. To reconstruct the image of an object from its hologram, obtained under illumination by monochromatic scalar waves, numerical calculations of Fresnel integrals are required. To improve spatial resolution in the resulting reconstruction, we re-sample the holographic data before application of the reconstruction algorithm. This procedure amounts to inverting an interpolated Fresnel diffraction image to recover the object. The advantage of this meth…
A metasurface hologram combines fine spatial resolution and large viewing angles with a planar form factor and compact size. However, it suffers coherent artifacts originating from electromagnetic cross-talk between closely packed meta-atoms and fabrication defects of nanoscale features. Here, we introduce an efficient method to remove all artifacts by fine-tuning the spatial coherence of illumination. Our method is implemented with a degenerate cavity laser, which allows precise, continuous tuning of spatial coherence over a wide range with little variation in emission spectrum and total powe…
The Maxwellian display presents always-focused images to the viewer, alleviating the vergence-accommodation conflict (VAC) in near-eye displays (NEDs). However, the limited eyebox of the typical Maxwellian display prevents it from wider applications. We propose a holographic Maxwellian near-eye display with adjustable and continuous eye-box replication. Holographic display provides a way to match the human pupil size with the interval of the replicated eyeboxes, making it possible to eliminate or alleviate double image or blind area problem, which exists long in eyebox expansion for Maxwellian…
