We propose to apply a 2D CNN architecture to 3D MRI image Alzheimer's disease classification. Training a 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) is time-consuming and computationally expensive. We make use of approximate rank pooling to transform the 3D MRI image volume into a 2D image to use as input to a 2D CNN. We show our proposed CNN model achieves $9.5\%$ better Alzheimer's disease classification accuracy than the baseline 3D models. We also show that our method allows for efficient training, requiring only 20% of the training time compared to 3D CNN models. Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative brain disease. Being the primary cause of Dementia in adults and progressively destroys brain memory. Though Alzheimer's disease does not have a cure currently, diagnosing it at an earlier stage will help reduce the severity of the disease. Thus, early diagnosis of Alzheimer's could help to reduce or stop the disease from progressing. In this paper, we proposed a deep convolutional neural network-based model for learning model using to determine the stage of Dementia in adults based on the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images to detect the early onset o…

Alzheimer's disease is a neurogenerative disease that alters memories, cognitive functions leading to death. Early diagnosis of the disease, by detection of the preliminary stage, called Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), remains a challenging issue. In this respect, we introduce, in this paper, a powerful classification architecture that implements the pre-trained network AlexNet to automatically extract the most prominent features from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images in order to detect the Alzheimer's disease at the MCI stage. The proposed method is evaluated using a big database from …

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive brain disorder that causes memory and functional impairments. The advances in machine learning and publicly available medical datasets initiated multiple studies in AD diagnosis. In this work, we utilize a multi-modal deep learning approach in classifying normal cognition, mild cognitive impairment and AD classes on the basis of structural MRI and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scans from the OASIS-3 dataset. In addition to a conventional multi-modal network, we also present an input agnostic architecture that allows diagnosis with either sMRI or DTI s…
Recent studies suggest that combined analysis of Magnetic resonance imaging~(MRI) that measures brain atrophy and positron emission tomography~(PET) that quantifies hypo-metabolism provides improved accuracy in diagnosing Alzheimer's disease. However, such techniques are limited by the availability of corresponding scans of each modality. Current work focuses on a cross-modal approach to estimate FDG-PET scans for the given MR scans using a 3D U-Net architecture. The use of the complete MR image instead of a local patch based approach helps in capturing non-local and non-linear correlations be…

In recent years, many papers have reported state-of-the-art performance on Alzheimer's Disease classification with MRI scans from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) dataset using convolutional neural networks. However, we discover that when we split that data into training and testing sets at the subject level, we are not able to obtain similar performance, bringing the validity of many of the previous studies into question. Furthermore, we point out that previous works use different subsets of the ADNI data, making comparison across similar works tricky. In this study, we …

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that is one of the significant causes of death in the elderly population. Many deep learning techniques have been proposed to diagnose AD using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans. Predicting AD using 2D slices extracted from 3D MRI scans is challenging as the inter-slice information gets lost. To this end, we propose a novel and lightweight framework termed 'Biceph-Net' for AD diagnosis using 2D MRI scans that model both the intra-slice and inter-slice information. Biceph-Net has been experimentally shown to perform similar to other S…

Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is essential in preventing the disease's progression. Therefore, detecting AD from neuroimaging data such as structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) has been a topic of intense investigation in recent years. Deep learning has gained considerable attention in Alzheimer's detection. However, training a convolutional neural network from scratch is challenging since it demands more computational time and a significant amount of annotated data. By transferring knowledge learned from other image recognition tasks to medical image classification, trans…

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by alterations of the brain's structural and functional connectivity during its progressive degenerative processes. Existing auxiliary diagnostic methods have accomplished the classification task, but few of them can accurately evaluate the changing characteristics of brain connectivity. In this work, a prior guided adversarial representation learning and hypergraph perceptual network (PGARL-HPN) is proposed to predict abnormal brain connections using triple-modality medical images. Concretely, a prior distribution from the anatomical knowledge is estimated…

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) conversion prediction, i.e., identifying MCI patients of high risks converting to Alzheimer's disease (AD), is essential for preventing or slowing the progression of AD. Although previous studies have shown that the fusion of multi-modal data can effectively improve the prediction accuracy, their applications are largely restricted by the limited availability or high cost of multi-modal data. Building an effective prediction model using only magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remains a challenging research topic. In this work, we propose a multi-modal multi-instan…

There is a need for automatic diagnosis of certain diseases from medical images that could help medical practitioners for further assessment towards treating the illness. Alzheimers disease is a good example of a disease that is often misdiagnosed. Alzheimers disease (Hear after referred to as AD), is caused by atrophy of certain brain regions and by brain cell death and is the leading cause of dementia and memory loss [1]. MRI scans reveal this information but atrophied regions are different for different individuals which makes the diagnosis a bit more trickier and often gets misdiagnosed [1…

Multi-modal biological, imaging, and neuropsychological markers have demonstrated promising performance for distinguishing Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients from cognitively normal elders. However, it remains difficult to early predict when and which mild cognitive impairment (MCI) individuals will convert to AD dementia. Informed by pattern classification studies which have demonstrated that pattern classifiers built on longitudinal data could achieve better classification performance than those built on cross-sectional data, we develop a deep learning model based on recurrent neural networks…
Increasing effort in brain image analysis has been dedicated to early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) based on neuroimaging data. Most existing studies have been focusing on binary classification problems, e.g., distinguishing AD patients from normal control (NC) elderly or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) individuals from NC elderly. However, identifying individuals with AD and MCI, especially MCI individuals who will convert to AD (progressive MCI, pMCI), in a single setting, is needed to achieve the goal of early diagnosis of AD. In this paper, we propose a deep ordinal ranking model f…
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most common public health issues the world is facing today. This disease has a high prevalence primarily in the elderly accompanying memory loss and cognitive decline. AD detection is a challenging task which many authors have developed numerous computerized automatic diagnosis systems utilizing neuroimaging and other clinical data. MRI scans provide high-intensity visible features, making these scans the most widely used brain imaging technique. In recent years deep learning has achieved leading success in medical image analysis. But a relatively little …
Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are becoming prominent models for semi-automated diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) using brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Although being highly accurate, deep CNN models lack transparency and interpretability, precluding adequate clinical reasoning and not complying with most current regulatory demands. One popular choice for explaining deep image models is occluding regions of the image to isolate their influence on the prediction. However, existing methods for occluding patches of brain scans generate images outside the distribution to whi…
