Dynamical instability is an inherent feature of bosonic systems described by the Bogoliubov de Geenes (BdG) Hamiltonian. Since it causes the BdG system to collapse, it is generally thought that it should be avoided. Recently, there has been much effort to harness this instability for the benefit of creating a topological amplifier with stable bulk bands but unstable edge modes which can be populated at an exponentially fast rate. We present a theorem for determining the stability of states with energies sufficiently away from zero, in terms of an unconventional commutator between the number conserving part and number nonconserving part of the BdG Hamiltonian. We apply the theorem to a generalization of a model from Galilo et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett, 115, 245302(2015)] for creating a topological amplifier in an interacting spin-1 atom system in a honeycomb lattice through a quench process. We use this model to illustrate how the vanishing of the unconventional commutator selects the symmetries for a system so that its bulk states are stable against (weak) pairing interactions. We find that as long as time reversal symmetry is preserved, our system can act like a topological amplifier, even in the presence of an onsite staggered potential which breaks the inversion symmetry.
We provide a general methodology to directly determine the validity of the meanfield Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. In particular we apply this methodology to the case of two component interacting ultracold Fermi gases. As an example, we consider the case of population imbalance, between the two components, in the strongly attractive interacting regime, where meanfield results predict Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states. For these states we find at finite temperatures that the assumptions used to derive the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation are invalid.
The Bernard-LeClair (BL) symmetry classes generalize the ten-fold way classes in the absence of Hermiticity. Within the BL scheme, time-reversal and particle-hole come in two flavors, and "pseudo-Hermiticity" generalizes Hermiticity. We propose that these symmetries are relevant for the topological classification of non-Hermitian single-particle Hamiltonians and Hermitian bosonic Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) models. We show that the spectrum of any Hermitian bosonic BdG Hamiltonian is found by solving for the eigenvalues of a non-Hermitian matrix which belongs to one of the BL classes. We theref…
We present a finite element toolbox for the computation of Bogoliubov-de Gennes modes used to assess the linear stability of stationary solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. Applications concern one (single GP equation) or two-component (a system of coupled GP equations) Bose-Einstein condensates in one, two and three dimensions of space. An implementation using the free software FreeFem++ is distributed with this paper. For the computation of the GP stationary (complex or real) solutions we use a Newton algorithm coupled with a continuation method exploring the parameter space (the…
We study the time-dependent Bogoliubov--de-Gennes equations for generic translation-invariant fermionic many-body systems. For initial states that are close to thermal equilibrium states at temperatures near the critical temperature, we show that the magnitude of the order parameter stays approximately constant in time and, in particular, does not follow a time-dependent Ginzburg--Landau equation, which is often employed as a phenomenological description and predicts a decay of the order parameter in time. The full non-linear structure of the equations is necessary to understand this behavior.
The energy spectrum of bosonic excitations from a condensate is given by the spectrum of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian constructed from a bosonic Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian in general even though the system is essentially Hermitian. In other words, two types of non-Hermiticity can coexist: one from the bosonic BdG nature and the other from the open quantum nature. In this paper, we propose boundary-dependent dynamical instability. We first define the bosonic dissipative BdG Hamiltonian in terms of Green's function in Nambu space and discuss the correct particle-hole symmetry of the c…
We exhaust all exact self-consistent solutions of complex-valued fermionic condensates in the 1+1 dimensional Bogoliubov-de Gennes and chiral Gross-Neveu systems under uniform boundary conditions. We obtain $n$ complex (twisted) kinks, or grey solitons, with $2n$ parameters corresponding to their positions and phase shifts. Each soliton can be placed at an arbitrary position while the self-consistency requires its phase shift to be quantized by $π/N$ for $N$ flavors.
In this paper we report on the results of a numerical study of the nonlinear time-dependent Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer (BCS) equations, often also denoted as Bogoliubov--de--Gennes (BdG) equations, for a one-dimensional system of fermions with contact interaction. We show that, even above the critical temperature, the full equations and their linear approximation give rise to completely different evolutions. In contrast to its linearization, the full nonlinear equation does not show any diffusive behavior in the order parameter. This means that the order parameter does not follow a Ginzburg--…
We derive a nonlinear differential equation for the gap parameter of a superfluid Fermi system by performing a suitable coarse graining of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations throughout the BCS-BEC crossover, with the aim of replacing the time-consuming solution of the original BdG equations by the simpler solution of this novel equation. We perform a favorable numerical test on the validity of this new equation over most of the temperature-coupling phase diagram, by an explicit comparison with the full solution of the original BdG equations for an isolated vortex. We also show that the n…
It is quite common that several different phases exist simultaneously in a system of trapped quantum gases of ultra-cold atoms. One such example is the strongly-interacting Fermi gas with two imbalanced spin species, which has received a great amount of attention due to the possible presence of exotic superfluid phases. By employing novel numerical techniques and algorithms, we self-consistently solve the Bogoliubov de-Gennes equations, which describe Fermi superfluids in the mean-field framework. From this study, we investigate the novel phases of spin-imbalanced Fermi gases and examine the v…
We present an inhomogeneous theory for the low-temperature properties of a resonantly interacting Fermi mixture in a trap that goes beyond the local-density approximation. We compare the Bogoliubov-de Gennes and a Landau-Ginzburg approach and conclude that the latter is more appropriate when dealing with a first-order phase transition. Our approach incorporates the state-of-the-art knowledge on the homogeneous mixture with a population imbalance exactly and gives good agreement with the experimental density profiles of Shin {\it et al}. [Nature {\bf 451}, 689 (2008)]. We calculate the universa…
We consider a Bogolibov-de Geenes (BdG) Hamiltonian, which is a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with pseudo-Hermiticity, for a system of (pseudo) spin-$1/2$ bosons in a honeycomb lattice under the condition that the population difference between the two spin components, i.e., magnetization, is a constant. Such a system is capable of acting as a topological amplifier, under time-reversal symmetry, with stable bulk bands but unstable edge modes which can be populated at an exponentially fast rate. We quantitatively study the topological properties of this model within the framework of the 38-fold way …
Gray solitons are a one-parameter family of solutions to the one-dimensional non-linear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with positive cubic nonlinearity, as found in repulsively interacting dilute Bose-Einstein condensates or electromagnetic waves in the visible spectrum in waveguides described by Gross-Pitaevskii mean field theory. In two dimensions these solutions to the NLSE appear as a line or plane of depressed condensate density or light intensity, but numerical solutions show that this line is dynamically unstable to `snaking': the initially straight line of density or intensity minimum und…
We investigate the evolution of the Josephson and related effects throughout the BCS-BEC crossover, by performing a systematic numerical solution of the (time-independent) Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations at zero temperature in a fully self-consistent fashion. The numerical strategies and algorithms we have adopted are described in detail, with the aim of easing further independent studies. Several results are obtained by the present calculation. The profiles of the magnitude and phase of the gap parameter across the Josephson barrier are determined under a variety of conditions. We find that th…
We investigate the role of squeezing interaction in inducing topological Bogoliubov excitations of a bosonic system. We introduce a squeezing transformation which is capable of reducing the corresponding Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian to an effective non-interacting one with the spectra and topology unchanged. In the weak interaction limit, we apply the perturbation theory to investigate the squeezing-induced topological gap opening on bosonic Bogoliubov excitations and find that the squeezing interaction plays an equivalent role as a spin-orbit or Zeeman-like coupling in the effective Hamil…
We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate of bosons with repulsion, described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and restricted by an impenetrable "hard wall" (either rigid or flexible) which is intended to suppress the "snake instability" inherent for dark solitons. We solve analytically the Bogoliubov - de Gennes equations to find the spectra of gapless Bogoliubov excitations localized near the "domain wall" and therefore split from the bulk excitation spectrum of the Bose-Einstein condensate. The "domain wall" may model either the surface of liquid helium or of a strongly trapped Bose-Einstein c…
The dynamical instability of weakly interacting two-component Bose--Einstein condensates with coaxial quantized vortices is analytically investigated in a two-dimensional isotopic harmonic potential. We examine whether complex eigenvalues appear on the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation, implying dynamical instability. Rather than solving the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation numerically, we rely on a perturbative expansion with respect to the coupling constant which enables a simple, analytic approach. For each pair of winding numbers and for each magnetic quantum number, the ranges of inter-compone…
We solve the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations for an inhomogeneous condensate in the vicinity of a linear turning point. A stable integration scheme is developed using a transformation into an adiabatic basis. We identify boundary modes trapped in a potential whose shape is similar to a Hartree-Fock mean-field treatment. These modes are non-resonantly excited when bulk modes reflect at the turning point and contribute significantly to the spectrum of local density fluctuations.
We predict a universal mid-gap bound state in topological superfluids, induced by either non-magnetic or magnetic impurities in the strong scattering limit. This universal state is similar to the lowest-energy Caroli-de Gennes-Martricon bound state in a vortex core, but is bound to localized impurities. We argue that the observation of such a universal bound state can be a clear signature for identifying topological superfluids. We theoretically examine our argument for a spin-orbit coupled ultracold atomic Fermi gas trapped in a two-dimensional harmonic potential, by performing extensive self…
We use the time-dependent Bogoliubov de Gennes equations to study dark solitons in three-dimensional spin-imbalanced superfluid Fermi gases. We explore how the shape and dynamics of dark solitons are altered by the presence of excess unpaired spins which fill their low-density core. The unpaired particles broaden the solitons and suppress the transverse snake instability. We discuss ways of observing these phenomena in cold atom experiments.
We use microscopic Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism to explore the ground-state phase diagram of the single-band attractive Hofstadter-Hubbard model on a square lattice. We show that the interplay between the Hofstadter butterfly and superfluidity breaks spatial symmetry, and gives rise to stripe-ordered superfluid and supersolid phases in large parameter spaces. We also discuss the effects of a trapping potential and comment on the viability of observing stripe-ordered phases with cold Fermi gases.
