We review the theoretical and experimental progress in the Glauber model of multiple nucleon and/or parton scatterings, after the last 10--15 years of operation with proton and nuclear beams at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and with various light and heavy colliding ions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The main developments and the state-of-the-art of the field are summarized. These encompass measurements of the inclusive inelastic proton and nuclear cross sections, advances in the description of the proton and nuclear density profiles and their fluctuations, inclusion of subnucleonic degrees of freedom, experimental procedures and issues related to the determination of the collision centrality, validation of the binary scaling prescription for hard scattering cross sections, and constraints on transport properties of quark-gluon matter from varying initial-state conditions in relativistic hydrodynamics calculations. These advances confirm the validity and usefulness of the Glauber formalism for quantitative studies of QCD matter produced in high-energy collisions of systems, from protons to uranium nuclei, of vastly different size.
We present the results of an improved Monte Carlo Glauber (MCG) model of relevance for collisions involving nuclei at center-of-mass energies of BNL RHIC ($\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=0.2$ TeV), CERN LHC ($\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$-$8.8$ TeV), and proposed future hadron colliders ($\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}\approx 10$-$63$ TeV). The inelastic pp cross sections as a function of $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ are obtained from a precise data-driven parametrization that exploits the many available measurements at LHC collision energies. We describe the nuclear transverse profile with two separated 2-parameter Fermi distributio…
We use an event-by-event hydrodynamical description of the heavy-ion collision process with Glauber initial conditions to calculate the thermal emission of photons. The photon rates in the hadronic phase follow from a spectral function approach and a density expansion, while in the partonic phase they follow from the AMY perturbative rates. The calculated photon elliptic flows are lower than those reported recently by both the ALICE and PHENIX collaborations.
Using the newest data for pp scattering at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) combined with the Glauber model, we make hydrodynamic predictions for the soft hadronic observables planned to be measured in the forthcoming Pb+Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV.
Gribov approach to high-energy interactions of hadrons and nuclei is reviewed and applied to calculation of particle production in heavy-ions collisions. It is pointed out that the AGK (Abramovsky, Gribov, Kancheli) cutting rules is a powerful tool to investigate particle spectra in these processes. It leads, in the Glauber approximation, to a simple formula for the density of hadrons produced in the central rapidity region in nucleus-nucleus interactions. An estimate of this density for RHIC and LHC is presented and compared with results of Monte-Carlo calculations. It is shown that the Glaub…
Following the Boz$\dot{\textrm{e}}$k-Wyskiel parametrization tilted initial condition, an alternative way to construct a longitudinal tilted fireball based on the Glauber collision geometry is presented. This longitudinal tilted initial condition combined with the Ideal-CLVisc (3 + 1)D hydrodynamic model, a nonvanishing directed flow coefficient $v_{1}$ in a wide rapidity range is observed. After comparing the model's results with experimentally observed data of directed flow coefficient $v_{1}(η)$ from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV Cu + Cu, Au + Au collisions at RHIC energy to $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2…
We use perfect-fluid hydrodynamical model to predict the elliptic flow coefficients in Pb + Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The initial state for the hydrodynamical calculation for central $A + A$ collisions is obtained from the perturbative QCD + saturation (EKRT) model. The centrality dependence of the initial state is modeled by the optical Glauber model. We show that the baseline results obtained from the framework are in good agreement with the data from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), and show predictions for the $p_T$ spectra and elliptic flow of pions in P…
An important part of the physics program at the future electron-ion collider is to understand the nature of hadronization and the transport of energy and matter in large nuclei. Open heavy flavor production in deep inelastic scattering provides a new tool to address these critical questions. We present the first calculation of D-mesons and B-meson cross sections in electron-nucleus collisions at the EIC by including both next-to-leading order QCD corrections and cold nuclear matter effects. Our formalism employs generalized DGLAP evolution to include the contribution of in-medium parton shower…
This is a writeup of a plenary talk given at the conference {\it HCP 2012} held November 2012 in Kyoto, Japan. This writeup reviews recent theoretical developments in the following areas of top quark physics at hadron colliders: (a) the forward-backward asymmetry anomaly at the Tevatron, (b) precision top mass determination, (c) state of the art NLO calculations and (d) progress in NNLO calculations.
I review the studies, which were reported after the last Linear Collider Workshop, on top quark physics and QCD physics at a future e+e- linear collider.
In this paper we investigate the role of the high density effects in the heavy quark production cross section in $pA$ processes at RHIC and LHC. We use, as initial condition, a gluon distribution consistent with fixed target nuclear data and the Glauber-Mueller approach to describe the high density effects. We show that this process can be used as a probe of the presence of the high density effects. Moreover, we include these effects in the calculation of the heavy quark production in $AA$ collisions, verifying that they cannot be disregarded both in the estimates of quarkonium suppression and…
In this paper I review the calculations (and partially simulations and theoretical studies) that have been made and published during the last two to three years focusing on the electroweak symmetry breaking sector and the Higgs boson(s) within the Standard Model and models beyond the Standard Model (BSM) at or relevant for either the International Linear Collider (ILC) or the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC), commonly abbreviated as Linear Collider (LC).
We present and discuss the theory and phenomenology of the leading twist theory of nuclear shadowing which is based on the combination of the generalization of the Gribov-Glauber theory, QCD factorization theorems, and the HERA QCD analysis of diffraction in lepton-proton deep inelastic scattering (DIS). We apply this technique for the analysis of a wide range of hard processes with nuclei---inclusive DIS on deuterons, medium-range and heavy nuclei, coherent and incoherent diffractive DIS with nuclei, and hard diffraction in proton-nucleus scattering---and make predictions for the effect of nu…
Since their discovery, fluctuations in the initial state of heavy-ion collisions have been understood as originating mostly from the random positions of nucleons within the colliding nuclei. We consider an alternative approach where all the focus is on fluctuations generated by QCD interactions, that we evaluate at leading logarithmic accuracy in the color glass condensate effective theory. We validate our approach using BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data on anisotropic flow. In particular, we show that, compared to standard Glauber-inspired ca…
We review recently derived NNLO QCD results for top-pair production at hadron colliders. We compare the size of the NNLO corrections in $q\bar q\to t\bar t+X$ with the LO and NLO ones, and address the question of convergence of perturbative series. We compare the NLO and NNLO K-factors for the Tevatron.
The production of a Higgs boson in association with a pair of top-antitop or bottom-antibottom quarks plays a very important role at both the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider. The theoretical prediction of the corresponding cross sections has been improved by including the complete next-to-leading order QCD corrections. After a brief introduction, we review the results obtained for both the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider.
Using the Gribov-Glauber model for photon-nucleus scattering and a generalization of the vector meson dominance model for the hadronic structure of the photon, we make predictions for the cross section of incoherent $ρ$ photoproduction in Pb-Pb ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) in the Large Hadron Collider kinematics. We find that the effect of the inelastic nuclear shadowing is significant and leads to an additional 25% suppression of the incoherent cross section. Comparing our predictions to those of the STARlight Monte Carlo framework, we observe very significant differences.
The test of the Standard Model and search for New Physics signal are main aim of LHC experiment. With the increasing of the measurement accuracy at the LHC, it is a major task in future to exceed the current accuracy of the theoretical predictions for important processes, in particular ones involving Higgs boson and top quark. In this review we briefly summarize some recent theoretical progress in Higgs boson and top quark physics, especially the fixed-order and resummation predictions in QCD at both the Tevatron and the LHC.
We review some recent developments in Higgs physics at a $γγ$ collider. We begin with single Higgs boson production in $γγ$ collisions proceeding via the hadronic content of the photon. For SM Higgs masses of current theoretical interest, the resolved photon contributions are non-negligible in precision cross section measurements. We found that production of the heavier Higgs bosons, $H^0$ and $A^0$, of the MSSM can probe regions of the SUSY parameter space that will complement other measurements. We showed that associated $t H^\pm$ production in $γγ$ collisions can be used to make an accurate…
This short summary reviews the recent progress in the computation of higher-order corrections to W+b W-antib production. In addition, new phenomenological studies reveal potential problems that may affect precision measurements at the LHC.
This contribution presents the latest predictions for several QCD processes at low-x in the color dipole picture which are of interest for current hadron-hadron and future electron-hadron colliders. The predictions are derived using the solution to the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation for proton and nuclear targets. Two different approaches to the nuclear case are studied: a solution obtained using a newly proposed type of initial condition which represents the initial state of a given nucleus and the solutions based on an initial condition representing a proton coupled to a Glauber-Gribov prescrip…
The cross sections for a variety of channels of proton-nucleus interaction associated with large gaps in rapidity are calculated within the Glauber-Gribov theory. We found inelastic shadowing corrections to be dramatically enhanced for such events. We employ the light-cone dipole formalism which allows to calculate the inelastic corrections to all orders of the multiple interaction. Although Gribov corrections are known to make nuclear matter more transparent, we demonstrate that in some instances they lead to an opaqueness. Numerical calculations are performed for the energies of the HERA-B e…
In this talk, we describe the recent progress on the inclusion of mixed QCD-QED corrections for collider observables. In particular, we developed a formalism to extend $q_T$-resummation to deal with simultaneous emission of gluons and photons. We applied it to $Z$ production at colliders, and briefly discuss extensions to more complicated final states.
Hydrodynamics merged with single-freeze-out statistical hadronization is used to describe the midrapidity hadron production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the highest RHIC energies and to make predictions for the LHC. Thermodynamic properties of the quark-gluon plasma are taken from lattice simulations, at low temperatures the hadron-gas equation of state is used, while in the cross-over region an interpolation between the two equations of state is constructed. The initial condition for hydrodynamics is obtained from a Glauber profile for the entropy, with the initial central temperat…
We study the influence of unitarity corrections on the Drell-Yan transverse momentum distribution within the color dipole approach. These unitarity corrections are implemented through the multiple scattering Glauber-Mueller approach, which is contrasted with a phenomenological saturation model. The process is analyzed for the center of mass energies of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC, $\sqrt{s}=500$ GeV) and of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC, $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV). In addition, the results are extrapolated down to current energies of proton-proton collisions, where non-asymptotic correc…
In this article, we briefly review the recent progress related to extracting the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) specific shear viscosity from the flow data measured at Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
The astounding Physics results obtained with high-energy colliders in the last two decades owe much to an impressive progress in the understanding of the dynamics of strong interactions. I give here a personal overview of how the advance in QCD triggered by the Physics of hadronic final states at LEP has been exploited for New Physics searches at the LHC. Conversely, the need for precision calculations for LHC experiments has stimulated a huge progress in the understanding of the all-order structure of gauge theories. These results raise high expectations on the status of QCD at the start of a…

I review progress on investigations concerning top quark physics and QCD at a future linear e+e- collider that has been achieved since the presentation of the TESLA technical design report in spring 2001. I concentrate on studies that have been presented during the workshop series of the Extended Joint ECFA/DESY Study on Physics and Detectors for a Linear Electron-Positron Collider.
Recent progress in the perturbative analysis of hadronic jets, especially in the context of hadron colliders, is discussed. The characteristic feature of this work is the emergence of a level of precision in the study of the strong interactions far beyond that previously possible. Inclusive cross sections for high energy jets at the Tevatron are now perturbatively calculable with a reliability on the order of 10%. At present this theoretical precision is comparable to the quoted experimental errors. Progress has also been made towards understanding both the internal structure of jets and the i…
We review the recent theoretical progress in single-top physics at hadron colliders. Apart from single-top production within the Standard Model we treat certain aspects of single-top production in beyond Standard Model scenarios.
We present an overview of the present status and prospects for progress in electroweak measurements at future collider experiments leading to precision tests of the Standard Model of Electroweak Interactions. Special attention is paid to the measurement of the W mass, the effective weak mixing angle, and the determination of the top quark mass. Their constraints on the Higgs boson mass are discussed.
The hydrokinetic approach, that incorporates hydrodynamic expansion of the systems formed in A+A collisions and their dynamical decoupling, is applied to restore the initial conditions and space-time picture of the matter evolution in central Au+Au collisions at the top RHIC energy. The analysis is based on the detailed reproduction of the pion and kaon momentum spectra and femtoscopic data in whole interval of the transverse momenta studied by both STAR and PHENIX collaborations. The fitting procedure utilizes the two parameters: the maximal energy density at supposed thermalization time 1 fm…
An overview is given of recent progress on a variety of fronts in the global QCD analysis of the parton structure of the nucleon and its implication for collider phenomenology, carried out by various subgroups of the CTEQ collaboration.
I review recent theoretical progress on the description of heavy quark, jet and gauge boson production at colliders within perturbative QCD. Particular emphasis is put on the improved understanding of fragmentation phenomena, resummation of large logarithmic corrections and on precision calculations beyond the next-to-leading order.

We review the current state of the art in the determination of the parton substructure of the nucleon, as expressed in terms of parton distribution functions (PDFs), and probed in high-energy lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron collisions, and we assess their implications for current precision collider phenomenology, in particular at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We review the theoretical foundations of PDF determination: the way cross sections are expressed in terms of PDFs using perturbative QCD factorization and evolution, the methodology used to extract PDFs from experimental data, and the …
Recent progress in calculating O(alpha) electroweak corrections to W+W- pair production in photon-photon collisions is reviewed. The potential of the Photon Linear Collider to study anomalous W couplings is discussed.
We present a simple way to construct 3D initial conditions for relativistic heavy-ion collisions based on the Glauber collision geometry. Local energy and momentum conservation conditions are imposed to set non-trivial constraints on our parameterizations of longitudinal profiles for the system's initial energy density and flow velocity. After calibrating parameters with charged hadron rapidity distributions in central Au+Au collisions, we test model predictions for particle rapidity distributions in d+Au and peripheral Au+Au collisions in the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at Relativistic Hea…
Using a viscosity-based survival scale for geometrical perturbations formed in the early stages of relativistic heavy-ion collisions, we model the radial flow velocity during freeze-out. Subsequently, we employ the Cooper-Frye freeze-out prescription, with first-order viscous corrections to the distribution function, to obtain the transverse momentum distribution of particle yields and flow harmonics. For initial eccentricities, we use the results of Monte Carlo Glauber model. We fix the blast-wave model parameters by fitting the transverse momentum spectra of identified particles at the Large…
I review some topics in the production and decays of heavy flavours that are relevant for collider physics. In particular, I discuss the present status and some recent progress related to masses, parton densities and fragmentation functions of heavy quarks, as well as threshold resummation, polarized onium production at high transverse momentum, and a factorization theorem for $B \toππ$ decays.
In these proceedings we report recent progress on understanding hadron and jet production in electron-nucleus collisions at the future Electron-Ion Collider [1,2]. These processes will play an essential role in the exploration of the partonic structure of nuclei and the study of parton shower evolution in strongly-interacting matter. We employ the framework of soft-collinear effective theory, generalized to include in-medium interactions, to present the first theoretical results for inclusive hadron and jet cross sections, as well as the jet charge modification in deep inelastic scattering on …
We review recent progress in the theoretical description of hard probes in heavy-ion collisions within the framework of Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET). Firstly, we consider the inclusive production of heavy flavor mesons and jets with a small radius parameter in proton-proton collisions. Secondly, we describe how in-medium effects can be incorporated consistently with the proton-proton baseline calculations. The in-medium interactions are described by Glauber gluon interactions. We present results for the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ which is most commonly used to study the que…

We present the new CTEQ-TEA global analysis of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In this analysis, parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the nucleon are determined within the Hessian method at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD, based on the most recent measurements from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and a variety of world collider data. Because of difficulties in fitting both the ATLAS 7 and 8 TeV $W$ and $Z$ vector boson production cross section data, we present four families of (N)NLO CTEQ-TEA PDFs, named CT18, A, X and Z PDFs, respectively. We study the impact of …

A linear e+e- collider (LC) could go into operation in the next decade. The LHC is currently exploring the Higgs sector of the SM, various supersymmetric extensions and other models. The LC is necessary to complete the profile of a Higgs boson of any model. Experimental analyses and theory calculations for Higgs physics at the LC are currently performed. We review recent progress, as presented at the LCWS 2011 in Granada, Spain.
