We studied the dynamics of solvated electrons in the early stage of plasma generation in water induced with an intense femtosecond laser pulse. According to the decay kinetics of solvated electrons, fast recombination process of solvated electrons (geminate recombination) occurred with a more prolonged lifetime (500 ps to 1 ns) than that observed in previous pulse photolysis studies (10-100 ps). This unusually longer lifetime is attributed to additional production of solvated electrons due to abundant free electrons generated with the laser-induced plasma, implying significant influence of free electrons on the dynamics of solvated electrons.
Below band gap formation of solvated electrons in neutral water clusters using pump-probe photoelectron imaging is compared with recent data for liquid water and with above band gap excitation studies in the liquid and clusters. Similar relaxation times in the order of 200 fs and 1-2 ps are retrieved for below and above band gap excitation, in both clusters and liquid. The relaxation times independence from the generation process indicates that these times are dominated by the solvent response, which is significantly slower than the different solvated electron formation processes. The analysis…
We study the structural dynamics of photoexcited [Co(terpy)2]2+ in an aqueous solution with ultrafast x-ray diffuse scattering experiments conducted at the Linac Coherent Light Source. Through direct comparisons with density functional theory calculations, our analysis shows that the photoexcitation event leads to elongation of the Co-N bonds, followed by coherent Co-N bond length oscillations arising from the impulsive excitation of a vibrational mode dominated by the symmetrical stretch of all six Co-N bonds. This mode has a period of 0.33 ps and decays on a subpicosecond time scale. We find…
The terahertz (THz) response of solvated electrons in liquid water is studied in nonlinear ultrafast pump-probe experiments. Free electrons with concentrations from c_e = 4 to 140 \times 10-6 moles/liter are generated by high-field THz or near-infrared multiphoton excitation. The time-resolved change of the dielectric function as mapped by broadband THz pulses exhibits pronounced oscillations persisting up to 30 ps. Their frequency increases with electron concentration from 0.2 to 1.5 THz. The oscillatory response is assigned to impulsively excited coherent polarons involving coupled electron …
We have investigated the electron attachment dynamics of uracil in water using accurate wave-function and QM/MM methods. The initial electron attached state is found to be localized on the water and mixing of electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom leads to the transfer of electron from the water to the uracil. The water molecules around the uracil stabilize the uracil bound anion by creating an extensive hydrogen-bonding network. The presence of the bulk water environment accelerates the rate of electron attachment to uracil and the complete electron transfer from water to the uracil happen…
A review with 106 references of the recent advances in understanding the structure, dynamics, and photodynamics of solvated electrons in polar liquids (and, to some degree, clusters): water, alcohols, ammonia, ethers. Both the orthodox (cavity) and heterodox (multimer anion) pictures of the solvated electron are discussed.
We have investigated the solvation dynamics and the genuine binding energy and photoemission anisotropy of the solvated electron in neutral water clusters with a combination of time-resolved photoelectron velocity map imaging and electron scattering simulations. The dynamics was probed with a UV probe pulse following above-band-gap excitation with a EUV pump pulse. The solvation dynamics is completed within about 2 ps. Only a single band is observed in the spectra, with no indication for isomers with distinct binding energies. Data analysis with an electron scattering model reveals a genuine b…
The solvated electron represents an elementary quantum system in a liquid environment. Electrons solvated in water have raised strong interest because of their prototypical properties, their role in radiation chemistry, and their relevance for charge separation and transport. Nonequilibrium dynamics of photogenerated electrons in water occur on ultrafast time scales and include charge transfer, localization, and energy dissipation processes. We present new insight in the role of fluctuating electric fields of the liquid for generating electrons in presence of an external terahertz field and ad…
Predicting the asymmetric structure and dynamics of solvated hydroxide and hydronium in water has been a challenging task from ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD). The difficulty mainly comes from a lack of accurate and efficient exchange-correlation functional in elucidating the amphiphilic nature and the ubiquitous proton transfer behaviors of the two ions. By adopting the strongly-constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA functional in AIMD simulations, we systematically examine the amphiphilic properties, the solvation structures, the electronic structures, and the dynamic prope…
Molecular fragment or embedding methods are powerful techniques for overcoming scalability limitations in electronic structure theory by dividing large molecular systems into individual units that are small enough to be treated using standard techniques. Our group has developed a linear-scaling coupled-cluster based fragment effective field method, molecular cluster perturbation theory (MCPT), that provides a systematically improvable description of the electronic wavefunction and is scalable to thousands of atoms using the Aces4 massively parallel software package. We will present a systemati…
A subsystem approach for obtaining electron binding energies in the valence region and apply it to the case of halide ions (X$^-$, X = F-At) in water. This approach is based on electronic structure calculations combining the relativistic equation of motion coupled-cluster method for electron detachment (EOM-IP-CCSD) and density functional theory via the frozen density embedding (FDE) approach, using structures from classical molecular dynamics with polarizable force fields for discrete systems (in the present study, droplets containing the anion and 50 water molecules). Our results indicate on…
We present an EOM-CCSD based QM/MM study on the electron attachment process to cytosine, solvated in water. The microhydration studies cannot capture the effect of bulk water environment on the electron attachment process and one need to include large number of water molecules in the calculation to get converged results. The electron attachment in the bulk solvated cytosine happened through a doorway mechanism, where the initial electron is localized on water. The electron subsequently gets transferred to cytosine by mixing of electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom which happens at an ultra…
The distinct structures of contact ion pairs in water are identified. Nonlinear infrared (IR) spectroscopy and theoretical calculations allow for the separation and assignment of spectral features and interactions.
We discern hydration geometries around the sugar-phosphate-backbone of an RNA double helix at the molecular level. RNA disordering upon melting is connected with a transition from ordered water structures towards local phosphate group hydration shells.
We study the effects of ions on the reorientation dynamics of liquid water with polarization-resolved femtosecond mid-infared spectroscopy. We probe the anisotropy of the excitation of the O-D stretch vibration of HDO molecules in solutions of NaCl, NaI and tetra-alkylammonium bromide salts in 8 percent HDO:H2O. We find that the reorientation O-D groups of HDO molecules hydrating the Cl- and I- anions occurs on two different time scales with time constants of 2pm0.3 ps and 9pm2 ps. The fast component is due to a wobbling motion of the O-D group that keeps the hydrogen bond with the halogenic a…
Because it is sensitive to fluctuations occurring over femtoseconds to picoseconds, gigahertz-to-terahertz dielectric relaxation spectroscopy can provide a valuable window into water's most rapid intermolecular motions. In response, we have built a vector network analyzer dielectric spectrometer capable of measuring absorbance and index of refraction in this frequency regime with unprecedented precision. Using this to determine the complex dielectric response of water and aqueous salt solutions from 5.9 GHz to 1.12 THz (which we provide in the SI), we have obtained strong new constraints on th…
We applied angular X-ray Cross-Correlation analysis (XCCA) to scattering images from a femtosecond resolution LCLS X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) pump-probe experiment with solvated PtPOP ([Pt$_2$(P$_2$O$_5$H$_2$)$_4$]$^{4-}$) metal complex molecules. The molecules were pumped with linear polarized laser pulses creating an excited state population with a preferred orientational (alignment) direction. Two time scales of $1.9\pm1.5$ ps and $46\pm10$ ps were revealed by model-independent XCCA, associated with an internal structural changes and rotational dephasing, respectively. Our studies ill…
Mossbauer spectroscopy and neutron scattering measurements on proteins embedded in solvents including water and aqueous mixtures have emphasized the observation of the distinctive temperature dependence of the atomic mean square displacements, <u2>, commonly referred to as the dynamic transition at some temperature Td. At low temperatures, <u2> increases slowly, but it assume stronger temperature dependence after crossing Td, which depends on the time/frequency resolution of the spectrometer. Various authors have made connection of the dynamics of solvated proteins including the dynamic transi…
Ionization of polar liquids and glasses often yields metastable electron centers collectively known as weakly bound (wb) electrons that absorb to the red of the ground state of the solvated/trapped electron. Formation of these species is thought to be the initial stage of electron localization in such media. Although these commonly occurring species have distinctive absorption spectra, no insight into their structure currently exists. In this Letter, we address the structure of the wb electron in low-temperature ice-Ih theoretically, using a combination of mixed quantum-classical (MQC) floatin…
We report an experimental investigation on the irradiation of copper thin films with high repetition rate femtosecond laser pulses (1040 nm, 50 MHz), in ambient air and liquid water. We observe a novel, striking phenomenon of chromatic copper oxides (cupric oxide and cuprous oxide) annuli generation. The characteristic features of the chromatic copper oxide annuli are studied by exploiting micro-Raman Spectroscopy, Optical and Scanning Electron Microscopies. In the case of irradiation in water, the seldom investigated effects of the immersion time, after irradiation with a fixed number of puls…
We investigate the radiolysis of liquid water confined in a porous silica matrix by means of an event-by-event Monte Carlo simulation of electron penetration in this composite system. We focus on the physical and physicochemical effects that take place in the picosecond range, before the radicals start to diffuse and react. We determine the radiolytic yields of the primary species for a system made of cylindrical pores filled with water over a wide range of pore radii $R_{\rm C}$. We show that the relative position of the conduction band edge $V_0$ in both materials plays a major role in the r…
Observing changes in molecular structure requires atomic-scale Ångstrom and femtosecond spatio-temporal resolution. We use the Fourier transform (FT) variant of laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED), FT-LIED, to directly retrieve the molecular structure of ${\rm H_2O^+}$ with picometre and femtosecond resolution without a priori knowledge of the molecular structure nor the use of retrieval algorithms or ab initio calculations. We identify a symmetrically stretched ${\rm H_2O^+}$ field-dressed structure that is most likely in the ground electronic state. We subsequently study the nuclear re…
Picosecond geminate recombination kinetics for electrons generated by multiphoton ionization of liquid water become power dependent when the radiance of the excitation light is greater than 0.3-0.5 TW/cm^2 (the terawatt regime). To elucidate the mechanism of this power dependence, tri- 400 nm photon ionization of water has been studied using pump-probe laser spectroscopy on the pico- and femtosecond time scales. We suggest that the observed kinetic transformations are caused by a rapid temperature jump in the sample. Such a jump is inherent to multiphoton ionization in the terawatt regime, whe…
Signatures of solvated excess protons in infrared difference absorption spectra, such as the continuum band between the water bend and stretch bands, have been experimentally known for a long time, but the theoretical basis for linking spectral signatures with the microscopic proton-transfer mechanism so far relied on normal-mode analysis. We analyze the excess-proton dynamics in ab initio molecular-dynamics simulations of aqueous hydrochloric acid solutions by trajectory-decomposition techniques. The continuum band in the 2000 - 3000 cm$^{-1 }$ range is shown to be due to normal-mode oscillat…

The extent of contact and solvent shared ion pairs of phosphate groups with Na$^+$, Ca$^{2+}$ and Mg$^{2+}$ ions in aqueous environment and their relevance for the stability of polyanionic DNA and RNA structures is highly debated. Employing the asymmetric phosphate stretching vibration of dimethyl phosphate (DMP), a model system of the sugar-phosphate backbone of DNA and RNA, we present linear infrared, femtosecond infrared pump-probe and absorptive 2D-IR spectra that report on contact ion pair formation via the presence of blue shifted spectral signatures. Compared to the linear infrared spec…
Solvation of ions is ubiquitous on our planet. Solvated ions have a profound effect on the behavior of ionic solutions, which is crucial in nature and technology. Experimentally, ions have been classified into "structure makers" or "structure breakers", depending on whether they slow down or accelerate the solution dynamics. Theoretically, the dynamics of ions has been explained by a dielectric friction model combining hydrodynamics and charge-dipole interaction in the continuum description. However, both approaches lack a microscopic structural basis, leaving the microscopic understanding of …
Structure and dynamics of water remain a challenge. Resolving the properties of hydrogen bonding lies at the heart of this puzzle. Here we employ ab initio Molecular Dynamics (AIMD) simulations over a wide temperature range. The total simulation time was approx 2 ns. Both bulk water and water in the presence of a small hydrophobic molecule were simulated. We show that large-angle jumps and bond bifurcations are fundamental properties of water dynamics and that they are intimately coupled to both local density and hydrogen bond stretch oscillations in scales from about 60 to a few hundred femto…
Unexpected spectral features are observed in the two photon spectrum of the pure water in the forward direction when an 80 femtosecond laser pulse is focused at 10^10Wcm-2 or less. Such intensity is much lower than the breakdown or stimulated threshold of the liquid water. The two broad features are about 2700cm-1 and 5000cm-1 red shifted from the hyper-Rayleigh wavelength, respectively, and they are quadratic with the laser intensity. They do not match the known Raman or hyper-Raman frequencies of water, and they are both centered at a narrow angle in the forward direction. Several other liqu…
Polyatomic molecules in strong laser fields can undergo substantial nuclear motion within tens of femtoseconds. Ion imaging methods based on dissociation or Coulomb explosion therefore have difficulty faithfully recording the geometry dependence of the field ionization that initiates the dissociation process. Here we compare the strong-field double ionization and subsequent dissociation of water (both H$_2$O and D$_2$O) in 10-fs and 40-fs 800-nm laser pulses. We find that 10-fs pulses turn off before substantial internuclear motion occurs, whereas rapid internuclear motion can take place durin…
Temporal evolution of transient absorption spectra for pre-solvated electron (e-) generated by biphotonic (200 nm) ionization of liquid H2O and D2O has been studied on femto- and pico- second time scales. These spectra were obtained in the intervals of 50 nm between 500 and 1700 nm. Two distinctive regimes of the spectral evolution were observed. In both of these regimes, the spectral profile changes considerably with delay time. For t<1ps, two new features (the 1150 nm band and 1400 nm shoulder) were observed in the spectral region where O-H overtones appear in the spectra of light water. The…
Two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy experiments have presented new results regarding the dynamics of the hydrated excess proton (aka <q>hydronium</q> cation solvated in water). It has been suggested by these experiments that the hydrated excess proton has an anisotropy reorientation timescale of 2.5 ps, which can be viewed as being somewhat long lived. Through the use of both the reactive molecular dynamics Multistate-Empirical Valence Bond method and Experiment Directed Simulation Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics we show that timescales of the same magnitude are obtained that correspond to prot…
Biomolecules couple to their aqueous environment through a variety of noncovalent interactions. Local structures at the surface of DNA and RNA are frequently determined by hydrogen bonds with water molecules, complemented by non-specific electrostatic and many-body interactions. Structural fluctuations of the water shell result in fluctuating Coulomb forces on polar and/or ionic groups of the biomolecular structure and in a breaking and reformation of hydrogen bonds. Two-dimensional infrared (2D-IR) spectroscopy of vibrational modes of DNA and RNA gives insight into local hydration geometries,…
