The attention mechanism can refine the extracted feature maps and boost the classification performance of the deep network, which has become an essential technique in computer vision and natural language processing. However, the memory and computational costs of the dot-product attention mechanism increase quadratically with the spatio-temporal size of the input. Such growth hinders the usage of attention mechanisms considerably in application scenarios with large-scale inputs. In this Letter, we propose a Linear Attention Mechanism (LAM) to address this issue, which is approximately equivalent to dot-product attention with computational efficiency. Such a design makes the incorporation between attention mechanisms and deep networks much more flexible and versatile. Based on the proposed LAM, we re-factor the skip connections in the raw U-Net and design a Multi-stage Attention ResU-Net (MAResU-Net) for semantic segmentation from fine-resolution remote sensing images. Experiments conducted on the Vaihingen dataset demonstrated the effectiveness and efficiency of our MAResU-Net. Recent research on remote sensing object detection has largely focused on improving the representation of oriented bounding boxes but has overlooked the unique prior knowledge presented in remote sensing scenarios. Such prior knowledge can be useful because tiny remote sensing objects may be mistakenly detected without referencing a sufficiently long-range context, and the long-range context required by different types of objects can vary. In this paper, we take these priors into account and propose the Large Selective Kernel Network (LSKNet). LSKNet can dynamically adjust its large spatial re…
Semantic segmentation of remotely sensed images plays a crucial role in precision agriculture, environmental protection, and economic assessment. However, due to the complicated information caused by the increased spatial resolution, state-of-the-art deep learning algorithms normally utilize complex network architectures for segmentation, which usually incurs high computational complexity. Specifically, the high-caliber performance of the convolutional neural network (CNN) heavily relies…

In this paper, we discuss the role of discriminative features in object detection, and then propose a Critical Feature Capturing Network (CFC-Net) to improve detection accuracy from three aspects: building powerful feature representation, refining preset anchors…

Remote sensing images are known of having complex backgrounds, high intra-class variance and large variation of scales, which bring challenge to semantic segmentation. We present LoG-CAN, a multi-scale semantic segmentation network with a global class-aware (GCA) module and local class-aware (LCA) modules to remote sensing images. Specifically, the GCA module captures the global representations of class-wise context modeling to circumvent background interference; the LCA modules generate local class representations as intermediate aware elements, indirectly associating pixels with global class…

Semantic segmentation in high resolution remote sensing images is a fundamental and challenging task. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs), such as fully convolutional network (FCN) and SegNet, have shown outstanding performance in many segmentation tasks. One key pillar of these successes is mining useful information from features in convolutional layers for producing high resolution segmentation maps. For example, FCN nonlinearly combines high-level features extracted from last convolutional layers; whereas SegNet utilizes a deconvolutional network which takes as input only coarse, high-leve…
Object detection is a fundamental and challenging problem in aerial and satellite image analysis. More recently, a two-stage detector Faster R-CNN is proposed and demonstrated to be a promising tool for object detection in optical remote sensing images, while the sparse and dense characteristic of objects in remote sensing images is complexity. It is unreasonable to treat all images with the same region proposal strategy, and this treatment limits the performance of two-stage detectors. In this paper, we propose a novel and effective approach, named deep adaptive proposal network (DAPNet), add…

Semantic segmentation is an essential part of deep learning. In recent years, with the development of remote sensing big data, semantic segmentation has been increasingly used in remote sensing. Deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) face the challenge of feature fusion: very-high-resolution remote sensing image multisource data fusion can increase the network's learnable information, which is conducive to correctly classifying target objects by DCNNs; simultaneously, the fusion of high-level abstract features and low-level spatial features can improve the classification accuracy at the bo…

Semantic segmentation requires methods capable of learning high-level features while dealing with large volume of data. Towards such goal, Convolutional Networks can learn specific and adaptable features based on the data. However, these networks are not capable of processing a whole remote sensing image, given its huge size. To overcome such limitation, the image is processed using fixed size patches. The definition of the input patch size is usually performed empirically (evaluating several sizes) or imposed (by network constraint). Both strategies suffer from drawbacks and could not lead to…

Recently, the convolutional neural network has brought impressive improvements for object detection. However, detecting tiny objects in large-scale remote sensing images still remains challenging. First, the extreme large input size makes the existing object detection solutions too slow for practical use. Second, the massive and complex backgrounds cause serious false alarms. Moreover, the ultratiny objects increase the difficulty of accurate detection. To tackle these problems, we propose a unified and self-reinforced network called remote sensing region-based convolutional neural network ($\…

Siamese networks are widely used for remote sensing change detection tasks. A vanilla siamese network has two identical feature extraction branches which share weights, these two branches work independently and the feature maps are not fused until about to be sent to a decoder head. However we find that it is critical to exchange information between two feature extraction branches at early stage for change detection task. In this work we present Mutual-Attention Siamese Network (MASNet), a general siamese network with mutual-attention plug-in, so to exchange information between the two feature…

Convolutional neural networks are currently the state-of-the-art algorithms for many remote sensing applications such as semantic segmentation or object detection. However, these algorithms are extremely sensitive to over-fitting, domain change and adversarial examples specifically designed to fool them.
