We first prove Kato's inequalities for the Laplacian and a Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger-type operator on smooth functions on closed Riemannian manifolds. We then apply the result to establish some new domination inequalities for spectral zeta functions and their related spectral zeta kernels on $n$-dimensional unit spheres using Kato's inequalities and majorisation techniques. Our results are the generalisations of Kato's comparison inequalities for Riemannian surfaces to $n$-dimensional closed Riemannian manifolds.
In this article, we show some domination results on the Hitchin fibration, mainly focusing on the $n$-Fuchsian fibers. More precisely, we show the energy density of associated harmonic map of an $n$-Fuchsian representation dominates the ones of all other representations in the same Hitchin fiber, which implies the domination of topological invariants: translation length spectrum and entropy. As applications of the energy density domination results, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of equivariant minimal (or maximal) surfaces in certain product Riemannian (or pseudo-Riemannian) manifold. …
We define Dirichlet type series associated with homology length spectra of Riemannian, or Finsler, manifolds, or polyhedra, and investigate some of their analytical properties. As a consequence we obtain an inequality analogous to Gromov's classical intersystolic inequality, but taking the whole homology length spectrum into account rather than just the systole.
The Ray-Singer analytic torsion is the zeta-function trace of a certain sum of logarithm operators on the de Rham complex. In this note we examine the residue analytic torsion, defined using the residue-trace instead of the spectral zeta function quasi-trace.
Let P be a selfadjoint elliptic operator of order m>0 acting on the sections of a Hermitian vector bundle over a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension n. General arguments show that its zeta and eta functions may have poles only at points of the form s=k/m, where k ranges over all non-zero integers less than or equal to n. In this paper, we construct elementary and explicit examples of perturbations of P which make the zeta and eta functions be singular at all the points at which they are allowed to have singularities. We proceed within three classes of operators: Dirac-type operators, self…
Let M be a compact oriented even-dimensional manifold. This note constructs a compact symplectic manifold S of the same dimension and a map f from S to M of strictly positive degree. The construction relies on two deep results: the first is a theorem of Ontaneda that gives a Riemannian manifold N of tightly pinched negative curvature which admits a map to M of degree equal to one; the second is a result of Donaldson on the existence of symplectic divisors. Given Ontaneda's negatively curved manifold N, the twistor space Z is symplectic. The manifold S is then a suitable multisection of the twi…
To a compact hyperbolic Riemann surface, we associate a finitely summable spectral triple whose underlying topological space is the limit set of a corresponding Schottky group, and whose ``Riemannian'' aspect (Hilbert space and Dirac operator) encode the boundary action through its Patterson-Sullivan measure. We prove that the ergodic rigidity theorem for this boundary action implies that the zeta functions of the spectral triple suffice to characterize the (anti-)conformal isomorphism class of the corresponding Riemann surface. Thus, you can hear the shape of a Riemann surface, by listening t…
Riemannian Geometry, Topology and Dynamics permit to introduce partially defined holomorphic functions on the variety of representations of the fundamental group of a manifold. The functions we consider are the complex valued Ray-Singer torsion, the Milnor-Turaev torsion, and the dynamical torsion. They are associated essentially to a closed smooth manifold equipped with a (co)Euler structure and a Riemannian metric in the first case, a smooth triangulation in the second case, and a smooth flow of type described in section 2 in the third case. In this paper we define these functions, describe …
Let (M^n, g) be a closed smooth Riemannian spin manifold and denote by D its Atiyah-Singer-Dirac operator. We study the variation of Riemannian metrics for the zeta function and functional determinant of D^2, and prove finiteness of the Morse index at stationary metrics, and local extremality at such metrics under general, i.e. not only conformal, change of metrics. In even dimensions, which is also a new case for the conformal Laplacian, the relevant stability operator is of log-polyhomogeneous pseudodifferential type, and we prove new results of independent interest, on the spectrum for such…
We give an integral representaion of the zeta-reguralized determinant of Laplacians on three dimensional Heisenberg manifolds, and study a behaivior of the values when we deform the uniform discrete subgroups. Heiseberg manifolds are the total space of a fiber bundle with a torus as the base space and a circle as a typical fiber, then the deformation of the uniform discrete subgroups means that the "radius" of the fiber goes to zero. We explain the lines of the calculations precisely for three dimensional cases and state the corresponding results for five dimensional Heisenberg manifolds. We s…
We consider a self-adjoint non-negative operator $H$ in a Hilbert space $\mathsf{L}^2(X,{\rm d}μ)$. We assume that the semigroup $(\mathrm{e}^{-t H})_{t>0}$ is defined by an integral kernel, $p$, which allows an estimate of the form $p(t,x,x)\le F_1(x)F_2(t)$ for all $(x,t)\in X\times\mathbb{R_+}$; we refer to $F_1$ as the \emph{control function}. We show that such an estimate leads to rather satisfying abstract results on relative compactness of perturbations of $H$ by potentials. It came as a surprise to us, however, that such an estimate holds for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on \emph{any}…
We prove that a representation from the fundamental group of a closed surface of negative Euler characteristic with values in the isometry group of a Riemannian manifold of sectional curvature bounded by -1 can be dominated by a Fuchsian representation. Moreover, we prove that the domination can be made strict, unless the representation is discrete and faithful in restriction to an invariant totally geodesic 2-plane of curvature -1. When applied to representations into PSL(2,R) of non-extremal Euler class, our result is a step forward in understanding the space of closed anti-de Sitter 3-manif…
Let $P$ be a non-negative self-adjoint Laplace type operator acting on sections of a hermitian vector bundle over a closed Riemannian manifold. In this paper we review the close relations between various $P$-related coefficients such as the mollified spectral counting coefficients, the heat trace coefficients, the resolvent trace coefficients, the residues of the spectral zeta function as well as certain Wodzicki residues. We then use the Wodzicki residue to obtain results about the local counting function of operators of Dirac and Laplace type. In particular, we express the second term of the…
In his approach to analytic number theory C. Deninger has suggested that to the Riemann zeta function $\hatζ(s)$ (resp. the zeta function $ζ_Y(s)$ of a smooth projective curve $Y$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, $q=p^f$)) one could possibly associate a foliated Riemannian laminated space $(S_{\mathbb{Q}}, \mathcal{F}, g, ϕ^t)$ (resp. $(S_Y, \mathcal{F}, g, ϕ^t)$) endowed with an action of a flow $ϕ^t$ whose primitive compact orbits should correspond to the primes of $\mathbb{Q}$ (resp. $Y$). The existence of such a foliated space and flow $ϕ^t$ is still unknown except when $Y$ is an ellipt…
