In MRI, motion artefacts are among the most common types of artefacts. They can degrade images and render them unusable for accurate diagnosis. Traditional methods, such as prospective or retrospective motion correction, have been proposed to avoid or alleviate motion artefacts. Recently, several other methods based on deep learning approaches have been proposed to solve this problem. This work proposes to enhance the performance of existing deep learning models by the inclusion of additional information present as image priors. The proposed approach has shown promising results and will be further investigated for clinical validity.
Motion artifacts often spoil the radiological interpretation of MR images, and in the most severe cases the scan needs be repeated, with additional costs for the provider. We discuss the application of a novel 3D retrospective rigid motion correction and reconstruction scheme for MRI, which leverages multiple scans contained in a MR session. Typically, in a multi-contrast MR session, motion does not equally affect all the scans, and some motion-free scans are generally available, so that we can exploit their anatomic similarity. The uncorrupted scan is used as a reference in a generalized rigi…

In this paper, we develop an efficient retrospective deep learning method called stacked U-Nets with self-assisted priors to address the problem of rigid motion artifacts in MRI. The proposed work exploits the usage of additional knowledge priors from the corrupted images themselves without the need for additional contrast data. The proposed network learns missed structural details through sharing auxiliary information from the contiguous slices of the same distorted subject. We further design a refinement stacked U-Nets that facilitates preserving of the image spatial details and hence improv…

To correct for respiratory motion in PET imaging, an interpretable and unsupervised deep learning technique, FlowNet-PET, was constructed. The network was trained to predict the optical flow between two PET frames from different breathing amplitude ranges. The trained model aligns different retrospectively-gated PET images, providing a final image with similar counting statistics as a non-gated image, but without the blurring effects. FlowNet-PET was applied to anthropomorphic digital phantom data, which provided the possibility to design robust metrics to quantify the corrections. When compar…
Purpose: To enable rigid-body motion tolerant parallel volumetric magnetic resonance imaging by retrospective head motion correction on a variety of spatio-temporal scales and imaging sequences. Theory and methods: Tolerance against rigid-body motion is based on distributed and incoherent sampling orders for boosting a joint retrospective motion estimation and reconstruction framework. Motion resilience stems from the encoding redundancy in the data, as generally provided by the coil array. Hence, it does not require external sensors, navigators or training data, so the methodology is readily …

Retrospective artifact correction (RAC) improves image quality post acquisition and enhances image usability. Recent machine learning driven techniques for RAC are predominantly based on supervised learning and therefore practical utility can be limited as data with paired artifact-free and artifact-corrupted images are typically insufficient or even non-existent. Here we show that unwanted image artifacts can be disentangled and removed from an image via an RAC neural network learned with unpaired data. This implies that our method does not require matching artifact-corrupted data to be eithe…

A model-based reconstruction framework is proposed for MOtion-Corrected and High-resolution anatomically-Assisted (MOCHA) reconstruction of ASL data. In this framework, all low-resolution ASL control-label pairs are used to reconstruct a single high-resolution cerebral blood flow (CBF) map, corrected for rigid motion, point-spread-function (PSF) blurring and partial-volume effect (PVE).Six volunteers were recruited for CBF imaging using PCASL labelling, 2-shot 3D-GRASE sequences and high-resolution T1-weighted MRI. For two volunteers, high-resolution scans with double and triple resolution in …
