Determination of stellar age is a crucial task in astrophysics research. Different methods are nowadays used either model dependent or based on calibrated empirical relations. The most reliable results are generally obtained when different methods are used in complementary way. We propose a new method for the age determination of young stellar associations and open clusters (ages < 125 Myr), which can allow to further constrain the age when used together with other methods. We explore the amplitude of the photometric variability in bins of color and rotation period of five young associations and clusters spanning an interval of ages from 1-3 Myr to 625 Myr (Taurus, rho Ophiuchi, Upper Scorpius, Pleiades, and Praesepe), which all have high-quality time-series photometry from Kepler K2 campaigns. In the low-mass regime, we find that stars with similar color and rotation period but different ages exhibit different amplitudes of their photometric variability, with younger stars showing a larger photometric variability than older stars. The decline of photometric variability amplitude versus age in stars with similar color and rotation period can be in principle calibrated and be adopted as an additional empirical relation to constrain the age of young associations and open clusters, provided that time-series photometry is available for their low-mass members.
As part of the project Pathways to Habitability (http://path.univie.ac.at/), we study the properties of the stellar winds of low-mass and Sun-like stars, and their influences on the atmospheres of potentially habitable planets. For this purpose, we combine mapping of stellar magnetic fields with magnetohydrodynamic wind models.
Results from BVRI photometric observations of the pre-main sequence star V1704 Cyg collected during the time period from August 2010 to December 2017 are presented. The star is located in the star-forming HII region IC 5070 and it exhibits photometric variability in all-optical passbands. After analyzing the obtained data, V1704 Cyg is classified as a classical T Tauri star.
An enigmatic and rare type of young stellar object is the FU Orionis class. The members are interpreted as "outbursting," that is, currently in a state of enhanced accretion by several orders of magnitude relative to the more modest disk-to-star accretion rates measured in typical T Tauri stars. They are key to our understanding of the history of stellar mass assembly and pre-main sequence evolution, as well as critical to consider in the chemical and physical evolution of the circumstellar environment -- where planets form. A common supposition is that *all* T Tauri stars undergo repeated suc…
We report new photometric observations of the 200000 year old naked weak-line run-away T Tauri star Par 1724, located north of the Trapezium cluster in Orion. We observed in the broad band filters B, V, R, and I using the 90cm Dutch telescope on La Silla, the 80cm Wendelstein telescope, and a 25cm telescope of the University Observatory Jena in Grossschwabhausen near Jena. The photometric data in V and R are consistent with a 5.7 day rotation period due to spots, as observed before between 1960ies and 2000. Also, for the first time, we present evidence for a long-term 9 or 17.5 year cycle in p…
The known FU Ori-type young eruptive stars are exceedingly rare (a dozen or so confirmed objects) and 2MASS J06593158-0405277, with its 2014 outburst, is likely the latest addition to the family. All members have displayed just one such eruption in their recorded history, an event lasting for decades. To test the FU Ori nature of 2MASS J06593158-0405277, we have reconstructed its photometric history by measuring its brightness on Harvard photographic plates spanning the time interval 1899-1989. No previous large amplitude eruption similar to that initiated in 2014 has been found, as in bona fi…
In case of pre-main sequence objects, the only way to determine age and mass is by fitting theoretical isochrones on color-magnitude (alternatively luminosity-temperature) diagrams. Since young stellar objects exhibit photometric variability over wide range in magnitude and colors, the age and mass determined by fitting isochrones is expected to be inaccurate, if not erroneous. These in turn will badly affect any study carried out on age spread and process of star formation. Since we have carried out very extensive photometric observations of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), we decided to use o…
Low-mass, pre-main sequence stars possess intense high-energy radiation fields as a result of their strong stellar magnetic activity. This stellar UV and X-ray radiation may have a profound impact on the lifetimes of protoplanetary disks. We aim to constrain the X-ray-induced photoevaporation rates of protoplanetary disks orbiting low-mass stars by analyzing serendipitous XMM-Newton and Chandra X-ray observations of candidate nearby (D $<$ 100 pc), young (age $<$ 100 Myr) M stars identified in the GALEX Nearby Young-Star Survey (GALNYSS).
We present our photometric observations of GM Cep, a solar type variable in the young (~4 Myr) open cluster Trumpler 37. The star is known as a classical T Tauri star with a circumstellar disk and active accretion. GM\,Cep was suspected to undergo an outburst, thus a candidate for an EXor-type variable. In our monitoring campaign observations in 2010-2011, GM Cep experienced a ~0.82 mag brightness decrease in the R band lasting for 39 days, and frequent, transient flare-like episodes with amplitude < 1 mag, each lasting for about 10 days. The brightening was accompanied with a bluer color, pre…
We present constraints on the variability and binarity of young stars in the central 10 arcseconds (~0.4 pc) of the Milky Way Galactic Center (GC) using Keck Adaptive Optics data over a 12 year baseline. Given our experiment's photometric uncertainties, at least 36% of our sample's known early-type stars are variable. We identified eclipsing binary systems by searching for periodic variability. In our sample of spectroscopically confirmed and likely early-type stars, we detected the two previously discovered GC eclipsing binary systems. We derived the likely binary fraction of main sequence, e…
Anomalies in the abundance measurements of short lived radionuclides in meteorites indicate that the protosolar nebulae was irradiated by a large number of energetic particles ($E\gtrsim10\,$MeV), often called solar cosmic rays. The particle flux of the contemporary Sun cannot explain these anomalies, but, similar to \mbox{T Tauri} stars, the young Sun was more active and probably produced enough high energy particles. However, the stellar particle (SP) flux of young stars is essentially unknown. We model the impact of high-energy ionization sources on the chemistry of the circumstellar enviro…
The very young open cluster NGC 6383 centered on the O-star binary HD 159176 is an interesting place for studying the impact of early-type stars with strong radiation fields and powerful winds on the formation processes of low-mass stars. To investigate this process, it is necessary to determine the characteristics (age, presence, or absence of circumstellar material) of the population of low-mass pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars in the cluster. We obtained deep U B V (R I)_c H-alpha photometric data of the entire cluster as well as medium-resolution optical spectroscopy of a subsample of X-ray s…
Results from long-term multicolor optical photometric observations of the pre-main sequence stars FHO 26, FHO 27, FHO 28, FHO 29 and V1929 Cyg collected during the period from June 1997 to December 2014 are presented. The objects are located in the dense molecular cloud L935, named "Gulf of Mexico", in the field between the North America and Pelican nebulae. All stars from our study exhibit strong photometric variability in all optical passbands. Using our BVRI observations and data published by other authors, we tried to define the reasons for the observed brightness variations. The presented…
We present radiation transfer models of rotating young stellar objects (YSOs) with hotspots in their atmospheres, inner disk warps and other 3-D effects in the nearby circumstellar environment. Our models are based on the geometry expected from the magneto-accretion theory, where material moving inward in the disk flows along magnetic field lines to the star and creates stellar hotspots upon impact. Due to rotation of the star and magnetosphere, the disk is variably illuminated. We compare our model light curves to data from the Spitzer YSOVAR project (Morales-Calderon et al. 2014, Cody et al.…
We present the results of a simultaneous monitoring, lasting more than 2 years, of the optical and near-infrared photometric and polarimetric activity of the variable protostar PV Cep. During the monitoring period, an outburst has occurred in all the photometric bands, whose declining phase ($Δ$J $\approx$ 3 mag) lasted about 120 days. A time lag of $\sim$ 30 days between optical and infrared light curves has been measured and interpreted in the framework of an accretion event. This latter is directly recognizable in the significant variations of the near-infrared colors, that appear bluer in …
We present Keck Interferometer observations of T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars with a spatial resolution of a few milliarcseconds and a spectral resolution of ~2000. Our observations span the K-band, and include the Br gamma transition of Hydrogen and the v=2-0 and v=3-1 transitions of carbon monoxide. For several targets we also present data from Keck/NIRSPEC that provide higher spectral resolution, but a seeing-limited spatial resolution, of the same spectral features. We analyze the Br gamma emission in the context of both disk and infall/outflow models, and conclude that the Br gamma emissi…
We aim at constraining the angular momentum evolution of low mass stars by measuring their rotation rates when they begin to evolve freely towards the ZAMS, i.e. after the disk accretion phase has stopped. We conducted a multi-site photometric monitoring of the young open cluster h Persei that has an age of ~13 Myr. The observations were done in the I-band using 4 different telescopes and the variability study is sensitive to periods from less than 0.2 day to 20 days. Rotation periods are derived for 586 candidate cluster members over the mass range 0.4<=M/Msun<=1.4. The rotation period distri…
We present a new, BVIc photometric survey of the young open cluster IC4665, which improves on previous studies of this young cluster by incorporating a rigorous standardization procedure, thus providing high-fidelity colors and magnitudes for cluster members. We use this new photometric dataset to reevaluate the properties (age and distance) of IC4665. Namely, using a statistical approach incorporating Tau^2 CMD modeling, we measure a pre-main-sequence isochrone age and distance of 36+-9 Myr and 360+-12 pc, as well as a upper-main-sequence turn-off age and distance of 42+-12 Myr and 357+-12 pc…
This is the first in a series of papers presenting methods and results from the Young Solar Analogs Project, which began in 2007. This project monitors both spectroscopically and photometrically a set of 31 young (300 - 1500 Myr) solar-type stars with the goal of gaining insight into the space environment of the Earth during the period when life first appeared. From our spectroscopic observations we derive the Mount Wilson $S$ chromospheric activity index ($S_{\rm MW}$), and describe the method we use to transform our instrumental indices to $S_{\rm MW}$ without the need for a color term. We i…
Results from the BV(RI)c photometric observations of the young stellar object V2492 Cyg collected in the period from April 2018 to September 2020 are presented. These observations are a part of our monitoring of the star that began in 2010 and continuing to date. V2492 Cyg is located in the Pelican Nebula, and its variability was explained by both accretion and extinction events. The new photometric data show that the star continues to exhibit rapid irregular variability in all bands. In the period from March 2019 to May 2020, we registered a prolonged decrease event in the light curve of V249…
During two weeks of nearly continuous optical photometry of the young open cluster NGC 2244 obtained by the MOST satellite, we discovered two new SPB stars, GSC 00154-00785 and GSC 00154-01871. We present frequency analyses of the MOST light curves of these stars, which reveal two oscillation frequencies (0.61 and 0.71 c/d) in GSC 00154-00785 and two (0.40 and 0.51 c/d) in GSC 00154-01871. These frequency ranges are consistent with g-modes of $\ell \leq 2$ excited in models of main-sequence or pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars of masses 4.5 - 5 $M_{\odot}$ and solar composition $(X, Z)= (0.7, 0.02…
Characterising stellar and circumstellar properties of embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) is mandatory for understanding the early stages of the stellar evolution. This task requires the combination of both spectroscopy and photometry, covering the widest possible wavelength range, to disentangle the various protostellar components and activities. As part of the POISSON project, we present a multi-wavelength spectroscopic and photometric investigation of embedded YSOs in L1641, aimed to derive the stellar parameters and evolutionary stages and to infer their accretion properties. Our databa…
Gaia19fct is one of the Gaia-alerted eruptive young stars that has undergone several brightening events. We conducted monitoring observations using multi-filter optical and near-infrared photometry, as well as near-infrared spectroscopy, to understand the physical properties of Gaia19fct and investigate whether it fits into the historically defined two classes. We present the analyses of light curves, color variations, spectral lines, and CO modeling. The light curves show at least five brightening events since 2015, and the multi-filter color evolutions are mostly gray. The gray evolution ind…
We present time-series photometry of stars located in the extremely young open cluster Berkeley 59. Using the 1.04 m telescope at ARIES, Nainital, we have identified 42 variables in a field of 13'x13' around the cluster. The probable members of the cluster are identified using (V, V-I) colour-magnitude diagram and (J-H, H-K) colour-colour diagram. Thirty one variables are found to be pre-main sequence stars associated with the cluster. The ages and masses of pre-main sequence stars are derived from colour-magnitude diagram by fitting theoretical models to the observed data points. The ages of …
We applied the extinction-disk-principal vectors approach to near infrared photometric data of the Taurus-Auriga region and Orion Nebula young stellar clusters. By assuming that the cluster age is represented by the median value of the age distribution we are able to derive the distribution of stellar masses. We showed that the resulting initial mass function (IMF) for these two young stellar clusters compares remarkably well and might be a robust representation of the IMF obtained by spectroscopic or photometric methods. The method also yields extinction and disk contribution for each star. T…
We use HST observations to study the LMC's young cluster NGC1844. We estimate the fraction and the mass-ratio distribution of photometric binaries and report that the main sequence presents an intrinsic breadth which can not be explained in terms of photometric errors only, and is unlikely due to differential reddening. We attempt some interpretation of this feature, including stellar rotation, binary stars, and the presence of multiple stellar populations with different age, metallicity, helium, or C+N+O abundance. Although we exclude age, helium, and C+N+O variations to be responsible of the…
We present here optical I-band photometric variability study down to $\simeq$ 19 mag of a young ($\sim$2-3 Myr) star-forming region IC 348 in the Perseus molecular cloud. We aim to explore the fast rotation (in the time-scales of hours) in Very Low Mass stars (VLMs) including Brown Dwarfs (BDs). From a sample of 177 light-curves using our new I-band observations, we detect new photometric variability in 22 young M-dwarfs including 6 BDs, which are bonafide members in IC 348 and well-characterized in the spectral type of M-dwarfs. Out of 22 variables, 11 M dwarfs including one BD show hour-scal…
Starspots are important manifestations of stellar magnetic activity. By studying their behaviour in young solar analogues, we can unravel the properties of their magnetic cycles. This gives crucial information of the underlying dynamo process. Comparisons with the solar cycle enable us to infer knowledge about how the solar dynamo has evolved during the Sun's lifetime. Here we study the correlation between photometric brightness variations, spottedness and mean temperature in V889 Her, a young solar analogue. Our data covers 18 years of spectroscopic and 25 years of photometric observations. W…
The main goal of this work is to characterize the mass accretion and ejection processes of the classical T Tauri star V354 Mon, a member of the young stellar cluster NGC 2264. In March 2008, photometric and spectroscopic observations of V354 Mon were obtained simultaneously with the CoRoT satellite, the 60 cm telescope at the Observatório Pico dos Dias (LNA - Brazil) equipped with a CCD camera and Johnson/Cousins BVRI filters, and the SOPHIE échelle spectrograph at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence (CNRS - France). The light curve of V354 Mon shows periodical minima (P = 5.26 +/- 0.50 days) t…
TX Cnc is a member of the young open cluster NGC 2632. In the present paper, four CCD epochs of light minimum and a complete V light curve of TX Cnc are presented. A period investigation based on all available photoelectric or CCD data showed that it is found to be superimposed on a long-term increase ($dP/dt=+3.97\times{10^{-8}}$\,days/year), and a weak evidence suggests that it includes a small-amplitude period oscillation ($A_3=0.^{d}0028$; $T_3=26.6\,years$). The light curves in the V band obtained in 2004 were analyzed with the 2003 version of the W-D code. It was shown that TX Cnc is an …
Aims. The aim is to derive accurate stellar distances and extinctions for young stars of our survey in the Galactic anticenter direction using the Strömgren photometric system. This will allow a detailed mapping of the stellar density and absorption toward the Perseus arm. Methods. We developed a new method for deriving physical parameters from Strömgren photometry and also implemented and tested it. This is a model-based method that uses the most recent available stellar atmospheric models and evolutionary tracks to interpolate in a 3D grid of the unreddened indexes [m1], [c1] and Hbeta. Dist…
We present stellar variability towards the young open cluster NGC\,6823. Time series $V$- and $I$-band CCD photometry led to identification and characterization of 88 variable stars, of which only 14 have been previously recognized. We ascertain the membership of each variable with optical $UBVI$ and infrared photometry, and with Gaia EDR3 parallax and proper motion data. Seventy two variable stars are found to be cluster members, of which 25 are main sequence stars and 48 are pre-main-sequence stars. The probable cluster members collectively suggest an isochrone age of the cluster to be about…
Although all-sky surveys have led to the discovery of dozens of young planets, little is known about their atmospheres. Here, we present multi-wavelength transit data for the super Neptune-sized exoplanet, K2-33b -- the youngest (~10 Myr) transiting exoplanet to-date. We combined photometric observations of K2-33 covering a total of 33 transits spanning >2 years, taken from K2, MEarth, Hubble, and Spitzer. The transit photometry spanned from the optical to the near-infrared (0.6-4.5$μ$m), enabling us to construct a transmission spectrum of the planet. We find that the optical transit depths ar…
We report the discovery of a large amplitude outburst from the young star HBC 722 (LkHA 188 G4) located in the region of NGC 7000/IC 5070. On the basis of photometric and spectroscopic observations, we argue that this outburst is of the FU Orionis type. We gathered photometric and spectroscopic observations of the object both in the pre-outburst state and during a phase of increase in its brightness. The photometric BVRI data (Johnson-Cousins system) that we present were collected from April 2009 to September 2010. To facilitate transformation from instrumental measurements to the standard sys…
We present a photometric $J$-band variability study of GU Psc b, a T3.5 co-moving planetary-mass companion (9-13$M_{\rm{Jup}}$) to a young ($\sim$150 Myr) M3 member of the AB Doradus Moving Group. The large separation between GU Psc b and its host star (42") provides a rare opportunity to study the photometric variability of a planetary-mass companion. The study presented here is based on observations obtained from 2013 to 2014 over three nights with durations of 5-6 hr each with the WIRCam imager at Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Photometric variability with a peak-to-peak amplitude of $4\pm…
We have analyzed OGLE-III photometry for stars in the SMC cluster NGC 299. Two eclipsing binaries and one intrinsic variable (most likely a Be star) are identified. Unlike other young SMC clusters, no low-amplitude pulsating variables are present.
We present results of a photometric study of the young southern open cluster Stock 14. This cluster is known to contain two eclipsing systems with presumed beta Cephei components, HD 101794 and HD 101838. We confirm variability due to pulsations and eclipses in both targets and announce the discovery of other variable stars in the observed field.
We investigate photometric variations due to stellar activity which induce systematic radial-velocity errors (so-called "jitter") for the four targets in the Hyades open cluster observed by the K2 mission (EPIC 210721261, EPIC 210923016, EPIC 247122957, and EPIC 247783757). Applying Gaussian process regressions to the K2 light curves and the near-infrared (NIR) light curves observed with the IRSF 1.4-m telescope, we derive the wavelength dependences of the photometric signals due to stellar activity. To estimate the temporal variations in the photometric variability amplitudes between the two …
Results from new BVRI photometric observations of the pre-MS stars V521 Cyg and FHO 27 collected during the period from February 2015 to July 2019 are presented. These stars are embedded in the LDN 935, dubbed "The Gulf of Mexico" in the active star-forming complex NGC 7000/IC 5070. Previous studies revealed them as variables with large amplitude brightness variations. Our new observations show that the stars continue to exhibit strong photometric variability and fading events in the brightness. On the basis of the new data received and the data available in the literature, we were able to spe…
Young brown dwarfs are analogs to giant exoplanets, as they share effective temperatures, near-infrared colors, and surface gravities. Thus, the detailed characterization of young brown dwarfs might shed light on the study of giant exoplanets, that we are currently unable to observe with sufficient signal-to-noise to allow precise characterization of their atmospheres. 2MASS J22081363+2921215 is a young L3 brown dwarf, member of the beta-Pictoris young moving group (23 +/-3 Myr), that shares its effective temperature and mass with the beta Pictoris b giant exoplanet. We performed a ~2.5 hr spe…
In order to better understand the role of high-mass stellar feedback in regulating star formation in giant molecular clouds, we carried out a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Treasury Program "Measuring Young Stars in Space and Time" (MYSST) targeting the star-forming complex N44 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Using the F555W and F814W broadband filters of both the ACS and WFC3/UVIS, we built a photometric catalog of 461,684 stars down to $m_\mathrm{F555W} \simeq 29$ mag and $m_\mathrm{F814W} \simeq 28$ mag, corresponding to the magnitude of an unreddened 1 Myr pre-main-sequence star of $\ap…
Photometric data from the Xuyi Schmidt Telescope Photometric Survey of the Galactic Anticentre (XSTPS-GAC) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) are used to derive the global structure parameters of the smooth components of the Milky Way. The data, which cover nearly 11,000 deg$^2$ sky area and the full range of Galactic latitude, allow us to construct a globally representative Galactic model. The number density distribution of Galactic halo stars is fitted with an oblate spheroid that decays by power law. The best-fit yields an axis ratio and a power law index $κ=0.65$ and $p=2.79$, respect…
Young stellar associations hold a star formation record that can persist for millions of years, revealing the progression of star formation long after the dispersal of the natal cloud. To identify nearby young stellar populations that trace this progression, we have designed a comprehensive framework for the identification of young stars, and use it to identify $\sim$3$\times 10^4$ candidate young stars within a distance of 333 pc using Gaia DR2. Applying the HDBSCAN clustering algorithm to this sample, we identify 27 top-level groups, nearly half of which have little to no presence in previou…
Determination of the explosion type of supernova remnants (SNRs) can be challenging, as SNRs are hundreds to thousands of years old and supernovae (SNe) are classified based on spectral properties days after explosion. Previous studies of thermal X-ray emission from Milky Way and Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) SNRs have shown that Type Ia and core-collapse (CC) SNRs have statistically different symmetries, and thus these sources can be typed based on their X-ray morphologies. In this paper, we extend the same technique, a multipole expansion technique using power ratios, to infrared (IR) images …
The Young Exoplanet Transit Initiative (YETI) is a project focused on the photometric monitoring of stellar open clusters in order to find new young transiting exoplanets, eclipsing binaries and study other variability phenomena. Here, we present the status of the initiative and plans for future photometric campaigns of three open clusters younger than 50 Myr: NGC 869, NGC 884 and IC 4665, by using the world-wide one meter-class telescope network. Based on the experience gained by several astronomical observatories included in this network, dedicated numerical algorithms and recent results obt…
Young stars interact with their accretion disk through their strong magnetosphere. We investigate the magnetospheric accretion process in the young stellar system DoAr 44. We monitored the system over several rotational cycles, combining high-resolution optical and near-IR spectropolarimetry with long-baseline near-IR interferometry and multicolor photometry. DoAr 44 is a young 1.2 solar mass star, moderately accreting from its disk, and seen at a low inclination. We derive a rotational period of 2.96 d from the system's light curve. Several optical and near-IR line profiles probing the accret…

Space photometric time series of the most massive members of the young open cluster NGC 2264 allow us to study their different sources of variability down to the millimagnitude level and permits a search for Slowly Pulsating B (SPB) type pulsation among objects that are only a few million years old. Our goal is to conduct a homogeneous study of young B type stars in the cluster NGC 2264 using photometric time series from space in combination with high-resolution spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry obtained from the ground. The latter will be presented in a separate follow-up article. We perfor…
We conducted a long-term optical photometric and spectroscopic monitoring of the strongly variable, accreting young sun-like star [KOS94] HA11, associated with the dark cloud Lynds 1340, that exhibited large amplitude (5-6 magnitudes in the I_C band) brightness variations on 2-3 years timescales, flat spectral energy distribution (SED), and extremely strong (300 < EW/Angstrom < 900) H alpha emission. In this Letter we describe the basic properties of the star, derived from our observations between 1999 and 2011, and put into context the observed phenomena. The observed variations in the emissi…
Although the stellar and substellar populations have been studied in various young and old open clusters, additional studies in clusters in the age range from 5 to 100 Myr is crucial (e.g. to give more constrains on initial mass function variation with improved statistics). Among the open cluster candidates from recent studies, two clusters are best suited for photometric survey of very-low mass stars and brown dwarfs, considering their youth and relative proximity: Alessi 5 (t ~ 40 Myr, d ~ 400 pc) and beta Monocerotis (t ~ 9.1 Myr, d ~ 400 pc). For both clusters, we performed an optical and …
To improve our comprehension of the beta Cephei stars, we set up a photometric multi-site campaign on the open cluster NGC 884 (Chi Persei). Thirteen telescopes joined the 2005-2007 campaign which resulted in almost 78000 CCD frames. We present an up-to-date status of the analysis of these data, in which several interesting oscillating stars are pointed out. We end with the future prospects.

We present a UBV I and H alpha photometric study of the young open cluster NGC 1893 in the H II region W8 (IC 410 or Sh 2-236). A total of 65 early-type members are selected from photometric diagrams. A mean reddening of the stars is <E(B-V)> = 0.563 +/- 0.083 mag. The published photometric data in the near- and mid-infrared passbands are used to test the reddening law toward the cluster, and we confirm that the reddening law is normal (R_V = 3.1). Zero-age main sequence fitting gives a distance modulus of V_0 - M_V = 12.7 +/- 0.2 mag, equivalent to 3.5 +/- 0.3 kpc. From H alpha photometry 125…
The past two decades have seen dramatic progress in our knowledge of the population of young stars of age $< 200\,$Myr that lie within $150\,$pc of the Sun. These nearby, young stars, most of which are found in loose, comoving groups, provide the opportunity to explore (among many other things) the dissolution of stellar clusters and their diffusion into the field star population. Here, we exploit the combination of astrometric and photometric data from {\it Gaia} and photometric data from GALEX (UV) and 2MASS (near-IR) in an attempt to identify additional nearby, young, late-type stars. Speci…
We present a study of 323 photometrically variable young stellar objects that are likely members of the North America and Pelican (NAP) nebulae star forming region. To do so, we utilize over two years of data in the $g$ and $r$ photometric bands from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). We first investigate periodic variability, finding 46 objects ($\sim$15\% of the sample) with significant periods that phase well, and can be attributed to stellar rotation. We then use the quasi-periodicity (Q) and flux asymmetry (M) variability metrics to assign morphological classifications to the remaining …
We present follow-up photometric and spectroscopic observations, and subsequent analysis of Gaia20eae. This source triggered photometric alerts during 2020 after showing a $\sim$3 mag increase in its brightness. Its Gaia Alert light curve showed the shape of a typical eruptive young star. We carried out observations to confirm Gaia20eae as an eruptive young star and classify it. Its pre-outburst spectral energy distribution shows that Gaia20eae is a moderately embedded Class II object with $L_\mathrm{bol} = 7.22$ L$_\odot$. The color-color and color-magnitude diagrams indicate that the evoluti…
Young open clusters are ideal laboratories to understand star formation process. We present deep UBV I and Halpha photometry for the young open cluster IC 1590 in the center of the H II region NGC 281. Early-type members are selected from UBV photometric diagrams, and low-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) members are identified by using Halpha photometry. In addition, the published X-ray source list and Gaia astrometric data are also used to isolate probable members. A total of 408 stars are selected as members. The mean reddening obtained from early-type members is <E(B-V) = 0.40 +/- 0.06 (s.d.). …
