We study the effect of additive noise to the inversion of FIOs associated to a diffeomorphic canonical relation. We use the microlocal defect measures to measure the power spectrum of the noise and analyze how that power spectrum is transformed under the inversion. In particular, we compute the standard deviation of the noise added to the inversion as a function of the standard deviation of the noise added to the data. As an example, we study the Radon transform in the plane in parallel and fan-beam coordinates, and present numerical examples.
This paper is concerned with the electromagnetic inverse scattering problem that aims to determine the location and shape of anisotropic scatterers from far field data (at a fixed frequency). We study the orthogonality sampling method which is a simple, fast and robust imaging method for solving the electromagnetic inverse shape problem. We first provide a theoretical foundation for the sampling method and a resolution analysis of its imaging functional. We then establish an equivalent relation between the orthogonality sampling method and direct sampling method as well as resolution analysis …
Inverse scattering problems have many important applications. In this paper, given limited aperture data, we propose a Bayesian method for the inverse acoustic scattering to reconstruct the shape of an obstacle. The inverse problem is formulated as a statistical model using the Baye's formula. The well-posedness is proved in the sense of the Hellinger metric. The extended sampling method is modified to provide the initial guess of the target location, which is critical to the fast convergence of the MCMC algorithm. An extensive numerical study is presented to illustrate the performance of the …
We study sampling of Fourier Integral Operators $A$ at rates $sh$ with $s$ fixed and $h$ a small parameter. We show that the Nyquist sampling limit of $Af$ and $f$ are related by the canonical relation of $A$ using semiclassical analysis. We apply this analysis to the Radon transform in the parallel and the fan-beam coordinates. We explain and illustrate the optimal sampling rates for $Af$, the aliasing artifacts, and the effect of averaging (blurring) the data $Af$. We prove a Weyl type of estimate on the minimal number of sampling points to recover $f$ stably in terms of the volume of its se…

A new sampling method for inverse scattering problems is proposed to process far field data of one incident wave. As the linear sampling method, the method sets up ill-posed integral equations and uses the (approximate) solutions to reconstruct the target. In contrast, the kernels of the associated integral operators are the far field patterns of sound soft balls. The measured data is moved to right hand sides of the equations, which gives the method the ability to process limit aperture data. Furthermore, a multilevel technique is employed to improve the reconstruction. Numerical examples sho…
Consider the two-dimensional inverse elastic wave scattering by an infinite rough surface with a Dirichlet boundary condition. A non-interative sampling technique is proposed for detecting the rough surface by taking elastic wave measurements on a bounded line segment above the surface, based on reconstructing a modified near-field equation associated with a special surface, which generalized our pervious work for the Helmholtz equation (SIAM J. IMAGING. SCI. 10(3)(2017), 1579-1602) to the Navier equation. Several numerical examples are carried out to illustrate the effectiveness of the invers…
We introduce the sparse direct sampling method (DSM) to estimate properties of a region from signals that probe the region. We demonstrate the sparse-DSM on two separate problems: estimating both the angle-of-arrival of a radio wave impinging on an array and the location and shape of an inhomogeneity from scattered acoustic waves. The sparse-DSM is qualitative in nature, so it does not require the simulation of a forward problem to solve the inverse problem. The method generalizes of two older qualitative methods, one which has low-resolution reconstructions but uses few measurements and one w…
We consider the inverse elastic scattering problems using the far field data due to one incident plane wave. A simple method is proposed to reconstruct the location and size of the obstacle using different components of the far field pattern. The method sets up linear ill-posed integral equations for sampling points in the domain of interrogation and uses the (approximate) solutions to compute indicators. Using the far field patterns of rigid disks as the kernels of the integral equations and moving the measured data to the right hand side, the method has the ability to process limited apertur…
This paper is concerned with the inverse problem of time-harmonic acoustic scattering by an unbounded, locally rough interface which is assumed to be a local perturbation of a plane. The purpose of this paper is to recover the local perturbation of the interface from the near-field measurement given on a straight line segment with a finite distance above the interface and generated by point sources. Precisely, we propose a novel version of the linear sampling method to recover the location and shape of the local perturbation of the interface numerically. Our method is based on a modified near-…
The inverse acoustic scattering problems using multi-frequency backscattering far field patterns at isolated directions are studied. The underlying object could be point like scatterers, small scatterers, extended inhomogeneities and obstacles. A fast and robust direct sampling method is proposed for location and shape reconstruction of the underlying objects. To our best knowledge, this is the first numerical method for inverse obstacle/medium scattering problems with the multi-frequency sparse backscattering data. Some approximate uniqueness results have also been showed based on the weak sc…
Similar to the obstacle or medium scattering problems, an important property of the phaseless far field patterns for source scattering problems is the translation invariance. Thus it is impossible to reconstruct the location of the underlying sources. Furthermore, the phaseless far field pattern is also invariant if the source is multiplied by any complex number with modulus one. Therefore, the source can not be uniquely determined, even the multifrequency phaseless far field patterns are considered. By adding a reference point source into the model, we propose a simple and stable phase retrie…
This paper investigates the inverse scattering problems using sampling methods with near field measurements. The near field measurements appear in two classical inverse scattering problems: the inverse scattering for obstacles and the interior inverse scattering for cavities. We propose modified sampling methods to treat these two classical problems using near field measurements without making any asymptotic assumptions on the distance between the measurement surface and the scatterers. We provide theoretical justifications based on the factorization of the near field operator in both symmetri…
The paper formulates Bayesian inverse problems for inference in a topological measure space given noisy observations. Conditions for the validity of the Bayes formula and the well-posedness of the posterior measure are studied. The abstract theory is then applied to Burgers and Hamilton-Jacobi equations on a semi-infinite time interval with forcing functions which are white noise in time. Inference is made on the white noise forcing, assuming the Wiener measure as the prior.
This paper investigates the inverse source problem with a single propagating mode at multiple frequencies in an acoustic waveguide. The goal is to provide both theoretical justifications and efficient algorithms for imaging extended sources using the sampling methods. In contrast to the existing far/near field operator based on the integral over the space variable in the sampling methods, a multi-frequency far-field operator is introduced based on the integral over the frequency variable. This far-field operator is defined in a way to incorporate the possibly non-linear dispersion relation, a …
Partial differential equations are central to describing many physical phenomena. In many applications these phenomena are observed through a sensor network, with the aim of inferring their underlying properties. Leveraging from certain results in sampling and approximation theory, we present a new framework for solving a class of inverse source problems for physical fields governed by linear partial differential equations. Specifically, we demonstrate that the unknown field sources can be recovered from a sequence of, so called, generalised measurements by using multidimensional frequency est…
