Research into the task of re-identification (ReID) is picking up momentum in computer vision for its many use cases and zero-shot learning nature. This paper proposes a computationally efficient fine-grained ReID model, FGReID, which is among the first models to unify image and video ReID while keeping the number of training parameters minimal. FGReID takes advantage of video-based pre-training and spatial feature attention to improve performance on both video and image ReID tasks. FGReID achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) on MARS, iLIDS-VID, and PRID-2011 video person ReID benchmarks. Eliminating temporal pooling yields an image ReID model that surpasses SOTA on CUHK01 and Market1501 image person ReID benchmarks. The FGReID achieves near SOTA performance on the vehicle ReID dataset VeRi as well, demonstrating its ability to generalize. Additionally we do an ablation study analyzing the key features influencing model performance on ReID tasks. Finally, we discuss the moral dilemmas related to ReID tasks, including the potential for misuse. Fine-Grained Visual Categorization (FGVC) has achieved significant progress recently. However, the number of fine-grained species could be huge and dynamically increasing in real scenarios, making it difficult to recognize unseen objects under the current FGVC framework. This raises an open issue to perform large-scale fine-grained identification without a complete training set. Aiming to conquer this issue, we propose a retrieval task named One-Shot Fine-Grained Instance Retrieval (OSFGIR). "One-Shot" denotes the ability of identifying unseen objects through a fine-grained retrieval task assi…
Large-scale fine-grained image retrieval has two main problems. First, low dimensional feature embedding can fasten the retrieval process but bring accuracy reduce due to overlooking the feature of significant attention regions of images in fine-grained datasets. Second, fine-grained images lead to the same category query hash codes mapping into the different cluster in database hash latent space. To handle these two issues, we propose a feature consistency driven attention erasing network (FCAENet) for fine-grained image retrieval. For the first issue, we propose an adaptive augmentation modu…

Fine-grained visual recognition is challenging because it highly relies on the modeling of various semantic parts and fine-grained feature learning. Bilinear pooling based models have been shown to be effective at fine-grained recognition, while most previous approaches neglect the fact that inter-layer part feature interaction and fine-grained feature learning are mutually correlated and can reinforce each other. In this paper, we present a novel model to address these issues. First, a cross-layer bilinear pooling approach is proposed to capture the inter-layer part feature relations, which r…
A video dataset that is designed to study fine-grained categorisation of pedestrians is introduced. Pedestrians were recorded "in-the-wild" from a moving vehicle. Annotations include bounding boxes, tracks, 14 keypoints with occlusion information and the fine-grained categories of age (5 classes), sex (2 classes), weight (3 classes) and clothing style (4 classes). There are a total of 27,454 bounding box and pose labels across 4222 tracks. This dataset is designed to train and test algorithms for fine-grained categorisation of people, it is also useful for benchmarking tracking, detection and …
One-shot fine-grained visual recognition often suffers from the problem of training data scarcity for new fine-grained classes. To alleviate this problem, an off-the-shelf image generator can be applied to synthesize additional training images, but these synthesized images are often not helpful for actually improving the accuracy of one-shot fine-grained recognition. This paper proposes a meta-learning framework to combine generated images with original images, so that the resulting ``hybrid'' training images can improve one-shot learning. Specifically, the generic image generator is updated b…
Successful fine-grained image classification methods learn subtle details between visually similar (sub-)classes, but the problem becomes significantly more challenging if the details are missing due to low resolution. Encouraged by the recent success of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures in image classification, we propose a novel resolution-aware deep model which combines convolutional image super-resolution and convolutional fine-grained classification into a single model in an end-to-end manner. The recognition ability of human beings is developed in a progressive way. Usually, children learn to discriminate various objects from coarse to fine-grained with limited supervision. Inspired by this learning process, we propose a simple yet effective model for the Few-Shot Fine-Grained (FSFG) recognition, which tries to tackle the challenging fine-grained recognition task using meta-learning. The proposed method, named Pairwise Alignment Bilinear Network (PABN), is an end-to-end deep neural network. Unlike traditional deep bilinear networks for fine-grained classification, which adopt the s…
Multi-grained features extracted from convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have demonstrated their strong discrimination ability in supervised person re-identification (Re-ID) tasks. Inspired by them, this work investigates the way of extracting multi-grained features from a pure transformer network to address the unsupervised Re-ID problem that is label-free but much more challenging. To this end, we build a dual-branch network architecture based upon a modified Vision Transformer (ViT). The local tokens output in each branch are reshaped and then uniformly partitioned into multiple stripes t…

Naturally, fine-grained recognition, e.g., vehicle identification or bird classification, has specific hierarchical labels, where fine categories are always harder to be classified than coarse categories. However, most of the recent deep learning based methods neglect the semantic structure of fine-grained objects and do not take advantage of the traditional fine-grained recognition techniques (e.g. coarse-to-fine classification). In this paper, we propose a novel framework with a two-branch network (coarse branch and fine branch), i.e., semantic bilinear pooling, for fine-grained recognition …
Current approaches for fine-grained recognition do the following: First, recruit experts to annotate a dataset of images, optionally also collecting more structured data in the form of part annotations and bounding boxes. Second, train a model utilizing this data. Toward the goal of solving fine-grained recognition, we introduce an alternative approach, leveraging free, noisy data from the web and simple, generic methods of recognition. This approach has benefits in both performance and scalability. We demonstrate its efficacy on four fine-grained datasets, greatly exceeding existing state of …
Fine-grained image recognition is a challenging computer vision problem, due to the small inter-class variations caused by highly similar subordinate categories, and the large intra-class variations in poses, scales and rotations. In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end Mask-CNN model without the fully connected layers for fine-grained recognition. Based on the part annotations of fine-grained images, the proposed model consists of a fully convolutional network to both locate the discriminative parts (e.g., head and torso), and more importantly generate object/part masks for selecting use…
Deep convolutional neural network models pre-trained for the ImageNet classification task have been successfully adopted to tasks in other domains, such as texture description and object proposal generation, but these tasks require annotations for images in the new domain. In this paper, we focus on a novel and challenging task in the pure unsupervised setting: fine-grained image retrieval. Even with image labels, fine-grained images are difficult to classify, let alone the unsupervised retrieval task. We propose the Selective Convolutional Descriptor Aggregation (SCDA) method. SCDA firstly lo…
Fine-grained recognition is challenging due to its subtle local inter-class differences versus large intra-class variations such as poses. A key to address this problem is to localize discriminative parts to extract pose-invariant features. However, ground-truth part annotations can be expensive to acquire. Moreover, it is hard to define parts for many fine-grained classes. This work introduces Fully Convolutional Attention Networks (FCANs), a reinforcement learning framework to optimally glimpse local discriminative regions adaptive to different fine-grained domains. One-shot fine-grained visual recognition often suffers from the problem of having few training examples for new fine-grained classes. To alleviate this problem, off-the-shelf image generation techniques based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) can potentially create additional training images. In this paper, we propose a meta-learning framework to combine generated images with original images, so that the resulting "hybrid" training images improve one-shot …
Pose variation and subtle differences in appearance are key challenges to fine-grained classification. While deep networks have markedly improved general recognition, many approaches to fine-grained recognition rely on anchoring networks to parts for better accuracy. Identifying parts to find correspondence discounts pose variation so that features can be tuned to appearance. To this end previous methods have examined how to find parts and extract pose-normalized features. These methods have generally separated fine-grained recognition into stages which first localize parts using hand-engineer…
Fine-grained image hashing is a challenging problem due to the difficulties of discriminative region localization and hash code generation. Most existing deep hashing approaches solve the two tasks independently. While these two tasks are correlated and can reinforce each other. In this paper, we propose a deep fine-grained hashing to simultaneously localize the discriminative regions and generate the efficient binary codes. The proposed approach consists of a region localization module and a hash coding module. The region localization module aims to provide informative regions to the hash cod…

Fine-grained image classification, which aims to distinguish images with subtle distinctions, is a challenging task due to two main issues: lack of sufficient training data for every class and difficulty in learning discriminative features for representation. In this paper, to address the two issues, we propose a two-phase framework for recognizing images from unseen fine-grained classes, i.e. zero-shot fine-grained classification. In the first feature learning phase, we finetune deep convolutional neural networks using hierarchical semantic structure among fine-grained classes to extract disc…
Collecting fine-grained labels usually requires expert-level domain knowledge and is prohibitive to scale up. In this paper, we propose Attribute Mix, a data augmentation strategy at attribute level to expand the fine-grained samples. The principle lies in that attribute features are shared among fine-grained sub-categories, and can be seamlessly transferred among images. Toward this goal, we propose an automatic attribute mining approach to discover attributes that belong to the same super-category, and Attribute Mix is operated by mixing semantically meaningful attribute features from two im…
Recent algorithms in convolutional neural networks (CNN) considerably advance the fine-grained image classification, which aims to differentiate subtle differences among subordinate classes. However, previous studies have rarely focused on learning a fined-grained and structured feature representation that is able to locate similar images at different levels of relevance, e.g., discovering cars from the same make or the same model, both of which require high precision. In this paper, we propose two main contributions to tackle this problem. 1) A multi-task learning framework is designed to eff…

Occlusion is still a severe problem in the video-based Re-IDentification (Re-ID) task, which has a great impact on the success rate. The attention mechanism has been proved to be helpful in solving the occlusion problem by a large number of existing methods. However, their attention mechanisms still lack the capability to extract sufficient discriminative information into the final representations from the videos. The single attention module scheme employed by existing methods cannot exploit multi-scale spatial cues, and the attention of the single module will be dispersed by multiple salient …
Few-shot, fine-grained classification requires a model to learn subtle, fine-grained distinctions between different classes (e.g., birds) based on a few images alone. This requires a remarkable degree of invariance to pose, articulation and background. A solution is to use pose-normalized representations: first localize semantic parts in each image, and then describe images by characterizing the appearance of each part. While such representations are out of favor for fully supervised classification, we show that they are extremely effective for few-shot fine-grained classification. With a mini…

Instead, inference methods with robustness to outliers, yield state-of-the-art for keypoint localization. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our accurate keypoint localization and visibility prediction on the fine-grained bird reco…
In this work, we present a novel mask guided attention (MGA) method for fine-grained patchy image classification. The key challenge of fine-grained patchy image classification lies in two folds, ultra-fine-grained inter-category variances among objects and very few data available for training. This motivates us to consider employing more useful supervision signal to train a discriminative model within limited training samples. Specifically, the proposed MGA integrates a pre-trained semantic segmentation model that produces auxiliary supervision signal, i.e., patchy attention mask, enabling a d…
Low resolution fine-grained classification has widespread applicability for applications where data is captured at a distance such as surveillance and mobile photography. While fine-grained classification with high resolution images has received significant attention, limited attention has been given to low resolution images. These images suffer from the inherent challenge of limited information content and the absence of fine details useful for sub-category classification. This results in low inter-class variations across samples of visually similar classes. In order to address these challeng…

A key challenge in fine-grained recognition is how to find and represent discriminative local regions. Recent attention models are capable of learning discriminative region localizers only from category labels with reinforcement learning. However, not utilizing any explicit part information, they are not able to accurately find multiple distinctive regions. In this work, we introduce an attribute-guided attention localization scheme where the local region localizers are learned under the guidance of part attribute descriptions. Fine-grained image analysis (FGIA) is a longstanding and fundamental problem in computer vision and pattern recognition, and underpins a diverse set of real-world applications. The task of FGIA targets analyzing visual objects from subordinate categories, e.g., species of birds or models of cars. Capitalizing on advances in deep learning, in recent years we have witnessed remarkable progress in deep learning powered FGIA. In this paper we present a systematic survey of …
Visual classification can be divided into coarse-grained and fine-grained classification. Coarse-grained classification represents categories with a large degree of dissimilarity, such as the classification of cats and dogs, while fine-grained classification represents classifications with a large degree of similarity, such as cat species, bird species, and the makes or models of vehicles. Unlike coarse-grained visual classification, fine-grained visual classification often requires professional experts to label data, which makes data more expensive.
