The interactions between copropagating ring-Airy beams in a (2+1)-dimensional Kerr medium are numerically investigated for the first time. It is shown that two overlapping ring-Airy beams in such a medium produce controllable regions of very low intensity during propagation, the geometry of which can be manipulated by the tuning of initial beam parameters. This may prove useful for future optical tweezing applications in the nonlinear regime.
In this paper, we describe analytically the propagation of Airy-type pulses truncated by a finite-time aperture when second and third order dispersion effects are considered. The mathematical method presented here, based on the superposition of exponentially truncated Airy pulses, is very effective, allowing us to avoid the use of time-consuming numerical simulations. We analyze the behavior of the time truncated Ideal-Airy pulse and also the interesting case of a time truncated Airy pulse with a "defect" in its initial profile, which reveals the self-healing property of this kind of pulse sol…
We investigate on the nonlinear dynamics of Airy beams in a regime where nonlinear losses due to multi-photon absorption are significant. We identify the nonlinear Airy beam (NAB) that preserves the amplitude of the inward Hänkel component as an attractor of the dynamics. This attractor governs also the dynamics of finite-power (apodized) Airy beams, irrespective of the location of the entrance plane in the medium with respect to the Airy waist plane. A soft (linear) input long before the waist, however, strongly speeds up NAB formation and its persistence as a quasi-stationary beam in compari…
We investigate Airy-soliton interactions in self-defocusing media with PT potentials in one transverse dimension. We discuss different potentials in which the interacting beams with different phases are launched into the media at different separation distances. During interactions, there exist a primary collision region and a relaxation region accompanied by continuous interaction with the dispersed Airy tail. In the relaxation region, the beams exist soliton-like and breathers-like propagation. The beam width and mean power are influenced by initial separation, phase shift and modulation dept…
We study the interaction of a co-propagating finite energy Airy pulse and a soliton in a Kerr medium under third order dispersion. It is observed that a strong radiation appears when selfaccelerating Airy pulse collides with a delayed soliton in time domain. We confirm both analytically and numerically that this radiation can only be initiated in the environment of third order dispersion (TOD). The radiation frequency is red or blue shifted depending on the numeric sign of TOD parameter. We adopt a simple Si-based waveguide to validate the normalised parameter that we use for the analysis. We …
In this paper we perform a fusion between two important theoretical methodologies, one related to the Frozen Wave beams, which are non-diffracting beams whose longitudinal intensity pattern can be chosen a priori in an medium (absorbing or not), and the other related to the Airy-Type pulses, which are pulses resistant to dispersion effects in dispersive materials. As a result, a new method emerges, capable of providing vortex pulses resistant to three concomitant effects, i.e.: diffraction, dispersion and attenuation; while concurrently the spatial variation of the wave intensity along its axi…
We address the dynamics of two-dimensional (2D) truncated Airy waves and three-component solitons in the system of two fundamental-frequency and second-harmonic fields, coupled by quadratic (chi^(2)) terms. The system models second-harmonic-generating optical media and atomic-molecular mixtures in Bose-Einstein condensates. In addition to stable solitons, the system maintains truncated-Airy-waves states in either one of the fundamental-frequency components, represented by exact solutions, which are stable, unlike the Airy waves in the degenerate (two-component) chi^(2) system. It is also possi…
We analytically calculate the transverse energy fluxes that would be respectively induced in high-power Airy beams by the Kerr self-focusing and the Airy profile itself if they were the only active process. In experimental condition representative of laser filamentation experiments of high-power ultrashort laser pulses in air and condensed media, the Kerr lens induces transverse energy fluxes much larger than the Airy "prism" at the main peak. As a consequence, the curved plasma channels in Airy beams are not only a plasma spark on a curved focus, but indeed self-guided filaments, and their cu…
We investigate interactions by means of direct numerical simulations between two finite Airy-Gaussian (AiG) beams in different media with the defected photonic lattices in one transverse dimension. We discuss different lattice structures in which the beams with different intensities and phases are launched into the medium, but accelerate in opposite directions. During interactions we see the interference fringe, breathers and soliton pairs generated that are not accelerating. In the linear media, the initial deflection direction of the accelerated beams is changed by adjusting the phase shift …
We investigate numerically interactions between two in-phase or out-of-phase Airy beams and nonlinear accelerating beams in Kerr and saturable nonlinear media in one transverse dimension. We discuss different cases in which the beams with different intensities are launched into the medium, but accelerate in opposite directions. Since both the Airy beams and nonlinear accelerating beams possess infinite oscillating tails, we discuss interactions between truncated beams, with finite energies. During interactions we see solitons and soliton pairs generated that are not accelerating. In general, t…
We present a class of diffraction-free partially coherent beams each member of which is comprised of a finite power, non-accelerating Airy bump residing on a statistically homogeneous, Gaussian-correlated background. We examine free-space propagation of soft apertured realizations of the proposed beams and show that their evolution is governed by two spatial scales: the coherence width of the background and aperture size. A relative magnitude of these factors determines the practical range of propagation distances over which the novel beams can withstand diffraction. The proposed beams can fin…
We propose a new method to image fluorescent objects through turbid media base on Airy beam scanning. This is achieved by using the non-diffractive nature of Airy beams, namely their ability to maintain their shape while penetrating through a highly scattering medium. We show, that our technique can image fluorescent objects immersed in turbid media with higher resolution and signal to noise than confocal imaging. As proof-of-principle, we demonstrate imaging of 1$μ$m sized fluorescent beads through a dense suspension of yeast cells with an attenuation coefficient of 51cm$^{-1}$ at a depth of …
The dynamics of 3D Airy-vortex wave packets is studied under the action of strong self-focusing Kerr nonlinearity. Emissions of nonlinear 3D waves out of the main wave packets with the topological charges were demonstrated. Due to the conservation of the total angular momentum, charges of the emitted waves are equal to those carried by the parental light structure. The rapid collapse imposes a severe limitation on the propagation of multidimensional waves in Kerr media. However, the structure of the Airy beam carrier allows the coupling of light from the leading, most intense peak into neighbo…
The propagation dynamics of two-dimensional (2D) ring-Airy beams is studied in the framework of the fractional Schrödinger equation, which includes saturable or cubic self-focusing or defocusing nonlinearity and Lévy index ((LI) alias for the fractionality) taking values $1\leqα\leq 2$. The model applies to light propagation in a chain of optical cavities emulating fractional diffraction. Management is included by making the diffraction and/or nonlinearity coefficients periodic functions of the propagation distance, $ζ$. The management format with the nonlinearity coefficient decaying as $1/ζ$…
We investigate numerically the interactions of two in-phase and out-of-phase Airy beams and nonlinear accelerating beams in Kerr and saturable nonlinear media, in one transverse dimension. We find that bound and unbound soliton pairs, as well as single solitons, can form in such interactions. If the interval between two incident beams is large relative to the width of their first lobes, the generated soliton pairs just propagate individually and do not interact. However, if the interval is comparable to the widths of the maximum lobes, the pairs interact and display varied behavior. In the in-…
We report a new form of compensating accelerating beam generated by amplitude modulation of the symmetric Airy beam (SAB) caustics with an exponential apodization mask. Our numerical study manifests that the compensating beam is with one main-lobe beam structure and can maintain the mean-intensity invariant both in the free space and loss media. Specially, the beam inherits the beamlets structure from the SAB and owns a novel damped oscillating propagation property. We also conduct a comparative study of its propagation property with that of the Airy beam theoretically. And by altering the sig…
In this paper we investigate the properties of self induced transparency (SIT) solitons, propagating in a $Λ$-type medium. It was found that the interaction between SIT solitons can lead to trapping with their phase preserved in the ground state coherence of the medium. These phases can be altered in a systematic way by the application of appropriate light fields, such as additional SIT solitons. Furthermore, multiple independent SIT solitons can be made to propagate as bi-solitons through their mutual interaction with a separate light field. Finally, we demonstrate that control of the SIT sol…
Several applications, such as optical tweezers and atom guiding, benefit from techniques that allow the engineering of optical fields' spatial profiles, in particular their longitudinal intensity patterns. In cylindrical coordinates, methods such as Frozen Waves allow an advanced control of beams' characteristics, but in Cartesian coordinates there is no analogous technique. Since Cartesian beams may also be useful for applications, we develop here a method to modulate on-demand the longitudinal intensity pattern of any (initially) unidimensional Cartesian beam with concentrated wavevector spe…
A statistical inference method is developed and tested for pairwise interacting systems whose degrees of freedom are continuous angular variables, such as planar spins in magnetic systems or wave phases in optics and acoustics. We investigate systems with both deterministic and quenched disordered couplings on two extreme topologies: complete and sparse graphs. To match further applications in optics also complex couplings and external fields are considered and general inference formulas are derived for real and imaginary parts of Hermitian coupling matrices from real and imaginary parts of co…
Using a variational approach, we obtain the self-focusing critical power for a single and for any number of interacting Laguerre-Gauss beams propagating in a Kerr nonlinear optical medium. As is known, the critical power for freely propagating higher-order modes is always greater than that of the fundamental Gaussian mode. Here, we generalize that result for an arbitrary incoherent superposition of Laguerre-Gauss beams, adding interactions between them. This leads to a vast and rich spectrum of self-focusing phenomena, which is absent in the single-beam case. Specifically, we find that interac…
We demonstrate experimentally the existence of three-wave resonant interaction solitary triplets in quadratic media. Stable velocity-locked bright-dark-bright spatial solitary triplets, determined by the balance between the energy exchange rates and the velocity mismatch between the interacting waves, are excited in a KTP crystal.
We study theoretically quantum states of a pair of photons interacting with a finite periodic array of two-level atoms in a waveguide. Our calculation reveals two-polariton eigenstates that have a highly irregular wave-function in real space. This indicates the Bethe ansatz breakdown and the onset of quantum chaos, in stark contrast to the conventional integrable problem of two interacting bosons in a box. We identify the long-range waveguide-mediated coupling between the atoms as the key ingredient of chaos and nonintegrability. Our results provide new insights in the interplay between order,…
We analyse van der Waals interactions between a pair of dielectrically anisotropic plane-layered media interacting across a dielectrically isotropic solvent medium. We develop a general formalism based on transfer matrices to investigate the van der Waals torque and force in the limit of weak birefringence and dielectric matching between the ordinary axes of the anisotropic layers and the solvent. We apply this formalism to study the following systems: (i) a pair of single anisotropic layers, (ii) a single anisotropic layer interacting with a multilayered slab consisting of alternating anisotr…
Intense light propagating in a nonlinear medium can generate an ensemble of interacting filaments of light, or spatial solitons. Using nematic liquid crystals, we demonstrate that they undergo a collective behavior typical of complex systems, including the formation of clusters and sound-like vibrations, as well as the reduction of the configurational entropy, controlled by the degree of nonlocality of the medium.
Two-dimensional molecular aggregate (2DMA), a thin sheet of strongly interacting dipole molecules self-assembled at close distance on an ordered lattice, is a fascinating fluorescent material. It is distinctively different from the single or colloidal dye molecules or quantum dots in most previous research. In this paper, we verify for the first time that when a 2DMA is placed at a nanometric distance from a metallic substrate, the strong and coherent interaction between the dipoles inside the 2DMA dominates its fluorescent decay at picosecond timescale. Our streak-camera lifetime measurement …
