Spoken Language Understanding infers semantic meaning directly from audio data, and thus promises to reduce error propagation and misunderstandings in end-user applications. However, publicly available SLU resources are limited. In this paper, we release SLURP, a new SLU package containing the following: (1) A new challenging dataset in English spanning 18 domains, which is substantially bigger and linguistically more diverse than existing datasets; (2) Competitive baselines based on state-of-the-art NLU and ASR systems; (3) A new transparent metric for entity labelling which enables a detailed error analysis for identifying potential areas of improvement. SLURP is available at https: //github.com/pswietojanski/slurp.
We present the MASSIVE dataset--Multilingual Amazon Slu resource package (SLURP) for Slot-filling, Intent classification, and Virtual assistant Evaluation. MASSIVE contains 1M realistic, parallel, labeled virtual assistant utterances spanning 51 languages, 18 domains, 60 intents, and 55 slots. MASSIVE was created by tasking professional translators to localize the English-only SLURP dataset into 50 typologically diverse languages from 29 genera. We also present modeling results on XLM-R and mT5, including exact match accuracy, intent classification accuracy, and slot-filling F1 score. We have …
End-to-end spoken language understanding (SLU) suffers from the long-tail word problem. This paper exploits contextual biasing, a technique to improve the speech recognition of rare words, in end-to-end SLU systems. Specifically, a tree-constrained pointer generator (TCPGen), a powerful and efficient biasing model component, is studied, which leverages a slot shortlist with corresponding entities to extract biasing lists. Meanwhile, to bias the SLU model output slot distribution, a slot probability biasing (SPB) mechanism is proposed to calculate a slot distribution from TCPGen. Experiments on…
Speech self-supervised models such as wav2vec 2.0 and HuBERT are making revolutionary progress in Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR). However, they have not been totally proven to produce better performance on tasks other than ASR. In this work, we explored partial fine-tuning and entire fine-tuning on wav2vec 2.0 and HuBERT pre-trained models for three non-ASR speech tasks: Speech Emotion Recognition, Speaker Verification and Spoken Language Understanding. With simple proposed downstream frameworks, the best scores reached 79.58% weighted accuracy on speaker-dependent setting and 73.01% weigh…
Spoken language understanding (SLU) systems extract both text transcripts and semantics associated with intents and slots from input speech utterances. SLU systems usually consist of (1) an automatic speech recognition (ASR) module, (2) an interface module that exposes relevant outputs from ASR, and (3) a natural language understanding (NLU) module. Interfaces in SLU systems carry information on text transcriptions or richer information like neural embeddings from ASR to NLU. In this paper, we study how interfaces affect joint-training for spoken language understanding. Most notably, we obtain…
End-to-end (E2E) models are becoming increasingly popular for spoken language understanding (SLU) systems and are beginning to achieve competitive performance to pipeline-based approaches. However, recent work has shown that these models struggle to generalize to new phrasings for the same intent indicating that models cannot understand the semantic content of the given utterance. In this work, we incorporated language models pre-trained on unlabeled text data inside E2E-SLU frameworks to build strong semantic representations. Incorporating both semantic and acoustic information can increase t…

Although Transformers have gained success in several speech processing tasks like spoken language understanding (SLU) and speech translation (ST), achieving online processing while keeping competitive performance is still essential for real-world interaction. In this paper, we take the first step on streaming SLU and simultaneous ST using a blockwise streaming Transformer, which is based on contextual block processing and blockwise synchronous beam search. Furthermore, we design an automatic speech recognition (ASR)-based intermediate loss regularization for the streaming SLU task to improve t…
Most End-to-End (E2E) SLU networks leverage the pre-trained ASR networks but still lack the capability to understand the semantics of utterances, crucial for the SLU task. To solve this, recently proposed studies use pre-trained NLU networks. However, it is not trivial to fully utilize both pre-trained networks; many solutions were proposed, such as Knowledge Distillation, cross-modal shared embedding, and network integration with Interface. We propose a simple and robust integration method for the E2E SLU network with novel Interface, Continuous Token Interface (CTI), the junctional represent…

The DISC project aims to (a) build an in-depth understanding of the state-of-the-art in spoken language dialogue systems (SLDSs) and components development and evaluation with the purpose of (b) developing a first best practice methodology in the field. The methodology will be accompanied by (c) a series of development and evaluation support tools. To the limited extent possible within the duration of the project, the draft versions of the methodology and the tools will be (d) tested by SLDS developers from industry and research, and will be (e) packaged to best suit their needs. In the first …
Despite recent progress in Natural Language Understanding (NLU), the creation of multilingual NLU systems remains a challenge. It is common to have NLU systems limited to a subset of languages due to lack of available data. They also often vary widely in performance. We launch a three-phase approach to address the limitations in NLU and help propel NLU technology to new heights. We release a 52 language dataset called the Multilingual Amazon SLU resource package (SLURP) for Slot-filling, Intent classification, and Virtual assistant Evaluation, or MASSIVE, in an effort to address parallel data …
