In open-domain question answering, questions are highly likely to be ambiguous because users may not know the scope of relevant topics when formulating them. Therefore, a system needs to find possible interpretations of the question, and predict one or multiple plausible answers. When multiple plausible answers are found, the system should rewrite the question for each answer to resolve the ambiguity. In this paper, we present a model that aggregates and combines evidence from multiple passages to adaptively predict a single answer or a set of question-answer pairs for ambiguous questions. In addition, we propose a novel round-trip prediction approach to iteratively generate additional interpretations that our model fails to find in the first pass, and then verify and filter out the incorrect question-answer pairs to arrive at the final disambiguated output. Our model, named Refuel, achieves a new state-of-the-art performance on the AmbigQA dataset, and shows competitive performance on NQ-Open and TriviaQA. The proposed round-trip prediction is a model-agnostic general approach for answering ambiguous open-domain questions, which improves our Refuel as well as several baseline models. We release source code for our models and experiments at https://github.com/amzn/refuel-open-domain-qa.
Estimating the quality of machine translation systems has been an ongoing challenge for researchers in this field. Many previous attempts at using round-trip translation as a measure of quality have failed, and there is much disagreement as to whether it can be a viable method of quality estimation. In this paper, we revisit round-trip translation, proposing a system which aims to solve the previous pitfalls found with the approach. Our method makes use of recent advances in language representation learning to more accurately gauge the similarity between the original and round-trip translated …
Quality estimation (QE) is the task of automatically evaluating the quality of translations without human-translated references. Calculating BLEU between the input sentence and round-trip translation (RTT) was once considered as a metric for QE, however, it was found to be a poor predictor of translation quality. Recently, various pre-trained language models have made breakthroughs in NLP tasks by providing semantically meaningful word and sentence embeddings. In this paper, we employ semantic embeddings to RTT-based QE. Our method achieves the highest correlations with human judgments, compar…
We investigate models that can generate arbitrary natural language text (e.g. all English sentences) from a bounded, convex and well-behaved control space. We call them universal vec2text models. Such models would allow making semantic decisions in the vector space (e.g. via reinforcement learning) while the natural language generation is handled by the vec2text model. We propose four desired properties: universality, diversity, fluency, and semantic structure, that such vec2text models should possess and we provide quantitative and qualitative methods to assess them. We implement a vec2text m…
Generating adversarial examples for Neural Machine Translation (NMT) with single Round-Trip Translation (RTT) has achieved promising results by releasing the meaning-preserving restriction. However, a potential pitfall for this approach is that we cannot decide whether the generated examples are adversarial to the target NMT model or the auxiliary backward one, as the reconstruction error through the RTT can be related to either. To remedy this problem, we propose a new criterion for NMT adversarial examples based on the Doubly Round-Trip Translation (DRTT). Specifically, apart from the source…
