Tidally dissolved globular clusters form thin stellar streams that preserve a historical record of their past evolution. We report a radial velocity dispersion of $2.3\pm0.3\,\textrm{km}\,\textrm{s}^{-1}$ in the GD-1 stellar stream using a sample of 43 spectroscopically confirmed members. The GD-1 velocity dispersion is constant over the surveyed $\approx15^\circ$ span of the stream. We also measured velocity dispersion in the spur adjacent to the main GD-1 stream, and found a similar value at the tip of the spur. Surprisingly, the region of the spur closer to the stream appears dynamically colder than the main stream. An unperturbed model of the GD-1 stream has a velocity dispersion of $\approx0.6\,\textrm{km}\,\textrm{s}^{-1}$, indicating that GD-1 has undergone dynamical heating. Stellar streams arising from globular clusters, which prior to their arrival in the Milky Way, orbited a dwarf galaxy with a cored density profile are expected to have experienced the amount of heating required to match the velocity dispersion observed in GD-1. This suggests that GD-1 has been accreted and that imprints of its original host galaxy, including the inner slope of its dark-matter halo, remain observable in the stream today.
Star streams in galactic halos are long, thin, unbound structures that will be disturbed by the thousands dark matter sub-halos that are predicted to be orbiting within the main halo. A sub-halo generally induces a localized wave in the stream which often evolves into a "z-fold" as an initially trailing innermost part rotates faster than an initially leading outermost part. The folding, which becomes increasingly complex with time, leads to an apparent velocity dispersion increase and thickening of the stream. We measure the equivalent velocity dispersion around the local mean in the simulatio…
We present new central stellar velocity dispersion measurements for 428 galaxies in the Palomar spectroscopic survey of bright, northern galaxies. Of these, 142 have no previously published measurements, most being relatively late-type systems with low velocity dispersions (< 100 km/s). We provide updates to a number of literature dispersions with large uncertainties. Our measurements are based on a direct pixel-fitting technique that can accommodate composite stellar populations by calculating an optimal linear combination of input stellar templates. The original Palomar survey data were take…
The cold dark matter picture predicts an abundance of substructure within the Galactic halo. However, most substructures host no stars and can only be detected indirectly. Stellar streams present a promising probe of this dark substructure. These streams arise from tidally stripped star clusters or dwarf galaxies, and their low dynamical temperature and negligible self-gravity give them a sharp memory of gravitational perturbations caused by passing dark substructures. For this reason, perturbed stellar streams have been the subject of substantial study. While previous studies have been largel…
We use the very high resolution, fully cosmological simulations from the Aquarius project, coupled to a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation, to study the phase-space distribution of halo stars in "solar neighbourhood"-like volumes. We find that this distribution is very rich in substructure in the form of stellar streams for all five stellar haloes we have analysed. These streams can be easily identified in velocity space, as well as in spaces of pseudo-conserved quantities such as E vs. Lz. In our best-resolved local volumes, the number of identified streams ranges from ~ 300 to 600, in…
An improved transformation of the full width at half maxima (FWHM) of the [O III] 5007 line in AGNs to the stellar velocity dispersion, sigma, of the host galaxy is given. This significantly reduces the systematic errors in using the [O III] FWHM as a proxy for sigma. AGN black hole masses, M, estimated using the Dibai single epoch spectrum method, are combined with the new estimates of sigma to give a revised AGN M-sigma relationship extending up to high masses. This shows that the masses of the most massive black holes are systematically higher than predicted by extrapolation of M \propto si…

It has been suggested that the central stellar velocity dispersion of galaxies can trace dark matter halo mass directly. We test this hypothesis using a complete spectroscopic sample of isolated galaxies surrounded by faint satellite galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12. We apply a friends-of-friends algorithm with projected linking length $ΔD < 100$ kpc and radial velocity linking length $ΔV < 1000$ km s$^{-1}$ to construct our sample. Our sample includes 2807 isolated galaxies with 3417 satellite galaxies at $0.01 < z < 0.14$. We divide the sample into two groups based …
We present a novel method to constrain the mass of ultra-light bosons as the dark matter using stellar streams formed by disrupting Globular Clusters in the Milky Way. The turbulent density field of Fuzzy Dark Matter (FDM) haloes results in perturbations and dynamical heating of thin streams. Using numerical simulations based on an effective model, we explore the magnitude of this phenomenon and show that this is observable for the range of axion masses $m_a$ that is interesting for alleviating the `small-scale problems' of $Λ$CDM. We derive an analytical model for the thickening of thin stell…
We perform a search for stellar streams around the Milky Way using the first three years of multi-band optical imaging data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We use DES data covering $\sim 5000$ sq. deg. to a depth of $g > 23.5$ with a relative photometric calibration uncertainty of $< 1 \%$. This data set yields unprecedented sensitivity to the stellar density field in the southern celestial hemisphere, enabling the detection of faint stellar streams to a heliocentric distance of $\sim 50$ kpc. We search for stellar streams using a matched-filter in color-magnitude space derived from a synth…
We have identified a low surface brightness stellar stream from visual inspection of SDSS imaging for the edge-on, spiral galaxy NGC5387. A blue overdensity was also identified in SDSS coincident with the stream intersection with the NGC5387 disk. The overdensity was also detected in the GALEX Deep Imaging Survey and found to contribute 38% of the total FUV integrated flux from NGC5387, which suggests that the region is actively forming stars. Deeper imaging was acquired with the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope (VATT) in the B, V, and R filters that confirmed the presence of both the ste…

There is increasing evidence that a substantial fraction of Milky Way satellite galaxies align in a rotationally-supported plane of satellites, a rare configuration in cosmological simulations of galaxy formation. It has been suggested that other Milky Way substructures (namely young halo globular clusters and stellar/gaseous streams) similarly tend to align with this plane, accordingly dubbed the Vast Polar Structure (VPOS). Using systemic proper motions inferred from Gaia data, we find that globular cluster orbital poles are not clustered in the VPOS direction, though the population with the…
We report tentative evidence for a cold stellar stream in the ultra-diffuse galaxy NGC1052-DF2. If confirmed, this stream (which we refer to as "The Maybe Stream") would be the first cold stellar stream detected outside of the Local Group. The candidate stream is very narrow and has an unusual and highly curved shape.
Tidal streams provide a powerful tool by means of which the matter distribution of the dark matter halos of their host galaxies can be studied. However, the analysis is not straightforward because streams do not delineate orbits, and for most streams, especially those in external galaxies, kinematic information is absent. We present a method wherein streams are fit with simple corrections made to possible orbits of the progenitor, using a Bayesian technique known as Parallel Tempering to efficiently explore the parameter space. We show that it is possible to constrain the shape of the host hal…
We present surface photometry of a giant, low surface brightness stellar arc in the halo of the nearby spiral galaxy M63 (NGC 5055) that is consistent with being a part of a stellar stream resulting from the disruption of a dwarf satellite galaxy. Using the stream's "great-circle" morphology and its photometric properties, we estimate that the stream originates from the accretion of a 10^8 M_sun satellite in the last few Gyr. The B-R color of the stream's stars is consistent with Local Group dwarfs and is also similar to the outer regions of M63's disk and stellar halo within our measurement u…
We examine the relation between stellar mass, velocity dispersion, size, Sérsic index and $D_n4000$ for ~40,000 quiescent galaxies in the SDSS. At a fixed stellar mass, galaxies with higher $D_n4000$ have larger velocity dispersions and smaller sizes. $D_n4000$ is a proxy for stellar population age, thus these trends suggest that older galaxies typically have larger velocity dispersions and smaller sizes. We combine velocity dispersion and size into a dynamical mass estimator, $σ^2 R$. At a fixed stellar mass, $σ^2 R$ depends on $D_n4000$. The Sérsic index is also correlated with $D_n4000$. Th…
Based on a new version of the Hipparcos catalogue and an updated Geneva-Copenhagen survey of F and G dwarfs, we analyze the space velocity field of about 17000 single stars in the solar neighborhood. The main known clumps, streams, and branches (Pleiades, Hyades, Sirius, Coma Berenices, Hercules, Wolf 630-alpha Ceti, and Arcturus) have been identified using various approaches. The evolution of the space velocity field for F and G dwarfs has been traced as a function of the stellar age. We have managed to confirm the existence of the recently discovered KFR08 stream. We have found 19 Hipparcos …
Using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7, we reexamine the Eastern Banded Structure (EBS), a stellar debris stream first discovered in Data Release 5 and more recently detected in velocity space by Schlaufman et al. The visible portion of the stream is 18 degrees long, lying roughly in the Galactic Anticenter direction and extending from Hydra to Cancer. At an estimated distance of 9.7 kpc, the stream is approximately 170 pc across on the sky. The curvature of the stream implies a fairly eccentric box orbit that passes close to both the Galactic center and to the sun, making it dynami…
Narrow stellar streams in the Milky Way halo are uniquely sensitive to dark-matter subhalos, but many of these subhalos may be tidally disrupted. I calculate the interaction between stellar and dark-matter streams using analytical and $N$-body calculations, showing that disrupting objects can be detected as low-concentration subhalos. Through this effect, we can constrain the lumpiness of the halo as well as the orbit and present position of individual dark-matter streams. This will have profound implications for the formation of halos and for direct and indirect-detection dark-matter searches…
Stellar halo substructures were identified using statistical photometric parallax of blue main sequence turnoff stars from fourteen Sloan Digital Sky Survey stripes in the north Galactic cap. Four structures are consistent with previous measurements of the Sagittarius dwarf tidal stream: the leading tail, the "bifurcated" stream, the trailing tail, and Stream C. The stellar overdensity in Virgo, about 15 kpc from the Sun, could arise from the crossing of the Parallel Stream and a new, candidate stream dubbed the Perpendicular Stream. The data suggests the presence of a wide stream near NGC 546…
We use the SDSS/SEGUE spectroscopic sample of stars in the leading and trailing streams of the Sagittarius (Sgr) to demonstrate the existence of two sub-populations with distinct chemistry and kinematics. The metallicity distribution function (MDF) of the trailing stream is decomposed into two Gaussians describing a metal-rich sub-population with means and dispersions (-0.74, 0.18) dex and a metal-poor with (-1.33, 0.27) dex. The metal-rich sub-population has a velocity dispersion ~ 8 km/s, whilst the metal-poor is nearly twice as hot ~13 km/s. For the leading stream, the MDF is again well-des…

Stellar streams are the inevitable end product of star cluster evolution, with the properties of a given stream being related to its progenitor. We consider how the dynamical history of a progenitor cluster, as traced by the evolution of its stellar mass function, is reflected in the resultant stream. We generate model streams by evolving star clusters with a range of initial half-mass relaxation times and dissolution times via direct N-body simulations. Stellar streams that dissolve quickly show no variation in the stellar mass function along the stream. Variation is, however, observed along …
We present a multi-epoch Hubble Space Telescope (HST) study of stellar proper motions (PMs) for four fields along the Orphan Stream. We determine absolute PMs of several individual stars per target field using established techniques that utilize distant background galaxies to define a stationary reference frame. Five Orphan Stream stars are identified in one of the four fields based on combined color-magnitude and PM information. The average PM is consistent with the existing model of the Orphan stream by Newberg et al. In addition to the Orphan stream stars, we detect stars that likely belong…
We examine the relation between stellar mass and central stellar velocity dispersion-the M-sigma relation-for massive quiescent galaxies at z<0.7. We measure the local relation from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the intermediate redshift relation from the Smithsonian Hectospec Lensing Survey. Both samples are highly complete (>85%) and we consistently measure the stellar mass and velocity dispersion for the two samples. The M-sigma relation and its scatter are independent of redshift with sigma ~ M^0.3 for M>10^10.3 M_solar. The measured slope of the M-sigma relation is the same as the scal…
We have designed a powerful new algorithm to detect stellar streams in an automated and systematic way. The algorithm, which we call the STREAMFINDER, is well suited for finding dynamically cold and thin stream structures that may lie along any simple or complex orbits in Galactic stellar surveys containing any combination of positional and kinematic information. In the present contribution we introduce the algorithm, lay out the ideas behind it, explain the methodology adopted to detect streams and detail its workings by running it on a suite of simulations of mock Galactic survey data of sim…
We investigate the effects of stellar evolution and dust on measurements of stellar velocity dispersion in mergers of disk galaxies. $N$-body simulations and radiative transfer analysis software are used to obtain mass-weighted and flux-weighted measurements of stellar velocity dispersion. We find that the distribution of dust with respect to the distribution of young stars in such systems is more important than the total degree of attenuation. The presence of dust typically causes flux-weighted measurements of stellar velocity dispersion to be elevated with respect to mass-weighted measuremen…
We present the results of fitting a flexible stellar stream density model to a collection of thirteen streams around the Milky Way, using photometric data from DES, DECaLS, and Pan-STARRS. We construct density maps for each stream and characterise their tracks on the sky, width, and distance modulus curves along the length of each stream. We use these measurements to compute lengths and total luminosities of streams and identify substructures. Several streams show prominent substructures, such as stream broadening, gaps, large deviations of stream tracks and sharp changes in stream densities. …
We analyze the Illustris-1 hydrodynamical cosmological simulation to explore the stellar velocity dispersion of quiescent galaxies as an observational probe of dark matter halo velocity dispersion and mass. Stellar velocity dispersion is proportional to dark matter halo velocity dispersion for both central and satellite galaxies. The dark matter halos of central galaxies are in virial equilibrium and thus the stellar velocity dispersion is also proportional to dark matter halo mass. This proportionality holds even when a line-of-sight aperture dispersion is calculated in analogy to observation…
We present high-resolution Magellan/MIKE spectroscopy of 42 red giant stars in seven stellar streams confirmed by the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S5): ATLAS, Aliqa Uma, Chenab, Elqui, Indus, Jhelum, and Phoenix. Abundances of 30 elements have been derived from over 10,000 individual line measurements or upper limits using photometric stellar parameters and a standard LTE analysis. This is currently the most extensive set of element abundances for stars in stellar streams. Three streams (ATLAS, Aliqa Uma, and Phoenix) are disrupted metal-poor globular clusters, although only w…
Inferring Globular Cluster Initial Mass Function from Stellar Streams
Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics, University of Toronto(加拿大理论天体物理研究所,多伦多大学);Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics, University of Toronto(天文学与天体物理学系,多伦多大学)
Observations of an ancient stellar stream provide the first evidence of a vanished population of extremely metal-poor stellar clusters. Their remnants might reveal how the early assembly of the Milky Way proceeded.
The longest recognized stellar stream in the Milky Way Galaxy has an expanse of over more than half the north sky. There was a physical disturbance within the stream, 500 million years ago, which could have been the scar of a dark matter collision. Due to its proximity to the galactic center, the GD-1 stellar stream can act as an antenna for gravitational perturbations. In 2018, a significant gap in GD-1 was discovered due to perturbation. A stream gap occurs when a massive object collides with the stellar stream. Based on the chasm location and width, we can guess when and where the impact oc…
Stellar streams have become central to studies of the interaction histories of nearby galaxies. To characterize the most prominent parts of the stellar stream around the well-known nearby (d = 17 Mpc) edge-on disk galaxy NGC 5907, we have obtained and analyzed new, deep gri Subaru/Suprime-Cam and 3.6 micron Spitzer/Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) observations. Combining the near-infrared 3.6 micron data with visible-light images allows us to use a long wavelength baseline to estimate the metallicity and age of the stellar population along a ~60 kpc long segment of the stream. We have fitted the s…

We report the serendipitous discovery of a stellar stream in the constellation Pegasus in the south Galactic hemisphere. The stellar stream was detected using the SDSS Data Release 14 by means of a matched filter in the color--magnitude diagram that is optimised for a stellar population that is 8 Gyr old with [Fe/H] = $-$0.46 dex, and located at heliocentric distance of 18 kpc. The candidate stream is faint (turnoff point at $r_0 \sim$ 19.6), sparse and barely visible in SDSS photometry. It is also detected in the (shallower) Pan-STARRs data. The residual stellar density in the $(u-g)_0$, $(g-…

We present evidence for a new Milky Way stellar tidal stream in the direction of the Andromeda and Triangulum (M31 and M33) galaxies. Using a matched-filter technique, we search the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 8 by creating stellar density maps which probe the Milky Way halo at distances between 8 and 40 kpc. A visual search of these maps recovers all of the major known stellar streams, as well as a new stream in the direction of M31/M33 which we name the Triangulum stream. The stream spans 0.2 deg by 12 deg on the sky, or 75 pc by 5.5 kpc in physical units with a best fitting distan…

Stellar streams are key players in many aspects of Milky Way studies and, in particular, studying their orbital dynamics is crucial for furthering our understanding of the Milky Way's gravitational potential. Although this is not a trivial task when faced with incomplete dynamical phase-space information, transverse motions of streams can nevertheless be comprehended by harnessing the information contained within their radial velocity gradients. Such methods are not only applicable to stellar streams, but also to HI streams residing in the Milky Way halo. Here, I present the results of two stu…
We report the discovery of a narrow stellar stream crossing the constellations of Sculptor and Fornax in the Southern celestial hemisphere. The portion of the stream detected in the Data Release 1 photometry of the ATLAS survey is at least 12 degrees long, while its width is $\approx$ 0.25 deg. The Color Magnitude Diagram of this halo sub-structure is consistent with a metal-poor [Fe/H] $\lesssim -1.4$ stellar population located at a heliocentric distance of 20 $\pm$ 2 kpc. There are three globular clusters that could tentatively be associated with the stream: NGC 7006, NGC 7078 (M15) and Pyxi…
We report the kinematic discovery of the Pisces Stellar Stream (PSS), at Galactic longitude of roughly l=135 degrees and longitude between -39 < b < -36 deg. We originally identified this halo substructure from velocities of red giant branch stars in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 8, and confirmed its presence in turnoff stars from SDSS photometric data. The PSS is a narrow, kinematically cold tidal stream, with a velocity dispersion of 8 km/s. Its metallicity is [Fe/H]=-2.2, with ~0.3 dex dispersion. The color-magnitude signature of the stream turnoff, combined with our measured…
We study the globular clusters (GCs) in the spiral galaxy NGC~5907 well-known for its spectacular stellar stream -- to better understand its origin. Using wide-field Subaru/Suprime-Cam $gri$ images and deep Keck/DEIMOS multi-object spectroscopy, we identify and obtain the kinematics of several GCs superimposed on the stellar stream and the galaxy disk. We estimate the total number of globular clusters in NGC 5907 to be $154\pm44$, with a specific frequency of $0.73\pm0.21$. Our analysis also reveals a significant, new population of young star cluster candidates found mostly along the outskirts…
Recent observations have revealed a trove of unexpected morphological features in many of the Milky Way's stellar streams. Explanations for such features include time-dependent deformations of the Galactic gravitational potential, local disruptions induced by dark matter substructure, and special configurations of the streams' progenitors. In this paper, we study how these morphologies can also arise in certain static, non-spherical gravitational potentials that host a subset of resonantly-trapped orbit families. The transitions, or separatrices, between these orbit families mark abrupt discon…
We present the discovery of a large population of stellar streams that surround the inner Galaxy, found in the Gaia DR2 catalog using the new STREAMFINDER algorithm. Here we focus on the properties of eight new high-significance structures found at Heliocentric distances between 1 and 10 kpc and at Galactic latitudes $|b|>20°$, named Slidr, Sylgr, Ylgr, Fimbulthul, Svöl, Fjörm, Gjöll and Leiptr. Spectroscopic measurements of seven of the streams confirm the detections, which are based on Gaia astrometry and photometry alone, and show that these streams are predominantly metal-poor. The sample …
Stellar streams record the accretion history of their host galaxy. We present a set of simulated streams from disrupted dwarf galaxies in 13 cosmological simulations of Milky Way (MW)-mass galaxies from the FIRE-2 suite at $z=0$, including 7 isolated Milky Way-mass systems and 6 hosts resembling the MW-M31 pair (full dataset at: https://flathub.flatironinstitute.org/sapfire). In total, we identify 106 simulated stellar streams, with no significant differences in the number of streams and masses of their progenitors between the isolated and paired environments. We resolve simulated streams with…
We report the discovery of a 70-degree long stellar stream in the Milky Way halo, which criss-crosses the well known "GD-1" stream. We show that this new stellar structure ("Kshir") and GD-1 lie at similar distance, and are remarkably correlated in kinematics. We propose several explanations for the nature of this new structure and its possible association with GD-1. However, a scenario in which these two streams were accreted onto the Milky Way within the same dark matter sub-halo seems to provide a natural explanation for their phase-space entanglement, and other complexities of this coupled…
In the coming decade, thousands of stellar streams will be observed in the halos of external galaxies. What fundamental discoveries will we make about dark matter from these streams? As a first attempt to look at these questions, we model Magellan/Megacam imaging of the Centaurus A's (Cen A) disrupting dwarf companion Dwarf 3 (Dw3) and its associated stellar stream, to find out what can be learned about the Cen A dark-matter halo. We develop a novel external galaxy stream-fitting technique and generate model stellar streams that reproduce the stream morphology visible in the imaging. We find t…

We present the first results of the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey of the interacting galaxy system, NGC4631 and NGC4656. From the maps of resolved stellar populations, we identify 11 dwarf galaxies (including already-known dwarfs) in the outer region of NGC4631 and the two tidal stellar streams around NGC4631, named Stream SE and Stream NW, respectively. This paper describes the fundamental properties of these tidal streams. Based on the tip of red giant branch method and the Bayesian statistics, we find that StreamSE (7.10 Mpc in Expected a posteriori, EAP, with the 90% credible inter…
Nearly a hundred stellar streams have been found to date around the Milky Way and the number keeps growing at an ever faster pace. Here we present the galstreams library, a compendium of angular position, distance, proper motion and radial velocity track data for nearly a hundred (95) Galactic stellar streams. The information published in the literature has been collated and homogenised in a consistent format and used to provide a set of features uniformly computed throughout the library: e.g. stream length, end points, mean pole, stream's coordinate frame, polygon footprint, and pole and angu…
The origins of most stellar streams in the Milky Way are unknown. With improved proper motions provided by Gaia EDR3, we show that the orbits of 23 Galactic stellar streams are highly clustered in orbital phase space. Based on their energies and angular momenta, most streams in our sample can plausibly be associated with a specific (disrupted) dwarf galaxy host that brought them into the Milky Way. For eight streams we also identify likely globular cluster progenitors (four of these associations are reported here for the first time). Some of these stream progenitors are surprisingly far apart,…
