Domain walls in correlated charge density wave compounds such as 1T-TaS2 can have distinct localized states which govern physical properties and functionalities of emerging quantum phases. However, detailed atomic and electronic structures of domain walls have largely been elusive. We identify using scanning tunneling microscope and density functional theory calculations the atomic and electronic structures for a plethora of discommensuration domain walls in 1T-TaS2 quenched metastably with nanoscale domain wall networks. The domain walls exhibit various in-gap states within the Mott gap but metallic states appear in only particular types of domain walls. A systematic understanding of the domain-wall electronic property requests not only the electron counting but also including various intertwined interactions such as structural relaxation, electron correlation, and charge transfer. This work guides the domain wall engineering of the functionality in correlated van der Waals materials.
We present a comprehensive numerical study on the kinetics of phase transition that is characterized by two non-conserved scalar order parameters coupled by a special linear-quadratic interaction. This particular Ginzburg-Landau theory has been proposed to describe the coupled charge- and magnetic transition in nickelates and the collinear stripe phase in cuprates. The inhomogeneous state of such systems at low temperatures consists of magnetic domains separated by quasi-metallic domain-walls where the charge-order is reduced. By performing large-scale cell dynamics simulations, we find a two-…
Rewritable nanoelectronics offers new perspectives and potential to both fundamental research and technological applications. Such interest has driven the research focus into conducting domain walls: pseudo 2D conducting channels that can be created, positioned, and deleted in situ. However, the study of conductive domain walls is largely limited to wide-gap ferroelectrics, where the conductivity typically arises from changes in charge carrier density, due to screening charge accumulation at polar discontinuities. This work shows that, in narrow-gap correlated insulators with strong charge lat…
In this paper, we report the applicability of the density matrix renormalization group(DMRG) approach to the cylindrical single wall carbon nanotube (SWCN) for purpose of its correlation effect. By applying the DMRG approach to the $t$+$U$+$V$ model, with $t$ and $V$ being the hopping and Coulomb energies between the nearest neighboring sites, respectively, and $U$ the onsite Coulomb energy, we calculate the phase diagram for the SWCN with chiral numbers ($n_{1}=3, n_{2}=2$), which reflects the competition between the correlation energy $U$ and $V$. Within reasonable parameter ranges, we inves…
Magnetotransport measurements on small single crystals of Cr, the elemental antiferromagnet, reveal the hysteretic thermodynamics of the domain structure. The temperature dependence of the transport coefficients is directly correlated with the real-space evolution of the domain configuration as recorded by x-ray microprobe imaging, revealing the effect of antiferromagnetic domain walls on electron transport. A single antiferromagnetic domain wall interface resistance is deduced to be of order $5\times10^{-5}\mathrm{μΩ\cdot cm^{2}}$ at a temperature of 100 K.
Mechanically bent nickel nanowires show clear features in their room temperature magnetoresistance when a domain wall is pinned at the location of the bend. By varying the direction of an applied magnetic field, the wire can be prepared either in a single-domain state or a two-domain state. The presence or absence of the domain wall acts to shift the switching fields of the nanowire. In addition, a comparison of the magnetoresistance of the nanowire with and without a domain wall shows a shift in the resistance correlated with the presence of a wall. The resistance is decreased by 20-30 milli-…
We demonstrate that in a densely packed aligned array of single walled carbon nanotubes, the breakdown of one nanotube leads to a highly correlated breakdown of neighboring nanotubes, thereby producing a nano-fissure. We show that the origin of the correlation is the electrostatic field of the broken nanotubes that produces locally inhomogeneous current and Joule heating distributions in the neighboring intact nanotubes triggering their breakdowns in the vicinity of the broken nanotubes. Our results suggest that the densely aligned array behaves like a correlated solid.
Using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory we describe 180-degree domain wall structure, intrinsic energy and carrier accumulation in rhombohedral phase of BaTiO3 as a function of the wall orientation and flexoelectric coupling strength. Two types of domain wall structures (phases of the wall) exist depending on the wall orientation. The low-energy 'achiral' phase occurs in the vicinity of the {110} wall orientation and has odd polarization profile invariant with respect to inversion about the wall center. The second 'chiral' phase occurs around {211} wall orientations and corresponds to mixed pa…
Domain wall dynamics in ferroic materials underpins functionality of data storage and information technology devices. Using localized electric field of a scanning probe microscopy tip, we experimentally demonstrate a surprisingly rich range of polarization reversal behaviors in the vicinity of the initially flat 180°ferroelectric domain wall. The nucleation bias is found to increase by an order of magnitude from a 2D nucleus at the wall to 3D nucleus in the bulk. The wall is thus significantly ferroelectrically softer than the bulk. The wall profoundly affects switching on length scales of the…
We have characterized the strength of the interfacial Dyzaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in ultrathin perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB/MgO films, grown on different underlayers of W, TaN, and Hf, using two experimental methods. First, we determined the effective DMI field from measurements of field-driven domain wall motion in the creep regime, where applied in-plane magnetic fields induce an anisotropy in the wall propagation that is correlated with the DMI strength. Second, Brillouin light spectroscopy was employed to quantify the frequency non-reciprocity of spin waves in the CoFeB lay…
The structural, electronic and transport properties of metallocene molecules (MCp$_2$) and isolated or nanotube-encapsulated chains are studied by using a combination of density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green's functions. The analysis first discusses the whole series of isolated MCp$_2$ molecules, where M = V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, and Os. The series presents a rich range of electronic and magnetic behaviors due to the interplay between the crystal field interaction and Hund's rules, as the occupation of the $d$ shell increases. The article then shows how many of these interesti…
Domain walls (DWs) are singularities in an ordered medium that often host exotic phenomena such as charge ordering, insulator-metal transition, or superconductivity. The ability to locally write and erase DWs is highly desirable, as it allows one to design material functionality by patterning DWs in specific configurations. We demonstrate such capability at room temperature in a charge density wave (CDW), a macroscopic condensate of electrons and phonons, in ultrathin 1T-TaS$_2$. A single femtosecond light pulse is shown to locally inject or remove mirror DWs in the CDW condensate, with probab…

We use conducting-tip atomic force microscopy (AFM) to measure local electronic properties of single wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) circuits on insulating substrates. When a voltage is applied to the tip and AFM feedback is used to position the tip, images formed from the tip-sample tunnel current have single tube resolution (near 1 nm diameter), more than an order of magnitude better than simultaneously acquired topographic AFM images. By finding points where the tip-sample current is zero, it is possible to measure the electrochemical potential within the circuit, again with nanometer resolutio…
We report measurements in a 2-dimensional, gravity-driven, collisional, granular flow of the normal force delivered to the wall and of particle velocity at several points in the flow. The wall force and the flow velocity are negatively correlated. This correlation falls off only slowly with distance transverse to the flow, but dies away on the scale of a few particle diameters upstream or downstream. The data support a picture of short-lived chains of frequently colliding particles that extend transverse to the flow direction, making transient load-bearing bridges that cause bulk fluctuations …
Quantum states of strongly correlated electrons are of prime importance to understand exotic properties of condensed matter systems and the controllability over those states promises unique electronic devices such as a Mott memory. As a recent example, a ultrafast switching device was demonstrated using the transition between the correlated Mott insulating state and a hidden-order metallic state of a layered transition metal dichalcogenides 1T-TaS2. However, the origin of the hidden metallic state was not clear and only the macroscopic switching by laser pulse and carrier injection was reporte…
Based on a quantum dissipation theory of open systems, we present a theoretical study of slow dynamics of magnetization for the ordered state of the new molecule-based magnetic complex [Mn(hfac)_{2}BNO_{H}] composed from antiferromagnetically coupled ferrimagnetic (5/2,1) spin chains. Experimental investigations of the magnetization process in pulsed fields have shown that this compound exhibits a metamagnetic AF-FI transition at a critical field in the order of the interchain coupling. A strong frequency dependence for the ac-susceptibility has been revealed in the vicinity of the AF-FI trans…
A method for deterministic control of the magnetic order parameter using an electrical stimulus is highly desired for the new generation of spintronic and magnetoelectronic devices. Much effort has been focused on magnetic domain-wall motion manipulated by a successive injection of spin-polarized current into a magnetic nanostructure. However, an integrant high-threshold current density of 107~108 A/cm2 inhibits the integration of those nanostructures with low-energy-cost technology. In addition, a precise determination of the location of domain walls at nanoscale seems difficult in artificial…
Ta/CoFeB/MgO trilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are often characterised by vanishing or modest values of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), which results in purely Bloch or mixed Bloch-Néel domain walls (DWs). Here we investigate the creep evolution of the overall magnetic bubble morphology in these systems under the combined presence of in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields and we show that He$^+$ ion irradiation induces a transition of the internal DW structure towards a fully Néel spin texture. This transition can be correlated to a simultaneous increase …
Materials with coupled or competing order parameters display highly tunable ground states, where subtle perturbations reveal distinct electronic and magnetic phases. These phases generally are underpinned by complex crystal structures, but the role of structural complexity in these phases often is unclear. We use group theoretic methods and first-principles calculations to analyze a set of coupled structural distortions that underlie the polar charge- and orbitally- ordered antiferromagnetic ground state of $A$-site ordered SmBaMn$_2$O$_6$. We show that these distortions play a key role in est…
