Central cluster galaxies are the largest and most massive galaxies in the Universe. Although they host very old stellar populations, several studies found the existence of blue cores in some BCGs indicating ongoing star formation. We analyse VLT/X-Shooter stacked spectra of 6 nearby massive central galaxies with high central velocity dispersions ($σ$>300 km/s) at different galactocentric distances. We quantify the young stellar population out to 4 kpc by fitting near-UV and optical absorption line indices with predictions of composite stellar populations modelled by an old and a young stellar component. We also use IMF-sensitive indices since these galaxies have been found to host a bottom-heavy IMF in their central regions. We derive negative young stellar populations gradients, with mass fractions of stars younger than 1 Gyr decreasing with galactocentric distance, from 0.70% within 0.8 kpc to zero beyond 2 kpc. We also measure the mass fraction in young stars for individual galaxies in the highest S/N central regions. All the galaxies have young components of less than one percent. Our results clearly suggest that the star formation in massive central cluster galaxies takes place in their galaxy cores (<2 kpc), which, with deeper gravitational potential wells, are capable of retaining more gas. Among the possible sources for the gas required to form these young stars, our results are consistent with an in-situ origin via stellar evolution, which is sufficient to produce the observed young stellar populations.
Near-ultraviolet (NUV) spectroscopic studies have suggested that passively evolving massive, early-type galaxies host sub-one percent fractions of young stars in their innermost regions. We shed light on the origin of these stars by analysing NGC 1277, a widely studied nearby prototypical massive compact relic galaxy. These are rare galaxies that have survived without experiencing significant size evolution via accretion and mergers since their formation at high redshift. We obtain a spectrum in the UV range within the central 1 kpc region of NGC 1277. We compare a carefully selected set of op…
The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) is an object of ongoing study with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on AstroSat. UVIT FUV and NUV photometry is carried out here for a set of 239 clusters in the NE disk and bulge of M31 which overlap with the HST/PHAT survey. Padova stellar models were applied to derive ages, masses, metallicities and extinctions for 170 clusters. The ages show a narrow peak at $\sim$4 Myr and a broad peak around 100 Myr. log(Z/Z$_{\odot}$) values are mostly between $-0.3$ and $+0.3$. The 7 clusters in the bulge are low metallicity and high mass. Most clusters are in the spi…
Using recently acquired HST NIR observations (J, Pa$β$ and H bands) of the nearby galaxy NGC1313, we investigate the timescales required by a young star cluster to emerge from its natal cloud. We search for extincted star clusters, potentially embedded in their natal cloud as either: 1. compact sources in regions with high H$α$/Pa$β$ extinctions; 2. compact HII regions that appear as point-like sources in the Pa$β$ emission map. The NUV--optical--NIR photometry of the candidate clusters is used to derive their ages, masses and extinctions via a least$-χ^2$ SED broad and narrow--band fitting pr…
Stellar population studies of early-type galaxies (ETGs) based on their optical stellar continuum suggest that these are quiescent systems. However, emission lines and ultraviolet photometry reveal a diverse population. We use a new version of the STARLIGHT spectral synthesis code and state-of-the-art stellar population models to simultaneously fit SDSS spectra and GALEX photometry for a sample of 3453 galaxies at $z < 0.1$ with $NUV-r > 5$ that are classified as elliptical by Galaxy Zoo. We reproduce $FUV$ magnitudes for 80 per cent of UV upturn galaxies selected using criteria from the liter…

The Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) sources, Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) radio sources, and High Frequency Peakers (HFP) radio sources are thought to be young radio AGNs, at the early stage of AGN evolution. We investigated the optical properties of the largest sample of 126 young radio AGNs based on the spectra in SDSS DR12. We find the black hole masses $M_{\rm BH}$ range from $10^{7.32}$ to $10^{9.84}$ $\rm M_{sun}$, and the Eddington ratios $R_{\rm edd}$ vary from $10^{-4.93}$ to $10^{0.37}$, suggesting that young radio AGNs have various accretion activities and not all are accreting at h…
Some post-merger galaxies are known to undergo a starburst phase that quickly depletes the gas reservoir and turns it into a red-sequence galaxy, though the details are still unclear. Here we explore the pattern of recent star formation in the central region of the post-merger galaxy NGC7252 using high resolution UV images from the UVIT on ASTROSAT. The UVIT images with 1.2 and 1.4 arcsec resolution in the FUV and NUV are used to construct a FUV-NUV colour map of the central region. The FUV-NUV pixel colour map for this canonical post-merger galaxy reveals a blue circumnuclear ring of diameter…
Young Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) are where we can observe closely the supernova (SN) ejecta and its interaction with circumstellar/interstellar medium. Therefore, they provide an opportunity to explore the explosion and the final stage of the evolution of massive stars. Near-infrared (NIR) emission lines in SNRs mostly originate from shocked dense material. In shocked SN ejecta, forbidden lines from heavy ions are prominent, while in shocked circumstellar/interstellar medium, [Fe II] and H2 lines are prominent. [Fe II] lines are strong in both media, and therefore [Fe II] line images p…
As nearby neighbors to the Milky Way, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) provide a unique opportunity to study star formation in the context of their galactic ecosystems. Thousands of young stellar objects (YSOs) have been characterized with large-scale Spitzer and Herschel surveys. In this paper, we present new near-IR spectroscopy of five high-mass YSOs in the LMC and one in the SMC. We detect multiple hydrogen recombination lines, as well as He I 2.058 $μ$m, H$_2$, [Fe II], and [S III] in these highly excited sources. We estimate the internal extinction of each source and f…
We present Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) spectra of HI-rich tidal features located around the outskirts of two interacting galaxy pairs, NGC 3166/9 and NGC 4725/47. These follow-up observations are part of a multi-wavelength campaign to study the properties and frequency of tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs) in group environments. Based on the calculated gas-phase metallicity and redshift, in addition to the previously measured HI and stellar properties, we have confirmed the tidal origins of TDG candidate AGC 208457, which has emerged from the tidal debris of an interaction between the NGC…
We report near-infrared (2.5--5 micron) long-slit (~ 30 arcsec) spectroscopy of a young stellar object in the direction toward the Galactic center with the Infrared Camera on board the AKARI satellite. The present target is suggested to be AFGL 2006 based on its very red color and close location. The spectra show strong absorption features of H$_2$O and CO$_2$ ices, and emission of HI Br alpha recombination line and the 3.3 micron band, the latter of which originates from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) or materials containing PAHs. The spectra show a broad, complex absorption feature …
We use panoramic optical spectroscopy obtained with MUSE@VLT to investigate the nature of five candidate extremely isolated low-mass star forming regions (Blue Candidates, BCs hereafter) toward the Virgo cluster of galaxies. Four of the five (BC1, BC3, BC4, BC5) are found to host several HII regions and to have radial velocities fully compatible with being part of the Virgo cluster. All the confirmed candidates have mean metallicity significantly in excess of that expected from their stellar mass, indicating that they originated from gas stripped from larger galaxies. In summary, these four ca…
We present a study on the stellar age and metallicity distributions for 1105 galaxies using the STARLIGHT software on MaNGA integral field spectra. We derive age and metallicity gradients by fitting straight lines to the radial profiles, and explore their correlations with total stellar mass M*, NUV-r colour and environments, as identified by both the large scale structure (LSS) type and the local density. We find that the mean age and metallicity gradients are close to zero but slightly negative, which is consistent with the inside-out formation scenario. Within our sample, we find that both …
The determination of chemical composition is crucial for investigating the formation and evolution of star forming galaxies and provides a powerful tool to constrain the effects of galactic winds and accretion from the cosmic web. In this regard stellar absorption line studies provide an attractive alternative to the standard techniques using the strong emission lines of HII regions. We discuss a number of newly developed methods: - multi-object spectroscopy of individual blue and red supergiant stars, the brightest stars in the universe at visual and NIR wavelengths, - NIR spectroscopy of sup…
Gaia EDR3 offers greatly improved kinematics for nearby objects, including members of nearby young stellar moving groups (NYMGs). In this study, we aim to identify low-mass NYMG members (spectral types of M0 to mid-L) in Gaia EDR3. We calculated spatio-kinematic membership probabilities utilising a Bayesian membership probability calculation scheme developed in our previous study. We evaluated stellar youth primarily based on colour-magnitude diagram positions. Combining spatio-kinematic membership assessment and youth evaluation, we identified ~2900 low-mass NYMG candidate members including ~…
Extremely metal-poor star-forming galaxies (XMPs) represent one of our only laboratories for study of the low-metallicity stars we expect to encounter at early epochs. But as our understanding of the $z>6$ universe has improved, it has become clear that the majority of known XMPs within 100 Mpc host significantly less prominent massive star populations than their reionization-era counterparts, severely limiting their utility as testbeds for interpreting spectral features found at the highest redshifts. Here we present a new photometric selection technique designed to identify nearby XMPs domin…

We present $K$-band integral field spectroscopic observations towards 17 massive young stellar objects (YSOs) in the low metallicity Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and two YSO candidates in the compact H ii regions N81 and N88 A (also in the SMC). These sources, originally identified using $Spitzer$ photometry and/or spectroscopy, have been resolved into 29 $K$-band continuum sources. By comparing Br$γ$ emission luminosities with those presented for a Galactic sample of massive YSOs, we find tentative evidence for increased accretion rates in the SMC. Around half of our targets exhibit emission …
Sulfur has been observed to be severely depleted in dense clouds leading to uncertainty in the molecules that contain it and the chemistry behind their evolution. Here, we aim to shed light on the sulfur chemistry in young stellar objects (YSOs) by using high-resolution infrared spectroscopy of absorption by the $ν_3$ rovibrational band of SO$_2$ obtained with the Echelon-Cross-Echelle Spectrograph on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. Using local thermodynamic equilibrium models we derive physical parameters for the SO$_2$ gas in the massive YSO MonR2 IRS3. This yields a SO…

We report Keck-NIRSPEC observations of the Brackett $α$ 4.05 $μ$m recombination line across the two candidate embedded super star clusters (SSCs) in NGC 1569. These SSCs power a bright HII region and have been previously detected as radio and mid-infrared sources. Supplemented with high resolution VLA mapping of the radio continuum along with IRTF-TEXES spectroscopy of the [SIV] 10.5 $μ$m line, the Brackett $α$ spectra data provide new insight into the dynamical state of gas ionized by these forming massive clusters. NIR sources detected in 2 $μ$m images from the Slit-viewing Camera are matche…
The Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) is one of the payloads in Astrosat, the first Indian Space Observatory. The UVIT instrument has two 375 mm telescopes: one for the far-ultraviolet (FUV) channel (1300-1800 A), and the other for the near-ultraviolet (NUV) channel (2000-3000 A) and the visible (VIS) channel (3200-5500 A). We shall discuss the issues with standardization in the UV with reference to Astrosat Observations (Cycle A04). I shall discuss the problems faced in data-analysis and how these in turn lead to serious issues dealing with the color-magnitude diagarms, membership and age…
