Many scalar field theories with attractive self-interactions support exceptionally long-lived, spatially localized and time-periodic field configurations called oscillons. A detailed study of their longevity is important for understanding their applications in cosmology. In this paper, we study gravitational effects on the decay rate and lifetime of dense oscillons, where self-interactions are more or at least equally important compared with gravitational interactions. As examples, we consider the $α$-attractor T-model of inflation and the axion monodromy model, where the potentials become flatter than quadratic at large field values beyond some characteristic field distance $F$ from the minimum. For oscillons with field amplitudes of $\mathcal{O}(F)$ and for $F\ll 0.1 M_\mathrm{pl}$, we find that their evolution is almost identical to cases where gravity is ignored. For $F\sim 0.1 M_\mathrm{pl}$, however, including gravitational interactions reduces the lifetime slightly.
Oscillons are spatially localised strong fluctuations of a scalar field. They can e.g. form after inflation when the scalar field potential is shallower than quadratic away from the minimum. Although oscillons are not protected by topology, they can be remarkably stable and have a significant impact on the (p)reheating phase. In this work we investigate the properties of oscillons in hilltop-shaped potentials, in particular the typical energies, shapes and lifetimes. In the first part of the paper, we simulate oscillon creation and stabilization with (3+1)-dimensional classical lattice simulat…
We consider a classical toy model of a massive scalar field in 1+1 dimensions with a constant exponential expansion rate of space. The nonlinear theory under consideration supports approximate oscillon solutions, but they eventually decay due to their coupling to the expanding background. Although all the parameters of the theory and the oscillon energies are of order one in units of the scalar field mass $m$, the oscillon lifetime is exponentially large in these natural units. For typical values of the parameters, we see oscillon lifetimes scaling approximately as $τ\propto \exp(k E/m)/m$ whe…
Oscillons are localized states of scalar fields sustained by self interactions. They decay by emitting classical radiation, but their lifetimes are surprisingly large. We revisit the reasons behind their longevity, aiming at how the shape of the scalar potential $V(ϕ)$ determines the lifetime. The corpuscular picture, where the oscillon is identified with a bound state of a large number of field quanta, allows to understand lifetimes of order of $10^3$ cycles in generic potentials. At the non-perturbative level, two properties of the scalar potential can substantially boost the lifetime: the f…
We develop an analytical procedure to compute all relevant physical properties of scalar field oscillons in models with quartic polynomial potentials: energy, radius, frequency, core-amplitude, and lifetime. We compare our predictions to numerical simulations of models with symmetric and asymmetric double well potentials in three spatial dimensions, obtaining excellent agreement. We also explain why oscillons have not been seen to decay in two spatial dimensions.

We consider the stability of oscillons in 2+1 space-time dimensions, in the presence of quantum fluctuations. Taking the oscillon to be the inhomogeneous mean field of a self-interacting quantum scalar field, we compare its classical evolution to the evolution in the presence of quantum fluctuations. The evolution of these and their back reaction onto the mean field is implemented through the inhomogeneous Hartree approximation, in turn computed as a statistical ensemble of field realizations. We find that although the lifetime of the oscillon is dramatically reduced compared to the classical …
Oscillons are long-lived, spherically-symmetric, attractor scalar field configurations that emerge as certain field configurations evolve in time. It has been known for many years that there is a direct correlation between the initial configuration's shape and the resulting oscillon lifetime: a shape memory. In this paper we use an information entropic measure known as differential configurational entropy (DCE) to obtain estimates of oscillon lifetimes in scalar field theories with symmetric and asymmetric double-well potentials. The time-dependent DCE is built form the Fourier-transform of th…
Oscillons are long-lived, localized excitations of nonlinear scalar fields which may be copiously produced during preheating after inflation, leading to a possible oscillon-dominated phase in the early Universe. For example, this can happen after axion monodromy inflation, on which we run our simulations. We investigate the stochastic gravitational wave background associated with an oscillon-dominated phase. An isolated oscillon is spherically symmetric and does not radiate gravitational waves, and we show that the flux of gravitational radiation generated between oscillons is also small. Howe…
We investigate the longevity of oscillons numerically, paying particular attention to radially-symmetric oscillons that have been conjectured to have an infinitely-long lifetime. In two spatial dimensions, oscillons have not been seen to decay. In three spatial dimensions, specific initial Gaussian configurations seem to lead to oscillons with spikes in lifetime that have been conjectured to be infinite. We study such ``resonant'' oscillons in two and three spatial dimensions, applying two tests to study their longevity: parametric resonance and virialization. Without offering a formal proof, …
Oscillons are extremely long-lived, spatially-localized field configurations in real-valued scalar field theories that slowly lose energy via radiation of scalar waves. Before their eventual demise, oscillons can pass through (one or more) exceptionally stable field configurations where their decay rate is highly suppressed. We provide an improved calculation of the non-trivial behavior of the decay rates, and lifetimes of oscillons. In particular, our calculation correctly captures the existence (or absence) of the exceptionally long-lived states for large amplitude oscillons in a broad class…
We use an information-theoretic measure of shape complexity known as configurational entropy (CE) to investigate numerically the remarkably long lifetimes of spherically-symmetric ``resonant oscillons'' in three-dimensional and of azimuthally-symmetric oscillons in two-dimensional relativistic scalar field theories, which have been conjectured to be infinite. In 3d, we obtain a power law relating a stability measure derived from CE to the oscillons' lifetimes that, upon extrapolation to large times, offers support to this conjecture. In 2d, we obtain a three-way relation between the oscillons'…
Real scalar fields with attractive self-interaction may form self-bound states, called oscillons. These dense objects are ubiquitous in leading theories of dark matter and inflation; of particular interest are long-lived oscillons which survive past $14$ Gyr, offering dramatic astrophysical signatures into the present day. We introduce a new formalism for computing the properties of oscillons with improved accuracy, which we apply to study the internal structure of oscillons and to identify the physical mechanisms responsible for oscillon longevity. In particular, we show how imposing realisti…
We study the production of gravitational waves during oscillations of the inflaton around the minimum of a cuspy potential after inflation. We find that a cusp in the potential can trigger copious oscillon formation, which sources a characteristic energy spectrum of gravitational waves with double peaks. The discovery of such a double-peak spectrum could test the underlying inflationary physics.
We investigate the production of gravitational waves during preheating after inflation in the common case of field potentials that are asymmetric around the minimum. In particular, we study the impact of oscillons, comparatively long lived and spatially localized regions where a scalar field (e.g. the inflaton) oscillates with large amplitude. Contrary to a previous study, which considered a symmetric potential, we find that oscillons in asymmetric potentials associated with a phase transition can generate a pronounced peak in the spectrum of gravitational waves, that largely exceeds the linea…
A stable oscillon was found in the (classical) analysis of the SU(2) gauged Higgs model under a 2:1 ratio between the Higgs and W masses, both analytically and numerically. We extend these results by constructing oscillons for all values of the Higgs mass and examining their stability, finding them to be stable when the Higgs mass is almost equal to twice the W mass. We also investigate the dependence of the oscillon lifetime on the mass of the Higgs, seeing different behavior for different regions of the Higgs mass. Close to the 2:1 mass ratio the interaction of the two fields leads to either…
We systematically investigate the preheating behavior of single field inflation with an oscillon-supporting potential. We compute the properties of the emitted gravitational waves (GWs) and the number density and characteristics of the produced oscillons. By performing numerical simulations for a variety of potential types, we divide the analyzed potentials in two families, each of them containing potentials with varying large- or small-field dependence. We find that the shape and amplitude of the emitted GW spectrum have a universal feature, with the peak around the physical wavenumber $k/a \…
Axion monodromy is a generic phenomenon in string compactifications. We investigate the production of gravitational-wave background from axion monodromy inflation during preheating. By performing lattice simulations using pseudo-spectral methods, we find that significant single-peak stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds are generated during preheating for asymptotic linear $|ϕ|$ and $ϕ^{2/3}$ potentials in axion monodromy inflation and cuspy potentials. This may allow us to explore string compactifications through gravitational waves.
We study the scalar and tensor perturbations generated by the fragmentation of the inflaton condensate into oscillons or transients after inflation, using nonlinear classical lattice simulations. Without including the backreaction of metric perturbations, we find that the magnitude of scalar metric perturbations never exceeds a few $\times 10^{-3}$, whereas the maximal strength of the gravitational wave signal today is $\mathcal{O}(10^{-9})$ for standard post-inflationary expansion histories. We provide parameter scalings for the $α$-attractor models of inflation, which can be easily applied t…
Nonlinear field theories produce unstable but long-lived configurations known as oscillons. These structures have been studied with asymmetric and symmetric double-well potentials and extended to other forms of potentials. In the present work, we examine the consequences of considering higher-order field theories, where we have used a generalization of the symmetric double-well potential and a $ϕ^6$ potential. Consequently, we have found $3+1$ spherically symmetric oscillons with significantly large lifetimes without parameter fine-tuning.
Using numerical relativity simulations we study the dynamics of pseudo-topological objects called oscillons for a class of models inspired by axion-monodromy. Starting from free field solutions supported by gravitational attractions, we investigate the effect of adding self-interactions, and contrast this with the effect of adding self-interactions whilst removing gravitational support. We map out regions of the parameter space where the initial conditions rapidly collapse to black holes, and other regions where they remain pseudo-stable or disperse.
We present a comprehensive, nonperturbative analytical method to investigate the dynamics of time-dependent oscillating scalar field configurations. The method is applied to oscillons in a double well Klein-Gordon model in two and three spatial dimensions, yielding high accuracy results in the characterization of all aspects of the complex oscillon dynamics. In particular, we show how oscillons can be interpreted as long-lived perturbations about an attractor in field configuration space. By investigating their radiation rate as they approach the attractor, we obtain an accurate estimate of th…

Oscillons are massive, long-lived, localized excitations of a scalar field. We show that in a large class of well-motivated single-field models, inflation is followed by self-resonance, leading to copious oscillon generation and a lengthy period of oscillon domination. These models are characterized by an inflaton potential which has a quadratic minimum and is shallower than quadratic away from the minimum. This set includes both string monodromy models and a class of supergravity inspired scenarios, and is in good agreement with the current central values of the concordance cosmology paramete…
A generic feature of string compactifications is the presence of many scalar fields, called moduli. Moduli are usually displaced from their post-inflationary minimum during inflation. Their relaxation to the minimum could lead to the production of oscillons: localised, long-lived, non-linear excitations of the scalar fields. Here we discuss under which conditions oscillons can be produced in string cosmology and illustrate their production and potential phenomenology with two explicit examples: the case of an initially displaced volume modulus in the KKLT scenario and the case of a displaced b…
We investigate the nonlinear dynamics of hybrid inflation models, which are characterized by two real scalar fields interacting quadratically. We start by solving numerically the coupled Klein-Gordon equations in static Minkowski spacetime, searching for possible coherent structures. We find long-lived, localized configurations, which we identify as a new kind of oscillon. We demonstrate that these two-field oscillons allow for "excited" states with much longer lifetimes than those found in previous studies of single-field oscillons. We then solve the coupled field equations in an expanding Fr…
Through a detailed numerical investigation in three spatial dimensions, we demonstrate that long-lived time-dependent field configurations emerge dynamically during symmetry breaking in an expanding de Sitter spacetime. We investigate two situations: a single scalar field with a double-well potential and the bosonic sector of an SU(2) non-Abelian Higgs model. For the single scalar, we show that large-amplitude oscillon configurations emerge spontaneously and persist to contribute about 1.2% of the energy density of the universe. We also show that for a range of parameters, oscillon lifetimes a…
We study collisions between pairs of bubbles nucleated in an ambient false vacuum. For the first time, we include the effects of small initial (quantum) fluctuations around the instanton profiles describing the most likely initial bubble profile. Past studies of this problem neglect these fluctuations and work under the assumption that the collisions posess an exact SO(2,1) symmetry. We use three-dimensional lattice simulations to demonstrate that for double-well potentials, small initial perturbations to this symmetry can be amplified as the system evolves. Initially the amplification is well…
Coherent oscillation of axions or axion-like particles may give rise to long-lived clumps, called axion stars, because of the attractive gravitational force or its self-interaction. Such a kind of configuration has been extensively studied in the context of oscillons without the effect of gravity, and its stability can be understood by an approximate conservation of particle number in a non-relativistic effective field theory (EFT). We extend this analysis to the case with gravity to discuss the longevity of axion stars and clarify the EFT expansion scheme in terms of gradient energy and Newto…
Axions are some of the best motivated particles beyond the Standard Model. We show how the attractive self-interactions of dark matter (DM) axions over a broad range of masses, from $10^{-22}$ eV to $10^7$ GeV, can lead to nongravitational growth of density fluctuations and the formation of bound objects. This structure formation enhancement is driven by parametric resonance when the initial field misalignment is large, and it affects axion density perturbations on length scales of order the Hubble horizon when the axion field starts oscillating, deep inside the radiation-dominated era. This e…
In the presence of a gravitational field decay rates may significantly differ from flat space equivalent. By studying mutually interacting quantum fields the decay rates can be calculated on a given spacetime. This paper presents the calculation of the transition probability for the decay of a massive scalar particle in a stiff matter dominated universe. We find that due to the precence of a gravitational field a finite correction to the transition probability is added which depends inversely on the mass. Moreover the decay rate is smaller and lifetime of the particles is longer compared to fl…
We discuss the effect of gravitational interactions on the lifetime of the Higgs vacuum where generic quantum gravity corrections are taken into account. We show how small black holes can act as seeds for vacuum decay, spontaneously nucleating a new Higgs phase centered on the black hole with a lifetime measured in millions of Planck times rather than billions of years. The constraints on parameter space of corrections to the Higgs potential are outlined, and implications for collider black holes discussed.
The gravitational interactions of elementary particles are suppressed by the Planck scale M_P ~ 10^18 GeV and are typically expected to be far too weak to be probed by experiments. We show that, contrary to conventional wisdom, such interactions may be studied by particle physics experiments in the next few years. As an example, we consider conventional supergravity with a stable gravitino as the lightest supersymmetric particle. The next-lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP) decays to the gravitino through gravitational interactions after about a year. This lifetime can be measured by stopp…
