Chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT), as originally proposed by Weinberg, promises a theoretical connection between low-energy nuclear interactions and quantum chromodynamics (QCD). However, the important property of renormalization-group (RG) invariance is not fulfilled in current implementations and its consequences for predicting atomic nuclei beyond two- and three-nucleon systems has remained unknown. In this work we present a first and systematic study of recent RG-invariant formulations of $χ$EFT and their predictions for the binding energies and other observables of selected nuclear systems with mass-numbers up to $A =16$. Specifically, we have carried out ab initio no-core shell-model and coupled cluster calculations of the ground-state energy of $^3$H, $^{3,4}$He, $^{6}$Li, and $^{16}$O using several recent power-counting (PC) schemes at leading order (LO) and next-to-leading order (NLO), where the subleading interactions are treated in perturbation theory. Our calculations indicate that RG-invariant and realistic predictions can be obtained for nuclei with mass number $A \leq 4$. We find, however, that $^{16}$O is either unbound with respect to the four $α$-particle threshold, or deformed, or both. Similarly, we find that the $^{6}$Li ground-state resides above the $α$-deuteron separation threshold. These results are in stark contrast with experimental data and point to either necessary fine-tuning of all relevant counterterms, or that current state-of-the-art RG-invariant PC schemes at LO in $χ$EFT lack necessary diagrams -- such as three-nucleon forces -- to realistically describe nuclei with mass number $A>4$.
The present note summarizes the discourse on power counting issues of chiral nuclear forces, with an emphasis on renormalization-group invariance. Given its introductory nature, I will lean toward narrating a coherent point of view on the concepts, rather than covering comprehensively the development of chiral nuclear forces in different approaches.
We show how to renormalize chiral two pion exchange perturbatively if one pion exchange has already been fully iterated at leading order. This particular choice corresponds to the implementation of the counting proposal of Nogga, Timmermans and van Kolck at subleading orders. We illustrate why the perturbative treatment of the two pion exchange contributions is mandatory in order to avoid certain inconsistencies in Weinberg's counting. In addition, renormalizability implies modifications of the power counting which we explore for the particular case of the singlet channel.
Using the no-core shell model approach, we report on the first results for 7Li based on the next-to-next-to-leading order chiral nuclear interaction. Both, two-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions are taken into account. We show that the p-shell nuclei are sensitive to the subleading parts of the chiral interactions including three-nucleon forces. Though chiral interactions are soft, we do not observe overbinding for this p-shell nucleus and find a realistic description for the binding energy, excitation spectrum and radius.
It is demonstrated that using a suitable renormalization condition one obtains a consistent power counting in manifestly Lorentz-invariant baryon chiral perturbation theory including vector mesons as explicit degrees of freedom.
We consider a renormalization scheme for relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory which provides a simple and consistent power counting for renormalized diagrams. As an application we discuss the chiral expansion of the nucleon mass.
I discuss the progress we have made on modifying Weinberg's prescription for chiral nuclear forces, using renormalization group invariance as the guideline. Some of the published results are presented.
Power-counting arguments are used to organize the interactions contributing to the N N -> d pi, p n pi reactions near threshold. We estimate the contributions from the three formally leading mechanisms: the Weinberg-Tomozawa (WT) term, the impulse term, and the $Δ$-excitation mechanism. Sub-leading but potentially large mechanisms, including $S$-wave pion-rescattering, the Galilean correction to the WT term, and short-ranged contributions are also examined. The WT term is shown to be numerically the largest, and the other contributions are found to approximately cancel. Similarly to the reacti…
A brief review of Compton scattering off the deuteron in Chiral Effective Field Theory, including gauge invariance and the correct Thomson limit. We model-independently determine the iso-scalar, spin-independent dipole polarisabilities of the nucleon at zero energy from all Compton data below 100 MeV as α_{E1}^s=11.3+-0.7_{stat}\+-0.6_{Baldin}+-1_{theory}, β_{M1}^s=3.2-+0.7_{stat}+-0.6_{Baldin}+-1_{theory}, each in 10^{-4} fm^3. Proton and neutron polarisabilities are therefore identical within (predominantly statistical) errors.
Some one-loop diagrams with one and two external baryons/nucleons are revisited using covariant baryon propagators in chiral effective theory. We showed that it is enough to separate and subtract all the local terms that violate chiral power counting to recover chiral power counting, no need to introduce extra operations. The structures of leading chiral corrections and IR enhancement or threshold effects are 'stable' or persist as long as covariant propagators are employed for all particles.
We use power-counting arguments as an organizing principle to apply chiral perturbation theory, including an explicit $Δ$, to the $p p \rightarrow p p π^0$ reaction near threshold. There are two lowest-order leading mechanisms expected to contribute to the amplitude with similar magnitudes: an impulse term, and a $Δ$-excitation mechanism. We examine formally sub-leading but potentially large mechanisms, including pion-rescattering and short-ranged contributions. We show that the pion-rescattering contribution is enhanced by off-shell effects and has a sign opposite to that of a recent estimate…
We discuss a renormalization scheme for relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory which provides a simple and consistent power counting for renormalized diagrams. The method involves finite subtractions of dimensionally regularized diagrams beyond the standard $\bar{\rm MS}$ scheme of chiral perturbation theory to remove contributions violating the power counting. This is achieved by a suitable renormalization of the parameters of the most general effective Lagrangian. In addition to simplicity our method has the benefit that it can be easily applied to multiloop diagrams. As an applicati…
We present a common chiral power-counting scheme for vector, axial-vector, scalar, and pseudoscalar WIMP-nucleon interactions, and derive all one- and two-body currents up to third order in the chiral expansion. Matching our amplitudes to non-relativistic effective field theory, we find that chiral symmetry predicts a hierarchy amongst the non-relativistic operators. Moreover, we identify interaction channels where two-body currents that so far have not been accounted for become relevant.
In nuclear chiral perturbation theory (ChPT), an operator is defined in a space with a cutoff which may be varied within a certain range. The operator runs as a result of the variation of the cutoff [renormalization group (RG) running]. In order for ChPT to be useful, the operator should run in a way consistent with the counting rule; that is, the running of chiral counter terms have to be of natural size. We vary the cutoff using the Wilsonian renormalization group (WRG) equation, and examine this consistency. As an example, we study the s-wave pion production operator for NN\to d pi, derived…
Novel techniques are presented, which identify the chiral power-counting regime (PCR), and realize the existence of an intrinsic energy scale embedded in lattice QCD results that extend outside the PCR. The nucleon mass is considered as a benchmark for illustrating this new approach. Using finite-range regularization, an optimal regularization scale can be extracted from lattice simulation results by analyzing the renormalization of the low energy coefficients. The optimal scale allows a description of lattice simulation results that extend beyond the PCR by quantifying and thus handling any s…
We present our latest calculations of $K^-$-nuclear quasi-bound states using a self-consistent scheme for constructing $K^-$-nuclear potentials from various subthreshold chirally inspired $\bar{K}N$ scattering amplitudes. We consider in-medium versions of the scattering amplitudes taking into account Pauli blocking in the intermediate states. The resulting $K^-$ binding energies as well as the widths exhibit the same A dependence, however, the binding energies strongly depend on the model used.
Novel techniques are presented, which identify the power-counting regime (PCR) of chiral effective field theory, and allow the use of lattice quantum chromodynamics results that extend outside the PCR. By analyzing the renormalization of low-energy coefficients of the chiral expansion of the nucleon mass, the existence of an optimal regularization scale is realized. The techniques developed for the nucleon mass renormalization are then applied to a test case: performing a chiral extrapolation without prior phenomenological bias. The robustness of the procedure for obtaining an optimal regulari…
With the goal of developing predictive ab-initio capability for light and medium-mass nuclei, two-nucleon and three-nucleon forces from chiral effective field theory are optimized simultaneously to low-energy nucleon-nucleon scattering data, as well as binding energies and radii of few-nucleon systems and selected isotopes of carbon and oxygen. Coupled-cluster calculations based on this interaction, named NNLO$_{\rm sat}$, yield accurate binding energies and radii of nuclei up to $^{40}$Ca, and are consistent with the empirical saturation point of symmetric nuclear matter. In addition, the low…
The binding energies of baryonic systems with quantum number charm or beauty and neutron excess (or large isospin) are estimated within the bound state version of the chiral topological soliton model. The procedure of the skyrmion rescaling is applied which is of importance for large enough flavor excitation energies (for heavy flavors). Inclusion of the flavor excitation energies into the minimization of the total mass of the baryonic state naturally leads to its decrease, and this effect increases with increasing flavor mass. Our results concerning the binding energies turned out to be partl…
In the framework of RGM, the binding energy of one channel $ΔΔ_{(3,0)}$($d^*$) and $ΔΔ_{(0,3)}$ are studied in the chiral SU(3) quark cluster model. It is shown that the binding energies of the systems are a few tens of MeV. The behavior of the chiral field is also investigated by comparing the results with those in the SU(2) and the extended SU(2) chiral quark models. It is found that the symmetry property of the $ΔΔ$ system makes the contribution of the relative kinetic energy operator between two clusters attractive. This is very beneficial for forming the bound dibaryon. Meanwhile the chir…
A dynamical coupled-channel study of K* K*bar state with isospin 0 and omega phi state is performed within both the chiral SU(3) quark model and the extended chiral SU(3) quark model by solving a resonating group method (RGM) equation. The model parameters are taken from our previous work, which gave a satisfactory description of the energies of the octet and decuplet baryon ground states, the binding energy of the deuteron, the nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering phase shifts, and the hyperon-nucleon (YN) cross sections. The results show that the interactions of K* K*bar states are attractive, wh…
The N Omega-bar systems with spin S=1 and S=2 are dynamically investigated within the framework of the chiral SU(3) quark model and the extended chiral SU(3) quark model by solving the resonating group method (RGM) equation. The model parameters are taken from our previous work, which gave a good description of the energies of the baryon ground states, the binding energy of deuteron, and the experimental data of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) and nucleon-hyperon (NY) scattering processes. The results show that N Omega-bar states with spin S=1 and S=2 can be bound both in the chiral SU(3) and extende…
Since Weinberg's proposal two decades ago, chiral effective field theory in the NN sector has been developed and applied up to order $O((Q/M_{hi})^4)$. In principle it could provide a model-independent description of nuclear force from QCD. However, in spite of its huge success, some open issues such as the renormalization group invariance and power counting, still remain to be solved. In this talk we refine the chiral effective field theory approach to the NN system based on a renormalization group analysis. Our results show that a truly model-independent description of NN system can be obtai…
We develop a chiral symmetric relativistic mean field model with logarithmic sigma potential derived in the strong coupling limit of the lattice QCD. We find that both of the nuclear matter and finite nuclei are well described in the present model. The normal vacuum is found to have global stability at zero and finite baryon densities, and an equation of state with moderate stiffness (K ~ 280 MeV) is obtained. The binding energies and charge radii of Z closed even-even nuclei are well reproduced in a wide mass range from C to Pb isotopes, except for the underestimates of binding energies in se…
A simple but useful guide for understanding the structure of light nuclei is presented. It is based on counting the number of interacting pairs in different spin-isospin (S,T) states for a given spatial symmetry, and estimating the overall binding according to the sum of sigma_i.sigma_j tau_i.tau_j expectation values, as suggested by one-pion-exchange. Applied to s- and p-shell nuclei, this simple picture accounts for the relative stability of nuclei as A increases and as T changes across isobars, the saturation of nuclear binding in the p-shell, and the tendency to form d, t, or alpha subclus…
A successful effective field theory program requires besides the most general effective Lagrangian a perturbative expansion scheme for observables in terms of a consistent power counting method. We discuss a renormalization scheme for manifestly Lorentz-invariant baryon chiral perturbation theory generating a simple and consistent power counting for renormalized diagrams. The approach may be used in an iterative procedure to renormalize higher-order loop diagrams and also allows for implementing a consistent power counting when vector mesons are explicitly included.
Determination of the proper power-counting scheme is an important issue for the systematic application of Chiral Effective Field Theory in nuclear physics. We analyze the cutoff dependence of three-nucleon observables (the neutron-deuteron scattering lengths and the triton binding energy) at the leading and next-to-leading orders of a power counting that ensures order-by-order renormalization in the two-nucleon system. Our results imply that three-body forces are not needed for renormalization of the three-nucleon system up to next-to-leading order, as usually assumed in the literature. (Errat…
We report ab initio calculations for neutron drops in a 10 MeV external harmonic-oscillator trap using chiral nucleon-nucleon plus three-nucleon interactions. We present total binding energies, internal energies, radii and odd-even energy differences for neutron numbers N = 2 - 18 using the no-core shell model with and without importance truncation. Furthermore, we present total binding energies for N = 8, 16, 20, 28, 40, 50 obtained in a coupled-cluster approach. Comparisons with Green's Function Monte Carlo results, where available, using Argonne v8' with three-nucleon interactions reveal im…
We compute the binding energies, radii, and densities for selected medium-mass nuclei within coupled-cluster theory and employ the "bare" chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction at order N3LO. We find rather well-converged results in model spaces consisting of 15 oscillator shells, and the doubly magic nuclei 40Ca, 48Ca, and the exotic 48Ni are underbound by about 1 MeV per nucleon within the CCSD approximation. The binding-energy difference between the mirror nuclei 48Ca and 48Ni is close to theoretical mass table evaluations. Our computation of the one-body density matrices and the corresponding …
A new power-counting scheme for a chiral effective field theory that includes Delta degrees of freedom is briefly described and applied to the nucleon Compton scattering.
We discuss the subleading contact interactions, or counterterms, of the triplet channels of nucleon-nucleon scattering in the framework of chiral effective field theory, with S and P waves as the examples. The triplet channels are special in that they allow the singular attraction of one-pion exchange to modify Weinberg's original power counting (WPC) scheme. With renormalization group invariance as the constraint, our power counting for the triplet channels can be summarized as a modified version of naive dimensional analysis in which, when compared with WPC, all of the counterterms in a give…
The renormalization of the chiral np interaction in the 1S0 channel to N3LO in Weinberg counting for the long distance potential with one single momentum and energy independent counterterm is carried out. This renormalization scheme yields finite and unique results and is free of short distance off-shell ambiguities. We observe good convergence in the entire elastic range below pion production threshold and find that there are some small physical effects missing in the purely pionic chiral NN potential with or without inclusion of explicit Delta degrees of freedom. We also study the renormaliz…
We compute the self energies of the baryon octet and decuplet states at the one-loop level applying the manifestly covariant chiral Lagrangian. It is demonstrated that expressions consistent with the expectation of power counting rules arise if the self energies are decomposed according to the Passarino-Veltman scheme supplemented by a minimal subtraction. This defines a partial summation of the chiral expansion. A finite renormalization required to install chiral power counting rules leads to the presence of an infrared renormalization scale. Good convergence properties for the chiral loop ex…
We study the pp \to ppπ^0 reaction near threshold based on heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. We show that the two-pion-exchange diagrams give much larger contribution than the one-pion-exchange diagram which is of lower chiral order in Weinberg's counting scheme. We also discuss the relation of our results to the momentum counting scheme.
$S$-wave bound-states composed of a nucleon($N$) and a heavy meson ($D$, $D^*$, $\bar{B}$ or $\bar{B}^*$) are investigated in both the chiral SU(3) quark model and the extended chiral SU(3) quark model by solving the resonating group method equation. The results reveal that the $ND$ and $ND^*$ interactions in the corresponding relative $S$-wave states are attractive, arising mainly from one boson exchange processes between light quarks. It is shown that these attractions are strong enough to form six $ND$ and $ND^*$ $S$-wave bound states in the extended chiral SU(3) quark model with the bindin…
We review on a chiral power counting scheme for in-medium chiral perturbation theory with nucleons and pions as degrees of freedom \cite{ref}. It allows for a systematic expansion taking into account local as well as pion-mediated inter-nucleon interactions. Based on this power counting, one can identify classes of non-perturbative diagrams that require a resummation. We then calculate the nuclear matter energy density for the symmetric and purely neutron matter cases up-to-and-including next-to-leading order (NLO), in good agreement with sophisticated many-body calculations. Next, the neutron…
We investigate the existence of bound $Ξ$ \break states in systems with $A=4-7$ baryons using the Jacobi NCSM approach in combination with chiral NN and $Ξ$N interactions. We find three shallow bound states for the NNN$Ξ$ system (with $(J^π,T)=(1^+,0)$, $(0^+,1)$ and $(1^+,1)$) with quite similar binding energies. The $^5_Ξ\mathrm{H}(\frac{1}{2}^+,\frac{1}{2})$ and $^7_Ξ\mathrm{H}(\frac{1}{2}^+,\frac{3}{2})$ hypernuclei are also clearly bound with respect to the thresholds $^4\mathrm{He} + Ξ$ and $^6\mathrm{He} +Ξ$, respectively. The binding of all these $Ξ$ systems is predominantly due to the…
Chiral effective field theory can provide valuable insight into the chiral physics of hadrons when used in conjunction with non-perturbative schemes such as lattice QCD. In this discourse, the attention is focused on extrapolating the mass of the rho meson to the physical pion mass in quenched QCD (QQCD). With the absence of a known experimental value, this serves to demonstrate the ability of the extrapolation scheme to make predictions without prior bias. By using extended effective field theory developed previously, an extrapolation is performed using quenched lattice QCD data that extends …
The structures of N phi states with spin-parity J^{p}=3/2^- and J^p=1/2^- are dynamically studied in both the chiral SU(3) quark model and the extended chiral SU(3) quark model by solving a resonating group method (RGM) equation. The model parameters are taken from our previous work, which gave a satisfactory description of the energies of the baryon ground states, the binding energy of the deuteron, the nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering phase shifts, and the hyperon-nucleon (YN) cross sections. The channel coupling of N phi and Lambda K* is considered, and the effect of the tensor force which r…
We study the role of chiral nuclear forces on the propagation of neutrinos in hot neutron matter. In particular, we analyze the convergence of the dynamical structure factor and the neutrino mean free path with the order of the power counting of the chiral forces, as well as the role of the regulator cut-off of these forces in the determination of these quantities. Single-particle energies and chemical potentials needed to calculate the dynamical structure factor are obtained within the Brueckner--Hartree--Fock approximation extended to finite temperature. Our results show that the dynamical s…
We address the connection between the saturating behavior of infinite nuclear matter and the description of finite nuclei based on state-of-the-art chiral two- and three-nucleon forces. We observe that chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions (at N2LO and at N3LO) which have been found to predict realistic binding energies and radii for a wide range of finite nuclei (from p-shell nuclei up to nickel isotopes) are unable to saturate infinite nuclear matter. On the other hand, it has been shown that, when the fits of the cD and cE couplings of the chiral three-nucleon interactions include the …
Three-nucleon forces (3NFs), and in particular terms of the Fujita-Miyazawa type, strongly influence the structure of neutron-rich exotic isotopes. Ab-initio calculations have shown that chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions correctly reproduce binding energy systematics and neutron driplines of oxygen and nearby isotopes. Exploiting the novel self-consistent Gorkov-Green's function approach, we present the first investigation of Ar, K, Ca, Sc and Ti isotopic chains. Leading chiral 3N interactions are mandatory to reproduce the trend of binding energies throughout these chains and to obta…
Weinberg's dimensional power counting for nuclei is reprised in this primer. The role of QCD and chiral symmetry in constructing effective Lagrangians is discussed. The two-scale hypothesis of Manohar and Georgi is combined with power counting in amplitudes to shed light on the scales of nuclear kinetic and potential energies, the size of strong-interaction coupling constants, the size of meson-exchange currents, and the relative sizes of $N$-nucleon forces. Numerous examples are worked out and compared to conventional nuclear models.
We present predictions of the binding energy per nucleon and the neutron skin thickness in highly neutron-rich isotopes of Oxygen, Magnesium, and Aluminum. The calculations are carried out at and below the neutron drip line as predicted by our model. The nuclear properties are obtained via an energy functional whose input is the equation of state of isospin-asymmetric infinite matter. The latter is based on a microscopic derivation of the energy per particle in neutron matter applying chiral few-nucleon forces together with a phenomenological model for the equation of state of symmetric nuclea…
We review on a chiral power counting for in-medium chiral perturbation theory with nucleons and pions as explicit degrees of freedom coupled to external sources. It allows for a systematic expansion including both local and pion-mediated inter-nucleon interactions. One can identify from this power counting classes of non-perturbative diagrams that require resummation. A non-perturbative method based on Unitary Chiral Perturbation Theory was also developed for performing those resummations. This power counting and non-perturbative techniques were firstly applied to calculate the pion self-energ…
We study here the equation of state of symmetric nuclear matter at finite temperatures using a modified SU(2) Chiral Sigma model. The effect of temperature on effective mass, pressure, entropy and binding energy is discussed. The liquid-gas phase transition is investigated and the critical values of temperature, density and pressure are calculated.
In this talk the $Q$ counting scheme to implement effective field theory is discussed. It is pointed out that there are two small mass scales in the problem $m_π$ and $1/a$ with $1/a \ll m_π$. It is argued that while the expansion based on $1/a$ being small compared to the underlying short distance scales works well, the chiral expansion may not. The coefficients of the effective range expansion are sensitive to the chiral physics and are very poorly described in $Q$ counting at lowest nontrivial order. A ``shape function'' is introduced which again is sensitive to pionic physics and insensiti…
Recently we have developed a novel chiral power counting scheme for an effective field theory of nuclear matter with nucleons and pions as degrees of freedom [1]. It allows for a systematic expansion taking into account both local as well as pion-mediated multi-nucleon interactions. We apply this power counting in the present study to the evaluation of the pion self-energy and the energy density in nuclear and neutron matter at next-to-leading order. To implement this power counting in actual calculations we develop here a non-perturbative method based on Unitary Chiral Perturbation Theory for…
The impact of chiral symmetry on nuclear physics is discussed in the context of recent advances in the few-nucleon systems and of dimensional power counting. The tractability of few-nucleon calculations, illustrated by very recent solutions for $A = 2-6$, is shown to follow from power counting based on chiral Lagrangians. The latter predicts the suppression of $N$-body forces, as originally shown by Weinberg. Isospin violation in the nuclear force is similarly analyzed using the results of van Kolck, and this is shown to be consistent with results from the Nijmegen phase-shift analysis. Conven…
We show that from analysis of time-ordered diagrams for the two-nucleon $T$-matrix in chiral perturbation theory it follows that low energy nucleon dynamics is governed by the generalized dynamical equation, which was derived in [J.Phys.A., v.32, p.5657 (1999)], with a nonlocal-in-time interaction operator. An operator is presented that parametrizes the nucleon-nucleon interaction in the 1S0 channel at leading order of the Weinberg power counting.
Properties of finite nuclei are evaluated with two-nucleon (NN) and three-nucleon (NNN) interactions derived within chiral effective field theory (EFT). The nuclear Hamiltonian is fixed by properties of the A=2 system, except for two low-energy constants (LECs) that parameterize the short range NNN interaction. We constrain those two LECs by a fit to the A=3 system binding energy and investigate sensitivity of 4He, 6Li, 10,11B and 12,13C properties to the variation of the constrained LECs. We identify a preferred choice that gives globally the best description. We demonstrate that the NNN inte…
Several conceptual points concerning the inclusion of the $Δ$(1232) resonance in the framework of chiral effective-field theory are discussed, with an emphasis on the problem of power counting in the baryon sector in general. I also formulate a new dispersion relation in the pion-mass squared (or, the quark mass) and make a link between the power counting and the analytic properties of chiral expansion. A controversy regarding the determination of the proton's magnetic polarizability from Compton-scattering data is stressed here as well.
We study a chiral relativistic theory of nuclear matter aimed at the desciption of both the binding and saturation properties and the QCD properties, quark condensate and QCD susceptibilities. For this purpose the nucleon scalar response of the quark-meson coupling model is introduced in the linear sigma model. The consequences for the nuclear and the QCD scalar susceptibilities are discussed.
We show that the Q-box expansion of nuclear many-body physics can be applied in nuclear effective field theory with explicit pions and external sources. We establish the corresponding power counting and give an algorithm for the construction of a hermitean and energy-independent potential for arbitrary scattering processes on nucleons and nuclei to a given order in the chiral expansion. Various examples are discussed in some detail.

The renormalization of the chiral nuclear interactions is studied. In leading order, the cutoff dependence is related to the singular tensor interaction of the one-pion exchange potential. In S waves and in higher partial waves where the tensor force is repulsive this cutoff dependence can be absorbed by counterterms expected at that order. In the other partial waves additional contact interactions are necessary. The implications of this finding for the effective-field-theory program in nuclear physics are discussed.
We discuss a renormalization scheme for relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory which provides a simple and consistent power counting for renormalized diagrams. The method involves finite subtractions of dimensionally regularized diagrams beyond the standard modified minimal subtraction scheme of chiral perturbation theory to remove contributions violating the power counting. This is achieved by a suitable renormalization of the parameters of the most general effective Lagrangian. As applications we discuss the mass of the nucleon, the $σ$ term, and the scalar and electromagnetic form f…
