We study a 2D system of identical mobile particles on the surface of a cylinder of finite length $d$ and circumference $W$, immersed in a medium of dielectric constant $\varepsilon$. The two end-circles of the cylinder are like-charged with the fixed uniform charge densities, the particles of opposite charge $-e$ ($e$ being the elementary charge) are coined as ``counterions''; the system as a whole is electroneutral. Such a geometry is well defined also for finite numbers of counterions $N$. Our task is to derive an effective interaction between the end-circles mediated by the counterions in thermal equilibrium at the inverse temperature $β$. The exact solution of the system at the free-fermion coupling $Γ\equiv βe^2/\varepsilon =2$ is used to test the convergence of the pressure as the (even) number of particles increases from $N=2$ to $\infty$. The pressure as a function of distance $d$ is always positive (effective repulsion between the like-charged circles), decaying monotonously; the numerical results for $N=8$ counterions are very close to those in the thermodynamic limit $N\to\infty$. For the couplings $Γ=2γ$ with $γ=1,2,\ldots$, there exists a mapping of the continuous two-dimensional (2D) Coulomb system with $N$ particles onto the one-dimensional (1D) lattice model of $N$ sites with interacting sets of anticommuting variables. This allows one to treat exactly the density profile, two-body density and the pressure for the couplings $Γ=4$ and $6$, up to $N=8$ particles. Our main finding is that the pressure becomes negative at large enough distances $d$ if and only if both like-charged walls carry a nonzero charge density. This indicates a like-attraction in the thermodynamic limit $N\to\infty$ as well, starting from a relatively weak coupling constant $Γ$ in between 2 and 4.
A simple model is presented for the appearance of attraction between two like charged polyions inside a polyelectrolyte solution. The polyions are modeled as rigid cylinders in a continuum dielectric solvent. The strong electrostatic interactions between the polyions and the counterions results in counterion condensation. If the two polyions are sufficiently close to each other their layers of condensed counterions can become correlated resulting in attraction between the macromolecules. To explore the counterion induced attraction we calculate the correlation functions for the condensed count…
The counterion-condensation transition at charged cylinders is studied using Monte-Carlo simulation methods. Employing logarithmically rescaled radial coordinates, large system sizes are tractable and the critical behavior is determined by a combined finite-size and finite-ion-number analysis. Critical counterion localization exponents are introduced and found to be in accord with mean-field theory both in 2 and 3 dimensions. In 3D the heat capacity shows a universal jump at the transition, while in 2D, it consists of discrete peaks where single counterions successively condense.
We present a simple model for the possible mechanism of appearance of attraction between like charged polyions inside a polyelectrolyte solution. The attraction is found to be short ranged, and exists only in presence of multivalent counterions. The attraction is produced by the correlations in the condensed layers of counterions surrounding each polyion, and appears only if the number of condensed counterions exceeds the threshold, $ n > Z/2 α$, where $α$ is the valence of counterions and $Z$ is the polyion charge.
We address the critical and universal aspects of counterion-condensation transition at a single charged cylinder in both two and three spatial dimensions using numerical and analytical methods. By introducing a novel Monte-Carlo sampling method in logarithmic radial scale, we are able to numerically simulate the critical limit of infinite system size (corresponding to infinite-dilution limit) within tractable equilibration times. The critical exponents are determined for the inverse moments of the counterionic density profile (which play the role of the order parameters and represent the inver…
We report a mechanism which can lead to long range attractions between like-charged spherical macroions, stemming from the existence of metastable ionized states. We show that the ground state of a single highly charged colloid plus a few excess counterions is overcharged. For the case of two highly charged macroions in their neutralizing divalent counterion solution we demonstrate that, in the regime of strong Coulomb coupling, the counterion clouds are very likely to be unevenly distributed, leading to one overcharged and one undercharged macroion. This long-living metastable configuration i…
We study the condensation transition of counterions on a charged cylinder via Monte Carlo simulations. Varying the cylinder radius systematically in relation to the system size, we find that all counterions are bound to the cylinder and the heat capacity shows a drop at a finite Manning parameter. A finite-size scaling analysis is carried out to confirm the criticality of the complete condensation transition, yielding the same critical exponents with the Manning transition. We show that the existence of the complete condensation is essential to explain how the condensation nature alters from c…
We examine the effective counterion-mediated electrostatic interaction between two like-charged dielectric cylinders immersed in a continuous dielectric medium containing neutralizing mobile counterions. We focus on the effects of image charges induced as a result of the dielectric mismatch between the cylindrical cores and the surrounding dielectric medium and investigate the counterion-mediated electrostatic interaction between the cylinders in both limits of weak and strong electrostatic couplings (corresponding, e.g., to systems with monovalent and multivalent counterions, respectively). T…
A simple field theory approach is developed to model the properties of charged, dielectric bodies and their associated counterions. This predictive theory is able to accurately describe the properties of systems (as compared to computer simulation data) from the weak coupling limit, where the Poisson-Boltzmann theory works well, through to the strong coupling limit. In particular, it is able to quantitatively describe the attraction between like-charged plates and the influence of image charge interactions.
The persistence length of a single, strongly charged, stiff polyelectrolyte chain is investigated theoretically. Path integral formulation is used to obtain the effective electrostatic interaction between the monomers. We find significant deviations from the classical Odijk, Skolnick and Fixman (OSF) result. An induced attraction between monomers is due to thermal fluctuations and correlations between bound counterions. The electrostatic persistence length is found to be smaller than the OSF value and indicates a possible mechanical instability (collapse) for highly charged polyelectrolytes wi…
From cement cohesion to DNA condensation, a proper statistical physics treatment of systems with long range forces is important for a number of applications in physics, chemistry, and biology. We compute here the effective force between fixed charged macromolecules, screened by oppositely charged mobile ions (counterions). We treat the problem in a one dimensional configuration, that allows for interesting discussion and derivation of exact results, remaining at a level of mathematical difficulty compatible with an undergraduate course. Emphasis is put on the counter-intuitive but fundamental …
We study the interactions between two negatively charged macroscopic surfaces confining positive counterions. A density-functional approach is introduced which, besides the usual mean-field interactions, takes into account the correlations in the positions of counterions. The excess free energy is derived in the framework of the Debye-H{ü}ckel theory of the one-component plasma, with the homogeneous density replaced by a weighted density. The minimization of the total free energy yields the density profile of the microions. The pressure is calculated and compared with the simulations and the r…
We study the interaction of two cylinders with helical charge distribution mediated by neutralizing counterions, by analyzing the separation as well as the azimuthal angle dependence of the interaction force in the weak and strong coupling limit. While the azimuthal dependence of the interaction in the weak coupling limit is overall small and mostly negligible, the strong coupling limit leads to qualitatively new features of the interaction, among others also to an orientationally dependent optimal configuration that is driven by angular dependence of the correlation attraction. We investigate…
Recent Monte Carlo simulations (A. G. Moreira and R. R. Netz: Eur. Phys. J. E {\bf 8} (2002) 33) in the strong Coulomb coupling regime suggest strange counterion electrostatics unlike the Poisson-Boltzmann picture: when counterion-counterion repulsive interactions are much larger than counterion--macroion attraction, the coarse-grained counterion distribution around a macroion is determined only by the latter, and the former is irrelevant. Here, we offer an explanation for the apparently paradoxical electrostatics by mathematically manipulating the strong coupling limit.
We reformulate the theory of strong electrostatic coupling in order to describe an asymmetric electrolyte solution of monovalent salt ions and polyvalent counterions using field-theoretical techniques and Monte-Carlo simulations. The theory is based on an asymmetric treatment of the different components of the electrolyte solution. The weak coupling Debye-Huckel approach is used in order to describe the monovalent salt ions while a strong coupling approach is used to tackle the polyvalent counterions. This combined weak-strong coupling approach effectively leads to dressed interactions between…
Screening of a macroion by multivalent counterions is considered. It is shown that ions form strongly correlated liquid at the macroion surface. Cohesive energy of this liquid leads to strong additional attraction of counterions to the surface. Away from the surface this attraction is taken into account by a new boundary condition for the Poisson-Boltzmann equation. This equation is solved with the new boundary condition for a charged flat surface and a long cylinder. For a cylinder Onsager-Manning theory looses its universality so that apparent charge of the cylinder is smaller than their the…
The effective elasticity of highly charged stiff polyelectrolytes is studied in the presence of counterions, with and without added salt. The rigid polymer conformations may become unstable due to an effective attraction induced by counterion density fluctuations. Instabilities at the longest, or intermediate length scales may signal collapse to globule, or necklace states, respectively. In the presence of added-salt, a generalized electrostatic persistence length is obtained, which has a nontrivial dependence on the Debye screening length.
Charged soft-matter systems--such as colloidal dispersions and charged polymers--are dominated by attractive forces between constituent like-charged particles when neutralizing counterions of high charge valency are introduced. Such counter-intuitive effects indicate strong electrostatic coupling between like-charged particles, which essentially results from electrostatic correlations among counterions residing near particle surfaces. In this paper, the attraction mechanism and the structure of counterionic correlations are discussed in the limit of strong coupling based on recent numerical an…
By a combination of Monte Carlo simulations and analytical calculations, we investigate the effective interactions between highly charged planar interfaces, neutralized by mobile counterions (salt-free system). While most previous analysis have focused on point-like counterions, we treat them as charged hard spheres. We thus work out the fate of like-charge attraction when steric effects are at work. The analytical approach partitions counterions in two sub-populations, one for each plate, and integrates out one sub-population to derive an effective Hamiltonian for the remaining one. The effec…
We study the spatial and orientational distribution of rodlike counterions (such as mobile nanorods) as well as the effective interaction mediated by them between two plane-parallel surfaces that carry fixed (quenched) heterogeneous charge distributions. The rodlike counterions are assumed to have an internal charge distribution, specified by a multivalent monopolar moment and a finite quadrupolar moment, and the quenched surface charge is assumed to be randomly distributed with equal mean and variance on the two surfaces. While equally charged surfaces are known to repel within the traditiona…
We report observations of stable bound pairs in very dilute deionized aqueous suspensions of highly charged polystyrene colloidal particles, with monovalent counterions, using a confocal laser scanning microscope. Through an analysis of several thousands of time series of confocal images recorded deep inside the bulk suspension, we find that the measured pair-potential, U(r) has a long-range attractive component with well depths larger than the thermal energy. These observations provide a direct and unequivocal evidence for the existence of long-range attraction in U(r) of like-charged colloid…
Based on a reconsideration of the Gibbs paradox, we show that a residual, non-extensive term in entropy turns up upon mixing identical particles, whether they are indistinguishable or not. The positive contribution from this residual entropy leads to a decrease in free energy, and we suggest that this entropic mechanism may serve as a source of like-charge attractions between a pair of colloidal particles or other macroions. For a system of two colloidal particles along with their neutralizing counterions, such decrease in free energy is of a few thermal energies and therefore crucial to the e…
Effective attraction between like-charged walls mediated by counterions is studied using local molecular field (LMF) theory. Monte Carlo simulations of the "mimic system'' given by LMF theory, with short-ranged "Coulomb core" interactions in an effective single particle potential incorporating a mean-field average of the long-ranged Coulomb interactions, provide a direct test of the theory, and are in excellent agreement with more complex simulations of the full Coulomb system by Moreira and Netz [Eur. Phys. J. E 8, 33 (2002)]. A simple, generally-applicable criterion to determine the consiste…
Like-charge attraction, driven by ionic correlations, challenges our understanding of electrostatics both in soft and hard matter. For two charged planar surfaces confining counterions and water, we prove that even at relatively low correlation strength, the relevant physics is the ground-state one, oblivious of fluctuations. Based on this, we derive a simple and accurate interaction pressure, that fulfills known exact requirements and can be used as an effective potential. We test this equation against implicit-solvent Monte Carlo simulations and against explicit-solvent simulations of cement…
Colloidal suspensions and polyelectrolyte solutions containing multivalent counterions can exhibit some very counter-intuitive behavior usually associated with the low temperature physics. There are two particularly striking phenomena resulting from strong electrostatic correlations. One is the like-charge attraction and the second is the polyion overcharging. In this contribution we will concentrate on the problem of overcharging. In particular we will explore the kinetic limitation to colloidal charge inversion in suspensions containing multivalent counterions.
Constant temperature molecular dynamics simulations were used to study solutions of flexible polyelectrolyte chains at nonzero concentrations with explicit counterions and unscreened coulombic interactions. Counterion condensation, measured via the self-diffusion coefficient of the counterions, is found to increase with polymer concentration, but contrary to the prediction of Manning theory, the renormalized charge fraction on the chains decreases with increasing Bjerrum length without showing any saturation. Scaling analysis of the radius of gyration shows that the chains are extended at low …
We study the effective interaction mediated by strongly coupled Coulomb fluids between dielectric surfaces carrying quenched, random monopolar charges with equal mean and variance, both when the Coulomb fluid consists only of mobile multivalent counterions and when it consists of an asymmetric ionic mixture containing multivalent and monovalent (salt) ions in equilibrium with an aqueous bulk reservoir. We analyze the consequences that follow from the interplay between surface charge disorder, dielectric and salt image effects, and the strong electrostatic coupling that results from multivalent…
A simple model is presented to calculate the potential of mean force between a polyion and a multivalent counterion inside a polyelectrolite solution. We find that under certain conditions the electrostatic interactions can lead to a strong attraction between the polyions and the multivalent counterions, favoring formation of overcharged polyion-counterion complexes. It is found that small concentrations of salt enhance the overcharging, while an excessive amount of salt hinders the charge reversal. The kinetic limitations to overcharging are also examined.
Despite decades of intensive studies, the effective interactions between strongly charged colloids still remain elusive. Here we show that a strongly charged surface with a layer of condensed counter- ions behaves effectively as a conductor, due to the mobile nature of the condensed ions. An external source charge in its vicinity is therefore attracted towards the surface, due to the image charge effect. This mechanism leads to correlational energies for counter-ions condensed on two distinct surfaces, as well as for free ions in the bulk. Generalizing Debye-Huckel theory and image charge meth…
The persistence length of a single, intrinsically rigid polyelectrolyte chain, above the Manning condensation threshold is investigated theoretically in presence of added salt. Using a loop expansion method, the partition function is consistently calculated, taking into account corrections to mean-field theory. Within a mean-field approximation, the well-known results of Odijk, Skolnick and Fixman are reproduced. Beyond mean-field, it is found that density correlations between counterions and thermal fluctuations reduce the stiffness of the chain, indicating an effective attraction between mon…
We study the interaction potential between two polyions inside a colloidal suspension. It is shown that at large separation the interaction potential is purely repulsive, with the induced attractive interactions being doubly screened. For short separations the condensed counterions become correlated, what leads to an effective attraction between the two macromolecules.
Strong short ranged positional correlations involving counterions can induce a net attractive force between negatively charged strands of DNA, and lead to the formation of ion pairs in dilute ionic solutions. But the long range of the Coulomb interactions impedes the development of a simple local picture. We address this general problem by mapping the properties of a nonuniform system with Coulomb interactions onto those of a simpler system with short ranged intermolecular interactions in an effective external field that accounts for the averaged effects of appropriately chosen long ranged and…
We study the distribution of multivalent counterions next to a dielectric slab, bearing a quenched, random distribution of charges on one of its solution interfaces, with a given mean and variance, both in the absence and in the presence of a bathing monovalent salt solution. We use the previously derived approach based on the dressed multivalent-ion theory that combines aspects of the strong and weak coupling of multivalent and monovalent ions in a single framework. The presence of quenched charge disorder on the charged surface of the dielectric slab is shown to substantially increase the de…
Electric double layers (EDL) with counterions only, say electrons with the elementary charge $-e$, in thermal equilibrium at the inverse temperature $β$ are considered. In particular, we study the effect of the surface charge modulation on the particle number density profile and the pressure. The mobile particles are constrained to the surface of a 2D cylinder and immersed in vacuum (no dielectric image charges). An EDL corresponds to the end-circle of the cylinder which carries a (fixed) position-dependent line charge density. The geometries of one single EDL and two EDLs at distance $d$ are …
